The gym lady was mostly nondescript, but completely dwarfed the bespectacled human that was quite small-built and somewhat on the short side. Morgan didn't really pay much attention to her at all, past what was considered socially passable, at least. After receiving the membership card, the small human lead the houluh out on the leash to the so-called dexterity training area. It was quite hot outside, so Morgan had chosen a later time in the evening to train today. That was quite abnormal for Morgan, at least, who liked to be at home when the sun started its descent overall. Nico walked at heel quite daintily, already panting to control his body heat. Morgan noticed that there was a water pump for water; at least. A bit barbaric, but it had some charm to it. Morgan went ahead and filled a bucket with the water, and then sat it down for Nico to drink whenever he felt like it.
Morgan had actually decided already not to bother with treats today; they were working on formulating the houluh diet, and didn't want to spoil the houluh's appetite. Morgan was already testing it a bit on their-self, and after about a week of it not hurting them, Morgan was ready to try it on Nico. Leave it to Morgan to test pet food on their-self as they make it before actually trying it on their critters, right? The human then took the leash off of the houluh's collar carefully, knowing that it would only get in the way for the training they were going to do. As soon as he was let off of the leash, the houluh moved to take a deep drink from the water bucket. Morgan had expected that to happen, and it gave them time to quickly remove some toys from their backpack; one of which was something Morgan hadn't used before.
The flyball was something that Morgan had sent a courier to retrieve a long while back, but it had sat in the container for so long that Morgan had nearly forgotten about it. Having a creature that could actually play fetch and go get the flyball was a lot more enjoyable of a prospect than Morgan would have thought nor would admit if asked. However, the flyball was supposedly a speedy little randomly flying thing, and the bespectacled human figured that it would be great for training Nico to use his body in a more agile manner. Morgan had already made sure to find a lesser used area to work in; an area with a small but decently well kept agility competition set up. It was actually incredibly cute; little platforms here and there, the easiest possible configuration of poles to teach the weaving motion, two see-saws, and even a tunnel. The middle of the area had holes, presumably for extra poles that could be configured.
The pair would probably have to eventually go indoors, when it started to get dark, but for now the outside would be just fine. It was about four in the afternoon; so they had a goodly amount of time before the sun began to eclipse the horizon for the day. The bespectacled human was trying to come up with ah idea on what to run the houluh first. Morgan had realized a while back that the houluh was a bit more agile than other pups of his size and age, so it was possible that he could become quite dexterous with the right amount of effort. They were not going to try to do it one straight shot, however. Morgan figured that a few gym visits between training sessions could not hurt at all in the long run. Morgan finally decides that they could probably do with the agility stuff first, to get a gauge of what the houluh could do.
Now that Morgan had a game plan, there was still one more thing to do. Morgan had not planned originally to use RoTs at all. Morgan didn't want a creature anywhere near their mind, especially not the sentient ones. However; Morgan had a bit of a regrettable soft spot for the houluh; and it would be much easier to do this particular sort of training with a ribbon to be able to explain what Morgan wanted. The bespectacled human had purchased one from the jackalope, and it turned out to be very abnormally colored; it even matched the pet bed that Morgan had received for Nico. It had been cut before, so Morgan was given both halves. The smaller side was perfect for Morgan's wrist, and the larger one was just long enough for Nico's neck. Morgan gently tied it on to the creature first; and then stared at the smaller side for a moment before sighing and putting it on their wrist.
Morgan was expecting an immediate barrage of questions, complaints, gibberish, or annoying humanoid banter. However; the human found it blissfully quiet. Morgan closed their eyes and tried to focus on the strange, wispy connection. It was certainly there, but it was more like following a hint of honeysuckle during the musky cool nightfall during the fall. It required a lot of concentration, and then Morgan finally found it. It wasn't like speaking, not at all like speaking, more like a sort of understanding. Morgan knew suddenly that speaking to the creature through the link wouldn't do much more than anything else verbally aloud. They were going to have to find another way of communicating with this; a new way. The bespectacled human opened their eyes, and found that the houluh was staring back up into their own eyes, with his reddish chocolate eyes. Morgan waved the creature on over, and began walking toward the agility set, that wasn't too far away.
Something that Morgan would not have realized, is that the houluh had just noticed and understood in his own, animalistic way, Morgan's strange chaotic mind. There was no real need right now to try to communicate in a way that could possibly be understood as a sort of mental-verbal manner. The two would perhaps eventually find a way to communicate using the RoT, but Morgan had never before used one, so they were not sure how to do this at first. The pair made their way to the agility set up, and then Morgan walked along side it, trying to memorize the technical pattern it would require. Morgan was absolutely sure that given enough practice, they could run the creature through it easily enough; they had trained very well before this. Morgan had been considering doing this for some time, but it was important to improve the self-protecting capabilities of the small houluh pup. Morgan knew that he was eventually going to need it, if he kept accompanying Morgan everywhere.
