The sun was still low in the sky, but its rays had warmed up just enough for Fanged to no longer freeze in the morning air. She sniffed, her nose running from the cold. Roxy was lucky to have so much warm, wooly fur. Even with the sun, she was still cold. She was simply no longer freezing.
"I wonder what all these plants are. Could they be hybrids? New species entirely? Maybe this is something I need to think about studying."
She had never taken much of an interest in plants before, but these ones intrigued her. Could someone be experimenting on plants and trying to bring about new species? Some of the lab created critters were plant based. Fanged had even heard about a place that could take a normal pet and turn it into a plant creature. The concept seemed strange to her and besides, it seemed to require a special bit of currency.

December A new month had begun and with that, the mansion had changed once again. Voxel was her chosen companion for this expedition. Their journey would not be without purpose. There had been rumors floating around town of something strange being sighted in the mansion. Fanged had immediately been overcome with intrigue. From what she could gather, a ghost had been sighted in the mansion. It was rather unusual considering the mansion wasn’t generally meant to be spooky during the month of December. “Well if there’s anything to find, we’re just the crew to find it,” Fanged commented. Voxel seemed like the right choice to take on a ghost hunting expedition. She felt thrilled at the prospect. It wasn’t everyday she was able to go ghost hunting on the downlow. “Maybe if it’s an ethereal being, you two will be able to connect.” It seemed like a sound strategy. Voxel theoretically should be an expert in all things ethereal. (Voxel 15 1/5, 15 1/5) 1

Voxel was excited at the prospect of returning to the mansion. He had lived here before Fanged had befriended him. He seemed a bit nervous, which she couldn’t blame him for. She had only ever seen his kind during the month of October and the mansion had changed dramatically since then.
“It’ll look different and I hope that won’t be too surprising!” she told Voxel.
The ethereal creature shook himself and then headed forward with his head held high. Fanged appreciated the confidence, but she wouldn’t have been disappointed if he was fearful. The mansion décor made it rather difficult to be frightened anyways. Winter was moving in rapidly and before the end of the month, it would be here in full force. Fanged didn’t quite know how she felt about the cold weather. She had always been rather ambivalent towards it, bordering on outright dislike. Being inside was definitely preferable at the very least.

She opened the door, holding it open for Voxel even with his ethereal form. She felt a surge of affection for her companion. Fanged hadn’t been used to working with others before Rusty had come along. She had met Voxel soon after and the two were now thick as thieves.
“Even if we don’t find anything, the mansion is still exciting to explore,” she commented.
Voxel pricked his ears forward. He was eager to explore the first room and he was not alone in that excitement. Fanged allowed herself to relax in the warmth of the room. The room was tinted with an orange glow which emitted from a fireplace located on the far wall.
“It looks electric. Not exactly the most exciting, but it’s theoretically safer than a regular fireplace,” she commented.
Voxel headed towards it. His eyes tracked the glowing, orange light. He tilted his head as he watched with interest.

She supposed that an orange, glowing light could be mistake for a ghost, but she doubted this was one of the signs she was looking for. She squinted her eyes, trying to see if she could make out anything meaningful in the room.
“I think this room might be a bust,” she joked.
The first room was usually rather unexciting. It was merely a placeholder. There for her to gather her thoughts before moving on to the more exciting areas of the mansion. She allowed Voxel a little extra time to explore the room. She didn’t want to rush him, the adjustment to the new mansion layout would likely take him a moment.
“Keep an eye out for anything that could be considered conventionally spooky,” she murmured.
When Voxel was ready to move on, he approached Fanged with his tail wagging. She figured that was a good sign and led him over to the door.

Once they entered through the door, the atmosphere appeared to change. She felt a heaviness in the air that seemed rather supernatural in essence.
“I think that’s a good sign,” she commented.
Voxel glanced at her, flicking his tail in acknowledgement of her words. Fanged felt herself grow more confident as her companion turned to explore the new room. Having backup made her feel safer overall. She didn’t need to have eyes at the back of her head to alert her to all possible dangers.
“That doesn’t mean I can afford to be too relaxed, however.”
She took the time to carefully examine the room. The walls were covered in a string of bright fairy lights. The effect made the entire room appear rather festive, despite there being no other decorations present. She felt a chill that worked its way down into her bones. It seemed rather odd for a room without windows to have a draft.

