The metallic sound of footfalls in the city was not an uncommon noise. Many a trainer would send their droids on errands when they themselves happened to be too busy to attend things. Sha’Nepti was no different, having walked these streets around the community area countless times on her store runs.
Today, however, was different. Today it was the mammalian who had gone shopping, and the droid being assigned to handle a topic of urgent nature in the city center - if Sha’Nepti had the capacity to understand this twist of irony in roles being swapped, she certainly gave no notion. Stranger still her company in the form of the shijin, who was still close enough to the shopping mammalian to accompany the droid along the streets, but not quite.. as connected with the droid as with her.
The topic of the day: an injured specimen on the run from the medics.

It had been impromptu, more an accident than anything else. The sphinx had been on her way to the shops when the questing board incident drew her attention and the plea had been forwarded. More than any other time before then the mammalian had wished she could be in two places at the same time, for the shop was open for only so long as she needed the food, but at the same time there was a creature in distress out there in need of help.
At first she figured to send Amonuro out to scout, but him unaccompanied wouldn’t have helped all too much. Once he’d found the creature, he could hardly do anything about it. A few minutes passed before the dawning occurred and she sent a mental command to the droid. It took her some time to arrive from the kennels, even if in flight, and once there, the mammalian awkwardly informed the shijin to aid the droid and took her leave.
Sha’Nepti was by no means an expert in organics, but the manner of leaving appeared hurried even to her sensibilities.

Most people would have found it odd. Most people would have begun to think on what cause it, why cause it and to what end. Sha’Nepti wasn’t most people. In fact she wasn’t in the same definition category of ‘people’. She was a droid, made to follow orders and do and aid in manners described.
Plus, it wasn’t all that difficult to figure it out.
So the two found themselves patrolling down some streets, Amonuro flicking back and forth through to air to get an above view while Sha’Nepti walked below, voice modulator making soft “boop, boop, boop” calls into the side streets. Their quarry was a female left-eyed right-injured orbaru of otherwise middling description. Status: frightened. Most logical course of action: seeking shelter in a designed safe space. The humanoids offering the task failed to, however, specify if said orbaru was likewise a stray or merely hiding among them. Depending on such a minor factor the designation of ‘safe space’ could have wildly different meaning.

Her head turned steadily left and right as if scanning the very horizon, though her optical sensors did not have as far a sensitivity as some other robotic entities. Droid she may have been but made to look, feel and, perhaps, be humanoid. With humanoid limitations. Sharper limitations than regular organics, but still just that.
A stray would have an understanding of the lay of the streets and the city itself. It would know more hiding spots and whether or when said hiding spots were viable depending on the shifting daily rhythm of the humanoids around them. For example: the shijin went higher up with the express intent on scouring rooftops while she kept her eyes on ground level. Orbaru could not fly, but their feet could kick them a considerably height, making climbing a viable escape mechanism. Whether the orbaru in question was injured during before, during or after containment attempts could adjust the parameters of their searching criteria.
For now, the shijin could remain higher up, until the droid found any clues to indicate this way or that.

A humanoid would have also wondered how it came to be there were so many stray orbaru to begin with. Sha’Nepti didn’t. She understood breeding mechanics in organics and mathematically speaking it could only take a few select breeding pairs of a fast-producing species to create a surplus of populace which spill beyond their containment bounds in order to merely continue their prior breeding practices, just without humanoid supervision.
It certainly would have explained the humanoids’ concern the missing orbaru’s location would be difficult to determine due to outside markers if said markers were largely shared among the stray population. The factor they had no genetic decay in their repeated breeding among the bloodline certainly didn’t help either.
Above the shijin flicked from rooftop to rooftop, trying to find anything from things hiding to clues to things hiding. The sphinx had given him the gist of the task, seeing as Sha’Nepti would have had a harder time conveying information.

