There were times that Jack hated coming to the mines, but this wasn't going to be one of them, not if she could help it. She grinned a little and looked around at the melting snow around the mines and wondered what it would be like if it could actually snow IN the mines. Of course that couldn't happen unless magic happened, but still, it was an interesting thing to wonder about at this point. Jack smiled a little and put a hand on Grim's back, her new mining familiar she was trying to acclimate to herself at the moment. Sure, he seemed to trust her like his father did, well, not many animals trusted her like Goran did, but that wasn't the point. The point was, he was getting there and she was more than excited about it at the moment. She grinned a little bit, what was she going to do about things anyway?

Maybe it was for the best she was trying to acclimate a new familiar, she couldn't have Goran with her all the time after all. Still smiling, she motioned for Grim to follow her as she started to pull the cart into the mine. This place was so familiar she could walk it in the dark. Of course that wasn't ideal or anything, but that was fine she figured at the moment. Pushing a gloved hand through her short hair, she wondered what they were going to find on this excursion. Of course there would be gems, or at least she hoped that much, but then there were always animals to come across. While she felt bad for sending some of the familiars with Gig to get them broken apart, no one wanted familiars from the mines anymore unless they were gargoyles, and so she felt they were better used if they were broken down into gems so she could work with them when the Workshop opened back up again.

The Workshop had been closed for awhile and seemed like it was going to be closed indefinitely. That was a bad thing for her, she couldn't make new orders or anything, and she had made it a habit to walk by the building once a day to see if it had opened again. So far no luck, but she was sure it would happen sooner or later! Hopefully sooner and not later, but, well, she couldn't really affect it in that way. Jack shrugged to herself and put her free hand on Grim when he trotted up next to her, keeping his nose to the ground to see if he could smell anything along the path they were walking. She really doubted they were going to find anything here, seeing as how it was the entrance to the mines, but something could have been overlooked. It would be more surprising to find an animal around here, she supposed with a little smile.

Well as long as they found something she would be happy, and so would Grim, she imagined. Giving herself a chuckle, she patted the halfbreed on his back and then smacked him on the haunch a little to let him know he could go ahead and she would catch up with him eventually. He rushed off down the path, much to her amusement, and then she shook her head a little bit. Of course she could always see his glow down in the shaft, which was a good thing when it came down to it, and she hoped he wouldn't get too far ahead of things just yet so she couldn't see him. That was the problem with some things sometimes, and she wondered what she would do without a familiar in the mines. Of course she had two more halfbreeds in reserve, one she had gone in on with some others, and another she had bought from someone else when she realized just how amazing the cross had come out.

Well she just had to keep going no matter what, she figured as she delved deeper into the mines, following the glow from Grim's body as she went along, the cart bumping along the path behind her. At least some of this had been carved out, but the deeper you went, the more unruly it became. She smiled a little bit and then shook her head, she didn't know what she was going to expect to find, but at least she knew she was supposed to find something. Jack stretched out her shoulders as she moved along and wondered what Grim was off doing. Of course she was going to wonder though, but soon she found out when he came trotting back to her with something in his mouth. It looked like part of a nest, was something around here or had they already moved out of the nest? Instantly she was wary, nests meant animals were around, and with Sarane in the mines, well...

It seems that the little nest had something in it; after the first glance two small stones fall out. Maybe it was an old, abandoned familiar nest?

She always seemed to go into hiding in the winter, she supposed as she leaned on her walking stick, staring deep into the mines. It was warming up outside, being April, and she thought the best idea was to try mining first. She had to get the crystals for more nodes after all! Jack smiled a crooked smile and put on hand on the back of the beast with her, a halfbreed from Goran and a Rakai-Sarane who had been accompanying her on her trips lately. It was interesting to see that she was fond of this one as well, almost as much as Goran, and wondered if it was because Grim was his son. Whatever the reason, it was going to be interesting to see if things worked out, it would be nice to get a few fire crystals before anything else, but with her luck... A glance down at her bad leg made her sigh, it didn't matter, she would find things eventually.

