The next trick up on the list was teaching Kuras stay. This trick seemed simple enough to Leafy. Teaching Kuras no would help her here. It would help her keep him in place. She moved right in front of him to teach him this next trick.
“Kuras, stay!” she commanded as she held up one hand in a stop motion.
Kuras tilted his head, not understanding what the strange, new word meant. Leafy began to take steps back, moving further away from Kuras. The Vulticus moved to follow her.
“No! Stay!” she said.
Kuras froze, not understanding why he was being told no. He tilted his head to the side and let out a low whine. He almost took a step forward, but froze when he remembered that he’d been told no.
“Stay!” Leafy repeated the command.
Kuras fidgeted in place, not liking the trick that Leafy was teaching. After a few moments had gone past, Leafy tossed him a treat.
“Good boy!” she praised.

Kuras seemed confused, but he accepted the treat all the same. He ate it happily, his tail wagging behind him. Leafy grinned back at him, trying to convey that training wasn’t such a bad thing. When he was finished eating, they got back to work. Leafy looked around, searching for the ideal place to stand. When Kuras moved to follow her, she once again held up her hand and commanded him to stay. Kuras froze in place, still unsure what this strange new word meant. Leafy began to back away from him, moving slowly so it gave him a chance to react. When she had gotten a sizable distance away, Kuras made move to follow her.
“No! Stay!” she said sharply.
Kuras immediately froze and let out a low whine. There was that no word again. It was definitely a word that he didn’t like. Leafy continued moving backward and this time Kuras stayed in place.

Before she got too far away, she praised Kuras and tossed him another treat. The Vulticus was becoming less confused by the training and he relaxed when he realized he wasn’t being properly reprimanded. He wagged his tail as he gobbled down the treat. Then he sat back and watched her intently, waiting for the training to resume. Leafy thought for a moment, thinking up strategies for how she could continue training the trick. She figured increasing the distance between them by a lot would be a good thing to try. She held up her hand again, gesturing to Kuras to stay put.
“Kuras stay!” she commanded.
This time she didn’t even need to tell him no as she began to walk away. She turned her back to him, trying to make it look like she was ignoring him entirely. She continued walking, risking one glance over her shoulder to ensure he had stayed put.

When she saw that he was waiting patiently for her to release him from the command, she continued walking. She needed to test how far she could go and have him continue to follow the command. She searched for a good place to stop and realized there was tree that was a good distance away. She aimed to use that as a marker. She refused to look behind her as she reached the tree. Only when she was able to reach out and touch the tree did she turn and see where Kuras was. Kuras had managed to stay in place, but it seemed like he was bursting to race off towards her. Leafy watched him for a moment, waiting to see if he’d break himself free from the command or continue honoring it. When she deemed him ready, she raised her fingers and whistled, the signal she used for the command come. Kuras immediately raced towards her.

When he reached her, Leafy praised him with ears scratches and high-pitched words. She didn’t give him another treat so he didn’t become reliant on them. When she was finished, she glanced around for another way to teach the trick. She could try hiding herself from view, testing to see if Kuras would still listen to her after he could no longer see her. There were many trees close by she could use to try out his skills.
“Stay!” she commanded as she held up her hand in a stop sign motion.
Kuras froze in place. Leafy began to back away from him. There was a thick covering of trees to her left that she could hide behind. She headed towards them and disappeared behind one of the trunks. She stayed there for a good three minutes before poking her head out to check if Kuras was still in place.
“Good boy, Kuras!” she praised when she saw that he was.
The Vulticus raced over and thrust his head into her hands as he tried to force her to pet him. She complied with his request.
