The setting: A cleared out patch of gardening space, the dirt tamped down by foot and by spade for a flat and sturdy feeling space to walk upon. A few small cobblestones are implanted into the dirt to add texture, for when walking about (or to hear that wild baakir nearby clopping). Near the edge of the enclosure is a mid sized boulder, probably something the creator of this space could not move themselves without mechanical help or brute strength. Its tall enough with paw holds to work for sitting on, sunning upon, or to be up high as a vantage point.
A shred of parchment is attached to the boulder, written in the language of the desert.

It surprised the ssashirk that a change of season could inspire such change in mood for a creature. Spring time symbolized the renewal of life. Opinionatedly Flare's favorite season. The spring gave him all sorts of work to do inside his little patch of garden. It took longer with his leg in its condition. On one of his days off from gardening, the ssashirk tried to socialize with his pachee a bit further. Pak reacted to his name well enough. Even with the enunciation issue of 'the p sound'. Croc jaw be damned. Earlier in the month, Flare received a message from the human woman Jak. She headed a training guild, and there were open slots for membership. With some consideration, he decided to join. She'd helped him out previously with getting Pak to listen to him. Perhaps doing the guild stuff would be handy. One of the 'assignments' [didn't this feel like the academy] asked the members to practice basic obedience. Like what one would teach their puppy. Today, Flare had the idea to try and give Pak some lessons. He had a habit of smacking his tail about more often then not in this weather, with no females about. It made him sneeze. "Acha. Hapana." Flare told the pollen cat absently. He didn't react at all. Well of course not. Begin "Stop/No" 1 12.20

If there wasn't such a size difference between him and Pak, Flare would've tried to pin his tail down with his foot and tell him not to smack his tail around absently like this. However he wasn't sure if the segmented tail had bones in it or what not, didn't wish to break the pachee's tail. The breaking of a single leaf can leave a fresh wound that can eventually kill the plant after all. Though sometimes you can't stop a leaf breaking off the plant. Slap slap slap. there he went again. The pollen kicks up with audible warning, starting to tickle the much larger drake's nose. Shaking his head didn't stop the sneeze that rivaled a roar. The whole garden went still. Mid-slap, Pak stared at the giant. His maw made such a noise. {no. Stop Pak.} he told the pachee sniffly. Pointing at his own raised tail, and lowering it back to the ground. The pachee's short bristly fur stood out a bit from his initial scare. {No tail.} 4.20

If pachee had a mouth, Pak would've frowned. His head tilts to the side, watching the giant's own tail. He keeps forgetting the giant has a tail. It isn't segmented or leafy like his own beautiful tail. Watching the giant as he raises and slaps down his own tail, makes a loud noise again from the maw, and a softer, more stern noise as he lowers his tail back to the ground. Tail...something. Something to do with tails. His own tail lowers back to the ground as he watches, but not from getting it. The giant sees this though, and produces a fat blue berry with segments. He makes a content sound, and passes the berry over. Pak reaches out for his treat, not quite sure what he'd just done for it. Initially he slaps his tail down as he sits back down on his feet from reaching up. The same noises, and the giant repeats what he'd just done. {No Pak. No tail.} 6.20

If the pachee stops spreading his pollen outside of the center, it would in Flare's opinion, make his life a slight bit easier, and less sneezy. He repeats the motion of pantomiming a sneeze when slapping his tail, then lowering his tail down, with the specific words of {No tail}. Monkey see, monkey do, pachee see, pachee do, he hoped. There wasn't a guarantee of this. However, the pachee is looking between his tail, back to Flare, and repeating the motion. His tail finally sets down. {Good Pak.} Another berry he manages to bring out from someplace. He'd get the idea eventually, especially when just clawing open the berry's stretched out skin to stick his paws into the juicy pulp goodness. Ooooh, so good. When Pak finished both his berries, he sat there on his hind legs, cleaning his paws with his empty face. How... how did he do that? 8.20

