Fiera didn't have to worry about sunburn, really. Her thick hair, dark ears, and black tail protected her from most heat. Still, this was a little overbearing. She was glad her hard hat had a bit of a rim on it- it kept the sun out of her eyes for the most part, letting her work without glare. Serkan seemed to be enjoying himself though, soaking in the light without a care in the world. He stretched himself out next to the mine cart, his front feet crossed politely, his eyes squinting against the sun. His leaves were flared out to soak up as much light as possible. Fiera wished she was feeling that good right now. Mining was always the most uncomfortable of her adventures. Gardening at least always had the benefit of the cool shade of the trees and other plants, and plenty of freshly harvested food to eat.

The mansion was always different which made it harder to have an opinion on, but at least it was always different. She could go in at any time and always get something different, which made it easy to not focus on the more difficult parts of it. If she was lucky, she'd even find strange new creatures there. She hadn't made a trip there this month, now that she thought of it. She'd have to fix that- at least to get out of the house for a bit. As for fishing... well, Fiera had never been fishing before. Wasn't really on her agenda. But how unpleasant could it be? Relaxing on a river bank, able to take a dip in the water if it got too hot. Napping until something bit the line. It sounded idyllic, in Fiera's opinion. She'd definitely have to do it sometime. But here she was, mining.

Between the heat, the dirt, and the sweat, mining was definitely the most unpleasant thing that Fiera did on a regular basis. It was hard, exhausting work. So why did she keep doing it? It certainly felt a little silly. Well... she was a sucker for shiny rocks. That's really all there was to it, was the profit she gained. She had so many gemstones collected by now she could scarcely count them some days, and was raring for elemental crystals at all times as well. The regular gems could be sold for credits (which she did quite frequently), but elemental crystals were always a hot commodity in the labs, and could be sold to other citizens at a premium. Fiera was a lot of things, but... 'charitable' wasn't usually one of them. What could she say, she was a fan of the finer things in life, and that usually required hard work.

Sodalite and Amber make a good pair, don't you think? Deep blue and honeyed gold...

Speaking of the finer things, a couple had rolled out from under the boulder she was savaging while chipping away at it. Fiera leaned down and picked them up, turning them over in her hands. What a lucky find! Occasionally gems weathered out of the surrounding boulders on their own, outside of any miner's influence. It certainly made things easier on her, and they were usually beautifully rounded too, worn down into perfect shapes by years of erosion. It looked like she had a blue gem and a yellow one. The golden one was clearly amber, based on its hue and transparency. It wasn't filled this time though, a shame. Usually she could get a good price on filled amber, as there were some fossil aficionados in the city. Still, she could probably get a fair price for it. She shrugged and tossed it into the mine cart, the first of many.

The second one was... a little harder to identify. It was an iridescent blue stone about the size of a quarter, dark indigo with lighter streaks that caught the light. Fiera had a million guesses for it, but she knew better than to assume by this point. Instead, she shifted the amber in the mine cart aside and plucked out her gem identification guide instead. It had certainly come in handy from when she first bought it, that was for sure. She flipped through the pages and applied the gem's features to the tables, and finally found out what it was. Sodalite- a gem frequently used in ornamentation, in a categorical group of its own with a couple of other gems that she hadn't heard of before. Huh. Well, that was good enough for her. She tossed the book back into the cart along with the gem and closed the lid.

Serkan looked up at her lazily as she walked away from the mine cart and she gave him a nod. Grumpy or not, it would appear that strong sunlight was enough to sedate the seedling nyssa. It was time to go back to the rock, anyway. She had cleaved a great deal of stone off of it, opening the green streak as much as she could. From here she switched to her hammer and chisel, setting the rest of her equipment down on the ground. She worked to tease at least one piece of gem out of the great stone, even if it was just a scrap. Even a scrap could be put in a nice necklace, after all. After a few minutes of work, she was finally able to carve out a piece of green stone, letting it topple out of the boulder and onto the pebbly ground at her feet.

