"Lovely job, Meade! It's not scary, right?" Keeping her one sided dialogue with the hen felt important, stepping their way through the eerie portal - though nothing had changed upon making it to the other side. As special as the mansion itself was, sometimes it certainly could be a little... lackluster. Lethalia full well knew of the curiosities that could be found here, both trinkets for taking home and ways the mansion grounds contorted itself. She'd half expected something to happen; the ground beneath them to warp or the rose bushes grow spindly fingers to reach out for them, or for the magics to snatch a hen away from her like it did years ago. Instead, their entry was almost normal; it looked like not a lot was going on outside this time of year. It was almost as if she'd been reassuring herself it wasn't scary more than she was addressing the hen. February|7

Meade was off almost as soon as they'd gotten past the gate, having no similar baggage that her owner did over worries of magic or anything happening around here. The hen made a beeline for the flowers just around the gate, though Lethalia could never make out what attracted her to them. Made her grateful for the leash tethering them together if her critter was likely to take off after a plant more than she was likely to start chasing someone's lerrel. It wasn't an innate instinct that had Meade avoiding the thorns upon the stalks, but 'wisdom' garnered from many other plunges made into bramble bushes. Good thing that she wasn't about to take a bite out of one of the blooms, one less thing to prompt the mansion out of it's inert state. Dealing with the place when it was placid and quiet like this, was much preferable to when it seemed to actually take note of their presence. February|8

Leaving Meade to pick her way through whatever rose bushes she cared to, Lethalia trailed behind her with leash looped around her wrist to let the hen wander mostly where she wanted to. This, this felt more like walking a large dog to allow them to 'do their business' on all of the bushes more than it felt like she had a dangerous reptile on the other end. Yeah, dangerous, this butter-yellow hen with her face periodically buried in a deep purple bloom. Much as the satyr knew it was coming, it was hard to reconcile the imagery of this little soft thing with the same rage she faced with drakes coming of age. Always a chance that people were wrong, and hens didn't go through the same thing? Meade's timid nature often caused her to wonder if she even did have a flighted hen on her hands, but the growth of those spindly wing fingers argued otherwise. February|9

"Think we gotta' go inside this time?" Lethalia prompted, hoping to jar Meade out of her flower-induced reverie. It wasn't as though the satyr really wanted to venture inside, or actually planned on it... The idea was becoming more and more tempting as the hen picked her way down the row of manicured roses though; there really wouldn't be much else of interest out here, or so it seemed thus far. The little hen would likely argue otherwise, seeming just besides herself with the excitement of being able to twist through the branches and blooms. "Meade... I'm glad you're havin' fun, but..." But she really didn't want to walk the entire mansion grounds just to let Meade visit every bloom; the land the mansion sat upon only seemed like it expanded once you were within the gate, and she could see the slim wrought iron fence bordered y flowers extend out in front of them for what seemed like miles. Pretty as the roses were, the satyr's gaze and mind began to yearn for something just a little bit different to look at. It was almost like the mere thought of needing something different manifested it, in the way that only magic could. A golden glint caught her eye, looking quite lost in the sea of lavender and green. Gingerly, she reached past Meade's head and deeper into the rosebush, fingers closing on the unnatural metal gleam - and out she pulled a trio of lavender glass and, gold-trimmed roses. Meade sniffed them and quickly dismissed the objects, even as Lethalia tried to show them off to her. They were a neat find, and the satyr pocketed her trinkets readily. Easier that she doesn't have a fight with Meade over these ones; the hen couldn't care less about flowers that weren't real. Lovely as these metalwork roses are though, they didn't change the head-splitting sameness of the bushes Meade immediately returned to. February|11

Countless rows of roses eventually made the satyr's eyes go a bit cross, making her groggy with their sameness. Meade for her part, was no less excited for the next slightly differently purple colored rose than she was for the first one. It would be charming, were it not for the idea that she'd be out here well into the time the mansion changed faces for next month if it were left up to Meade to decide. Lethalia's pretty certain there's not a single shade of lavender she hasn't seen on a rose at this point. Finally they were coming upon something else in the mansion grounds - at least gave her something to look at! At first glance, it looked like it could have been an orchard of sorts, with a multitude of smallish bushy trees, planted in super neat rows and columns as they always would be in a place like this. Quite the odd time of year for the mansion to have an orchard, though. Meade's meandering brought them closer to the bough of trees, and they proved to be quite purple as much as the roses themselves were. "Do'ya see, Meade? the satyr pressed, pointing out the neat rows of plants that had seemingly spring up out of nowhere. The mansion was like that sometimes; she had to put fourth nearly all efforts to keep from thinking about just what amount of magic made this place possible. Usually ended up thinking about it anyway. Still, Meade proved tough to pry from the endless flower bushes she was enjoying, even if the top of her nose was stippled with thorn scratches. "C'mon baby girl, I'll betcha it's more flowers!" Another attempt had to be made, because the satyr felt she might wither away if this was how she was doomed to spend the rest of her days. Because just making the henbaby leave her precious fun was too much to ask. Lethalia had a leash and everything, it would be easy enough to haul Meade away even as large as she had grown. If there was one thing she absolutely couldn't do... it was tearing one of her pets away from something they were enjoying, or make them do something they didn't care to. It went double for the little ones. It was a good thing she wasn't dealing with babies that were smart enough to take advantage of her tendency to be a pushover with them. One humanoid child who had learned to quite successfully to leverage her mother's nature was one too many. Didn't need the four legged ones getting in on it, too. That would be far more trouble than it was worth. Meade's side-eyed glace led the woman to wonder if she was more aware than the hen let on. February|14

