With one final swing, the second boulder split open… revealing a massive purple geode that sparkled in the light from her headlamp. Even Victor walked up to sniff at it curiously, amazed by its lustrous colors. “...Well, damn.” Fiera said, putting her hands on her hips. Now THAT was a find. Of course… it was slightly too big to put in her backpack. She sighed deeply. It looked like she’d be lugging it back up those steps to put it in her mine cart. The humanish bent down to lift one up, and could only barely pick it up, as heavy as it was. “Holy HELL.” She hissed at the effort. Yeah, this was definitely taking two trips. She staggered toward the steps she came from, hoping that Victor was following behind because she could NOT put in the effort to look. She was pretty sure she could hear the click of his nails though.

She finally got to the ledges and natural “stair steps” that led back up to her mine cart, but stepping up each of the smaller ones made her legs burn like she had been running for half an hour. The taller ledges that she had to climb up on, forget it. She just laboriously lifted the geode half up and flopped it over the edge, wincing at the slam it made as it hit the ground again. Then she clambered up onto the ledge and turned around to make sure that Victor was able to follow suit. Sure enough, the rakai sarane was carefully stepping up behind Fiera, watching her placidly as usual. “Okay, cool.” Fiera said, and immediately began to repeat the process with the next step, shoving the geode forward so there was room for her up there too. In this way she was able to slowly but surely get herself, the geode, and Victor up to the uppermost ledge.

With one last monumental burst of strength, she managed to get the geode half into her mine cart before slamming the lid shut again. She bent over, panting but filled with relief… until she remembered she had to go back and get the other one. Fiera groaned loudly before deciding to just push through it. First things first though, she untied Victor from her belt loop and reattached him to the cart. “Stay, Victor.” She ordered. He didn’t need to be told twice, and plopped himself down next to the cart, watching as Fiera hopped back down the steps as quickly as possible. The sooner she could get this done, the better. These geode halves would be worth a lot- them on their own made this whole trip worthwhile. If she could just finish collecting them, then she and her pet could go home and get out of this filthy tunnel already.

The second half was exactly where she left it, lying on the ground surrounded by shards of rock. “Okay, you can do this Ferella… it’s just like hiding a body.” She said, trying to reassure herself that it was a lot like a much easier task she used to do. She hefted her arms under the main bulk, like she was trying to hook her elbows around someone else’s armpits, and lifted up with her knees. The abused joints creaked ominously, but the half did come up, and Fiera quickly toddled back toward the steps, the torch on her mine cart lighting the way. Victor watched, nonplussed, as Fiera did the same song and dance to get up the steps again, tossing the geode half up onto the next shelf before scrambling up it herself, trying to get it off the ground again, and repeating until she was finally at the top again.

By the time Fiera had gotten back to her mine cart for a second time, she was completely exhausted. Even if she WANTED to keep mining by this point, she didn’t think she physically had the strength for it by this point. Heck, if it weren’t for the fact that she KNEW the path down here was smooth and easily navigable, she wasn’t sure she would be able to get her findings back up to surface level again. Still, for now all she had to do was just pull and walk. In fact… Fiera ushered Victor in front of her. “This time, YOU can help pull.” Fiera said, ushering him along. As they started their journey back up to the surface, Victor walked along in front, using his leash to help pull on the mine cart and Fiera stood behind him, tugging the cart as much as her trembling arms could manage.

The cart, of course, took up the caboose, trundling behind Fiera and Victor. What was it going to do otherwise, wander off? The tunnel definitely felt longer coming back than going down, however. Fiera chalked it up to her exhaustion however, and the fact that her mine cart was obviously much heavier than when she had first come down. Victor was doing his best to help though, tugging as hard as he could on the cart, grunting at the effort. With him doing most of the work pulling, Fiera was able to steer it a lot easier, carefully tugging it around corners and up steeper slopes. By the time they entered the main tunnel again, where Fiera had first opened up the hole leading down there, the cart had only barely been bumped. Fiera wouldn’t be surprised if all of the gems in there were sitting exactly where she had left them.