The shijin had a connection to the sphinx and the sphinx to the droid, but there was otherwise no direct line between droid and shijin themselves. She sounded and had qualities of her, but Amonuro felt nothing from her the mammalian didn’t also feel, like a cold, blank void where his one should be. If not for the sheer amount of time the droid had been with them the shijin would have found it incredibly bothersome and uncomfortable, but he had gotten used to her presence a long time ago, even if the mammalian still hadn’t.
The rooftop search resulted in a number of things - some blown-over cardboard boxes when he swooshed past, a few startled jibiji fluttering away, one humanish with a spilled coffee mug on a balcony angrily yelling after him, a few smaller izer taking flight and some orbaru. Amonuro rounded on the orbaru huddled on a flat rooftop among some boxes and when they all went scurrying away from him, he had to note, with some disappointment, that none of them had any issue moving or limping, being fine and wholesome.

The blue head peeked over the edge of a rooftop, glancing down. The droid stopped to watch him, head tilting the barest of a fraction. The shijin shook his as a few orbaru jumped along rooftops behind him. The droid nodded and indicated forward, sending the shijin off to keep trying. Her own side of the search was not much better. Every now and again she would pause to peek into a statistically promising side street to find all manner of stray creatures there, some even orbaru, but much like the shijin’s quarry, all of them would scatter and in so display their quite excellent state of physical form, lacking any injured legs.
One particular side street produced a rather agitated estharne, who arched its back at the droid and hissed threateningly. A display of typical territorial strife, as if the droid was encroaching with the intent to take it over. Or, perhaps the estharne simply thought itself bigger and badder.
Sha’Nepti simply raised her arm, plasma bolt charging brightly in her palm, a static whine piercing sensitive ears. Her face made it unclear if it was in fact a threat. To the estharne’s credit, it quickly thought better of the strangeness and scurried off.

The alley it left behind held no further clue, but the incident did bring up a statistical log in the droid’s mind - by law of natural order, anything injured would be considered easy prey for predator species. Strays of the city came in both categories and even ones in between. Therefore, where there is the strongest commotion there is the highest statistical likelihood of the quarry being found. The droid had no ability to track scents and the shijin had no body to, but that didn’t mean other species were limited in the same capacity.
Sha’Nepti stopped, head looking upward. A moment later white spikes sputtered to life on her back and she shot upwards, landing on the edge of a roof with a quiet thud as the jets hissed off again. Ahead she could see the shijin making his loops, but he was only looking on the roofs. The droid’s head turned downwards and the fans of her audio receptors adjusted to a broader spectrum. Search above and in between.

Sha’Nepti kept to the sides of the roof, with much the same plan as before though it had been improved with new information and theoretical testing. She looked from above to below, to spot things on the side streets and holding out for any noise that might denote commotion, as commotion could mean something else in the city has found their quarry first. It, perhaps justly so, also meant anything hiding among the alleys was less likely to scatter on her approach. The creatures had run within seconds of her appearing when she had been on foot. Now that her perception was above down to below and the creatures’ attentions mostly on the humanoids moving on ground level there was more time to accurately account for denizens of particular alleys.
With short jet-propulsed jumps she skipped from roof edge to roof edge, pausing to walk the parts in between in what some could call quiet. It wasn’t, not entirely, for try as the droid might, she was but a bulk of metal and her footfalls still had some sound, unlike the shijin who had the benefit of hovering. Still, she tried.

Amonuro had no such issue, for his spectral form and wind affinity meant most hardly even noticed he had gone by, before he was already onward to the next roof. At least, as long as things weren't actively observing him.. in which case a lot of things, creatures and humanoids alike, were quite loud to make their surprises known as a glowing blue dragon suddenly shook up their daily lives. The further he went, the more he began to sense the tether slowly but surely starting to grow taut. The mammalian was at the shops, but he was very much limited in the range at which he could assist in the search before either he stopped or the mammalian had to move to give him more lease.
It wasn’t until he peeked over a roof edge, to give another head shake to the droid that he noticed the streets to be devoid of the robot. Briefly, it resulted in him beginning a whole new sub-quest called “find the TROD” before another propulsion hiss from a few roofs away caused him to spin around and spot the black metal figure walking on the roofs with him.
Briefly, the shijin huffed, face growing taut. This was supposed to be his job! Argh, very well. If the robot wanted to look on the roofs, he’ll look elsewhere.
The shijin whipped downwards, through the roof and three floors, to the shrieks of startled shower people and kitchen duties, before leveling out in the basement levels. If not above, then he’ll look below. WAY below.