Grim sniffed at the ground and his bright eyes stared down into the mines. There was a pull from there, from his gargoyle parent, and he knew that was where he belonged, even if he glowed like his father did. He glanced over at the woman and the noise of rocks clacking together came from his throat, making her chuckle in return. With a nod and a firm grip on the wagon behind her, they plunged into the darkness together, side by side. Her tools were in the wagon, with the torch hanging off the side, not that she really needed it with the glowing halfbreed. His bright purple glow emanated from almost everywhere on him, unlike his father who only had only a few glowing spots, but it made for an interesting trip at least, and she knew it was going to be a matter of time before he finally started getting the good stuff for her like Goran did.

As long as they could find something, she would call it a good day. She really hoped it was going to go well and they would find some crystals, but she really didn't know. It didn't matter at the moment, she was still getting the rust and cobwebs off of herself from winter, so it was going to be interesting at least. Who knows, maybe she would get hurt, but she could just port out of the mines thanks to her port stone. Grim didn't have one, but he could handle himself for awhile, and the cart could get retrieved later. Honestly she could probably ask Renathan to get her stuff for her, but she wasn't going to worry about it for the moment. If she needed to she could ask for a favor, but nothing was going to be like that. Where were they going to be digging today anyway? She would take her cues from the halfbreed, he had the mines in his blood.

Grim sniffed along the ground, pausing every now and then to work at the wall or the floor of the mines before snorting and moving on. Everything near the front had been nearly picked clean, there were a few pockets every now and then that held a few, but nothing worth their time. He knew the woman was looking for the more spectacular things, and he would do what he needed to help her find them. His father had taught him well, he was immensely loyal to the woman, and had passed his ethics on to his son for further help. It was going to be interesting to see what they could find, he figured with a tilt of his head when he finally reached a spot that seemed a bit good for them he figured. Jack smiled a bit and wondered what he was going to find for her first, but she wasn't going to let him dig alone, no, she was going to help him out, it was only fair and what she did as well.

Jack opened the door to the wagon, put the walking stick next to the door, and then pulled a shovel out of the wagon to start digging along with the halfbreed. She was sure they would find something, she just didn't know what it was going to be when it all came down to it. Stones or crystals, honestly she was happy with most things anymore, just not plain rocks. She also didn't want to find any more animals, she figured, there just wasn't any money in them unless she broke them down and made them into jewelry, but the Workshop was closed and had been for over a year now, and she didn't think they were going to open anytime soon. Jack pushed a hand through her hair and then dug into the ground next to Grim with a smile on her face. She loved to work and so did her halfbreed, it seemed.

A nice blue gem laid still, ripe for the taking in the ground, glistening like the deep ocean. But where? [6-10]

Jack dug next to the halfbreed for a bit, pausing every now and then to take a little drink out of her water flask. She had a nice big jug she carried with her in the wagon, but she carried a flask on her whenever she went so she wouldn't have to worry about it when she was working. Grim was next to her digging away, pausing to sniff occasionally when he thought he was going to find something. It took a little bit of work, but finally a blue stone showed through the dark dirt of the mines, glinting a dark, ocean-like blue. Jack chuckled when Grim sniffed at it and then started digging it out, flipping it over at her and then continued digging. She picked it up and brushed it off with a smile, a sodalite, she had many of those already, but it was the first of many finds right now and she was sure she was going to find many more things with the help of her halfbreed.

Ah well, not really something she wanted but at least it was something. She was sure Grim would find more for her soon enough, and she just hoped it would be sooner rather than later. Her shovel dug into the dirt again, sifting through a sizeable chunk of dirt before pausing and leaning on the shovel to watch her halfbreed get to work. It was great, she didn't know what else to do as chunks of dirt and rock flew behind him as he dug. It was fun to watch animals dig who really knew their way around, and boy did Grim know his way around, thanks to his father. She smiled a little as she thought of Goran, but he knew way too much and honestly needed a break at this point, so she had decided to work with Grim for a bit. Maybe she would train Goran up soon or something, it only made sense.
