Leafy’s blood turned to ice as she heard screaming from behind one of the walls. If there was ever a clue, that would certainly be it. She curled her hands reassuringly against the baby Izer. She was granted a muffled squawk in return. As long as Ranger was okay, she could deal with whatever that scream was. She steeled herself, trying to keep a brave face on. Being nervous and panicky wouldn’t serve her well, even if that was how she truly felt. She needed to find a door if she wanted to find the scream. Even if the scream had emitted from somewhere inaccessible, it would be up to her to find out how to access that area. She scanned for the door and noticed that it was located on the opposite wall. She stepped closer and yanked it open, bracing for something to jump out at her. When it remained quiet, she entered through the door.

She found herself in a hallway with walls that felt restricting as they remained close together. She kept her fingers curled gently around Ranger as he rested in her pocket. The Izer squirmed against her hand and let out a squawk. Leafy felt herself relax at the noise. As long as he remained lively, it was a good sign that he would remain in good enough health. Pestilence Izers were naturally sickly, so his sickness wasn’t unique in that sense. However, it still posed a risk to his life.
“Now how do we investigate that scream without putting ourselves in danger?” she asked the tiny Izer.
The Izer squawked at the sound of her voice, but otherwise offered no opinion. Leafy couldn’t exactly expect an Izer to do much for her. Especially not a baby one. This mansion exploration would be planned out purely by her own intellect. She had nobody to fall back on.

She needed to use stealth and caution if she wanted to investigate the area where the scream had come from. She narrowed her eyes, wishing suddenly she had something that could help her see in the dark. However, she hadn’t thought to bring her flashlight with her. She kept Ranger in her pocket, not wanting to risk him getting harmed out in the open. If they entered a safe room, she would pull him out again. For now, he would stay safe in her pocket, giving an occasional squawk to remind her of his presence.
“Now I just need to follow this hallway down until I reach the area behind the wall from the previous room,” Leafy planned out loud.
She felt determination settle into her chest. She didn’t feel as confident as she should. She was more worried about taking Ranger along than anything else. She needed to keep him safe no matter what.

She felt on edge as she followed the length of the hallway. Ranger shifted in her pocket, feeling her uneasiness as her muscles tensed. Leafy forced herself to relax and softly pet the hatchling Izer with her fingertips. She didn’t want him to become too stressed out after all. She stepped lightly as she walked, making sure that her footsteps didn’t echo down the hallway. Tiny sparkles of light suddenly exploded in the hallway. It was evidently more fireworks and Leafy was glad that they didn’t make a loud noise when they exploded. They were much too tiny for that.
“We’re getting a lot closer to where the scream came from now. Don’t worry though, I’ll make sure you stay out of danger,” Leafy told the little hatchling.
She was grateful that she had gotten him from the Hunter’s Lodge. He had been rather expensive, but if he survived to adulthood, it would definitely be worth it.

Leafy hadn’t been quite sure what to expect when she reached the area where the scream had come from. Admittedly, she expected something far less mundane than what she found. She subconsciously curled her fingers slightly tighter around Ranger, though she was careful not to accidentally squeeze too tight. Ranger let out a squawk and Leafy felt herself relax at the sound. It appeared that he was alright for now. She took the opportunity to examine the area closely. There were no signs of immediate danger, which might not be exciting, but it ensured her safety. She found herself at a junction with a choice of three doors. She wouldn’t be able to tell which door the scream had come from and for now, she hadn’t heard any additional noises. Each door was painted a different, bright colour. There were no scratch marks or blood splatter that would indicate the presence of danger.

As Leafy was busy deciding which door she should choose, Ranger poked his head out of her pocket. The sudden movement alarmed Leafy and she was quick to make sure the Izer was secure against the side of her hand. The Izer appeared to be distracted by two insects floating around the surface of one of the doors.
“I suppose you want to get closer to that one,” she whispered to the hatchling.
She got closer to the insects, capturing them quickly and placing them in the safety of her backpack. Ranger watched them intently until the were tucked safely away. Collecting insects might have been strange to other people, but Leafy was perfectly used to it by now. She didn’t have any particular attachment to bugs, but she wasn’t afraid of them or anything silly like that. She decided that the door the insects were hanging outside of would be the correct one to choose.

She placed her hand tentatively on the door. She didn’t want to open it too quickly. After all, there was no telling what might be hiding behind it. She made sure Ranger was held back within her fingertips. Her hand worked almost like a harness, keeping the Izer held securely in the front pocket of her hoodie. She braced herself as she tugged the door open.
“Well we’re not dead yet,” she remarked as she stepped into the new room.
She remained on guard as she surveyed the room. The ceiling was located high above her head which allowed her some breathing room. The room was bright with sunshine and the heavy scent of barbecue was present in the air. Ranger squirmed to get a better look at his surroundings. Leafy took that to be a good sign. His illness still worried her, but he was getting stronger with every passing minute.