Morgan memorized the agility stuff that was set up in the dexterity training yard temporarily, and then gave the command for the houluh to follow Morgan. Morgan figured that they would walk through it first; and then begin to work through it faster and faster, with the houluh following Morgan. The human was indeed a bit more dexterous than most creatures, in fact, Morgan was quite good at doing a few things that most of the time, only critters were good at navigating through. Morgan started at the obvious beginning of the agility area, stepping with confidence onto the small steps. The houluh followed close behind, moving up onto the first step; and then he followed Morgan up the steps one at a time, slowly. Practice makes perfect, and they would have to do this quite a few times anyway. They were, in fact, going to break this up into blocks if they could.
The gym training was, overall, incredibly important to the two of their continued training. Morgan wanted to learn more about the houluh pup before choosing new things to train. What better way of figuring out the temperament and inclination of an animal than to continue to spend time with it in ever varying situations? The human tended to look upon things like a giant experiment; and Morgan tended to keep written records of new findings and such along the way. It was an important part of Morgan's exploration of the world, and this training with what was originally going to be a control animal (a creature of non-sentience produced by the labs without any special powers) had quickly become more of a leisure activity, and now the record-keeping was more of a formality. It was quite embarrassing, really. Morgan heard a slight noise and turned around, to find that the houluh had slipped a bit from the current step, and was now trying to scramble back up on it. Morgan grimaced, trying not to chuckle.
The houluh was not often coddled at all; and typically he found ways to get himself out of his own predicaments. Sure, Morgan was always incredibly careful with their creatures and probably a much better creature owner than they would think of theirself, Morgan rarely showed a parent's coddling affection. Morgan needed him to be able to pick his own way, and take care of himself. There was no need for the houluh to completely lose his ability to take care of himself because he was being taken care of. Morgan of course would not allow him to be harmed, but getting hurt was another thing entirely. It was important for him to be able to learn to use his own body to fix issues that he creates; it was part of increasing the physical condition.
Soon, Nico pulls himself up from the precarious position he had slipped to, and makes his way up the stairs to where Morgan was standing. There you go, boyo. Morgan thought, unknowingly slipping it across the RoT. They were not planning on saying that, of course, out loud.
The rest of the steps were simple enough from the top while going slowly, the descent would be a tad easier. However, whenever speed was applied- it would be so much more difficult. Morgan knew that, the creature would most likely slip the first few times that he did it on his own, later on. Morgan descended the steps onto the ground, and Nico clambered down as well. Soon, they were both on the ground and moving on to the next agility obstacle; the see-saw. That was going to be a difficult one, Morgan was sure, because Morgan wouldn't be able to go on it their self first, because the creature might get launched if they were not careful. The bespectacled human stood at the side of it, and then gently patted it with their hand on the side that was on the ground currently. The houluh immediately moved onto the seesaw, following Morgan's hands and indications to do what Morgan wanted. The empathic link certainly helped.
Nico could tell that Morgan was pleased when he moved onto the seesaw, and when Morgan moved forward, hand held out, Nico scrambled up the seesaw, and quite obviously began to freak out whenever the seesaw transferred his weight over the fulcrum and began to fall on the other side. He quickly corrected, moving his center of gravity back just a small amount. Finally, he made it to the other side, feeling the seesaw hit the ground before he bounded off. Morgan was pretty pleased with this; they had expected there to be a lot more trouble with this aspect than with the other aspects. Nico didn't seem to like the seesaw much of course, but the bespectacled human was just pleased that he did well with it for his first, small go at it. Morgan moved on with Nico following them to the next thing; a simple climbing structure shaped like an upside down 'V'. Morgan was not at all going to climb this their-self, at all.
It was mostly because Morgan needed the creature to do this slowly the first few times before actually being ran through it for the agility purposes. Even the slow starts helped in the conditioning process, Morgan knew that from experience. Morgan was larger than the houluh, and would find it much easier to go over the obstacle by putting their hand over it and vaulting in that way, using momentum, and the houluh would certainly not know what to do. So instead, Morgan makes a motion with their hand for the 'jump up' command for Nico. The houluh dances his feet as he typically did as he tried to figure something out when he wasn't completely sure, and then he began using the raised 'steps' on the obstacles to move up and climb to the top. After this, Morgan asked the creature to continue following them using the command, and walked to the next obstacle, forcing Nico to move down off of the obstacle to follow.
The next obstacle that was to be conquered was a long tube. Morgan was small enough to fit into this over-sized tube, but was not about to do something as undignified as crawling through an animal obstacle tube, even for this training. Instead, they were going to have to find another way for him to go through the tube. Morgan figured that the follow command would do just fine, but they would have to put the creature into the tube their self at first. Morgan gently nudged the houluh into the tube, and then gave the command for follow, walking along the outside of the tube. At first, Nico tried to come out of the tube in order to follow the human on the outside of it, but Morgan put him back into the tube with another nudge, and then performed the same action. It took another five attempts, but soon, Nico flashed through the tube, trying to get to the outside so that he could follow Morgan.
