She immediately looked away, as if embarrassed by being caught out, but Fiera threw her the fish regardless. “Good girl, Serine!” She praises, and the tilvander leapt on the fish with gusto, shaking her head to tear off pieces. Gross, but at least it was effective motivation. Once Serine was done, Fiera didn’t get out another fish, wanting to see if Serine knew to respond for just her name. “Popcorn!” She called, waiting for a response. Nothing, as expected. She tried a couple of different words to make sure, but Serine ignored her. Then, the moment of truth. “Serine!” Sure enough, Serine looked up- looks like she knew that that word meant her! When she saw Fiera wasn’t holding a fish however, and realized that she had just done what Fiera wanted, she dived into the pool, as if hiding in shame. Fiera couldn’t help but laugh.

Fiera mentally checked one trick off, but there was still more to go. Serine still wanted nothing to do with her, but hopefully some discipline would be able to curb the worst of her princess-like behavior. As a result, Fiera decided to move on to another relatively simple trick. Serine was one of those critters who, when they saw something, just knew they had to have it, no matter what stood between her and the object. Food was frequently stolen from other tilvander or even right out of Fiera's hands, bedtimes were completely ignored, and good luck handling her for medical attention. She'd simply slide right out of your grasp and go hide somewhere. That behavior simply had to stop. As a result, the catlike humanish felt it would be best to teach the offspring tilvander 'no' next. At least Fiera knew it wasn't difficult to get her attention now...

Fiera sat down next to a large, flat rock, several feet from the water's edge. If Serine tried to make any sudden moves (such as running off with an undeserved treat), Fiera knew that her movements would likely be too awkward for her to get away back to the water before Fiera could catch her again. It was the perfect spot. Fiera set her cooler down next to her, and opened it. It was stuffed to the gills (pun intended) with frozen fish, a perfect summer treat for a tilvander. She took out a fish small enough to fit in the palm of her hand, and closed the cooler again. She set the fish on the rock... and waited. Soon enough, she heard splashes coming from the tide pool, and Serine leapt out of the water, making a beeline toward the fish. "Serine, NO." Fiera said, but the tilvander lunged forward anyway.

Just as the tilvander was about to nab the fish off the rock however, Fiera was able to snap her hand down around it, cutting Serine off. The tilvander nosed at Fiera’s hands, even tried nibbling on her (which got her firmly shoved off the rock), but to no avail. Fiera refused to move her hand. From there, Serine proceeded to throw a temper tantrum of incredible proportions- for a tilvander at least, squeaking loudly and rolling around in impotent rage. Fiera watched Serine’s meltdown impassively, never once moving her hand from the fish. After nearly ten minutes, Serine appeared to calm down, pointedly ignoring Fiera and the fish she was defending, facing in the opposite direction. It was then that Fiera lifted her hand, letting the smell of the fish waft over to Serine. “Good girl, Serine.” She said calmly, leaving the treat wide open on the rock. Serine glanced over hesitantly.

Slowly but surely, the tilvander crept back to the flat stone, as of expecting Fiera to take the fish back any second. Once she was in range, she hesitated... and snatched the fish right off the rock, chewing as fast as she could. “Goodness gracious Serine, you’d think I never feed you.” Fiera said with not a small amount of amusement in her voice. Then, she lazily reached over to the cooler and opened it again, taking out another fish. She placed it down where the last one was, it’s eye boring into Serine. Once again, she pointed at it firmly, said “No.” and put her hand over it before Serine could take it for herself. Once again, Serine tried to get at it, slapping uselessly at Fiera’s hand before settling down, quicker than before. This time, she stared at Fiera’s hand, fuming, only for Fiera to lift it up again.

Serine looked back and forth between Fiera and the frozen fish, as if judging her options. Eventually however, she leaned down to eat her treat with far more dignity than last time. Fiera let her work on it, taking her time while digging through the cooler. When it looked like Serine was done, she got out another fish. The tilvander immediately snapped to attention, eyeing the new treat, but Fiera only set it down and said "No." before she let go, pointing at Serine with the other hand. Serine paused for a moment, still eyeing the fish. Still, it took long enough for her to lean forward to grab it that Fiera could consider the trick complete. "Good girl, Serine!" She said. The tilvander perked up at the praise, and immediately leaned forward to take the fish. Fiera smiled- it looked like that with enough effort, the trick had finally stuck!

Training Serine to NOT do stuff was more difficult than Fiera had thought, but getting her to do things was still pretty difficult as well. She still had a couple more tricks on her list to teach her- hopefully she'd maintain her patience long enough to learn. Serine was a creature that got antsy easily, and getting her to focus was a task and a half. As Fiera ran through what to teach her then, she decided on something involving movement. Hopefully that would keep the tilvander entertained long enough that it would get some of that impatient energy out. Fiera began preparing, and backed up several feet from the shoreline of the tide pool, taking the cooler full of frozen fish with her. Serine kept an eye on her, but overall wasn't interested in Fiera walking away. If she was leaving her alone, Serine was perfectly fine with it.

That changed however, when Fiera popped open the cooler full of treats, and the smell of delicious fish wafted her way. Fiera plucked a decently sized one out before closing the lid again, and waved it around so Serine could see. "Serine, come!" She called, fully expecting the offspring tilvander to leap out of the water, bound over, and claim her prize. Unfortunately, Serine seemed quite hesitant instead, and remained lurking at the edge of the water. "Ugh, come on..." Fiera groaned. Eventually, she kicked open the cooler again. "What if I give you... two! Come here, Serine!" She said, waving a fish in each hand, not relishing the slimy texture. The seemed to break Serine's reticence, and the tilvander finally hauled herself up on to land. She undulated her way toward Fiera, not particularly enthusiastic about all of this, but unable to resist two items of her favorite food either.

