Fiera had slowly been working Lincoln up toward potential battle readiness. Tournaments were run pretty frequently in the Labs, and sooner or later Fiera wanted to give it a try- if just for the showmanship of it all. She was pretty sure pets couldn’t be permanently hurt doing it, with magical healers standing by after every match. As a result, it could be a very interesting experience for her and her pets.Battling wasn’t just about knowing fighting moves however. Any pet could bite or hit or scratch. Only a few pets were emotionally ready for it, and Lincoln wasn’t one of them. Pets like Lincoln were herbivorous and gentle in nature. It was pretty hard on them to deal with the violence of it all right off the bat, so Fiera would have to get him used to it. Which, unfortunately, meant that Fiera had to deal with a lot of grossness today.

Just because she wanted to get Lincoln used to this stuff didn’t mean she liked it herself. She had bought a lot of scraps and offal from a butcher’s shop- stuff that looked nasty and people wouldn’t eat, but was still meat. Apparently she wasn’t the only one who did this on a regular basis either. The stuff was straight up advertised to pet trainers when she walked in the doors of the shop. Though, maybe that was because there were also a lot of carnivorous lab creations in the city. Regardless of the reason for its advertisement, Fiera now had a cooler full of pure gore that Lincoln would no doubt hate. They had even sold it to her pre-heated, so it was nice and warm for him to… well, hate. With any luck though, he’d get used to it- and not freak out if it happened on the battlefield.

When Fiera dragged out the cooler (or was it a ‘heater’ in this case? ....A weird thermos?), Lincoln initially didn’t look up at all. That was a good start, she thought. Let’s hope it stayed that way. She called him over, sweetly and gently. Lincoln looked over at his owner, blinking lazily before yawning. He snuffled and stretched, letting each of his four limbs and his tail loosen up in turn before he trotted over. Poor boy. He had no idea what he was getting into. Then, she cringed and cracked the cooler. Lincoln tilted his head, sniffing loudly. She supposed it must smell a little like metals to him, if not the kind he adored. She still had his pouch of beloved pennies in her back pocket, after all. Soon though, he flattened his ears, gave a couple of warning honks, and backed away, recognizing the scent of the blood and guts.

“No no no, it’s ok Lincoln!” She called sweetly, opening the cooler the rest of the way. He honked even louder, crouching low to the ground and holding up his tail menacingly, waving it back and forth. She made a mental note to not approach him while he was this freaked out- that electricity crackling around him could probably do a decent amount of damage if she touched him now. Thankfully, his treats could be thrown. “Ok, stay there then! Stay, Lincoln!” She cooed, and Lincoln snuffled and hunkered down, looking at her suspiciously. “That’s it. Good boy, Lincoln!” She said, and threw him a coin. However, she didn’t throw it directly to him. Instead, she tossed it about a foot in front of him, in the direction of the cooler. If he wanted his treats, he’d have to slowly approach the (frankly awful) smelling cooler. He regarded her suspiciously.

If there was one thing Lincoln couldn’t resist however, it was treats. Those pennies were about the only reason Fiera could get Lincoln to do anything. He honked grumpily, but shuffled forward a few steps to claim the first penny. Fiera sighed with relief, a weight lifted from her. If he was willing to meet her there, she could slowly inch him forward. “That’s it, Lincoln! Good job, buddy! Now stay there!” She said. Lincoln grumbled, still looking at the cooler and its contents, but did as she said. After several seconds had passed, she released him. “Good stay, Lincoln! Here you go!” She said, and tossed him another penny, even closer this time. It would bring him about five feet from the cooler, and she was sure she could get him even closer after that. He grumbled loudly, shuffling around but not quite walking forward. Eventually however, his gluttony outweighed his fear.

When he chewed up that penny she got another one ready, and she knew that he definitely heard her doing so. His ears flicked up as an indicator. When he looked up this time, Fiera didn’t bother asking him to stay this time. She simply praised him and threw this penny even closer- practically dropping it in front of the cooler. He looked at her, and back at the penny. And back at her. And the penny. She raised her eyebrows, and made a gesture that simply said “do whatever you want, buddy”. He grumbled and crept closer, slower and slower as if the cooler was going to reach out and bite him. And who knew, the stuff in it could have done that once upon a time. Now though, it was only meat. It likely looked pretty scary from his perspective, but his owner knew it couldn’t hurt him.

Finally, he leaned down and slurped up the last penny, crunching loudly and happily despite the fact that he was now a mere foot from the cooler. “Good boy, Lincoln!” She said, and threw him a couple more treats from the satchel as a reward for overcoming his fear and making it this far. Unfortunately, from here she’d have to get him even closer than before. Her goal was to get him touching it even. Though hopefully not playing with it- that was not a mess she wanted to clean up at the end of the day. He happily ate the dime’s worth of pennies she threw him, while she herself put on elbow length gloves and a smock. She did NOT need this crap getting on her designer gym clothes. They were dry clean only! Then, she turned to face Lincoln again. “Ok buddy, let’s get this done.”

