There was a first time for everything, Fiera supposed as she trudged down the street toward the Orbaru Breeding Center. She had heard about these strange, small animals in her nightly internet skimmings, and realized that she had a couple herself. They were absurdly cute little creatures, and wanted nothing more than to play and cuddle. In addition, they loved an eclectic amount of food, mostly sweet things such as berries, with candy for treats. Needless to say, creatures like that would never survive in the wild, but were largely beloved by the populace and were popular pets. Males had an orb on their tails (apparently a feature that female orbaru found very attractive), while females didn't, but both had the long ears and feet that made the species so distinctive and widely loved by the population of the labs. Fiera supposed it was pretty cute as well. Apparently, they were ridiculously fertile for lab creatures, and breeding them was somewhat of a hobby for citizens of The Labs. Going through her kennels, she realized that she had already picked up several of the creatures; she just hadn't known what they were at first. However, none of her own possible pairings quite appealed to her.

To rectify that, she had gone through the advertisements in the paper and online. There were more orbaru breeders out there than she had thought. It wasn't that difficult to find some that were willing to lend out their orbaru for others to breed. This led her to meeting a quite interesting mammalian known as Renathan. Mammalians weren't very common in her old home town. Before coming to the lab, she had met only a small handful of them, and they were only ever passing through. The attention and stares from the people in her city made sure of that- her town hated its own people, let alone outsiders. When Fiera came to The Labs, the massive variety of people was quite the culture shock. Peoples that she had only ever heard of were standing on every corner, with some that even Fiera couldn't recognize. She had had a very quality education back home too, so that was saying something. So by the time she met Renathan, she only stared just a little bit, and only when his back was turned. She couldn't help herself, really- she had never seen a mammalian with a tail quite so long. Or with horns!

The mammalian had a large variety of orbaru, certainly far more exotic than any of the ones Fiera had. She only had a paltry couple of V1s, with relatively plain colors and markings. She had managed to procure a couple of basic V3s as well, along with a more fancy one, and two V2s from a recent public contest. Renathans orbarus on the other hand seemed to come in just about every size, fur texture, and color, though Renathan assured her that they came in even more types than that. He was quite stoic and stand-offish, but Fiera supposed she could relate. She especially was able to put up for it for the offer he gave. Renathan's deal was that he'd grant the ability to use any of his orbaru in a breeding with an added 'baby berry' for free, so long as he got one of the resulting offspring. It was more than fair to Fiera, so she immediately leapt upon the offer, with much giggling and flapping of eyelashes. So that was how she had come into possession of one of the pet carriers she had under her arm- the one holding the orbaru known as Jack-O-Lantern.

Jack-O-Lantern was a very interesting example of an orbaru, she thought as she shifted his cave under her arm. He was awake, but quiet, observing the world as it passed by. Fiera was grateful for the cooperation. She was expecting Renathan's orbarus to freak out upon being separated from their owner, but Jack-O-Lantern seemed to have no problem with it. Then again, Renathan said that he had been doing this a lot lately. Perhaps little Jack was just used to being passed off to strangers by this point. She had never seen anything like his markings before (though granted, she had not seen man orbaru to start with). He appeared to have his skeleton printed over his dark fur in stark white. Some might say it made him look spooky, but Fiera found it very difficult to be intimidated by anything that cute and fuzzy. In addition, he had patches of red, orange, and yellow scattered across his fur, such as on his feet, ears, and chest. It made him very attractive to look at, and that was part of why he had picked him. She had also selected him for how compatible his markings were with her own orbaru, Roni.

Roni was one of the version two orbaru she had managed to procure, and she was absolutely gorgeous. Granted, she had a bit of a bad attitude, or maybe it was just spunk. Regardless, Fiera was very lucky she was sleeping right now- it would be a public spectacle to try and get them both to the breeding center otherwise. Roni had boundless energy, and was usually seen literally bouncing off the walls of the orbaru enclosure in her kennels. It took a lot of food placed in the back of the carrier to even get her to go in it, and Fiera was endlessly grateful to whatever god looked after orbaru that Roni had fallen asleep right after chewing through all of it. Her appearance was as equally gorgeous as Jack-o-Lantern's. She had stripes, just like any orbaru, but unlike most, hers glowed faintly. Fiera wasn't sure how that even worked, but it was certainly a sight to see, watching her body pulse with a pastel rainbow of different colors. It reminded Fiera of some parties she went to when she was younger- not that she was old, that is. Old memories of sweat and rainbow paint came to the forefront of her mind, giving her a nostalgic smile.

