The colors in the water seemed to swirl more violently the longer Jinx watched. She trembled, feeling that something was coming. Something big and perhaps powerful. She felt it rather than saw or heard anything, otherwise she wouldn't tremble! Or so she told herself. It was like her atoms were moving, not her emotions doing anything. Gulli snorted and backed away from the water, thinking maybe the water was starting to have an effect on her human. But the damage would have already been done since they both drank.
But no, there was something in there with them. Perhaps one of the Others that Jinx had been feeling. A dragon-like creature was emerging from the water, the colors swirling around it. Bruised purples and reds, lightening to orange the further toward the tail it went. Odd markings and swirls, adding to the dizzying feeling Jinx already had. Its eyes met hers and she froze. Friend? Foe? She couldn't tell, and it was just...standing there.

The dragon didn't move, but Jinx felt like she was being pulled away. Her vision darkened and she couldn't tell if it was just her, or if the creature affected the light around it, or... Her head was clouded, thoughts were hard. As if in a dream, thoughts were fleeting and memories were hard to grasp.
The creature was sending her into a nightmare.
She spiraled, vision going completely dark, until the vision manifested. It was dark, but also red, like the world was on fire at night. And it was - now she could hear the crackling sounds of fire as something burned. And she saw shapes of buildings, like homes. It looked like one of the villages she had taken refuge in while on the run. And she saw a large shape looming up over it - a dragon! A dragon had set fire to the village. People were screaming, people were burning. And the dragon, the same creature she'd just seen in the Mansion, was standing tall. She scooped Gulli up, ready to run.

Gulli squirmed in her arms, frightened at the vision, not sure what she was seeing. She knew enough that it was for Jinx, affecting Jinx, and probably meant something to Jinx, but the baby dragon didn't know what or why. She wanted to reassure her human, and also defend, but how could you defend against that? She made soft chirping sounds, trying to get Jinx's attention. It worked, though perhaps not the way intended- Jinx drew strength from being reminded she had someone to fight for, to defend. Jinx had been this close to turning and fleeing, to keep Gulli safe, but now she had the burning drive to fight the thing, to protect Gulli by defying the threat in front of her. She hesitated, thinking, then with a determined nod, she set Gulli down and stepped in front of her.
"Stay behind me!" She ordered. Gulli seemed to understand and ducked down.
Jinx faced the dragon and the flames licking a moonless sky. How dare this dragon burn the village down!

Jinx threw out her arms, both to appear bigger and stronger in the face of the enemy, and to provide more protection for her baby dragon behind her. She faced the burning dragon before her, her eyes narrowing in growing fury. She had spent so much of her life running away from things, running away from danger, that now she was done. She was fed up with constantly feeling trapped and scared. She was ready to face it or die trying!
"You!" She shouted at the dragon. "How dare you! Look what you've done!" She just got done shouting this and then charged at the dragon. She knew she was powerless like this in the real world, but something told her this wasn't quite the real world she left behind. In the ways of dreams, she was able to manifest weapons. In this case, she chose water, because her first thought was to save the lives that she could. In this nightmare turned dream, she summoned rains, torrential downpours that quickly quelled the fires.

Once the last fire went out, and Jinx had nearly reached the dragon, the dream shifted suddenly. Just like before, Jinx felt like she was being sucked away in a downward spiral, slamming back into her body by the water. The dragon, much smaller now in real life, stood before her, eyes blazing. But instead of the reckless mischief from before, it felt like the creature was regarding her with a sort of respect. Jinx stared back at it, holding its gaze - until it lowered its eyes. It felt like something snapped between them, and Jinx jerked her head back, startled. She stood, Gulli still at her side because the running had been a dream, and reached out a hand to the dragon. It watched her to see what else she would do, but this was the pose she chose and held. Waiting.
Eventually, the dragon approached slowly. When it was close enough, it glanced up at her, then down at the hand... and brought its muzzle into her palm, nuzzling it gently. Jinx felt like it respected her ability to climb out of its nightmare, to fight back instead of running like a coward.

The beast seems to be appeased and is thinking clearly once more. You have earned their respect and it will now go will you!  Though it seems to bring a little bit of memory with it, for safe keeping. |
