A Brief Introduction to the Setting
To ensure your character fits in with the world of the forums, we’ve prepared a brief outline of the official setting for those who want to jump right in.
- the world of Pethia is similar to Earth, but inhabited by monsters
- technology is concentrated in small areas of innovation
- magic also exists, but is rare and hard to obtain
- within the last few decades, a laboratory was constructed, which plundered a hidden source of magic to create creatures of both magic and science, superior to those of the natural world
- these creatures were given out for free, intended for use by people as companions, guards, etc.
- however, these lab creations soon out-competed natural creatures, driving them to extinction
- the city surrounding the Labs is the official setting; all races are welcome, and prejudice is not tolerated
The World
As we know it...
Imagine a planet, peaceful and serene, floating in space like some treasured jewel. The gods had long since closed their eyes and fallen asleep, unaware of what would happen to their children, and how things would begin to take shape.
The continents split apart, and the islands that soared above the clouds had fallen into the sea. Creatures from the depths rose up onto the peaks of the land and others sought refuge beneath the mountains. For hundreds of years, the world shook, and each nation had called it a different name. The sands of time had long since passed, and the world settled back into a peace, but nothing would ever be the same.
The monsters had become only a sliver of what they were before. They were dumbed down, hidden within the deepest of jungles and secret seas. Far away from the human eye. Only whispers now existed of what was once. There were stories and legends, and people passed through time, in their own ways, as they always did.
There are no cars, and cities contain no skyscrapers. Technology is limited only to those who are lucky enough to get a hold of it, such as an apprentice to a master tinker. To those tinkers - engineers and scientists - they have the world at their very fingertips. Hovercrafts and cures to horrible illnesses are all theirs to harness. Life itself can be easy to shape... but it always comes at a price. The technology itself, no matter how clean or wonderful, is usually hidden away from the public eye, much as the monsters are.
Magic still exists in the world, but it is lost to the people. Rumors are spread, that some people, hidden deep in the belly of the world, still hold true to this magic.
Time is a fickle thing. Sometimes, it moves along nice and slowly, steadily pacing through the heavens, and sometimes it decides that things aren't moving quickly enough, leaping over a stepping stone in an instant. That is exactly what happened here.
From an old abandoned property that existed only in whispers and rumors, a new building was erected. The old occupants long since moved out, and the laboratory had been constructed. From some mysterious source, the magic was found and plundered. Flesh and bone were shaped and severed, twisted and fused with both magic and science to create creatures that were both wonderful and terrible, seemingly made to rival their more natural brethren.
There was no malintent... no malintent at all. These creatures of the labs were given out for free. That's what they were created for, as companions and pets, guard dogs, or for no reason at all. The natural creatures of the world were losing their territories to the lab-created creatures, and were quickly becoming extinct, but nobody seemed to notice. At least not at first...
The Draconics, stirred by the silent cries above their lairs, finally awakened. They realized that the world had changed since the days of old. Long before, people had mixed feelings about the Draconics, so they had hid. Some people looked to slay Draconics, calling them monsters, and other times, they would see them nearly as a god. In truth, they were the ultimate companion, capable of bonding with someone in a way that is stronger than any love. The Draconics knew that if they were to stand a chance in this changing world, they would have to sway those who had forgotten in a more peaceful direction.
The magical creatures, the monsters of the deep, also noticed the stirring of the world, and began to come out of their own lairs. Indeed, it was time for all things to awaken - and the world could live again!
Rolling hills riddled with caves; fields bountiful with wheat, grains, and flowers; majestic forests with trees rising to nearly touch the sky; mountains sturdy, reaching even higher; deserts, parched and perilous; seas and oceans, hiding the greatest treasures of the world; jungles, beautiful and dangerous; frozen wastelands; volcanic hells; cloud palaces hidden from the eye; catacombs within canyons; rivers stretching out like fingers across the lands; and marshes and bayous to stop them! The world is indeed vast.
Technology exists, but is not dominant in this world. Magic is a lost art, and monsters are starting to stir. Cities are quaint, and have a small homey to them. The places growing the most quickly are those places surrounding those the center-points of the world (as we know it): the Labs, and the Canyon of Eterra.
All species seem to be welcomed at those palaces - by a rule of thumb, the leaders refuse to allow prejudice - and creatures of all shapes and sizes are given out for free. The cities grow around them like wildflowers blooming in the spring.
Indeed the world has changed, and life seems to be at peace again, save for the quiet struggles of the wilds. One might pray that the gods do not awaken to see how their world has turned, or pray that they do, and bring fortune and change.
Perhaps your character is one of those who had lived in a peaceful (or not so peaceful) town or city, just outlying one of those areas? Maybe they traveled a long distance? Most likely, all characters, regardless of their particular storyline, have migrated to one of the aforementioned ‘hotspots’ for life, which is where all of the action on site happens.
