A dapper looking mammalian in fine garb, pale furred and m somewhere between feline and mustelid in body, an unclear blend. He was impeccably dressed though, making Fiera think that this Quest would be monetarily worth it at the very least though. Her brain skimmed over the parts about pocket pets and a tool shed, skipping straight to the best part. A summer home! She would be getting paid to hang out at a gorgeous house in a beautiful part of the wilderness surrounding the labs? Oh, what a difficult task! She’d have to make sure to stay extra long to complete it to the best of her ability. She didn’t want her client to walk away unsatisfied, after all! Fiera 1 Arethusa 0.1/0.1 1

She could almost imagine the place now, as the mammalian described it- high on a beautiful hill, sloping down to a massive yard, fenced in for when they let the pocket pets out. The area was so sloping and hilly though that even with the fence, you got a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The area was also gorgeous and natural, with tall, virgin pines and plenty of songbirds to entertain. Fiera was so looking forward to her beautiful day in the sun... oh and to her uh, fixing the pest problem. How had the mammalian described it again? She was sure he had mentioned what was breaking into his mate’s tool she’d, but she couldn’t quite recall what. Not that she wasn’t paying attention or anything! No, he just wasn’t too clear. That was fine by her- surely Fiera could figure it out.

The afternoon was quite beautiful, the sun just starting to encroach on the hills around them. The path they were on was wide enough for vehicles or large pets such as Thundergug to pass by on, but this place was so remote that Fiera hadn’t seen one this whole time. That was a good thing too- Arethusa was a brand new purchase, and she’d hate for the equillion to get spooked and bolt. Although... Arethusa has proved quite a placid creature so far. Equillion were normally prey creatures and thus easily startled, but Arethusa clearly had some predator blood in her. Her jaw was long and her teeth were sharp, a bright red tongue flicking out between them from time to time. Her ears even seemed predatory, bristling with spines and rotating like radar dishes, picking up every little bit of sound. Fiera found her face fascinating to watch overall.

Needless to say, while most equillion seemed fearful or skittish, those same facial movements on Arethusa gave her the air of a carefully calculating predator, watching and waiting for the chance to strike. Which was exactly why Fiera brought the scaly equillion along. She knew that if she was going to be scaring some strange animal off of the property, she’d likely need to bring along something bigger and scarier. Fiera had wanted to spend more time with her new equillion anyway, so she decided to kill two birds with one stone and drag the creature along. Arethusa hadn’t protested yet- in fact, she had yet to show any emotion other than placidity. The creature’s personality seemed almost reptilian in nature- calm, sluggish, and one track. Something in Fiera’s heart told her that she shouldn’t be underestimated though- calmness should never be mistaken for apathy.

Still, at least Arethusa’s ability to go with the flow made it easy for them to get here. It was quite a long trek. Fiera couldn’t even see the spires of the labs anymore, only the tops of tall copses of trees and long, rolling hills. The road they were on was the only sign of human life- though this area was still apparently all part of The Labs still. She hoped they’d find the estate soon though- her legs were starting to get tired. Just as the sentiment crossed her mind though, a shape started to crest the hill ahead of them. Sure enough, as Fiera watched, the estate they were looking for rose into her field of vision, and it was everything she had wanted. Fiera had to resist the urge to squeal with joy as she rushed toward the cottage- held back only by Arethusa’s plodding pace.

It was a gorgeous cottage- and surprisingly big, the size of a regular one story house. Despite that however, it still had the same charming cobble walls and thatched roof. She scurried up, and peeked through a window. As expected, the room inside was dark, but perfectly modern. She glanced left and right- as expected, there was another secondary building off to one side- likely the pocket pet breeding facility that had been mentioned. She had to admit, it kind of ruined the rustic aesthetic, with metal walls and a modern looking door. She supposed that pocket pets, uh. Needed extra security though. Or something. Whatever, they could have at least glued some rocks to it. It was tacky like that, and blocked the lovely view. And OH, what a VIEW! She took a few steps back, just to take it all in. It was everything she had been expecting.

The hills rolled out before her, covered in a thick carpet of grass, with the occasional picturesque tree, nodding low and stuffed with leaves that were only just starting to turn. Further back, the hills leapt further and further until they finally arched up into mountains. Fiera could have sat there and watched forever, were it not for a mysterious crunching noise next to her. She turned, only to find her equillion eating her employers’ perfectly manicured bushes. “Arrie!” She squeaked, pulling her away with the harness. “Stop that!” Arethusa did, staring at her blankly.., but still quietly gnawing on a leaf. Fiera huffed and looked at the damage. Thankfully, it was small and only in one spot. “...Whatever.” Fiera grumbled. “We can blame it on the tool thief.” Oh, right. The tool thief. For a moment, Fiera had forgotten what they were actually there for. She stood up, brushing off her pants.

