The withering glare that Morgan was given by the young man was absolutely what Morgan expected. It actually made Morgan proud. 'I've done a good job taking care of us.' He said, but his eyes said otherwise when he looked over Poppy. Morgan moved past him to Poppy's side, and Nico followed them, having finished licking all of the crumbs from the little boy's hand in a friendly way. "You have. It's admirable. You can do so much more for yourself and for him. And for Poppy." Morgan was already pulling out a stethoscope. They didn't know much about vetting, but they knew enough basic information to be able to get an idea as to whether to make him a healing salve, curing salve, or something else. Nico reached up and licked Poppy's head, right between the ears. Poppy opened his eyes- one blue and one brown, and wagged his tail once. [16]

For now, Morgan and Nico forgot about the pair standing behind them, undoubtedly feeling awkward. Morgan checked the creature's breathing, and looked over Poppy's body for any holes for a bite or anything. Morgan gently pried his mouth open and looked at the gums, wafted a bit of the creature's mouth to see if it stank. It didn't stank, but he had pale gums. After checking a bit around on him, Morgan decided. "Doesn't look like poison. When did this start?" Morgan asked, without any amount of anger in their voice. They pulled off their backpack and began digging for certain amounts of different bits and bobs. They quickly used a device they had made theirself to mix the ingredients, and then they worked on that as well. They figured a small healing salve may help. The pair looked at each other behind the master and hound. Finally, the older male spoke. 'Poppy has been this way for two weeks. It seemed pretty sudden, but we don't... I don't have the time or money to take him to the healer.' He said. [17]

Morgan wasn't angry. They were ill informed. Morgan could remember being ill-informed. Morgan had, after all, accidentally went to the wrong Temple in the beginning with Waar. After a moment, Morgan had the salve ready. Morgan gently placed it in his mouth, on both sides of the gums. "That should do it, give him a few minutes to lick it." Morgan said, and then stood up and took a step back. Immediately, Nico gets up onto the bed, since he was used to doing that at home, and then he curled up beside Poppy. Aww, well, he could stay there Morgan thought, until Poppy was better. Morgan put all the things away, and then slung their backpack across their back. The child walked over to the bed and leaned out to pet Poppy and Nico. Morgan slipped out of the room, and stood in the living room with the young man. "Here, I'm gonna give you some numbers. One of them is mine, the other is a friend of mine. We could use a mechanic, and we'll pay you more than enough for you two to live." Morgan knew that giving the guy actual money right away would insult his pride.
It sure would Morgan's.

Morgan watched the young man nod stiffly. "Look, I know I've got money. I also know that technically you can't be hired at your age by large hirers. I'm not gonna take advantage of you. Go around, look for all of the rates paid per hour by the folks that can't hire you yet. I'll double it. If you don't wind up being good at the job, I can train you, though I'm sure you don't need it. I can't stand knowing that you two and Poppy are living here like this when you're a mechanic." The guy looked like he was gonna argue. "I'd like to hire you to fix some of the people's stuff on this side of town, in fact, if you'd let me. You know the area better than me, and you two could move outta here." That was that. Morgan wrote down the two numbers in looping script and in green ink. Morgan also put down the numbers of some of the best paying mechanics-jobs around.
The guy whispered thank you, just as the kid excitedly came into the living room, Nico and Poppy frolicking behind him. Morgan smiled smugly, of course they'd chosen correctly.

Morgan let Nico play with Poppy, and Morgan gave the kid a few of their extra toys, and even slipped him a fifty credit denomination and told him not to spend it in one spot with a wink. Morgan listened to the teenager talk, about whatever he wanted. It made Morgan feel a little more human for a moment. They'd rather hire this guy to help out around here than continue throwing money into charity when it obviously wasn't helping here. After a good long hour, Morgan bid them farewell, and left them the rest of the healing salve just in case anything else happened. At that, Nico and Morgan made their leave. Morgan's tense muscles only relaxed when they were halfway back across town. They felt awkward, raw sort of. Nico walked at heel, and looked tired. He'd tired himself out playing with Poppy, after all. Morgan stopped off in the bathroom at home, and washed their face, feeling kinda sick.
People were more complicated than Morgan had given them credit as being.
