"It's tough, but you just have to be extra careful. It's really weird when they kind of surround you though..." Jack trailed off, a shiver running down her spine. She wasn't necessarily scared of them, but that did make her nervous when there was a head on each side of her, staring at her hungrily. "Well you're free to come look anytime you want. Are you going to get anything today or just price check?" Jack asked, tilting her head. She was starting to get a little hungry but that was fine, she didn't know if Renathan wanted to go to any other shops either, so it would be good to know that before deciding to head home and get the food cooked before the picnic.
The little amulet spirit circled around Lazare's neck if he allowed it, though it was rather hard to fight against mist after all, and then settled down in a kind of necklace around his neck. She seemed to approve of him rather well if she settled down like that on him, usually she didn't do that kind of thing, and it surprised the woman as she watched. "They could be, actually. I know that mix had been bred before Ember was born. She's tan with green wings. A lot like her mother, actually, only her body is like her father it seems," she told him, tilting her head as she looked at the Pachee in the shop waiting to be bought.

Renathan shuddered; he'd never really had to deal with that kind of thing before, and it sounded a bit scary. "I don't know how you do it. You just have a way with creatures." He said, smiling again. That was such a great personality trait to have, at least around these parts! The Labs had been a scary prospect for him at first; a place that just gave out creatures willy-nilly? He was almost surprised when it turned out to be true. "Just a price check I think today, but I'll definitely be coming back." He nodded at that. He was happy to have been shown this place, after all!
Lazare didn't seem bothered of course, though it did seem confused for a moment before accepting it. Just how long of memories did an orbaru even have before moving on to something else? Lazare was very easily distracted. Renathan, on the other hand, was nodding at Jack's word. "Ah, that makes a lot of sense! Mintaka doesn't remember his family, he was a rookery baby from what I have been told." He smiled at that. "Ember sounds like an interesting person." He looked at the pachee as well, and was a bit surprised not to see any stripes on them; just the mottled markings. Was that normal for a pachee?

"I've just been here so long it's almost second nature to me at this point," Jack admitted, knowing the time she had spent at the Labs was to blame for her way with animals. She gave a chuckle, she wouldn't change it for the world she thought. Giving him a nod, she motioned toward the door a little, "Well if you're ready we could head out and get dinner going? Stop by your house to grab the vegetables and things on the way to mine to cook the steaks, what do you say?"
Scorch probably wouldn't have reacted at all if Lazare had batted at her or anything, she was pretty nonchalant about things it seemed. Most things didn't bother her, she just went along with the ride, she would have just stayed put around his neck until he got too antsy, then she would have moved over to the woman, if only to get some more sleep during the time they were out. Jack glanced down at her, "I might drop her off at the house too, she looks too tired to be out and about..." Shaking her head a little, she moved toward the door if Renathan was ready and then nodded happily, "She's really kind, but Mintaka sounds amazing too, I'd love to meet him someday!"

Renathan nodded, and wondered silently what it had been like for her whenever she had first made it to the Labs. Or did she live here? How long had the Labs been around, anyway? "How long have you been around the Labs?" He finally was able to ask, a bit too nervous at first. He was glad, himself, that he had come here of course, but he wondered how many people were around now. "Sounds great to me, we'll also need to stop by your place so that you can put the plush and the other stuff away." He'd nearly forgotten about that; he was surprised that no one really seemed to pay it any mind. It was life-size, so it could easily be mistaken for a real orbaru, save for it didn't move. He held open the door, just barely since his arms were full of orbaru.
Lazare finished his cupcake after seemingly remembering that it was there, getting icing and such all over his fur. Was it even good for an orbaru to eat a cupcake? How many of those did he make a day? It was pretty weird. Renathan had thought about all of those things before but it didn't seem to cause any issues, at least. Perhaps it was because orbaru ate a rather sugary diet anyway. "She does look tired." Renathan cooed, looking down at her. "Must not be used to the world of the physical much." He'd gathered that from their conversation before, at least. "Definitely, someday you'll have to show me how to fish, and I'm sure Mintaka would love to come along- he's polite too."