Always a chance for her to of inherited more brains from her dam than she did her sire, that was for certain. Leth ought to be on her toes for that kind of thing, considering these babies were absolutely not all going to be like their parents, let alone like the one she happened to know the best. So Meade might be a little clever - time would tell. The memory of that so-called charm of brilliance flitted across her mind, safe at home and demanding to be recalled, like coin burning a hole in her pocket in their demands to be spent. Though Meade might be an interesting choice for such magic, the thought was shouldered aside for now. It would be best to see what the hen grew into, and to wait for her to mature if it were to happen. She was so unsure of who to give the charm to, she'd probably considered every one of her pets at least once. Meade lv|16 ly|16 February|15

Getting closer to the new set of bushes was enough to shake the satyr from her idle thoughts. It was easy enough to drift away while letting Meade check out her flowers, just enjoying the nice mild-but-still-winter day, but Lethalia tended to need to rein it in a little. Everything she was mulling - all of it would come in time, so there was no reason to dwell so deeply on it just right now. For the time being... "Meade! C'mere! There's somthin' new to look at," she called, hoping for better luck this time around. Her hen was still loathe to leave her plants, but looked up long enough to let herself get drawn away from the roses by an opportunistic yank of the leash. Meade knew she was getting bigger, and she knew she was going to be strong... but it wasn't enough to brace against being moved now. February|16

"Hey, s'okay," Lethalia whispered a soothing tone to her upset henbaby, though it was hard to fathom Meade hadn't gotten her fill of looking at the same lavender roses yet. "Look here, dummy. There's somethin' else for you t' stick y'nose in." Meade was resistant to looking in the direction she was bidden, naturally, and would have much preferred to going back and... well, smelling the roses. Strange creature, Lethalia can't imagine she's going to have the same problem in any other sarane. As far as personality quirks go, an obsession with flowers as an obligate carnivore wasn't one that she ever would have guessed would have cropped up, but here they were. Stranger things could and did happen, but being so used to even her most mild-mannered sarane being a terror made the hen's behavior all the more puzzling. Even her other hens didn't act this mild; Stark probably had more bite to him. February|17

Even marginally upset as she was, sitting back and resisting any pressure that would guide her elsewhere, that was the most fierce resistance garnered from the hen. At this age, Esti would have been a hissing smoking mess in the same situation, and any of the boys would have been likely to take a swing at her for the transgression. Something about the difference clicked, leaving the satyr blinking at Meade for a moment. This was all attention, wasn't it? Even if it was 'bad' attention, it still meant her eyes were only for the hen and nothing else, which meant whatever Meade was doing, it was something she was being rewarded for. Usually she found her sarane more independent than this, but if she was able to apply more 'domestic' training methods with her, it would be a welcome tactic. It also bode some hope that perhaps Meade wouldn't be as savage to deal with the others as an adult. February|18

Some training tactics didn't work on all creatures of course - they all had quite different needs between individuals every bit as much as another species had different needs. Normally, this isn't something she'd try with a predator or any of her other sarane. To be frank, the others wouldn't give less of a shit if she did it to them. But Meade is just young and plenty timid enough for it to have a good chance. She wouldn't exactly want all of her creatures to be as spooky and clingy as this one, but it did have it's merits. So Lethalia gave up on fighting in any form with Meade; the hen gave a lurch as the resistance she had been fighting against suddenly gave way. A little tumble forward an a shake of her head, she glanced up at the satyr, head still spinning. Did she not have to go that way anymore? February|19

Feeling comfortable enough to leave Meade even in this magic-seeped place, Lethalia dropped the leash completely to let the hen head the direction she chose. Such a sweet thing, the hen didn't even seem to realize that the leash wouldn't be durable enough to hold her for much longer since she never tested it. The satyr was curious if it might even 'contain' her as an adult, such as she was. Emboldened by her newfound freedom, Meade did with it exactly what was expected. Straight back to her rosebushes, this time able to dive between the hedges to let the thorns itch her back and aching growing wings. This was great! If the mansion was going to be up to something, Lethalia supposed she would see it as long as the henbaby was kept in her field of vision. She took a slow, deliberate step away while Meade's attention was elsewhere. Meade lv|17 ly|17 February|20
