Fiera dug around in the hole some more- there was a massive crystal there just a few moments ago. Perhaps there were even more, smaller gems around the base? She had found a couple already, after all. Sure enough though, Fiera was able to bring up a veritable trove of treasures by digging around in the rubble. She giggled as she brushed the dirt off of them, placing them one after the other on the ground. Sure, the giant crystal had turned out to be a bust. There was no way she could break it apart, not with the tools she had now. But a bunch of smaller ones? She could take these ones home with her easily- and how pretty they all were! Fiera shoved them in her pocket for now- she could analyze them all properly later. For now, she figured that it was time to get back to her cart.

All sorts of things could have happened to her mine cart in the meantime, after all- it wasn't safe for her to leave it alone for too long. Considering how many of the denizens of the mines fed on gemstones, fossils, and other sorts of rocks, Fiera's cart would be a buffet to a lucky gem dragon- so long as the humanish left it undefended. Well, it wouldn't be left like that for long. Fiera shoved the giant crystal to the back of the room, no longer caring about it in the slightest now that she knew she couldn't take it with her. It might as well be useless. She gave it another kick, just for the sake of kicking. Then with a petulant groan, she got back on her hands and knees. She had a feeling that the way back would be just as miserable as the way in.

Aaaand, she was right. Somehow this tunnel was even smaller coming out than it was going in. Madison pressed herself to Fiera's back, making angry little hissing noises. "Quit whining, I'm enjoying this just as much as you." Fiera grumbled, getting down on her elbows to crawl. Somehow, the floor felt even more hard and rough than before, even through her sturdy clothing. Everything that came out of her mouth was muffled too, considering that she had to hold her flashlight in her mouth just to see. Needless to say, while she had found a lot worth keeping in that tiny chamber, she certainly wouldn't make the mistake of going there twice. This passage alone was enough to make her want to die. Finally however, she found the end of the tunnel, the crack opening back up into the underground canyon beyond, with its deep rushing river, thank the gods.

That only meant that Fiera had to figure out how to stand back up now. She was stuck on her hands and knees when crawling from the tunnel, but the ledge plunging into the river below was only a foot away- a little lack of balance meant a deadly fate. She didn't exactly have a hand hold to help her back up. It was a lot easier to fall into the crack than it was going to be crawling out. First of all, Fiera put her flashlight in one of her pockets. She could see now that she was back within the range of her mine cart's torchlight. Then she turned awkwardly, still on her hands and knees, to her left, trying to get her whole body out of the crack at least. When she was finally free, down to the last hair on her tail, she was finally able to figure out how to stand up.

She leaned as far into the wall as possible, using it to prop herself up. Then, she slowly stood, grinding her shoulder against the wall. Needless to say, Madison scuttled to the other shoulder. It was pretty uncomfortable, but sliding like this was the most stable way she could think of to get upright again. Once she was up though, she put her hands on her hips victoriously. "Whew! That wasn't so bad." She said. Then, she turned and went to walk across the gap in the middle of the canyon, ready to go back over to her mine cart- only to completely forget about the width of the gap, misjudge how far she needed to step, and tumble off of the ledge. The humanish screeched, flailing her limbs around, but only caught air. If only there was a stalactite to grab! Madison screeched as well, her lack of flight forcing her to go down too.

Thankfully, the gap wasn't that wide and Fiera crashed down half on the opposite side. Still, the lower half of her body dangled in the pit beneath her, and she scrabbled against the stone floor. Her tail fell into the water- it was icy cold! She felt her whole body freeze up as the cold sunk in, and felt just how truly fast the water was as it rushed by, trying to take her tail off with it. She whimpered and thrashed her legs, managing to reach the other side. She took that opportunity to launch herself out of the pit, pushing off with her hind legs. She managed to scramble onto the floor and lay there breathing for a moment, Madison trembling against her chin. The candy corn bat seemed to be trying to make herself as small as possible. "That... SUCKED." She said loudly, her voice echoing off of the canyon's interior.

Fiera tried her best to squeeze the river water out of her tail, but it just wasn't working. No matter how hard she tried, her tail just seemed to stay soaked. She was really cold now, with the chill breeze from the flowing water sinking into her tail bones. Madison didn't seem to be getting any better either, no matter how much Fiera pet her. She checked her mine cart too- it looked fine from a distance, but now that she came closer, she could see distinct scratches around the seams of it. Something had been trying to chew its way in while she was gone! She had been in that crack for ten minutes, tops! Fiera popped it open- at least all of her gems were still there. She added the ones she found to the hoard. She didn't know what she'd do if the had been successfully raided.