Lincoln snuffled fearfully at the sight of the gore now out of the cooler and in Fiera’s hand. She could sympathize- this stuff WAS going to get even closer to him, after all. But it needed to be done. She didn’t force him to touch it (not yet at least), but did hold it out to him. He tried to shuffle away, but Fiera offered him another penny in her palm. He snorted and came a bit closer, from the opposite direction of the meat, and she dropped it next to him. He honked and hopped away a bit, but Fiera tossed another penny in front of it. He continued to honk angrily, looking between her and the chunk she had so rudely dropped next to him. “Meat’s gonna come near you sometimes, buddy.” She said, drumming her fingers on the side of the cooler. “You’ve gotta get used to it moving sometimes.”

Eventually, he sighed and got up, and ate the coin even though it was only mere inches from the hunk of gore that had splattered next to him mere moments ago. Fiera could have clapped, though she didn’t want to push his limits- this was still great progress for him. Her goal, of course, was to get him to touch it of his own free will. She decided to work a bit further toward that. While he ate, she stepped around the cooler, and scooped up the meat again. He seemed to be perfectly fine with it… until she started moving it closer. He gave her a warning honk, but she only gently shushed him. “It’s ok… stay.” She said, and gently tapped it against his foot, leaving a bloody red spot on it. He honked loudly and she took the meat away as he immediately began sniffing his foot. When he realized he wasn’t injured however, Fiera threw him a couple more coins.

He seemed to finally be piecing together that this stuff wasn’t going to hurt him. In fact, once she fed him he simply ignored the dirty spot on his foot in favor of eating. Perhaps… it was time for the final test. She let him sit for a minute while she got ready, finding a bit hunk of… rib or something. Whatever it was, it was big and gross looking, with the smell of blood all over it. Then, she set it on the ground and poured out a small pile of coins into her hand. Lincoln immediately perked up, looking at them. She set them on the ground where he could see, and before he could rush over… she flopped the meat over on top of them. The lamadidron approached carefully… before going and flipping the meat back off with his foot so he could access the coins. Fiera smiled- he had gone from not wanting to go anywhere near the gore to touching it so he could get what he wanted. As far as she was concerned, that was a total success.

Fiera trekked into the verdant public park once more with a familiar, winged little creature in tow. It had been some time since she had trained her sarane, Algol, but she figured he needed the break to let that obedience training sink in. Since then, the pair of them had been to the mines together, going on an adventure that Fiera had hoped would strengthen their bonds. They had seen a lot of things and gone a lot of places and he had stolen a lot of her gems, but she was confident that it was good for their relationship. As far as she could tell, it had worked- he had been surprisingly good to her on this walk so far. He hadn’t disobeyed an order a single time yet this trip, even on the walk here when there were significantly more creatures and people that he could go running after. No, each time he had seen something of interest (or something he perceived as a threat) on the way to the park, she had warned him off with a simple “no” and he’d return to her side. It wasn’t always without its fair share of whining of course (he was still a curious baby, after all), but he had yet to disobey her completely. Now that they were here however, he seemed a lot more exciteable, something about nature awakening something in him. She was amazed he wasn’t cold- she was dressed up in a track jacket and matching pants herself, a light scarf draped around her shoulders. She supposed dragons had that internal fire though- he certainly had an attitude appropriate to that. It could also be the lack of people around making him more exciteable, giving him the opportunity to relax and run around without the threat of intruders.

Still, while Algol was friendly, or could be told to be friendly to other people… Fiera wasn’t quite as lucky. He loved her of course, or loved her as much as a giant meat eating lizard could love a cat lady, but he still had sharp teeth and long claws. It might not always be intentional ,though it often was, when he wanted something or was throwing a temper tantrum, but Algol had an irritating and often dangerous habit of using his teeth to solve problems and get what he wanted. As a result, Fiera found herself having to wear protective gloves and bracers more and more with him to avoid getting punched full of holes. The problem only got worse the bigger he got, too. While once he was but a tiny whelp, now the sarane was the size of a large dog. Fiera knew he’d only get bigger, too.

So, she knew that this biting problem was an issue she’d have to nip in the bud, if one would excuse the pun. Hence why they were at the park now- to train it out of him. She just had to find the right spot first. She turned around in a large field, looking for any landmark of interest that she could use to set up camp for the day. Sure enough, across the field was a large, ancient oak tree, looming over the empty plain. Yeah, that’d do it. She whistled to Algol, getting his attention. “Ok buddy, you ready? Let’s go! Let’s get that tree!” She said exciteably. Algol had no clue what she was saying, but her tone of voice clearly excited him, as he started wiggling all over and practically leaping in place. Despite his size, it was clear that this creature was still a playful baby.

Fiera knew that it wouldn’t last forever though- he was growing larger and larger by the day, and she knew that soon puberty would set in and she’d have to ‘break’ him. The idea sat heavily and depressingly in her mind, but that only reinforced her desire to enjoy it while it lasted. So off they went, racing each other across the open field, hopefully getting out some of that excess energy that had been bunched up in Algol since they left the kennel. He overtook her quickly, panting loudly as his body arched and bounced across the long grass, leaving Fiera laughing in his dust. “Oh, well done!” She said, panting, as they finally made it to the tree. “Your prize- you get to eat ALL the raw meat I brought with me. What a shame for poor Fiera, not getting to eat any half frozen, uncooked food.” She giggled.
