And honestly… she was fine with that. Not all pets were cut out for mining- he was allowed to be uncomfortable with some things. So she’d just take him fishing and to the mansion from now on- she could live with that. At least they had both gotten a good workout. Fiera stretched a bit and picked the lead of the mine cart up again, turning it around before heading back up the tunnel. As expected, it was a lot less pleasant going uphill than it had been going down, but she still had the energy to do so… albeit with Victor encouraging her to keep going this time instead of the other way around. She finally managed to drag the cart up to the connector between the stream tunnel and the worm tunnel, and managed to crouch down and heft it along behind her. A few sticky steps later and she was back in the ransacked room.

From there, it wasn’t hard at all to retrace her steps back up to more familiar and better populated parts of the mines. Victor wagged his tail as a greeting to the people they passed by, but Fiera was so tired that she just stomped right by them, practically shoving her way back up to the surface. Soon though, sweet light poured onto her face, and she could actually feel the air MOVING even if there wasn’t a strict breeze. She took a deep breath, and so did her rakai sarane. It would be a long walk home soon too, but at least from here it was all downhill… and then Fiera could count up her gems properly and take the longest, hottest shower of her life. Even if Victor wasn’t a “shower” kind of pup, she could tell he was thinking of something similar. It had been a long day, but one that she could say was a complete success.

Oh no! The rocks shift and fall on one of your tools, breaking it! Looks like you’ll have to get it fixed before using it again. At least it was the tool, and not you or your pet!

It was fine, bringing a kitten to the mines, right? Fiera had done it a couple times now and no one had given her shit for it… yet. Most people would generally disapprove of bringing a creature as small and vulnerable as a baby tailypo to the mines, but it had worked out well for her so far. Normally they were more than happy to just sit in the cart and watch. Yes, sure, she occasionally had to pull a definitely inedible rock out of their maws, but that had only happened a couple times so far. Tailypo just liked to eat. Daisy appeared no different so far, based on the massive meal that Fiera had fed her beforehand back at the kennels. The yellow baby had practically inhaled her kibble and then attempted to do the same with Fiera’s other tailypo as well, scrambling over to their dishes. Fiera 6 Daisy 0.1/2.1 1

Needless to say, Fiera felt the need to separate her from the group before she caused any major issues. Of course, that meant that Fiera had to PUT her somewhere… so she decided to slip the tailypo into her bag and take her on the little adventure she already had planned for the day. Fiera was originally planning on bringing something a bit beefier and stronger to help deal with the mining critters. Perhaps Margrite, her custom repointe, or Sebros, her fairylike worginu. Either of them would have been ideal for this trip. But no, it was Daisy that ended up catching her eye. It would be Fiera protecting her now. Perhaps that meant that she should try some of the upper level tunnels instead. While the lower tunnels were usually much richer in gems, fossils, and ores, the upper tunnels were less likely to have some of the creatures that lived in the mines.

Not all mines creatures were dangerous. Fiera was pretty sure she could take a karzik in a fight, even if it got the drop on her first. But other ones like the giant tunnel worms… those were a little harder to wrangle. And the last thing she wanted was for one them to think Daisy was the food. So this would have to be a mining session that was… a little lighter on the effort than usual. She supposed she could be ok with that though. As long as she found one or two things to make it worth the effort and Daisy was kept safe, she could be happy with it. And by safe, she meant “not causing trouble” as well, she thought as she shoved the tailypo back into her shirt pocket. It was a convenient spot to keep her- the kitten was just small enough to fit in it comfortably, with only her head and enormous ears poking out.

It was the perfect spot for a nap, and the yellow carnival kitten had slept in there the whole journey here, and was only just now waking up as Fiera entered the mines. The humanish could feel her wiggling as she stretched and looked around. The echoes of people mining and hammering radiated up from below, amplified by the hard stone walls. Even though there were fewer people down here than in the city proper, the echoes made it somehow louder, waking Daisy up. Despite that however, the tailypo didn’t seem to want to get out for now, which Fiera was grateful for. She definitely wanted to get to where she could start mining before letting Daisy down to run around, and they weren’t even in the “grand hall” yet. That probably wasn’t what the area was actually called, but Fiera wasn’t sure what else to call it.