"Maybe... we should go home." Fiera groaned. This trip had gone great, that was for sure! But between all those boulders she had to break, squeezing through that tiny tunnel, and now getting soaked in an underground river... Fiera had just about had enough. For now at least. She could always get her rest and come back later. She stood up from her position, leaning against the mine cart. She gently set Madison on it, letting the candy corn bat get herself comfortable. "Ready?" She said, winking at her. "Let's go home, Madison." She said, and they were off- back up the canyon, back through the hole, back through the sandstone tunnels, and back into the main room of the mine. Somehow, it felt a lot faster going out than coming in. And soon, they'd be back in the sunlight- even though they had only been down there a couple hours, she knew that it would feel like it had been years since she had seen it.

The air in the mines was hot and humid, but for once Fiera couldn’t bring herself to mind. The days had been so cold and dry for months now, that the sweat inducing humidity of the mines ceased to bother her this month. She dragged her mining cart into the area, glancing around and getting her bearings. She had come with her yumenokei, Lunarain tow, along with a fresh new piece of mining equipment. Well, sort of a piece of mining equipment. It was a book that she had gotten for successfully digging up so many gems from the mines, the same way she got her torch (light staff? She wasn’t really sure what to call it) and mine cart. This left her better prepared than ever to mine, though she didn’t feel the urge to go over the top today. Maybe more of a gentle exploratory journey as opposed to exhausting herself excavating gems.

The book she had was specifically a guide to gems that she could find in The Labs’ mines, listing each of their names, their common appearances, variants they could come in, how common they were, and where they could most often be found. Fiera knew some of the information contained in the book by heart already due to natural observation and what she had learned at The Underground from selling her gems, but some of it came as a real surprise to her. In any case, it would come in handy for helping her identify whatever she dug up a lot faster- though she’d have to find something interesting first in order to use it. Still, she didn’t think she’d have too much of a problem with that- she had plenty of light to see by, and in a pinch Lunara could probably brighten the area as well with her magical abilities.

Lunara didn’t seem afraid of the mines at all- quite the opposite, in fact. Yumenokei were creatures of the moon, so darkness wasn’t really something they worried about. Enclosed spaces perhaps moreso, but with Fiera nearby she seemed to feel perfectly safe. Besides, yumenokei were a clever race. Even if the pair got separated, Fiera was sure that Lunara could make her way back up here safely, and either get home or go for help on her own. Fiera liked to hope that Lunara would try and help her… but, well, they weren’t on THAT good terms with each other yet. Hopefully this trip would change that. Despite having trained the yumenokei before and entering her in a beauty contest, Fiera didn’t feel like they were too acquainted yet. Friendly, yes, but not friends. Another contest was coming up though, and the humanish wanted to be sure that their bond would show in the performance.

Hence why she was so nonchalant about mining today. The purpose of this trip wasn’t really to find gems- though Fiera was hardly going to turn them down if she found any. Gems were great, why wouldn’t she want them. No, the trip was mostly so she could bond more with Lunara. Any prizes they found would be a victory for the pair of them, not just Fiera. To help facilitate that, Fiera didn’t bother leashing Lunara. She was smart enough to know that it wasn’t a good idea to wander off, not to mention her floaty nature made it a little difficult to pull her along anyway. A free roaming yumenokei, while an odd sight, was the best option for this trip. As expected, Lunara was following around placidly, quietly hopping behind Fiera while flicking her ears around to take in her surroundings as best she could via hearing.

The rocky environment was definitely new to Lunara- Fiera had never taken her mining before. Still, the yumenokei seemed more curious than scared, sniffing at the various rocks in the main thoroughfare. That was just fine by Fiera- they'd likely be spending a lot of time down here today. Still, she clicked her tongue to get the moon rabbit's attention and gestured further down the hall. Understand the request, Lunara hopped after her, drifting through the air like a leaf. After Fiera had taught her how to glide, she didn't really spend a lot of time on the ground anymore. Instead, a single leap could carry her nearly twenty feet alongside her owner, gently falling through the air like a torpedo through water, with her long ears and tendrils undulating behind her. If any pet was going to fit right in at that upcoming 'magic' contest, it would be Lunara.