Oh wow, what a question, she'd lost track, honestly. "Umm... about 10 years or so I think now. That's when I got hurt, I was crushed by a wagon that turned over and messed up my leg. It had healed a bit when the healer's got to me, so that's why it was so messed up until, well..." she trailed off, not wanting to say the words that had given her nightmares since the accident. What if it had hit Renathan or Auburn? Hitting her, not so big of a deal, she had actually done better since then, but one of them? No way. She shook her head a little to get rid of the intrusive thoughts and then focused on his next statement, "Yes, that's entirely true, I'd almost forgotten!" Jack managed a laugh as she looked down at the plush and the bag of goodies from the fishing shop in her hands. How could she forget those?
"She's certainly not out as much as I wish she was, that much is true," Jack admitted, feeling a bit bad, but Scorch was the one who had the most experience, and magic, of all of her amulet spirits. She smiled a little and leaned into him a bit as they walked down the road to his home for the vegetables, "Of course I'd love to show you how to fish, and Mintaka is more than welcome to come along if he wants to!"

Renathan had heard this story before, but it still made him feel dizzy and horrible to know that this happened to her. Horrible things could happen at any time to anyone, but it sucked to know that this had happened to her. "Ten years, huh? That is a long time." He said, softly, not quite trying to focus on the bad but unable to really keep from feeling sad about it. She had so much go on in her life that was difficult. "I am glad you are here, Jack." He said, softly, looking at her and smiling sadly. He didn't want anything bad to happen to her, but he couldn't really protect her, either. She was her own person, and she just wouldn't be her without doing all of the things she did.
Renathan did chuckle at that though; he forgot things too, a lot.
The mammalian nodded at her, also understanding that quite well. "There are several creatures I need to get out with more often, as well." Renathan held and petted Lazare for a moment. "I need to train Lazare at some point, but I think I'll work on him later on. I have a lot of battle pets that need work first." That was certainly true! Renathan grins though, a real smile. "Mintaka would probably love to come, he enjoys the river a lot, we just never fished..."

"It's been a struggle a lot of the time, but it's been worth it in the end," Jack said a little somberly, knowing it was something she had thought a lot about. She'd thought about leaving a time or two, but never went through with it, she didn't trust her animals to anyone else it seemed. No one would probably have the room for her horde. "I'm glad you're here too, life wouldn't be the same without you," Jack told him with a little smile as she popped up on her toes as she walked and kissed his mask on the cheek. She chuckled a little, what some people might think if they saw them like this. She didn't know if it was strange or not, she just knew it felt good to be with him, and that was all she needed to know at this point. Jack pushed her hair back and then nodded toward her side, "This is near your place, right?"
Jack paused along the street for a moment or two to see his reaction before nodding, "It's important to get your battle animals ready, of course, but don't forget to have fun! It might be good to get his training done in spurts, little breaks between your fighters or something, get you to relax. It's not all work you know." She gave a little laugh, she could use her own advice it seemed, she worked hard and rarely had time to play, but this was one of those times and she was thrilled with it. Scorch lazily drifted back over to the woman and circled around her amulet before giving a little yawn and Jack seemed a little sympathetic toward her at the moment. "Great! It's a date then," she told him when it came to fishing, eyes sparkling and a playful smile on her face.

Renathan nodded, that was going to be a concept that Renathan was going to have to keep in mind really well and think about later. "You are really strong, Jack." He said, forcing out a smile beneath the mask in an attempt to make himself feel better. The mammalian blushed beneath the mask, and gently reached out to pat her on the shoulder and gently squeeze it affectionately. "Oh, yes, just down this way." Renathan had been paying more attention to Jack than to the area, not that it was hard to do! Renathan chuckled as they entered his yard, walking over the small ornate wooden bridge across the brook; Shy Guy was swimming beneath it, and arched his neck to look up at them. Over the bridge and a short walk through a flower garden and the house was right there. "I'll go grab the food really fast, do you need to use the restroom or need anything?" His twin tail swayed in the wind, held just slightly off of the ground.
The mammalian agreed with that, that was for sure! "Usually I switch between Shy Guy, Lisle, and Auburn to give me time to relax, but those three are nearing done, that's for sure." Well, somewhat nearing. Some of the things that were left for Lisle were going to need hard work. Renathan was excited about that; fishing was an odd concept, and he was a little less afraid of it now that he had been to Pethia and seen people eating fish. "You bet!" Lazare was already so excited to be home that he wriggled, trying to get down onto the ground until Renathan chuckled and put him down gently. "You are a mess, little Lazare."