This wouldn't be a simple day process. No way. Over the next few days, at least. Whenever he was in the garden, and Pak would start slapping his tail. the drake reinforced the {no tail} command, both with words and with mimicry. At least it distracted the pachee into lowering his tail back to the ground, and gettign a reward for it. But eventually his berry stash would run dry. The mimicry slowly fell off, and he only used {no tail} for telling him off the action. When the berries stopped coming, instead he offered the little fern cat a few face scritches. Those claws were good for something. {Good. Good no tail} he offered a few days later, as the tail rested back on the ground. Pak gave him a stare of 'where's my food' but took the scritches of goodness. The nail points were sharp, but they did reach a few spots under his chin where he'd picked off a few leaf mites previously. 10.20 lv 8/11 Pak

The pollen amount of when the males started slapping their tails about to get attention of the females seemed to be much lower over the next few days, as the drake could smell the incoming of autumn. The crisp cool air smell. He saw the pollen cat Pak prowling his territory, sometimes interacting with his offspring and the ones who were not his offspring. If another male started to slap his tail, the male got pounced, 'chee'd at. Was he trying to stop the others from doing the same? The pollen cat saw the giant watching, getting off one of the males. How interesting. He raised his own tail, heard the noises {no tail} that the drake made, and lowered it back down. All the offspring had the attention span of gnats on this. {Good no tail.} Perhaps he would teach his offspring to not slap their tails about so frequently. There were enough males after all, towards... were there two females? Who were very uninterested. 12.20

The weather started to cool overnight. A frigid wind to the desert born drake blew through the trees, shaking branches and scattering leaves. A storm might come soon. Flare didn't know what direction storms usually blew in for around here, there was nothing but sand or red mountain rocks in Tumai in all directions. Part of what he'd dragged back from the magic house turned out to be a rusty old rake. Rusted, but workable condition. Not to mention someone had sent him a whole batch of tools recently, marked with a splash of a red bird. But it came with a note that he had to ask for a translation. "Don't stop trying to train your pride. The leader likes you." The leader... did they mean Pak? He didn't... no, if he thought about it, the larger brown male seemed to act like a leader towards the males. Keeping them in line and such, like a Sargeant. If that the case, he would need to be the Sargeant for the pride. Isn't that right? How to get his attention then... 15.20 Watch me 1

It felt good that he'd managed to figure out to call Shabh to him, and get him to stay put. To not greet him in the fork of the limbs anymore. He just leaned against him now. They took a day off to let Shabh have some time of not being told what to do constantly. The rakai snoozed in the sun, his bone wings half fanned out over his scaled and fluffy body, rising and falling with each breath. Occasionally kicking out in his sleep, as if chasing something. The humanish tumaian let him rest, and took a walk around the city. Paying a visit out to the Cache. If there was a 'to go' menu to look at, he decided to take a look see. Shabh had moved his sleeping spot since he couldn't so well fit under Flare's barrel now, but he wanted to know if the barrel could be made for Shabh. 'For pets or for people'. But he had to be brought in and fitted, such as Flare had been himself when he was... cursed. But he would need to hold still while handled, and he had an idea for that. Had to sit still first. If Shabh were a smaller, younger beast, he might be able to do this kneeling down on his knees. But he was no longer. Granted, the rakai seemed to be of keen interest what he was doing now, or not. As he closed the gate behind him in the tamped down area where he chose to consider 'training', the latch makes a small sound. The snores pause, one red eye opens. As he rolls over into laying upwards, the rakai stretches out, giving a low pitched, wide yawn. His mouthful of sharp white teeth exposed briefly. As he gets up and shakes himself out, the humanish pulls a treat, a rather pungent smelling treat from his pocket. Oh? What's this? He wanders over to his master, smelling the hand. Its closed, like a fist. Carefully, Flare lifts the hand up past the rakai's muzzle, over his head. As his head heads upward, his rear end slowly goes down until the canid is sitting on his haunches. {Sit Shabh.} he says as the motion goes through. When the rakai finally sits down, he rewards him. {Very good sit Shabh. Good boy.} Sit 2 11.20