In the centre of the room lay a small cluster of items. One was a silver bell and next to it was a black scarf. Curled up in the scarf was a small pocketpet and Fanged was quick to collect them both. Voxel looked over in intrigue, taking the time to sniff at the scarf before Fanged put it safely away.
“Our first discovery! Though I don’t think this is much of a help for our ghost hunting expedition,” she joked.
Voxel grunted in agreement and the two turned to explore the rest of the room. The room was filled with an assortment of rather mundane furniture. Fanged felt fairly uncomfortable in the room despite it being rather normal in appearance. The chill didn’t help to put her at ease. There were painting adorning the walls which seemed to be rather unsettling in nature. They were abstract and she couldn’t quite make out what they were supposed to represent.

Voxel followed her as she crossed the length of the room. She drew closer to the paintings, making sure to examine each in close detail. The paintings were poorly made, as though they had been drawn by a child. The lines were shaky and uncertain and the colours clashed. Even if they were meant to be abstract art, they left a lot to be desired.
“I’m not much of an art critic, but I can’t imagine these are worth very much,” she remarked.
Not that she would ever steal furniture from the mansion. The idea of doing that seemed rather tacky. Voxel watched her closely as she finished up investigating the paintings. There was nothing about the paintings that felt too out of place. At least nothing that would imply supernatural meddling.
“Maybe we should head to the next room. It doesn’t seem like there’s anything left to figure out in this one.”

Voxel dipped his head in acknowledgement of her words. Fanged gave one last cursory glance at the paintings before turning to the door. The door itself was thankfully unlocked, almost as though the mansion knew she was on a mission. She opened the door quickly, ushering Voxel through before stepping in after him.
“Be on alert,” she told him.
The next room was dark and difficult to see in. Fanged felt herself feeling a bit uneasy about her situation. She wasn’t fond of the darkness when it was in a place that she was unfamiliar with. She was far more comfortable with darkness when she was in her own home or even a place she had scouted out before. But with the mansion, rooms were ever-changing and the mansion remained unfamiliar. Voxel could at least navigate well enough in the dark. Fanged couldn’t help but feel slightly envious of that fact.

She paused for a moment, realizing that being bitter over her situation didn’t serve to help her. Instead, she changed to feeling gracious that she had Voxel to accompany her. She mused for a second that there were ways that someone could see in the dark that didn’t rely on eyesight alone. She hadn’t wanted to risk losing her flashlight that she had bought for mining somewhere deep within the confines of the mansion. She wasn’t exactly made of credits after all.
“Stick close Voxel, I won’t be able to see without you,” she told him.
Voxel made a point of brushing against her legs with his ethereal body. No true contact was made, but the gesture reassured her. It gave her the confidence she needed to do a once over of the room. She held one hand out and pressed it against the wall. First, it was necessary to gauge how large the room was.

Feeling her way around the room was a bit of an ordeal. Voxel made sure to stick close to her, making things a slight bit easier on her. She felt herself slowly starting to relax as she got more comfortable with the layout of the room.
“This room is rather sizable, which means it will take a while to explore.”
Her fingers itched as the compulsion to scratch at her scars surfaced. She tried her best to quell the urge, but the resistance only served to make her fingers ache. In order to distract herself, she decided to thoroughly search through the rest of the room.
“If you see anything of note, be sure to let me know, okay?”
Voxel yipped in response to her words. She hoped he could understand what she had asked, but it was difficult for her to tell when it came to her creatures. Could they ever truly understand her?

Just as she was starting to get a true feel for the room, a small noise caught her attention. Hidden away in one of the corners was a tiny pocket pet. It was chasing after a small bell, batting at it with tiny paws. Fanged was quick to scoop it up and put it away securely inside a bag she had brought along.
“At least that should fetch me a few credits,” she murmured.
Voxel peered curiously at the bag, interested in the prizes she had stashed away. She supposed it brought a certain thrill to the exploration. The prospect of finding treasure was exciting for the both of them. But their ultimate goal for this expedition was to find a ghost. That meant that Fanged needed to keep an eye out for any signs of paranormal activity. She inhaled deeply, calming her nerves. She needed a cool head for ghost hunting.