Between the two of them, Fiera could only imagine the sorts of offspring they'd make. The base black coats would be the default, she thought. No chance of getting white, grey, or patchy coats here. Not that those weren't pretty- it just wasn't what she was going for today. The lack of stripes on Jack might make for some faded markings, but stripes seemed to be a strong feature of orbaru- hopefully it wouldn't be that much of a problem. No, what she was really looking forward to was the mix of those vibrant accent colors on that stark black fur. Between the two of them, the offspring would likely have the basic black fur, but any variety of rainbow, neon, or sunset themed markings dappled across them. The result was stunning. Or at least it was in Fiera's mind. She had never bred orbaru before after all, and her imagination was just that. She supposed anything could happen, or even nothing. She didn't exactly have experience to fall back on here. Still, she didn't think it was going to be that hard. If it was a popular hobby here, then it would have to be easy to get into.

Renathan had given her Jack-O-Lantern, but he had given her a bonus 'breeding berry' as well. It was a fruit about the size of a peach, but unlike the peaches she knew, it had a colorful, marbled surface. Patches of pink, blue, and yellow swam across its glossy body, blurring together at the edges. It was almost too pretty to eat, Fiera thought. Then again, she wouldn't be the one eating it. No, instead this was meant to be fed to the orbaru, and would apparently make them have extra offspring after a breeding. Renathan had only requested one of those babies as payment, in lieu of credits or other forms of payment. That seemed fair enough to Fiera, but she had never done this before. Regardless, she was fine with it. She loathed feeling indebted to anyone, let alone a stranger. She wasn't sure how the berry worked, to be fair. Was it just stuffed with hormones? Or was it magic? She decided to not touch it too much regardless. She didn't need any of that weird stuff getting on her. Thankfully, as of right now it was stuffed in her purse, safely contained until it was time for it to be used.

So after she had bred the two, presumably they'd...make and have the babies. From there, she'd give one of the offspring- whichever one she didn't want, she supposed- to Renathan, and she would keep the remainder. Was it possible to get more than two? It was possible, she supposed. She had heard that the longer you allowed to orbaru to play, and the better they got along, the 'higher quality' the babies would be. Perhaps that would add up to an increase in quantity as well. She wasn't really sure how the mechanics of all this worked- lab magic, she supposed? Lab science? Weird stuff, overall. It wasn't her place to question though- not right now, at least. Maybe once she had gotten better settled, she could start investigating the mysteries of the labs. Who even ran this place? How were these creatures created? What happenned, exactly, behind the walls of this place? The creatures it made were clearly unnatural, as in the case of the orbaru, but they were still as bright and alive as anything else. Whoever ran this place...must be massively powerful. Or just rich. As far as Fiera was concerned, there was no difference.

On one hand, she wondered if this orbaru breeding stuff was even worth her time. She was somebody once, a rogue and a revolutionary, and now she was just breeding cute little rabbit things in the depths of suburbia? Had she really fallen this far? Or... did she deserve it? Not in a negative, punishment sense (though she was sure there were plenty of people back home who would have loved that), but instead at getting to have a chance at a life that was...peaceful. Nonviolent. Safe. The idea of getting to finally relax appealed to Fiera massively. And yet... another part of her would long not just for adventure, but for trouble. She was always looking to even the odds, to bring low the mighty, to help the weak, even if it meant she looked like a terrible person while doing it. She would probably get back around to that someday... but man, if she hadn't earned a vacation first. So that's what she aimed to do- relax. Recuperate. Train. Plan. And then, when she was ready, strike at the heart of mystery once more. She was just going to make some fuzzy orbaru babies first, that was all.