A laugh escaped her for a moment, her, strong? "I'm not strong, I just try and deal with what life throws at me one day at a time. It's the only thing to do you know? You can't predict the future, and even if you could, would you want to? That would make life so... boring..." she said, sticking out her tongue a little at the end as a reaction to what she had thought of. Life being boring would be the worst, she wanted action and adventure, probably something from her Navy days, she hated not having something to do, maybe that's why she had such a big kennel. "Oh I'm good! We're headed to my house right after, right? I think I'll put Scorshasia back in her amulet though, poor thing is tired," Jack noted and tapped the amulet a couple of times. Scorch woke up, yawned, and misted back into her amulet where she belonged for awhile, at least until she was awake enough to enjoy the outside world again.
"At least you get some variety. I tend to train one animal exclusively and then move on after awhile. It seems like I don't have the attention span to train more than one at a time," Jack told him honestly as she followed him to the doorway of his house with a smile on her face. She turned and watched Shy Guy for a little bit as she listened to Renathan talk to Lazare and gave a little chuckle. Tonight was going to be a good night, the sun was already starting to go down, it wouldn't take too long to cook up the steaks and then they could head back to the gardens and watch the sky as the sun dipped under the horizon. She just hoped it would be a clear night to see the stars as well.

Renathan smiled wide and shook his head lightly. "If that isn't strong, I don't know what is." He really was amazed by how modest Jack was all the time! It was amazing to think about, really. "You are right about that though." He hadn't thought of it that way before either. Renathan smiled at her sticking out her tongue, it was so... cute! He stuck his tongue out right back. "Nothing worse than a boring life, right?" Renathan nodded to her at that. "Yes, right after, if that's fine with you!" Lazare was looking pretty tuckered out too, so he sat the creature down as soon as they got inside. Lazare knew this place well enough; he lived here after all! The creature took off running to the playroom. "There are a few things in life that I would have liked to have tackled better, but over all, I am happy with all the decisions that I got to make." He said, grinning beneath the mask.
Renathan smiled softly as he began to rummage through the fridge for food. "Any fruits or anything you want specifically?" He had so many things from his garden that it would make anyone's head spin. He moved over to the side so that she could pick, if she wanted. "That is an issue; I keep their training wrote down in lists and check things off as we work through them, but sometimes I even get confused!" It was certainly the truth. Renathan was excited about their date this evening, already it was going so well and he felt like he was getting to know her more. He just hoped it didn't start to rain out of the blue, or anything!

Jack chuckled a little at that and then shook her head as she pushed her hair back. "Nothing is worse than a boring life," she agreed with a smile at Renathan. "Anyone who says they have no regrets in their life is lying," the woman then said. Everyone had at least one regret, no matter how little it was. She herself had plenty of them so far, but it had led her here, to this point in time, so maybe it hadn't been quite as bad as it could have been. Sure, they were regrets, but she could see the good in them at the same time. There was just too much in life to worry about, too many things she could have done differently but didn't. But, as she had thought, they had all led her to this point in time. Not too bad, she figured.
Ooh, anything specific? Jack shook her head, "Nope, whatever you want to get is fine by me! I can eat anything from the gardens, after all." There was no particular favorite for her it seemed, as long as they were fresh she had no complaints, and she could cook just about everything that he could bring. "Lists certainly help, but they're easy to lose as well," came her addition to that statement, and she shook her head, it had happened to her before after all. Excited for the date as well, she was practically bouncing on her heels as she waited in the doorway, watching him gather what he wanted before they could head over to her house for the steaks. The sun was beginning to set and she had a gazebo she wanted to sit in to watch it.

