"I don't understand what we're doing here." Dae muttered, following after Aura. His fur bristled along his neck. There was something about them that had seemed familiar, something that had spoken deep into his soul- but no matter how often he spent time around them, something just felt wrong. It rubbed him the wrong way. So, despite having no reason, he disliked them on principle. Going out to some random, godforsaken place and being told he was expected to fight some monstrosity? Worse.
Aura ground their back teeth. They really disliked ribbons of telepathy, but they were useful, especially in fighting scenarios where they wanted their intentions kept hidden. This was precisely why; some of the creatures could never have a pleasant conversation. "Look. We get some nice things out of doing this. You don't have to like me, but we're probably going to save some poor soul from dying. Can you cooperate just long enough for us to get this done, and then you can go back to...whatever it is you do? Since it's not like you help me feed you or anything?"

Dae sighed. He didn't like the idea of someone suffering because he didn't like the ssashirk meeting his standards, though admittedly he didn't even know how they didn't. They gave him the best meat cuts they could get; they kept him housed with his family. They didn't ask him for much, and they didn't force their company upon him. He just felt like something was missing every time he looked at their face. Sometimes, he was so sure he saw someone else where they stood out of the corner of his eye...but when he'd turn to stare, they'd have that cold purple gaze. "Fine. But I'm doing it for them, not you."
"Noted. Do you even know how much you eat, by the way? Those filets I get you aren't cheap, you know." Aura muttered. They had no idea why the PHIL seemed to resistant to them, but they'd just accepted it as part of the deal with the kennel they got. They descended the steps of the tower, feeling the temperature start to drop with every foot down.

Even the torches seemed to flicker the farther they descended. There was a chill in the air, one that Aura felt to their core; they were built for the warmth, after all, not the cold. Despite the summer outside, it was as if this basement did not get the memo. They didn't feel fear towards it; no, they'd never fought before, but they had seen others fight. They were pretty sure they knew how it worked, and a giant, spiky armored bear helped a little.
Dae considered this. Yes, he'd been eating exceptionally well since Aura had moved in. In the enclosure where he stayed with the other PHILs, luxuries had started to pop up, like a large but shallow pool they could relax and- to a degree- bathe in. They were rude, but they were right; they weren't just 'taking care' of him. They were providing an exceptional level of care to both him and his family. "If it's so much trouble to feed us, I can go out and hunt." He phrased it snidely, but his tone implied he'd understood their point.

"Oh, you know how to hunt? Here I thought you only knew how to nap and be rude to me." This time it was their turn to be unnecessarily rude, but honestly, it was only because their intent was impossible to hear in Aura's tone of voice. In reality, they were only playfully joking, and their strange emotional connection made that clear. He knew it was not intended to be hurtful from the emotions they felt coming from them.
"Watch it or I'll think you're the monster we're down here to hunt." He responded mildly. He could smell something strange, and as they moved into the final open area, the scents assaulted his nose. There were too many to be able to locate exactly the creature they were looking for, but he would try his best. He lowered his nose to the concrete, trying to separate all of them into categories. Some were people; some were stale, days old. Most were, in fact. The most recent scents were fear, anxiety...and something so foreign he hadn't the faintest idea of what it was.

Aura smiled at his response, and waited while he scented the ground. In the meantime, they explored around the entrance. The basement was much larger than the tower that spiraled to the sky; it continued on out of their sight, through a door they didn't intend to touch until Dae was prepared. "What does the mutant creature smell like?" They asked, out of curiosity. Their ability to parse scents was not nearly as sophisticated as the PHIL's, after all. Mainly, they were just listening to his idle thoughts as he tried to understand what he was dealing with.
"To be honest, I can't explain it. It isn't like anything familiar." He lifted his head. The scent was everywhere; it crossed over itself, went through this room in circles, but stopped at the stairs. Whatever it was didn't want to go up there, for some reason. He lumbered towards the door into the next room. "I guess we'll find out what it is when we find it. So what's the plan, when we do?"