“It’s time to look for clues!” she declared with narrowed eyes.
Leafy did not have all that much experience investigating, but she hoped to change that. When the room proved to be safe enough, she lifted Ranger up from her pocket so he could get a better look around.
“Can you see any clues?” she asked the Izer.
Ranger squawked in response, but his observations were unhelpful. Leafy decided she needed to look for clues on her own. She pushed the smell of barbecue from her mind and tried to focus on finding any other strange scents in the room. There was no tang of blood, but the scent of food could be masking it. Of course, a missing person’s case didn’t necessarily mean the person was harmed. The girl might simply be lost and needed some guidance to escape the mansion. This was certainly an easy place to get lost.

Leafy scanned the room, looking for anything that might appear out of place in the mansion. She felt like she knew the mansion rather well at this point and she felt confident in her ability to pinpoint anything unusual. There was a stack of newspapers someone had tossed on the ground. It looked like a good place to start her investigation. She lifted Ranger up as she walked, allowing the Izer to have a clear view of the area around them. When he was old enough, he’d be able to fly. But right now, he was much too small and sickly to do such a task. His wings weren’t fully developed and they looked more like stubs than anything else.
“These look recent,” she remarked as she read the date on the closest newspaper.
It was dated a mere week ago. The front page article was headlined as Have your creatures gone out of control?

The article sounded exaggerated, but headlines tended to be like that. She scanned the article, searching it for any useful information. From what she gathered, there were incidents of people losing control of their pets. It was likely a combination of poor training and inexperienced owners, but there was always a chance of something greater at work.
“Well I’m certain all of the pets mentioned in this article are nothing like you,” she teased Ranger.
The little Izer squirmed against her and Leafy found herself comforted by the action. She was growing attached to the creature even though she’d only owned him for a short while. She placed the newspaper down next to the stack of the others and grabbed the next one. She didn’t bother reading the rest of it. She already had enough things to read. Besides, the front page always had the most interesting articles. It was how the newspaper sellers made money!

At the very bottom of the stack of newspapers; one seemed to have moving ink! It showed a very scared little girl, hiding at the bottom of a bookcase. Suddenly, she looks even more frightened, and gets up before bolting out of the confines image where she could not be seen anymore! Where did she go now?

September Autumn had arrived quickly to the labs. The leaves were already changing into the brilliant shades of colour and plummeting to the ground as the wind touched the trees. Lotus was bright-eyed and happy to leave the comfort of her kennel. The halfbreed was a fairly recent addition to her hoard and it was always nice to spend time getting to know a new pet. The mansion encouraged exploration and it would allow them to experience some easy bonding. “Do you want to try exploring inside the mansion?” Leafy questioned her pet. There was also a garden around the mansion that they could try, but the air was growing chilly and the girl was hoping that her companion would be content with heading indoors. Leafy tried her best not to mind the cold, but it was that strange time at the start of a new season where the weather hadn’t entirely settled. (Lotus 0 1/5, 3 1/5) 1

She felt a strange sense of serenity as she approached the mansion with Lotus in tow. The halfbreed’s good mood was infectious and she was looking forward to exploring the rooms with such lively energy. The front door was easy enough to push open. The atmosphere this month was a lot friendlier than a lot of the other months. From experience, Leafy knew that next month was one to be wary of.
“Come on Lotus, let’s check out the inside!” she informed her pet.
Lotus wagged her tail at the sound of the girl’s voice. If the halfbreed was anything like a Vulticus, she would be able to learn some human words with time. She would never be capable of truly understanding language, but commands would come natural to her. She had never owned a dog before, but she assumed that it was a similar concept to that. Not many people had dogs anymore.

The door creaked as she opened it. Leafy didn’t let it shake her good mood even though the sound was ominous. The inside was a nice relief from the chill outdoors. It was still the morning and with the sun, hopefully the air would warm outside by early afternoon. The room had a strange orange glow to it. Almost as though it was lit by a campfire. Try as she might though, she couldn’t see the source anywhere. Lotus trotted across the room. Her nose was held high was she took in all the different scents. The room itself was sizable and Leafy thought she would have been able to fit an Equillion in here if she wanted to. The ceiling stretched up and was covered in strange, green vines. They twined across the walls, twisting together and forming strange patterns. They didn’t grow any vegetables, which she thought was rather unusual.