It certainly looked like a grand hall, the humanish noted as she stepped into it. Daisy’s ears flicked every which way as she analyzed all of the new sounds coming to to her, gently slapping Fiera’s shirt in the process. And there was certainly a lot to see as well. The ceiling here was surprisingly high for the mines, dug out from years of mining. Permanent lamps were hammered into the wall, buzzing with electric light and lost moths. Miners crossed every which way across the hall, emerging from or picking out a tunnel to go down. More often than not they had carts and beasts of burden following along behind them, grumbling softly as they rolled across the ground, which was covered in dirt and chunks of rock cast off from the mining process. Every so often, Fiera was able to find a gem or two in this rubble, with it having fallen from someone’s cart.

Normally Fiera would have to bring a gem familiar with her to find anything in all this rubble. Most of the time, it was picked clean by keen eyed miners who didn’t want to give up their spoils, and anything else was lost under the layers of stones. Today was different however as Fiera spotted a flash of off white beneath the rock. “Oh?” She said, mostly to herself. It was definitely a different shade from the surrounding rock. She crouched down to get a better look. Sure enough, it was a fossilized bone. A rare find down here! She glanced surreptitiously to each side- she was amazed that no one else had picked this up yet. These objects were quite expensive. And yet… perhaps it’s unassuming appearance was the exact reason it had been left behind. Perhaps whoever found it didn’t realize what they had found.

Well, finders keepers! It wasn’t Fiera’s fault if everyone else had passed this off as a C.O.D bone. She wished she could say she just snatched it up, but even Fiera knew how delicate these bones could be. Instead, she used her tweezers to gently pick it up from the rocks and place it inside the padded mine cart. There. Now it was safe from being broken. She was just about to close the mine cart entirely and move on however when she felt something… familiar. Like an extra heartbeat in her chest, the echo of some form of power. She knew exactly what it was by now, but she wasn’t expecting to feel it in the front room of the mines! She glanced around- two things this valuable in a row? That seemed unlikely. Almost like a trap. Her well tuned sense of paranoia rose up.

And yet, she couldn’t see anything indicating a trap. She didn’t even know why one would be here. It was public property, after all. Instead, it just seemed to be fantastic luck on her part, and terrible luck on the part of whoever dropped it here. With that matter settled, Fiera quickly shifted aside the rocks and pebbles concealing the elemental crystal. Sure enough it was there, glowing in shades of… purple and blue? She wasn’t going to lie, she wasn’t entirely sure what “element” that was supposed to be. Messed up water? Something like that. She didn’t get any particular impressions from picking it up either, but she did feel the thrumming fade as she made contact with it, returning the world to its baseline. The humanish shrugged. She could always figure out what kind it was later. For now, she was just excited to have it.

Luckily, it looked like no one else had noticed Fiera’s lucky find there. She tucked her chin down and whispered into her tailypo’s ear. “It’ll be our little secret.” She said, punctuating it with a scritch on the head with one of her nails. Daisy meowed in assent. Then she yanked her cart forward again, pulling it toward one of the tunnels she knew led further toward the surface. Most people didn’t use these ones much nowadays. They crisscrossed through the earth like a web, for the most part wrung of all their riches. Fiera was sure she could still find one or two nice things, however. “And I’ll have the cutest little helper in the whole of the mines.” She said to herself, giving Daisy another wink. Sure enough as she pulled her cart into the mouth of the tunnel, the sounds of clanging and lumbering carts faded away.

She was surprised at how quiet it was up here. She shouldn’t be- who wanted to mine in the UPPER tunnels? But it was still pleasant how quiet it was here. After the humanish left the main hall, she couldn’t hear a single beat of a pickaxe or smash of a hammer. It was a shame she’d have to ruin the silence with her own work. Still, she came here to get things done today, and she wasn’t about to go empty handed for the sake of a little silence. Though, she did hope her working didn’t earn her four feet full of claws to the chest. “Maybe I should get you situated first…” Fiera offered to Daisy. She popped open her mine cart, as of yet pretty empty. Then she gently placed the tailypo in it, nestling her into the floor like a baby in a crib.

A very wiggly baby in a crib. Fiera could tell already that Daisy wasn’t going to stay put. Whether she was awake enough to want to explore or whether she wanted to nap in Fiera’s shirt pocket again, she couldn’t say. Regardless, the young kitten was immediately off like a shot when Fiera let go of her, trying to scale the walls of the mine cart. Luckily those walls were too high and Daisy too weak to make a success out of it, but Fiera kept a close eye on her regardless. Perhaps the noises of her mining would get the carnival tailypo to want to settle down a bit. With that in mind, Fiera dropped her pack on the ground next to the mine cart and looked around. She was in a relatively narrow tunnel, far from any other activity. It was as good a place to start mining as any.
