(Pre-bonding, newly adult Mintaka, still going by Mintek.)Ah, the wonders of being newly able to fly! If only Mintek was enjoying it now as he did the last few times he had managed it alone. It was a new skill to him, but he took to it a little better than most lashak did. Perhaps it was his parentage. He had been a rookery baby after all. That was what had him frustrated today, actually. Well, part of it. It was an incredibly difficult thing to process, after all. Now that he was grown, he felt like he saw less and less of his human partner, and it angered him every single time that they left. He tried to hide it, thinking it a little base to get so frustrated as he realized his unique position; a lashak having been taught fluent common! And a lashak that couldn't breathe fire. That was what stung him so often, but today it wasn't really even that either. A billion tiny frustrating pieces, and he was scarcely an elder teenager basically. Not that he would admit something like that. [1]

Mintek had never Seen another Lashak. Not one, but he heard of them. Larger, fire-breathing, menacing. They didn't have his gift with language, not nearly as well, but young hot-blooded Mintek found himself more and more wishing that he felt at home somewhere, anywhere. He wasn't nearly as witty as some draconics, and not nearly as powerful as others. He felt a bit like a middle-of-the-road individual, and for some reason that stung his pride. He only ever felt at home by his partner's side, and it was hard really, since he also had this urge to... UGH he wanted to be Right for once! Just once! All of this culminated in a young Mintaka pushing from his den in the rock wall, unfolding his green tinged wings (from his mother, or father, he wondered? He'd never know) and immediately catching wind. He let the wind spill, and then climbed, wings beating. Really, he didn't even know where he was going.

Arguing with one's non-draconic partner/friend was pretty difficult in general. It wasn't something that was super common, since draconics and people tended to walk hand in hand. However, Mintek still wasn't sure of his lot in life. Right now, he just wanted to get some anger out. He did so, dashing down through the air, diving at rams. He hadn't gotten one yet, not a single ram, but he wanted to. He wanted to be more self-sufficient. After a few rather shakey attempts, Mintaka 'accidentally' hit one of the rams, crushing the thing up against the side of the canyon, and just about hurting himself in the process. He hadn't expected to actually 'get' the creature this time. Still, he locks his claws around the creature and clutches, and then instinctively pulls off of the canyon wall with a wince; his wings a little sore. He suddenly wasn't quite sure what to do with it.

Honestly, Mintek wasn't hungry. He hadn't really expected to get the ram, but now it just felt like a waste. Not to mention, the thing was Heavy. He glanced down at the dry-season canyon below as he skimmed a little too dangerously low, looking for somewhere to land and relieve himself of the weight of this fluffy... Thing. He was having a little bit of a hard time flying, so it was perhaps a good thing that he preferred night flights because there weren't many draconics or people out during that time period. He pulled a little too close to a rock and had to fight to fly back up- immediately he saw a good flat surface to land on. He wasn't too great at landings yet, and admittedly, the ram was a bit too heavy for his age. He managed with great difficulty to just barely stick the landing on the flat rock.

Mintek was a little more than excited that he was able to stick that landing, and had scarcely folded his wings before he dropped the ram and landed on it. Perhaps he looked a little cooler doing that than he thought that he would originally. He was still young enough to care about that kind of a thing, so he turned around quickly to make sure that no one had seen that... Good, doesn't look like anyone was behind him. He quickly got down off of the ram, and then looked up. What was this place? Someone's strange fancy den? It was strangely temple-like, ornate. It was way too big to be someone's den, Mintek wasn't sure if there were draconics big enough to live here. No, it seemed like this was some sort of... Gathering place? The ram momentarily forgotten, he steps up to the steps of the place he doesn't yet know is actually The Clutch Temple. Young individuals could really be so blinded by their pride so easily!

The first thing out of any other draconic's maw when asked about 'that lashak that never seems to talk' would be "she's a loner, and eats children." It wasn't an entirely false statement. But the little shell shards became very taken with Auntie and Auntie didn't want to play, especially with her tail as the toy. Perhaps she'd bitten the little shard a bit harder then intended, but hadn't killed it. That much she knew. Burned it, maybe. But the baby did what babies do, drag themselves back to mama, crying, and out comes Mama. They'd fought briefly and being smaller then other lashak, she'd been literally kicked out of the den. Fine, they could starve themselves by feeding too many mouths at once. Lashak by design were quite good at capturing rams and such. This female seemed more keen on cooking it to death first, then eating it. Burn off all the fluff. [6]

The time it takes to pick ram fluff out of one's teeth, especially those notched ones in the back of your maw, a horrible time. Swallow your own hand, why not, practically have to do that while picking out the fluff. It stuck to the barbs on your tongue too. Much easier to digest if its already turned to coal. Coal you can eat. Cleans your insides. The female lashak took to the skies without looking back at her home den. The den was way too crowded once the "Clutch Temple" deemed the hatchlings healthy and sent home with the excited parents. Five squeaking shell shard mouths, always hungry. ALWAYS. Forget adults being greedy guts, it all went down a baby's maw, and most out the other direction, or the same even. Shaking the acursed images from her head, seeking to do something other then listen to all that. So it wasn't entirely false that she ate children; but mostly. Because she'd never actually eaten a child. [7]