She picked it up and brushed it off on her shirt. It was quite small, but still likely valuable. It had a nice shine to it too, and a perfect lime green shade. She was sure she could make a pretty penny off of that. She opened up the mine cart again and put it in with the other gems before turning back to the boulder. She switched back over to the pick axe, but didn't start hammering away at it right away. That green vein seemed to be the only vein of valuables in this boulder, as far as she could tell. It would probably be in her best interest to move on. She turned around, scanning the area. She had slid down the lip of the crater into the quarry, and found herself in an area with... no available exit, as far as she could tell. Well then.

Sure enough, other than the odd boulder she had been hammering through already, she was surrounded on all sides by tall rock walls, the sun shining down on her from above the quarry. She could try and scramble back up the slope she slid down from, but that would be annoying if not incredibly difficult. She had trapped herself. Fiera sighed, knocking on the surrounding boulders that blocked her path. Solid stone, all the way around. "Well." She said to no one in particular, perhaps Serkan. "Looks like the only way out is through! Or up, I suppose- but I don't suppose you've learned how to fly in the past five minutes." She said to her nyssa. He yawned in response. "I thought so." She said, and walked up to the nearest rock wall. Looks like she was going to have to mine her way through it- and hope she found a less blocked path on the other side.

Is that a hunk of quartz? What a pretty clear-white crystal!

At least this chunk was somewhat profitable- it seemed like it had plenty of different materials mixed in, and even if they weren't pure, there were still some juicy hunks of crystal in there. Even though she wasn't mining for it specifically, Fiera managed to find a nice chunk of quartz just below the surface of the boulder. With just a few strokes, she was able to unveil it, and with just a couple more the stone dropped to the ground beneath her. She picked it up, turning it over in her hand. "Isn't that nice, Serkan?" She said, showing it to her nyssa. The bloodroot nyssa only yawned in response, clearly not caring less about Fiera's funny rocks. Fiera huffed and threw the quartz into the mine cart. "Well fine then. It's not like I put a ton of effort into getting that, or anything." She sighed, rolling her eyes.

She hadn't put in a lot of effort though, if she was being honest. The quartz had literally dropped at her feet while she was mining, to her delight. This boulder was proving relatively easy to chop through as well. She was bounded in on all sides by stone, but this one at least seemed pretty soft. Fiera doubted it would take too long for her to hack through it, and then her and Serkan would be home free, so to speak. Or at least free to explore the rest of this rock quarry that was sitting above the mines. She was amazed that she had never noticed this place before- perhaps it was new? The sign certainly was at least, but the amount of... well, rocks lying around implied that people had been working here for a while. Perhaps the quarry had only recently been opened to the public.

It could certainly be more organized here though, Fiera noted as she put a few more dents in the offending boulder with her pickaxe. She had entered it from the appropriate path, no shortcuts or anything, and she had managed to get caught in a dead-end pretty much right off the bat. She didn't see any better ways down, either. She sighed to herself, looking at the path she was carving through the rock. She was sure that the people who came after her would definitely appreciate this as a result, but she didn't really want to be the one blazing the trail so to speak. It was exhausting first of all, she thought to herself as she wiped off her brow again. And it didn't give her the opportunity to travel, explore, and bond with Serkan like she had been trying to do when she first came in here.

Ugh. At least the work was going fast, she noted as she threw off even more pieces of the boulder. She was expecting it to fracture further (and made sure her hard hat was latched on tight as a result), but to her surprise the softness of the stone made it a cinch to just... tunnel right through. The depth made her nervous though, what with the lack of stability of the structure, and she backed out after a few minutes to see how much further she had to tunnel. Serkan lifted his head briefly to look at her as she exited the tunnel again, but put his head back down again upon realizing that it was just her. Fiera used her hand to block the sunlight a bit, trying to see the top of the boulder and how wide it was to compare that with how far she had dug through it.

Fiera couldn't quite see how far the boulder went, but based on what was visible to her she guessed that at the three or four feet she had already carved, she was about three fourths of the way through the boulder. She sighed with relief at the realization of how close she was- the ordeal was nearly over. "Ready to move on, Serkan?" She asked playfully, and the nyssa merely rolled over in response. She snorted, amused, and turned back to her tunnel to keep working. She drove her pick axe with renewed strength, knowing that she was nearly done and that they'd soon be free to explore the rest of the quarry, no matter what it may hold. Rocks showered down with each blow, and the dust admittedly helped in stemming some of the sweat rolling down her arms. It was gross work, but hopefully it would prove fruitful.
