{We're going out? Really?}
Aster realized, belatedly, that he had maybe been keeping Rhys on too short a leash--- metaphorically speaking, of course, and not in the literal sense--- when this was the first question the Felusine asked upon being told that they were heading out together. Aster tried to search his memory for an occasion where they had gone off the property, or even out of the house for something that wasn't training, and couldn't come up with anything. Seeing the way Rhys's eyes shone now, he felt a little guilty about it.
Well, better late than never, right? "We're heading out for an... errand run," Aster said. "Someone wants us to find something as a favor to them."
{What are we looking for?} Without missing a beat, Rhys flew himself up to perch on Aster's shoulders. Aster could feel the soft hush against his hair as Rhys folded his wings along his back.

"It's supposed to be a crystal... Though the woman was a little sparse on the details. She said it was valuable, but." Aster gave a shrug. "The biggest clue we have is actually about who stole it. Apparently we're looking out for an old Nyssa in the gardens."
{The gardens?} said Rhys.
"There's an area of town where people have their own garden lots," Aster said. "We have one too, technically, but it's mostly just overgrown with brambles right now. I've tried clearing some of it, but... it's nothing much to look at." Come to think of it, the woman making the request also mentioned that the Nyssa was residing in an old, abandoned garden somewhere. It probably wasn't his lot, right? He didn't remember any trees in there...
{Are you okay?} Rhys said. Aster snapped out of his thoughts at that, shaking his head to clear it.
"Fine. Let's get going," he said.

The walk to the gardens was a long one, but the walk from their property to anywhere else in the city was long. Aster preferred it that way, even if it got in the way of convenience. Then again, it wasn't usually a problem he dealt with personally, at least as of late. He had Rabbit to run errands for him now, most of the time.
He'd preferred, thus far, to take up these quests on his own, though maybe one of these days... Well, never mind that. They were out here now, and the two of them ought to be enough to get the job done.
{So where is it?} said Rhys, looking around as they approached. The plots near the foremost part of the gardens were generally well tended, green and verdant and lush with plants--- mostly crops, the gardeners being an industrious lot, though decorative species weren't terribly uncommon here either.

"It's not going to be here. We'll have to go deeper in," Aster replied. He had been here a few times, enough to know that the further they pressed on, the more abandoned the lots would look. And sure enough, soon the green and well tended gardens gave way to other ones, places where there were only evidence of half-hearted attempts... And then, increasingly, of no attempts at all. Many of those lots were green too, though there was no order to them, and the foliage had a tendency to spill from the edges of the lot boundaries into the next, or into the path beside them.
{Oh,} said Rhys, who was taking all of this in. {It... isn't very nice back here, is it?}
"No," Aster said. He felt that he ought to say something else, something more, but he didn't know what. The state of abandonment here rather spoke for itself.

As he got a better look at his surroundings, however, something occurred to him. He had thought that spotting a Nyssa anywhere ought to be easy, especially if the woman hadn't been exaggerating about its size, but he was beginning to rethink that particular assessment. There were old, gnarled trees aplenty back here, some big enough that they might well have predated the establishment of the gardens altogether. Some might have been Nyssas... But without getting close, he felt it might be hard to tell at a glance. And if they got close, that would put them well within range of a swipe, if it decided it didn't like what they were doing.
Considering they were here to take back something it had stolen, Aster couldn't imagine that the Nyssa they were looking for was going to give them a very friendly reception. Maybe it hadn't been such a good idea to come with Rhys after all.