The dry season would be ending soon, rising the levels of the river to the point where the rams who ventured the bottoms and edges of the canyon walls would drown if they decided to try going down to avoid a flying predator. She disliked fish; they were more bone then meat, and the meat was white. She liked the red meats; the redder the better, but most meat didn't remain red after being cooked to death. Hence the taste of coal. Her own taste senses were just... blah. Its food, goes in, gives energy to fly and eat more. Simple stuff. As she angled her wings to skim at a distance to the bottom, the lashak noticed another lashak, at least by body shape. Diving and failing to capture a ram. Repeating the motions. A new hunter or a child on its first hunt. Unlikely on both thoughts, the creature seemed about her size, even a bit bigger, for now. [8]

Now this was interesting, for the other lashak finally seemed to have captured a ram at last. Crashing into it, and then into the wall. Crude, and not exactly effective but as the ram no longer moved, it would be effective then. It didn't quite click on 'why' but who cared. She simply hovered for another minute or so before moving on. The strange hunting technique didn't interest her anymore. That, and she had the wingpower to carry her into the sky and cook birds out of it. Like right now, a nice fat goose flapping its way south. Or whatever migratory bird; she didnt' care. And it was now cooked. Opening her mouth, a long gout of flames ignited forth, capturing the bird in the inferno before it fell, smoking, to earth, Granted, she had to dive to catch it, but she could dive very well. At least, that was her own pwersonal thoughts. [9]

What she didn't expect this time around was something to come shooting out of nowhere, stick into her dinner, and send it down to earth even faster. Lashak aren't strong thinkers. But human hunters are a thing in the canyons. They came, could "befriend" one of the draconics, and fuse themselves into their lifestyle. Even bond further then that; but that was an ugly thought. Her own rather seclusive upbringing, away from humans, not taught anything, she could be considered just a wild draconic. Becuase that was a good portion of the canyon population; only certain breeds even tried to take a human mate-partner-friend-whatever. The human escaped into where she could not go without a second thought, and there went her meal. Pulling out of her dive took a bit and she had to avoid going striaght into a structure. Now just catching herself on the structure's roof, the lashak sneers up towards the ridge where the human vanished. Food thief! Whatever is below her is not seen. [10]

Mintaka was perhaps not the wisest individual. He was quite smart, at least for a lashak, but that came with parentage and not of his own merit perhaps. He just hadn't seen the world enough to really know what to expect. So he was woefully ignorant of the fact that, perhaps, one shouldn't leave one's food sitting out in the open like that. He heard a noise, and glanced up without worry. He was more keen on figuring out the source of the sound than of anything else, and immediately his frills went up. There was a lashak; red and gold... And fire. The smell of it, he could sense that at least. Perched up there atop of the structure of wherever this place was. He tilted his head, unsure of what to say or do. He could speak a bit of draconic, and could speak more of common, but he knew that this lashak may not even know common. So he kinda stands there, looking a little stupid for a second, and then decides that he needs to look tough. "Whatcha do up thar?" He said, in broken draconic. Great, smooth move, doofus.

Craning her head up and away towards the ridge where the food thief disappeared to, the female lashak roars angrily. Food thief! Get down here where I can reach you and eat you instead! Its a barbaric sound, of no socialization whatsoever. But no small pink people emerge to challenge the angered draconic. No blackened meat thrown to feast upon. She snorts, exhaling a bit of smoke before turning her attention to just where she was. On a roof, or at least an angled surface. Her claws dug into the rock as she survey-oh what was this. Looking down at last, she sees the same... same colored lashak that had crash landed with a ram. And that ram was still there, with it. He speaks, actually speaks words. Wait, lashak can talk? Her own frills flatten, a snarl twisting her maw into a toothed grimace. Get away from that food. It is mine now. [12]

Oh, oh; that was different than even Mintek had expected. He suddenly sort of looks like a deer in headlights, not that he would have ever seen such a thing to have realized the similarity. His bright green eyes blinked, and then he seems to get his bearings. Immediately his wings went up. Something inside of him tried to kindle a flame that was never there in the first place. Alas, he could not breathe flame even if his body and instincts naturally tried to anyway. Instead, his frills and wings are up, and he hisses. Mintek was raised by a human, and he had no idea what he was supposed to do. He backs up a single step, putting his hind foot on the ram's head. He wasn't even hungry, not really, but giving this wild lashak any sort of ground would cause him issues in the long run, he was sure. What should he do? He tried not to look like he was trying to come up with an option. He was smaller than her, muscle-wise at least.

Its all over him, that human stink. She can smell it over the smell of the ram, and the canyon, its not even that potent, but still strong enough to linger. Probably harboring a human hunter somewhere. But what mattered more was the food that the littler lashak was standing on. Smoke curled out of the gaps of her teeth, her appearance growing slowly more intimidating. Its that single step of backing up to stand on the food that gives her the idea that he's not... not entirely full grown? Young hunters got very possessive over uneaten kills. Granted, he wasn't belly flat over the beast, shielding it with his body to protect a kill. Not that stupid, at least. She wasn't planning to yield, not if her stomach had any say in this. Flying took a lot of energy, especially on an aerial dive and chase. Now the question was, who would spring first. She could feel the inner instinct of flame ready to burst forth when she opened her mouth wide enough. Natural flint starters. [14]
