The first thing that Renathan notices when he comes back to is that he has nearly tripped over Sarabi's tail. He quickly stops the cart and then breathes out a quick shocked noise as he catches himself before he hits the ground. Sarabi was looking at him incredulously and Renathan sheepishly showed his teeth beneath the mask, though she could not see it. He felt a little bad about it, but she didn't seem to be hurt or anything. Renathan shook his head and then got himself the rest of the way up, before looking around, trying to figure out what had made Sarabi stop. He saw it, even with his own humanoid lack of mining senses that Sarabi undoubtedly have; there was a bit of metal hanging out of the wall not too far away. Wow; he wasn't quite used to managing any metal! It was a thousand wonders. "Wow, good job, Sarabi!" He meant it, too.

Renathan had tons of things to do today, but the idea of getting more minerals and metals was overwhelming for him. He wanted to get as much as possible; mostly because he really wanted to buy more land to put more creatures into his home. His farm was just shy of large enough to have all of his creatures living with him, and it was quite miserable. He desired quite a bit to sell some of his creatures too, but he didn't want to have to drag them to the Zoological Imports, that would be a mess he felt. He didn't like to aggravate the purveyor there, who never seemed happy about having critters dumped on him for pay, even though he always took them. Renathan made his way over to the metal lump and scratched at it, wondering which kind it was. It was a strange color, so he was sure that it wasn't silver or zinc.

Renathan would have to look at the metal more after he had excised it from the wall of stone before him. Renathan went to grasp a pickaxe from his things to begin this process, and as he did so, noticed that Sarabi wasn't even paying attention to the metal, instead she was digging in the wall on the other side of the room; as if the thing she had stopped for was indeed there instead! Renathan wondered what could be interesting to her more so than this strange metal that he couldn't immediately figure out, but he had work to do over here, and had to turn to do that instead. He began using the pickaxe as he generally would to crack at the rocks around the metal, making sure not to strike the metal since that might could break his pickaxe, that wouldn't be good! Renathan had been doing this for quite a while, so he knew what to do.

Sarabi was even more good at this than he was, he could already hear her behind him, digging into her wall with practiced precision. He'd never trained her, not a once, she had been doing this since he met her. He really didn't think that training her like he would other creatures to dig and search for things would make her any better, so he hadn't insulted her intelligence like that. Perhaps someday he would do so, but he doubted it. It wasn't on his to do list, that was for sure. However, he really needed to get this metal out, and to do that he'd have to stop paying as much attention to her. Of course, he'd done this so many times before that his practiced strikes hardly required any real thought, just enough to make sure that he was chipping away at rock and not indeed at the metal itself.

It didn't take too long for Renathan to accidentally knock the metal out of the stone wall; he hadn't thought that it was going to be this size of a chunk; or this shape rather. They were generally this size, but this one felt smaller due to being vaguely spherical. Good enough for a single ingot of whatever this was, he knew. Renathan put the pickaxe down and leaned it against the mining cart so that he could work with the metal. He reached out and grasped it after bending down after it, and picked up the rock-covered metal. He held it up to the light carefully in an attempt to make out the colors. It was somewhat dark, and very intricate when it came to the light play across it. Yes, this was not iron, zinc, or even silver. It was way too dark for that, but it wasn't red either... "Hey Sarabi, what do you think about this?"

Renathan was generally pretty proud when he got metals, because they were pretty abnormal and usually Renathan had to trade to get any of them, usually at the Underground. Renathan hoped one of these days, that he would have what he considered 'enough' to go trade for some credits, or perhaps weapons. He stood there for just a second, feeling a little 'out of it', and then he realized that he had just thought about this earlier! Renathan shook his head, and noticed that Sarabi was still digging into the wall on her side. "Did you find something, Sarabi?" Renathan asked, curiously. He put the metal piece that he had gotten down into the mining cart for safekeeping, and then walked over to her to take a look at the wall that she was digging into. It didn't look different really than his side, the wall he'd just pulled this one out of.

How are you supposed to mine with all of these rocks in the way?