Eventually, Serine arrived at Fiera's feet- and even began climbing her clothes at the same steady pace, unwilling to sit patiently. Fiera groaned at Serine's cold, wet feet, but a trick was a trick, and she still gave Serine the fish. Though she was sure to drop them a foot away first to get Serine off of her. "Good girl, Serine!" Fiera said as the tilvander chowed down. While she was busy though, Fiera hefted up the cooler again and retreated to another spot by the tide pool, this time closer to the lake proper. She slipped a fish out of it and dropped the cooler with a clatter, drawing Serine's attention. She lifted the fish again. "Serine, come!" She cried, and Serine trotted toward her, seeming to be more sure of herself now. Halfway there, she dropped into the water again. "Uh, hey... that's the wrong direction." Fiera stammered out.

Just as Fiera said that however, Serine burst out of the water, landing directly in front of her. Ah- it looked like she was using her speed in the water to take a shortcut of sorts. This time, she sat prettier for the treat too- as if demanding that Fiera hand it to her instead of making her jump for it. "I didn't make you do anything last time." Fiera grumbled, tossing her the fish. "You did that to yourself." Serine caught the fish in midair, tumbling backwards and eating it there, lying on her back. Fiera's mood couldn't help but be lifted by the ridiculous sight. "Alright then, Serine." She said. "It looks like you've mostly got this down pat, but let's give it one more go, eh?" She began walking away, but left the cooler there- if Serine was going to know this trick, she'd have to be able to do it without the treats.

Fiera returned to her original spot, the flat rock where she had taught Serine "no". Once she finished walking there, she waited until Serine had finished the last of her fish- which wasn't very long at all, as Serine ate with the speed and grace of a much sloppier creature. Once she was done, Fiera opened her mouth again. "Serine, come!" She called to the tilvander, voice echoing against the rocks, and sure enough Serine came slithering over, leaving a trail of water from the tide pool in her wake. When she arrived, she curled up neatly at Fiera's feet, expecting a treat to be given to her. "Atta girl, Serine!" Fiera said, and reached down to pet her. The tilvander recoiled at first, offended upon realizing there was no fish... but couldn't help but lean into the affectionate touch. Fiera smiled. Serine was a good girl... when she wanted to be.

Fiera only had one 'simple' trick left on her list to teach Serine. After that simple trick, there was only one thing left to teach, though it would be...interesting. The simple trick she was teaching now was probably going to prove the most difficult, however. 'Stay' was something that was easy in theory, getting a pet to not move, and had proved easy for many of Fiera's pets in the past, but... that was assuming that Serine wanted to come anywhere near her to start with. Furthermore, while she usually tied a pet to something temporarily in order to teach a pet stay, to keep them immobilized while she got the idea of staying in one place down, that wouldn't work with Serine. As an amphibian, she was simply too slimy for her usual ropes. She could quite easily slip right out, going wherever she pleased regardless of what Fiera's orders were.

Her best option, she realized after some thinking,, was probably the clever utilization of her treats. Without respect, that was about the only thing that motivated the tilvander. She dragged the cooler closer, ready to take out a treat. Serine was currently wandering the shoreline, digging through the sand and turning over stones curiously. That changed however, the moment Fiera opened the cooler. Fiera grabbed a fish and immediately closed it again. Just in time too, as Serine skidded to a stop in front of the humanish. Fiera held it up, well out of Serine’s reach, even as the amphibian tried to climb her legs. She then backed up quickly- thankfully Fiera could move far faster than her pet on land, and she soon built up quite a bit of distance. “Ok Serine, STAY.” She said firmly, but of course Serine had no way of knowing what that meant.

As expected, Serine started flopping her way closer. "No, stay." Fiera repeated. Serine paused for a second, tilting her head with consideration, before returning to her previous pace. What had she...? Oh right, Fiera had said "No." That was probably the best thing to use here, as Serine couldn't be restrained. Or at least, not restrained easily. Fiera didn't have what it would take to keep something as slippery as her from moving. She'd have to use the tricks Serine already knew. Fiera opened her mouth, and tried to put on her best 'commander' voice. "Serine, no...stay." She said, and Serine paused at the word 'no'. What was she doing wrong? She circled around, confused, and Fiera let her be so long as she didn't walk forward. Eventually however she tried again, and Fiera reiterated her command, emphasizing the second word. "No... STAY." Once again, Serine paused, and wound about in frustrated circles.

Fiera waited until Serine had stayed (approximately) in place for nearly a minute, before she let her hand come down, throwing the fish to her. "Good girl, Serine!" She said, smiling. The fish bounced off of Serine's head and Fiera cringed, until it became clear that Serine didn't really mind, flopping after it and happily chowing down. Fiera breathed a sigh of relief- hopefully that would be a start toward the right idea. While Serine was busy, the humanish got out another fish for her. Serine soon finished eating, and looked up as Fiera held up another fish. The tilvander made a tentative step toward her. "Stay..." Fiera said, holding a hand out. Serine hesitated- that was good, it showed that she was getting the idea, at least a bit. But, then she took another step. "NO!" Fiera was quick to correct, and Serine froze, still eyeing the fish. "... Stay." She followed up.