Renathan nodded at that, smiling really softly beneath the mask. He knew, perhaps a little too well, about regrets, but he was sure that everyone in their own way did so as well. He thought about this sort of thing a lot when he was by himself, but he tried not to fret too much about others. He was just so used to caring about those around him that it was sometimes hard to deal with the culture differences. He was learning, however. "I am glad to be here, Jack. Thank you for, y'know, coming with me today and all." Was he... bashful? He tried to look aloof but it just wasn't cutting it well.
Renathan smiled beneath the mask, charmed by her willingness to try new things. "Gotcha, let me see..." He said, trailing off, and making a few selections. He figured that if he didn't wind up cooking all of it, that she could use it later for something else. Peppers were his favorite though, so he grabbed a few different kinds of those, of varying heat levels, and of course some fruits. He sacked them up in a nearby bag, it looked like he kept it around for such occasions. "Alrighty, is there anything else we need before we head over to your place?" His stomach was already grumbling, but he tried to look like he hadn't heard that. "You are totally right- Auburn knocked Shy Guy's off of my shelf the other day. It wound up under the bed, but I didn't know for a few days..." Auburn was a little mess sometimes. Undoubtedly she was enjoying her own freedom around the house for a bit, or maybe sleeping in her favorite perch.
He was ready to go if she was.

"Oh any time, it's been fun so far!" Jack said eagerly with a smile on her face. She didn't know what it would be like to have a life without knowing this man, and her smile softened a little as she thought about things. It was nice, and things were going to go well from now on, she had a feeling of it. Even if things happened, it would be good, right? She shook her head a little and gave a small, inaudible sigh, wondering what she was going to do with herself thinking strange thoughts such as the ones she was having now.
"I don't think so, let's go get the steaks!" she said happily and turned on her heel to leave as soon as Renathan got to the door. She was happy to leave and head to get more food, it was going to be great, even though the sun was already setting, she'd hoped to be in the garden by now, but the sky was turning a pretty pink, purple, and orange as the sun started to set, so it all worked out in the end. The sky was clear as well, the stars would be out in full force it seemed, especially out in the outskirts of the Labs itself, it was easier to see them out in the gardens. "Oh that's no good. I try to keep a board with training on it and then stick notes to it like that. You might try that sometime?" Jack offered as she walked, "You can check it out when we get to my house." At least it was only a street or two over, she figured as the corner came into view.

Renathan smiled deeply, one of those smiles that shows all the teeth, genuinely. He had been so nervous about today, but honestly it was going so great! He was so glad that today had went so well, he was afraid that he would mess it up somehow, after all. It was more a bubbly nervous, though, than a shaking nervous. He didn't feel the need to run and hide or anything, it was more of an excitement. He wondered about it, trying to put a finger on it, and he hadn't really understood it until now.
Renathan could have jumped for joy had he had a little less self control, and a little less garden-fare in his arms. He was happy to get food in his belly, and glad that it was going to be with Jack. He loved being around her, after all, and was feeling a bit better today than he had been. "That is actually the perfect idea! You are really clever, you know?" She was practically a genius; he really didn't think about things like she did. He was glad that she was that way, too, he really respected it. "Certainly, I'd love to see it." Walking out across the yard; leaving Lazare in the house since he wanted some real alone time with Jack. He was glad that her home was relatively close; he was really lucky that way, he thought. That distance had felt like a million miles during the winter, though.
He could hardly wait to get dinner going!

Jack laughed at him, throwing her head back a little and staring at the sky. "Not really clever, just adaptable, I guess," she said with a chuckle, smiling over at him as they walked. They had reached the gate to her farm and she opened it to let them both through before closing it again. She led the way up to the house and glanced over at Renathan, "You're not too bad yourself, you know..." A hint of a blush crept across her cheeks and she powered up the hill to the house and threw open the door. She was greeted by a few animals and gestured for Renathan to come in so she could start cooking the steaks. "How do you like your steaks cooked anyway?" Jack asked, unwrapping the gorgeous, thick steaks from the package they were in.
The woman rubbed her hands together before washing them and then seasoning the steaks with a few choice seasonings. She then made sure her stovetop grill was warm enough and slapped them both down. "My board is over there, I only have a few lists there for now," she said, leaning on the counter and pointing to a corkboard by the front door. A smile played across her lips for a moment and then she shook her head and reached for a little basket. "Here, you can put all those in here if you want, we can have them fresh. Oh! Let me get plates. And what do you want to drink? I have juice, you liked that last time didn't you? Or we could just do water..." she mused as the steaks sizzled on the grill. They would be done in no time, she just had to pay attention!