She turned the corner, and the breeding center finally came into view. It was a wide building, almost like a warehouse, but with a friendly, chunky aesthetic to it. "Breeding Center!" proclaimed its sign in cutesy bubble letters, and she could see further pieces of paper noticed pasted to the windows, with descriptions and rules. It was covered in windows, too, and she could see a variety of cute and cuddly creatures through them. Orbaru played around in one, and a pachee came up to another with a look of curiosity. A third window had a long, luxurious shape in it- a lotine, perhaps? She had heard of those as another breedable pet. The building was bigger than she thought, but she could see why- there was an almost constant stream of people coming in and out, with different creatures on leashes, clinging to shoulders, and in carriers. A pure black orbaru, a pachee with wings, a lotine with a purple, dusty look. She couldn't help but gawk at the variety of people and pets. She seemed hardly out of place, with two arms full of orbaru in carriers. This breeding stuff really was as popular as she was told!

She walked up to the doors of the breeding center. Posted to the windows were various licenses, rules and regulations, and other things like that. Fiera finally decided to push open the doors, and she sighed with relief as the cool air conditioning of the building wiped away the summer heat. What a nice change. She looked around at the waiting room. It was pleasant enough, with plenty of soft chairs and magazines. The tiles were pleasant shades of blue and pink, arranged in a nice pattern. Portraits of orbaru, pachee, lotine, and sarane were up on the walls. The light was surprisingly soft and naturalistic, and there was even a small area for kids to play. Or was it for orbaru, she realized as one hopped over. The front desk had a couple people clustered around it- looked like this place got plenty of business. A couple of other people were already settled in chairs, waiting for their turn in the breeding room. It seemed a congenial place, some of these folks had clearly met before and were chit chatting. Fiery kinda hated it, the feeling of being out of place. She trudged toward the front desk, carriers in hands.

Fiery sighed and set her carriers down as she waited in line. She wasn't exactly expecting excitement here, but this line was so long, and Fiera hated waiting around. She set Jack-O-Lantern down first, and set Roni down-very gently, as she was still asleep- on top of his crate. She tapped her foot and looked at the people ahead of her. Some of them were chit chatting pleasantly, and the person in front seemed to have struck up a conversation with the receptionist. Great. This was going to take forever! Fiera resisted the urge to groan. Was there an average wait time here? Fiera had prepared to be here for a couple of hours, but she wasn't prepared for most of that to be waiting. She didn't know anyone here either, so she couldn't fill her time with talking like everyone else. One of the orbaru wasn't hers, so she couldn't exactly take it out and play with him. And Roni... Was a handful at best. SHE might find the chaos that would ensue from letting her out amusing, but she doubted anyone else would. Furthermore, she didn't want to get in trouble or worse, kicked out for inappropriate handling of her orbaru.

The line shuffled forward a bit more. Fiera gently moved her carrying crates next to a chair, both to keep them out of the way and to reserve the spot for herself. She'd probably need it, with how many people were coming in and out. This would keep her from having to move the, up the line too. She opened her purse, looking through the contents. She got out all the paperwork needed first. She had already researched it all last night, printed it out, and filled it in. Hopefully there wasn't anything left to do on that end. Then, she noted that the breeding berry was still there. The traveling didn't appear to have damaged it, as it was still as perfectly glossy as it was when she had been given it by Renathan. Finally, her wallet and ID. Her photo, of course, looks terrible, but they were perfectly happy to grant her citizenship when she wandered up to the city, wet and bedraggled. She thought it was suspicious at first, but it soon became apparent that they really were that trusting here. Or stupid. Fiera knew that there was no such thing as being too big to fail, but did they?

Fiera's thoughts continued to wander, until someone cleared their throat in front of her. Oh. Apparently she had zoned out long enough that the line had died down, and she was now in front. With people behind her, and now SHE was the one holding up the line. Oops. The receptionist smiled politely. "Hi there, do you have your paperwork?" She said. "Oh, uhhh yes." Fiera said, slapping it down a little too hard. "Perfect." The receptionist replied, taking the papers and leafing through them. "Fiera Ferella, ID number... mm hm, mm hm... oh, breeding orbaru today?" Fiera smiled politely. "Yes, this time at least." "Excellent! It's always nice to see a new face around here. Did you schedule an appointment in advance?" Fiera cringed. "Ah, no, I was under the impression that you all did... walk ins here." The receptionist nodded. "Oh we do, but you might be waiting for a bit." Of course. That was just her luck. "Do you... know how long it's going to take?" Fiera tried. The receptionist put a finger up before swinging around to her computer. "Let's see..." She said, typing away at her keyboard. "We have..." A few clicks of the mouse.
