See? Everything was just fine, even if the rest of her didn't care to align with the calming thought. It would come in time, just like the same center would come to Meade eventually. "What d'ya think, they fine Meade?" Lethalia asked of her companion instead. Bringing a critter to the mansion didn't entirely defend against something bad happening, but it was a safeguard for sure. Even one as little and skittish as this one would be able to sense something amiss far before the humanoid could, and that ought to be all she'd need. Not like there was ever a threat large enough (that she'd witnessed anyway) that would require Vidarr's strength. Meade looked up at her owner after the rather thorough inspection of the leaves fanned out in front of her, questioning in her eyes. "Well, if y'think they're good, then I'm keepin' 'em." October|33

Satisfied enough that her input meant something, it appeared to give the hen enough confidence to go off a short ways to inspect a smell that captured her attention. Well, that was good. At least one of them could keep their shit under control for the moment. It took all of her willpower for the woman to keep herself from scanning the horizon for imagined threats, sighing to try and batten down the sudden shakes that wanted to come through. There was nothing wrong if she didn't make anything wrong, and that was what this.... looming anxiety loved to make her do. Someone she knew loved telling her that if it was something you were worrying about, it meant it wasn't happening except for in your head, and therefore was nothing to worry about. The words had upset the satyr quite a lot back then, but nowadays she was coming to see the merit of it. October|34

It could be an idea to apply to the mansion, to be fair. There was quite little that had actually happened to the satyr here, and any occurrences had been mostly harmless. Worst that could have happened already occurred - having lost track of Esti years ago when they'd first been here. That was hard to tell if it was the mansion, or if she'd simply lost track of her own pet... The thought made her cast a worried glance at Meade at the end of her leash, but the hen was still quite close and inspecting a tiny pumpkin at the foot of a nearby apple tree. Well, this one wasn't nearly as bold as Esti, at least she wasn't about to wander off on her own even if she were to slip her collar. "Didja find something baby girl?" she asked, sauntering over to the deadened tree to get a look herself. Another shock of color, a bright orange pumpkin no larger than the satyr's hand in a nest of twisted roots and papery leaves. Meade lv|12 ly|12 October|35

Finding her center once more, the satyr knealt by Meade to inspect her little find. Of course it would be the only other living thing around that the hen would sniff out. "Cute," Lethalia commented absently, reaching out to pick the pumpkin up, maybe let Meade get a better look at it. Upon trying to scoop it up, a tiny vine darted out from beneath the pumpkin, wrapping around one of the woman's finger in a flash. Though her high-pitched squeal alarmed the hen, Lethalia managed to not jerk her hand back as quickly as she wanted to. Just when she was talking herself down... Uttering choice words under her breath, she let out a breath and pulled back her hand slowly, pulling on the vine that latched itself to her finger. Meade had hit the opposite end of her leash, darting away from the fast movements and noises as quickly as her terrified little claws could carry her. October|36

Meade had sniffed out something much more alive than Lethalia had even expected, the vine giving a little flail of resistance as it was pulled on. A tangle of plant matter came out of the leaves, eventually tugging the minuscule pumpkin up with it. "Ugh," she scoffed a little, twisting the construct around to find another grinning face on one side of the gourd. Now that she grasped it's vine between two fingers instead of letting it cling to her, the thing didn't seem all too happy about it's captivity, though didn't have much to really do about it either. "Y'okay, Meade," Lethalia called, wrinkling her nose at the flailing creature. What on earth was this thing? "C'mon, come 'n look. Y'found it, after all." In some way it was Meade's fault that she picked up this awful little thing, the least the hen could do was come and look at her 'prize'. October|37

Lethalia had to admit that was kind of what she deserved for sticking her fingers at things unknown in the mansion though. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, right? Not prepared to resign itself to it's fate, the pumpkin monster set about flailing a bit more as it was approached by the sarane, seeming too find her more of a danger than the humanoid that it was suspended by. A 'mighty' hiss came from it's jagged cut mouth, spitting a few tiny pumpkin seeds in it's teeny tiny ire. Finding her worries dissolving again, Lethalia giggled to herself and encouraged Meade further, "See? It's not even scary." Menacing though it tried quite hard to be. The encouraging tone was enough to get her back up here to actually look at what she'd found even as it wiggled in it's capture. Surely the hen could have found her something a little nicer like another flower, or even more creepy leaves would have been preferable... October|38

"Lookit that brave face," she teased Meade as she approached, her muzzle wrinkled with the intensity of her gaze on this creature. A cautious look to her owner, and she took another step forward, bumping it with her nose - only to skitter back when it let out another tremendous hiss and grasping out with a hand-like vine appendage. "Don't lookit me, I dunno why y'found it," Lethalia told her at the confused glance, amused in spite of herself. Should she really be letting Meade torment the little guy, even if it was unintentional? It was quite hard to tell if this little monster was even... really alive, or just some vines magicked into moving. Either way, maybe they were picking on him just a little bit. Unsure if she wanted to deal with the thing, she set it back down on the ground, a flick of her had to get it's vine to let go of her finger. October|39