She trekked around the side of the cottage, looking for that mentioned shed. The metal shack was far too big to be it- it was nearly the same size as the house! No, what she was looking for was likely a lot smaller. Sure enough, as she came around the side of the cottage she found a tall white picket fence, with a giant willow tree hanging over the far side of it. And sure enough, from this angle she could just barely see the roof of a shack. “Aha! Mystery solved! Aren’t we clever, Arethusa?” She said, but the equillion showed no reaction. “Now to get in!” She tittered, and flounced back toward the front door of the cottage. She grasped the handle on the front door and tugged... only for it to not budge in the slightest. She pulled it a couple more times just to make sure.

Yep, she had been locked out. Probably on purpose too, now that she thought about it. Her job was to patrol the yard and catch whatever had been breaking into the tool shed, not sit inside the house on those very comfy looking chairs she had seen and watch the sun set. She huffed, miffed about it. It would have been nice to at least give her access to a bathroom, the jerks. Still, at least she had come prepared. Having the feeling something like this might happen, Fiera had brought a sleeping bag and a very small, simple tent. Not her most favorite place to sleep, but it would do. She gave the interior of the cottage one last longing glance through the window, at the plush carpeting, antique decorations, and heated interior before turning away sadly. Alas, it was not meant to be, she thought, a single tear rolling down her cheek.

Just outside, impressed into a rather sturdy block of ground all things considered, was a print of some sort. A paw? A foot? A track of machine? One would have to look at it and take a good guess.

She hoped the fence wasn’t locked, though. Sure she could hop it, but 1. She didn’t want to explain to her client that she had to break into their property, as simple as it would be to do, and 2, She wasn’t sure how she’d get her equillion over the fence, and she sure wasn’t leaving Arethusa unattended. Her fears were unfounded though, as the entrance to the yard was a simple lash- there wasn’t even a deadbolt holding it shut. She’d be worried for the creatures living here if she didn’t know that pocket pets were far too small to reach the latch, and even if they could fly, probably far too dumb to work it anyway. Fiera wasn’t that dumb however, and was easily able to flip it with a single finger, letting herself and her pet into the yard.

As Arethusa plodded in however, something caught Fiera’s eye. She closed the gate, letting the equillion get to know the area as she investigated. Sure enough, there was something imprinted into the ground there, different from Fiera and Arethusa’s own tracks. It was a tiny footprint- long and elegant with just two toes. Huh. What could it be from? She ruled out the pocket pets that lived here- they were always inside the gate anyway. Furthermore, while the footprint itself was small, she could guess that the creature it came from was larger by comparison, if not by too much. Other than that though, Fiera couldn’t really tell what kind of creature it came from- she was no expert in critter tracking. There was no way of knowing if it was from the thief or not either. For all she knew, it was just from some passing by animal.

Fiera looked left and then right before realizing that she was being silly- who was going to notice her investigating a footprint out here? Furthermore, who was going to care? That’s what she was being paid to do after all- figure out who was stealing the tools. So she got out her phone and took a quick snap of the footprint for future reference. Might as well. When she went back into the gate, she saw that Arethusa had made herself more than comfy, sitting pleasantly under the shade of the willow tree, looking at Fiera with her blank and beautiful eyes. Fiera gave the equillion a respectful nod before beholding the rest of the yard. It was just as pretty and cute as the rest of the property, much to the humanish’s delight. First, there was the willow tree, draping over the far edge of the fence, right around the middle of that end.

Bordering the yard on each side was a picket fence, clean and picturesque. Finally, the yard itself had a variety of cutesy details- perfect green grass with pretty looping dirt paths leading to different parts of the yard. A sliding door led out onto the first path, with the ones leading from the latch doors on either side segueing into that main one. Then, the path led to a variety of toy features such as a playhouse and slopes to run up and down. A variety of colorful toys were scattered around, cutesy and chunky in form. Fiera snorted and punted one over to the other side of the yard. Unexpectedly, Arethusa caught it midair, making the tiny colorful worm thing let out a loud squeal as the equillion bit down. These toys weren’t quite Fiera’s style, but she supposed that it wasn’t her place to judge.

While Arethusa enthused herself with the squeaky toy (another thing destroyed that Fiera could blame on the thief, Fiera checked the back sliding door of the house. Locked. Fiera sighed, resigned to her fate- it looked like she really wasn’t going to get into that lovely house. What a shame. She gave it another half hearted tug, but soon gave up and walked away. That only left one more feature of interest- the tool shed. It stood at the back of the fence next to where the willow hung down, as if the owner of the cottage was ashamed of something so ugly and functional in an otherwise sickeningly cutesy place. The humanish am led up to it, examining it carefully. It really was a regular tool shed, with rough, red painted wood and a tin roof. Completely mundane. The door however, was locked up securely with a large padlock.