His tail kicks up dust on the ground as Shabh eats the treat with relish. He really likes the spiced smelling meat. Curiously, Flare picks a treat again from his pocket, having kept a small amount of the meat capsules in it, sniffing it. Popping one in his mouth experimentally to see if it was tasty. After the inital coating melts away, it tastes like the spiced meats from home. Its almost heartbreaking; homesickness in a single marble sized portion. He chews and swallows the treat, enjoying the taste long as he could. Brought from his reverie by a cold nose on his hand, he found Shabh investigating his pocket. {No... Sit Shabh.} He takes another treat from his pocket, and the rakai tries to snap it out of his hand. {No. Siiiit. Sit.} His hand goes upwards past the muzzle, and the rakai stands briefly up on his hind legs to catch the treat... but when nothing comes, he sits down on his haunches, and whines. At least he sat, and Flare rewards him for that. Sit 3 13.20

Shabh takes the treat, enjoying the attention and the pets that come along. His tail is scraping on the ground, wagging happily. He finished up the food, and finds that Flare is no longer paying attention to him. He's taking a look at the rock that is in the other side of the pen, but it has something... on the rock. It flaps and he has to pin it with one foreleg while looking at it. What is he doing? The rakai gets up and trots over. He's curious and leans into Flare as he examines the rock too. Sniffing at it. The humanish notices his presence and steps aside briefly. Shabh looks at the thing that his master had looked at, but... it makes nothing to him. A hand distracts him, and draws his attention back to Flare. He draws his hand back, and says to him {Sit Shabh. Sit...} The hand moves up past his muzzle, and the natural reaction of sitting happens. Shabh sits, but no treat comes from the hand that moved up? A beat happens, and then a treat comes form the other foreleg of his master. Yay! Sit 4 15.20

He’d ask Jak... no that didn’t sound right. The K sounded like a kuh. Jakuh? It probably had been written down someplace. This idea of teaching him, teaching Shabh to sit. It seemed effective to bring his hand up past the rakai’s snout and he’d do the naturalish? Motion of head up, butt down. He repeats the motion a few times whenever the rakai comes up to him. Motion of his hand up, and {Sit Shabh.} For the most part, Shabh follows the motion, but once or twice he tries to test his luck, rearing up briefly to try to find the treat he's positive he can smell. {No shabh. Sit.} Thankfully the smell of the spiced meats treat had rubbed off on his hand so he could swap treat lure from one hand to the other without trouble. As the rakai's haunches reached the ground, Flare did not produce a treat, but praised the animal with ear scratches and verbal praise. {Very good sit Shabh. Good boy.} Fwump fwump fwump, went his tail. He seemed to be making excellent progress in his education. After all, everything actually sits down in one way or another. Sit 5 17.20 26/34 Shabh

Another natural thing that animals seemed to do, if they were capable, included lying down. If he could manage to coax Shabh into lying down when asked, it would make having him handled and fitted much easier on the artificer. All for making it easier on him primarily. If he were younger, the rakai might've made a fine horse for a small child. But when he looked closely at the rakai's back as he sunned happily the next day, his light brown belly exposed to the sky, he left gouge marks in the ground when rolled on his back. The scales that spread from his head to his tail, the ones that were raised up, looked more like spines. Were they spines? The list he wrote down some months ago with the idea of teaching his pachee some things (where he had come up with this, he had no idea) seemed to be growing longer. Lay down 1 19.20

Aaah, he loved the sunshine. It felt so good on his belly fur. Shabh gave a little wiggle. Finally rolling over and sitting up into a nice deep stretch. With a big wide yawn, he shook himself and stood up. What a nice day. Loping over to where the little burble spring was, the rakai took deep several drinks from the cool water. It tasted really good. Better than the water he had to share as a puppy. His master... no, his alpha? Hard to think of his master as an alpha. Shabh had no experience with being in a pack. But he briefly thought about what packs would do. Packs listen to the alpha, and he listened to his master... so that made him alpha... right? Alpha had his food in a wooden bowl, chewed on a few times to make sure it was his, but hadn't set it down yet. He makes the alpha-bark to sit, and Shabh sits. But he doesn't put the bowl down? Instead he takes some of his food, and puts it in his odd paws and sticks the paw straight down beside his nose. Sniff sniff sniff, this isn't just his food... {Down Shabh.} Flare tells the rakai, a piece of his carnivore kibble and a treat palmed in the same hand. Straight down the hand has to go... and the rakai's head moves downwards just a bit, his paws following suit, but not fully. {Good down Shabh. Good boy.} The palm opens and the rakai eats his treat with relish. Lay down 2 1.20 lv up Flare lv 70!
