Morgan was quick to take the young but bright Shigeru to the docks, the next day after they had brought him to the mansion. He was clever, but growing pretty fast, and Morgan wanted to catch him up to the other tat-lungs as soon as possible. Seimei was already growing to the point that he should mature soon; and Ryuusei was right behind him. Shigeru's growth rate had been pretty quick too, so it was important to get those menial tasks taught to him while he was still a fish-like being. Morgan had perfected the smaller to medium creature transfer tanks by this point, so Shigeru would easily be transferred to the water of the loch in the small pool that was used for the smaller creatures like the baby tat-lung. "Shigeru. You're name is Shigeru." Morgan said. They were already feeling quite a bit better about naming sentient creatures, more like a parent and less like a slaver.
Morgan hated training the 'name' thing, and it was even worse teaching a sentient creature their name. It just seemed like a bit of an insult to a degree, even though Morgan did not mean it that way at all. It was absolutely required, though, that this be taught from a young age to a sentient creature, so that they could communicate to them a sense of self in conversation when Morgan began teaching that sort of thing. In many ways, this was the first step to really teaching a being communication skills. That was what Morgan tried to tell their-self as the continued the horrible grind of reiterating this to a creature that obviously understood the first time it was told something. "Shigeru. That's what it sounds like in Common." From the very moment that Morgan received Shigeru, they'd been communicating to him in triplicate to help get the ideas across verbally, in sign, and using the ring.
Morgan would have to continue, of course. Shigeru was looking up with bright green eyes (odd, most had golden eyes at this stage, right?) from the pool that Morgan had placed him within just earlier. "Names are important things. They help you understand who is being talked about. Communication is very important for information gathering." Ah, so that was the explanation, in common, LSL, and through the ring. Hopefully by the time he matured, the tat-lung would have a basic understanding of all three modes of communication. "Shigeru, your name means Luxuriant. I chose it because you are going to grow into a great mature dragon someday, I am sure of it. I have seen other tat-lungs before do so. You deserved a very regal name, Shigeru." The bespectacled human said, nodding gravely. In these moments, Morgan truly felt like a teacher, and it was.. Odd enough, to be sure.
Morgan didn't really feel cut out to be a teacher, but it was permissible to them to be working on teaching young tat-lungs. Not everyone in the labs treated their sentient creatures with dignity, and the bespectacled human would much rather be teaching the creatures theirself than someone be mistreating them. It wasn't hard for Morgan's mind to conjure up the nearly grown Seimei's back scarring at that thought, and it was awful to recall. At least Seimei was not going to have to deal with anything like that in his lifetime. "So, Shigeru, do you understand that?" Morgan asked, gently looking down at the creature. It blinked, and then conveyed a sort of positive, though he was still too young to really truly communicate properly like other tat-lungs. Maybe it would be a good idea for Morgan to put Shigeru together with the other tat-lungs, he would learn how to communicate easier?
"Good, I wouldn't expect any less from you." Morgan said, truthfully. It was difficult to maintain the status quo that the youngest of the tat-lungs would require to grow in confidence in a healthy way as he began to mature. "Let's practice. Give me an affirmative if that is your name, and give me a negative if what I say isn't. Common has some rather tricky sounds." That was the truth. Morgan spent the next ten minutes going over names, using Shigeru's in no particular pattern mixed in with the wrong words. True to form, Shigeru got it correct every time, even with his rather limited communicative skills. "Alright, you're doing good Shigeru. We need to move on to a few other things that you need to know now." Morgan conveyed in triplicate, feeling as if Shigeru got his name well enough at least that he should remember it, being sentient and all.
Morgan was going to move as quickly as Shigeru could take with this training. The bespectacled human hoped that it would indeed be relatively speedy, in fact as quick as possible. The next part was going to be the training to 'come' to Morgan when called. This would normally be a command, but Morgan hoped that it would be accepted by all of the tat-lungs living with them as more of a suggestion. With time, this would be headed out of friendliness and mutual respect; or at least that was what was desired. "Shigeru, I want to show you something." At this, the human pulled the whistle from their pocket. "This is a whistle. It is a signalling device for individuals that are far away. I will be using it to give you a signal for when I need you to come to me, if it is something you'd be willing to help me with in the future."
"Someday, you will become a great dragon. At that time, you will be able to fly far distances, but I'd really like you to stay closer to home. The world out there is dangerous and it will be much easier for you to get food if I feed you myself. In addition, the Labs controls the area around here, and doesn't take lightly to tat-lungs being on their own. Please stay close enough to hear the whistle call, okay?" Morgan said, explaining in triplicate as per usual. After waiting and then receiving an affirmation from the young dynasty tat-lung, Morgan continued on. "Alright, I'm going to make the whistle make a noise; you need to remember this one means to come to me, okay?" Morgan said. It was much easier to explain this to a very young tat-lung, it would seem, than it had been trying to convince Ryuusei and Seimei of this particular thing.