The rest of the way out was a piece of cake by comparison, with Fiera and Victor able to walk side by side. She was proud of Victor. He had been an absolute trooper this whole time, putting up with much more than most pets would, even if he was a little bit grumpy about it. That was par the course for him though, and she could think of far worse ways he could have behaved. He had really come a long way from the wild animal she had first started training all that time ago. It felt like they had a truly special bond now, like he enjoyed her presence beyond the fact that she fed him. And… yeah, it went both ways. If anyone asked Fiera to give him to them, she’d probably spit in their face. Considering she hadn’t felt that way about any living thing for a very long time… well, it was refreshing.

Yes, Fiera and Victor were back at the mines again. In Fiera’s defense, their last mining venture had been VERY successful by her standards. She had found some absolutely gorgeous gems, and even a mind crystal… even though it was too odd a shape to be useful for a node. Despite that though, she was sure that if she went back to that area, they’d find even more goodies to be dug up. Perhaps she could even find some fossils- Fiera’s favorite mining goodie. Victor didn’t seem quite as enthusiastic to be back down here. The rakai sarane didn’t enjoy the dusty, musty air that clogged up his nose, or the dirt that got all over his fur every time they came down here. Still, it seemed to make Fiera happy so he tagged along for her sake. And boy howdy was she in a peppy mood today, practically bouncing down the trail leading underground.

They had an extra goodie with them today as well- a ribbon of telepathy. It was a bright blue color, matching Victor’s fur perfectly. One half of it was wrapped around Victor’s neck in a perfect bow (Fiera insisted that it made him look handsome), and the other half was tied around Fiera’s wrist, tucked up under her sleeve. She didn’t want it to get dirty after all, and she did a lot more working with her hands than Victor did with his neck. It let them hear each other’s thoughts, to a certain degree. Victor was an animal and thus didn’t have the psychological complexity that one could expect from a sapient creature, but what thoughts he did have got the job done. Mostly they communicated in vague feelings, images, and basic impulses and commands that both of them were familiar with. It was quite new to both of them.

Fiera had heard of ribbons of telepathy since she moved here, but this was her first time having bought one. And she… couldn’t say she liked the sensation, honestly. Fiera was a very independent woman, and the idea of being lashed to a creature by the soul, letting someone literally read your mind, was… upsetting. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Victor. He was a dog, what was the worst he could do? Run to a newspaper with her deepest thoughts? She was pretty sure the paper didn’t speak rakai sarane, and even if they did she could probably bribe them well enough by now. No, Fiera was mostly upset by the idea that this was possible at all. If this sort of magical technology was what the labs let the PUBLIC had access to, who knew what they had rattling around in the stygian depths of the main laboratories? Fiera shivered to think of it.

No, Fiera didn’t really like telepathy at all. The idea of being that open with someone was far more than her shriveled little psyche could take, and if that could be used to hurt you? Even worse. So then the reason she was using it today… well, for safety’s sake. She knew that Victor couldn’t use a ribbon to attack her mind, so she figured she was fine using it. Not to mention, conveying directions and status was a lot easier if you could just beam it into someone’s mind instead of using a radio… which Victor wouldn’t know how to operate anyway. The more they could see through each other’s eyes, the quicker they could react to threats and discoveries that the other had made. Or, if one of them was in an area where they could sense their surroundings better than the other, they could use it to navigate.

So while Fiera didn’t like telepathy, the benefits outweighed the drawbacks in this case. So she’d stick with it for now, even if it was uncomfortable. By now, she and Victor were at the mouth of the tunnel in the main area that led down toward where they were mining last time. It was a plenty fruitful area, so Fiera was happy to go to it a second time, even if the rock was so hard it was difficult to chip gems out of. The presence of geodes and gems more than made up for that, especially when the geodes got up to the size of small boulders! She stepped over the threshold, tugging her mine cart along with her. Victor scented the air, no doubt picking up on his old (if very stale) scent from last time. He seemed to relax at that- they were in familiar territory for once.

The trip down was relatively uneventful, but there were a few items of interest. There were a lot more rocks on the ground in comparison to last time, Fiera noted as her mine cart struggled to get over them. The walls seemed smoother too. Was the person who had been working on this tunnel trying to expand it? Fiera had guessed that it was a fae or a kapper that had mined it out last time based on the size, but considering that the ceiling was a foot over her head now she realized that that might not be the case. If someone had been working on this tunnel though, that meant that her own little branch off of it might have been discovered! She picked up the pace, needing to see if her little treasure trove had been plundered or not. Victor trotted after her, looking at her curiously as he picked up on her worry.