Closer to her domain on the ground, Meade was much faster to come back and inspect what was writing around on the ground before the pumpkin-head got it's baring about it and sat upright with another wet spray of pumpkin seed. At the very least, the hen was finding herself less afraid of something. "Don't bother 'im too much, now," Lethalia told the hen, smirking anyway. It was hard to fathom a moving pumpkin to do any harm, but still. There was always a chance. The pocketpet had calmed himself somewhat, though let out a small noise akin to a growl an flicked a vine out at the curious nose, though she was quite unaffected by it's bluffing. "Made a 'friend', ay?" she asked, even if the pumpkin was nowhere near as curious about the hen as she was about it. "Meade... I really don' wanna bring y'little buddy home." But was she going to anyway because the hen seemed to want to? Why yes. Yes she was. Meade lv|13 ly|13 October|40

It was always interesting going to the mansion when she saw so little of it. Lethalia seldom went even in concurrent months, so the changes between seasons (or whatever the place had deemed worth celebrating) were even more severe. Imposing as ever, that big wrought iron fence still circled the entirety of its' grounds. This time around though, it had taken a more Victorian feel to it - the space between bars got a little closer, a fancy looking arch of metal crossing the top of each fence panel to frame delicate filigree roses. In a real life mirror beneath the cold metal were well tended bushes of roses, none of the lovely leaves or petals so much as straying from within the mansion's boundaries, even if the fence they grew against practically asked them to weave within it. "Look Meade," Lethalia prompted, kneeling down to the hen. Meade lv|13.1 ly|13.1 February|1

Meade had grown big enough she definitely couldn't carry her over to the mansion anymore, and the little-big hen craned her head over when her owner knelt nearby. "Lookit that pretty purple, just like you! Y'wanna go in an' see 'em?"Her butter-colored sweetheart of a hen had grown little by little, surely not at the pace of her father or any other sarane the woman had reared thus far. At first, the babies' stunted-seeming growth had worried her, but eventually it seemed to be a more common talk of the town than she'd ever expected. It seemed to be something related to how the creatures also refused to breed nowadays. Ever the mother, Lethalia had worried herself sick that there was a chance she wasn't feeding her little ones well enough, so the talk of other people helped ease her worry. They were all flourishing, just much more slowly than she had grown accustomed to. February|2

The supposed abundance of flowers to be had this time of year was definitely one of the ideas behind bringing little Meade back again. She was becoming such a regular companion to the mansion, Lethalia thought she would quite miss her when the sarane grew too big to come along. Not that she often ventured in the mansion - any sarane could trapeze around the mansion grounds with her! Smirking to herself, Lethalia was pleased that Meade at least showed an interest in looking at the flowers. Having attained a more adult hen's wide muzzle, try as she might there was no way she was going to get her face between the bars to actually get a look. Maybe they'd gotten out often enough she wasn't quite as much of a scardey baby; now that would be quite nice. At the very least it meant less of a production just getting in the gate. February|3

That was the hope anyway. Her creatures, nearly like humanoid children, were quite decent at shocking her with the things they were. Both what they ended up capable of doing, the things they discovered on their own... or the really small things that they ended up finding particularly scary. Their individualism could come as a shock, even if she wasn't the type of person to think a dog had no personality. But the excitement that Meade followed her to the gate, simply at the promise of looking at flowers... well, it was a far cry from being afraid to even cross the threshold. "Well, g'girl, Meade," the satyr couldn't help but croon, brightening at the adolescent's enthusiasm. At her owner's pause, Meade's head craned around to give her a gentle headbutt with her buds of horns, equal parts a display of affection as much as a 'can we go now? now? please? February|4

"Okay, okay, sorry for bein' too slow," Lethalia giggled as she fiddled with the latch on the gate, adding "but as I remember, last time you were bein' the scardey hen that was holdin' us up." Not that it seemed to make much of a difference to the hen now, since the satyr had to smother a snort as Meade's head butted her back in another lovey command. Why weren't they going yet, though?! "Jeez, little one. First lesson, courage. Second lesson - gonna be patience." Her 'da never got that one down, either. As little as Meade seemed to be taking after him, there were times when she saw him reflected in this little one. Unfortunately Vidarr's bullheaded nature wasn't exactly what she'd wanted him to pass down to his offspring - as Meade tried to push her way around her owner's legs - but she could deal with it. But if she'd managed to deal with the sire, no doubt she could live though getting his hatchlings up to speed. Except Meade's older brother - the branching horned drake intimidated her more than she'd care to admit. He was likely going to be a more sizable challenge than the one she brought along today. Lethalia braced herself, cringing a little at the awful cackling squeal the gate let out upon being yanked open, as if it hadn't been moved in years. That much was a lie as much as other denizens of the city spoke of exploring the mansion like it was some kind of fun house, there must always be other people here she wasn't even aware of. At least the mansion's magic weaver could be commended for their attention to detail. Happily for her this time, Meade was significantly less disturbed by the gate this time around, which should cause much less fuss for this trip! February|6