Renathan hadn't done a whole lot of mining recently, if only because he was doing so much work all the time, but he felt, as he held that stone in his hand, that he should probably check out the area that Sarabi had uncovered. He pocketed the gemstone, and then put the pickaxe and shovel nearby, before stepping into the hole that she had produced. What was that? Another... Geode? Aww, Come on Sarabi. Renathan thought, she had been really fascinated with those useless things as of lately. It was a real mess, but he figured that at least, they might make good trading fodder. Sarabi always lost interest in these things once they got home, so maybe he'd find something to do with them after she stopped being so fascinated with them. He just hoped he could maybe find things that weren't geodes now? Renathan chuckled, and then went to go collect his pickaxe again.

As Renathan turned around to go and get his pickaxe, a bit of a shiver went down his spine. It wasn't that it was cold down here, in fact it was much warmer underground right now due to insulation of the earth than it was in the new winter outside. However, there was something a bit chilling in the air, and Renathan was not sure what it was. Perhaps it was a strange wind coming from somewhere? These weird mines tended to have lots of little openings to the above ground, and that actually made them more dangerous than one would think. The wind from the above ground could actually push dangerous gases that would otherwise be trapped onto unsuspecting miners whenever it changed, and that was dangerous. A lot of folks also didn't completely consider these things before going underground. However, Sarabi had not warned him, and that was something she definitely would have done?

Renathan took a moment to consider whether or not what he was feeling was a crystal. It wasn't the normal feeling that crystals gave, but then again, he didn't even know what all kinds of crystals were out there! This cold be some kind of... Cold crystal or something. Then again, most crystals gave Renathan a kind of weird twinge of a proto-headache or something, and that wasn't something that Renathan was feeling right now. After a moment's thought, Renathan decided that no, this definitely was not a crystal. But what was it? It didn't really feel like the regular 'danger' feeling that he got sometimes that made him move out of the way. So what was it? Renathan looked over towards Sarabi and tried to figure out if she was feeling it too, and instead she was just chewing on the geode, so much that it was now covered in spit. Gross!

Well, at least Sarabi was enjoying herself. Renathan had no idea how much longer they would keep mining. He was having a kind of bad time today, if the strange feeling was anything to go by, they probably wouldn't find anything really nice this trip. Of course, Renathan really wasn't sure what he was after, but he felt like it was important to find... Something. What was it? Renathan thought for a moment, turning away from the happy, slobbering Sarabi (that definitely was not something he had seen before, but then again she had found about a billion and one geodes!) and tried to figure out what was bothering him so badly. Hopefully he would figure it out soon enough? He'd been traveling underground with Sarabi for a long time, so if it was something bad he knew that she would help him out. She always did, and he was very trusting with her.

Maybe the dark gleaming vein of metal would catch either of their attentions soon.

Mining sessions were not the most common thing for Renathan anymore. He was just too busy, too much going on to really have time to do the hobby that he once spent tons of time doing. However, he was standing at the mouth of one of the caverns now. Sarabi was standing behind him, looking much more excited to get down into the mines than Renathan was. The mammalian was dragging his mining cart with all of the equipment in it, as he always did, but he noticed that it felt lighter than it previously had. Renathan turned around to check down into it to make sure that the equipment he would need from the trip were there. He didn't find anything missing, and Sarabi was already giving him the stink-eye. Looked like they needed to go into the cavern.
It was one of the simpler caverns that the russet mammalian had picked, this time.

This cavern was a little smaller than the original donut-shaped cavern that Renathan preferred so long ago. There was so much time in the past that Renathan had spent in that little cavern, but the rains had made it, and the rains took it away. It was one of those little holes in the ground that funneled rushing rainwater down into the earth, and it caused a nice little swirl pattern that caused all sorts of gems to erode from the rock. However, the rains had washed it completely out recently, as Renathan had scouted down to check, so it was no longer an option when it came to mining. Such a shame. With Sarabi here though, he was sure to find at least something on the short trip he had planned today. He didn't like to make short little trips like this, but sometimes he just had to, it was all he could do.