It was not of course that Shigeru was not as smart as the other two, he was just simply not as world-wise, especially not even remotely as wise of the world as Seimei was. Morgan was actually a bit thankful for that, but wouldn't say it aloud. Morgan used the whistle to make one loud short whistle; the 'come' command for all of the other tat-lungs. It was separate from the one used for the other creatures purposefully; so that the tat-lungs could tell that they were different and not expected when other creatures were called. "I'm going to repeat it, okay?" Morgan said, and then made the call on the whistle yet again. Shigeru gave an affirmative to this; and Morgan nodded. "We'll need to practice." The bespectacled human said. "We'll go over it a few times, and you can just come closer and swim around or whatever."
After a quick beat, an affirmative was given by the young tat-lung. Morgan knew that they needed to work on it, because in all honesty; the whistled commands were usually much easier to not notice as being different. Morgan had been told as much by the other tat-lungs after working with them, so Morgan wanted to make sure that this was taken in by the young Shigeru easily enough. "Alright, we'll start now."
Morgan made the correct signal with the whistle, and then waited. Shigeru swam a bit closer to Morgan, after a moment. Morgan gave the creature an affirmative, and then continued. Another correct signal with the whistle, and then yet another moment where Shigeru swam a bit closer. This would continue for some time on repeat, until Morgan finally gave a wrong but similar command. Shigeru was actually tricked by this, as was expected, and Morgan took some time to explain the differences to the tat-lung.
After this rather thorough explanation, Morgan started again. They worked on and on quite a bit with the whistled signals; each time that they were correct, Shigeru would come closer. When they were wrong, at first, Shigeru had a difficult time telling the difference. Soon enough, however, with lots of repetition, Shigeru was beginning to get more and more of them correct. The dyansty tat-lung was performing incredibly well after only ten minutes, being able to tell some of the closer whistle signals were different from one another. Morgan continued working with the tat-lung baby until he was excellently responding to the come signal; swimming towards Morgan every single time the correct signal was given; and not responding whenever a wrong one was given. Finally, Morgan was convinced that he knew that quite well, and nodded to him. "Good job, Shigeru, I think everything else will be easy after that. You're so smart."
The next bit of training that they were going to work on today was the understanding of the word 'no'. For an animal with regular animal intelligence, 'no' was as simple as a command not to do something that was currently being attempted. As for a sentient creature, however, it was an exercise in ethics, morals to an eventual degree, and even in argumentation if the individual was combative enough. Morgan was sure that with Shigeru, it would be a bit of an exercise in patience, since he was so young and couldn't yet really do a lot of communication. However, Shigeru did seem to have an idea of affirmative and negative, which would help in the long run. Thankfully, Shigeru seemed to be picking up things as quickly as a tat-lung could at this age, so Morgan was pleased enough to begin. He was still proud about being told that he was smart; like a child would be.
Morgan would have to begin explaining it now, however, they were quite glad that this was at the very least a verbal idea. "The next thing we are going to work on is the concept of 'no'. No is like... Like a negative response. It basically means that something isn't right, or you shouldn't do something, or that the answer is a negative. It's a complicated concept, but once you get it, and understand what the word sounds like, you'll know when I say it that it will be a situation where the answer is a negative." Morgan explained, trying to keep an eye on the creature's bright green eyes to see if it was clicking. Morgan couldn't really tell, however, and instead waited for Shigeru to give them an answer. Eventually, Shigeru gave an affirmative, appearing to have thought about this for some time before finally giving an answer.
Morgan was glad that they had invested in the ring of animal tongues, instead of getting ribbons of telepathy for all of the tat-lungs. That would have been a nightmare to keep up with, that was for sure. The ring made it so much easier to explain things, and it would no doubt help with teaching them to communicate eventually since Morgan signed, spoke in common, and used the ring to communicate with them practically every time they spoke to them. "Alright Shigeru, do you want to practice?" The last time that this was done with tat-lungs, Seimei and Ryuusei had practiced it by asking questions, however, Morgan knew that Shigeru couldn't really ask questions yet, at least not well. Morgan had to think of a way for them to properly practice the idea of 'no' without the questioning that Morgan had used with Seimei and Ryuusei. They'd have to quickly come up with a game plan.
Shigeru and Morgan went back and forth for a bit, Practicing the 'no' by Morgan saying a word (sometimes 'no') and Shigeru would give Morgan a positive response if the word was the word for 'no' and then would give a negative response if it was not the 'no' word. Shigeru learned this one easily, picking up the sounds much easier some way. After about ten minutes, Morgan nodded. "Alright, you seem to understand 'no' now, but there is still an important aspect of this that you need to know. Lots of things have opposites; the opposite of 'no' is usually considered to be 'yes' for the most part." Morgan began explaining. Shigeru listened closely, watching Morgan's through the ring's influence. "Yes is a term that means positive, that something is happening, or that something is correct. It sounds like 'yes'." Morgan continued. They would need to practice that as well now, too.
