Out of the corner of her eye she saw it; a glimmer of pink. She turned her head over her shoulder to look- only for Viridia to rush in and snatch whatever it was away. "Hey!" Fiera cried, rushing after the gem familiar. "Drop it!" She demanded, but Viridia only growled at her and slithered away, retreating under a pile of rubble. Man, Fiera was really wishing she had trained this thing at all. "Don't eat that! It's mine!" She cried, shoving an arm into the pile. She thought she felt the wyrm for a second, only for it to retreat further. "Oh come ON!" She groaned, shoving both arms in. Eventually, she dragged Viridia out, writhing and growling quietly. "Let me see what you have." Fiera said, slowly moving her hands up the familiar, one over the other. Finally, she reached the head, and went to pry open Viridia's jaws.

A small pink gem fell out from Viridia's shimmering fangs, clattering to the cave floor. Fiera went to snatch it up, only for the familiar to clamp down on her remaining hand. She squeaked in pain and drew her arm back suddenly, making the wyrm release. "You little... ergh!" She groaned, holding her hand. First a rock landed on her foot, now this? She'd be just littered with bruises by the end of the day! She checked the bite carefully. At least Viridia hadn't broken skin, and it was only on the finger tips, but it still stung. She was just getting all sorts of beat up. Still, at least she had managed to get a gem out of it...right? She got out the crystal. It was longer than the other two she had found, and a pretty, pale pink color. She smiled. That would look nice in somebody's necklace.

"You're lucky I got this away from you." Fiera said smugly at Viridia, still curled up in the corner. The gem wyrm familiar looked as if she were fuming with anger- if there was one thing Fiera had learned on this trip, it was that Viridia HATED having her snacks taken away. "It could really be worth something!" Fiera continued, tossing the jewel up and catching it again. Viridia's head moved to follow the movement- so she WAS watching. "If you had eaten it, that would have been a real shame!" She finished, but began going through her bag. "But since it's so much better than the last one you found..." She said, digging toward the bottom. "You can have THIS one back!" She drew out the river pebble from before. It was, functionally, just a rock, but Viridia had adored it for whatever reason. Viridia's head perked up at its appearance.

Fiera rolled it around in her palm before she tossed it underhand at the familiar, and Viridia rushed up, faster than Fiera could blink. A moment later, Viridia clattered to the ground, happily teething on the rock. Fiera didn't even know if she actually ATE rocks, or if she just really liked chewing on them for whatever reason. Fiera certainly couldn't say. Still, at least the clever trade seemed to have worked. Both of them had gotten what they wanted. Viridia got something to chew on, and Fiera got another gemstone. Everything turned out ok, and now Fiera could go back to work. She picked up her things from where she had dropped them, and fumbled them back into her back. Yeesh, she was really making a mess. Not just of the tunnel- that was to be expected of a mine- but even keeping her own things straight was proving to be a task.

She was lucky she had wrapped those mushrooms up earlier- and her sandwiches that she packed for lunch, for that matter. They'd probably be smashed to bits in there otherwise, and she knew if that happened she'd be kicking herself after she left the mines for the day. Actually... she went and checked to make sure that they were ok right now. Just to be safe. After reassuring herself, she picked her pickaxe back up and returned to the wall. Back to work, she supposed, passing Viridia on the way there. A heft over her shoulders again, and she began chipping pieces of the wall away once more. The repetitive sound of metal on stone was quickly becoming almost comforting, like a noise machine. As she worked, Fiera noticed that something was changing about the stone. She couldn't quite place it, but it was something about the texture? The color? Both, perhaps?

Fiera noticed something else in the rocks at her feet. Vitoria didn’t respond, but it still gleamed. How odd, the gem familiar was normally on gems like a dog on a bone. She leaned down and snatched it up. It was still mostly coated in rock she noted, dropping her pick. Instead, she picked up her chisel and began to work, carefully tapping away pebbles. What remained afterward was an opalescent lump. She ran it over in her hands. It was cool... metal, then? The color indicated copper. How interesting. She supposed that explained the change in the color of the cave walls. She had struck a copper vein! She put it in her bag, safe among the other gemstones. Not quite what she was looking for, but she’d certainly take it! Metals were just as valuable as gems, if not more so. That was certainly the case back home.

After sorting the copper lump into her bag, Fiera picked up her pickaxe once more. Her fortunes were finally looking up on this trip. Whether it was her equipment being better, her choice of cave being improved, or just plain dumb luck, she was making more progress than ever before. Chips flew off the wall and whistling song filled the air. Even though the work was hard, her hands and feet hurt, and she was covered in god knows how much dirt, she didn’t actually mind that much anymore. It appeared that her bratty personality could be put on pause so long as she got enough shinies to placate her. She didn’t even need company- frankly, Viridia hadnt been too much help, and she had always been a bit of a loner. Having to leave her home town hurt, but at least Fiera was used to being alone.

Work was going quickly. Fiera found herself having to move piles of her own chippings just to keep going. She wondered if she’d end up having to go far enough to warrant placing more lanterns. Wouldn’t that be a sight to see. She looked back over her shoulder- she wasn’t that far yet. She had made maybe a 3 foot hole, not even fully reaching the top or bottom of the tunnel. She could keep working on this spot for quite a while. Hopefully, she’d find lots of goodies in that time too. She stopped for a moment as she thought, wiping her brow and then got back to work, hammering away. Pickaxing away? She wasn’t entirely sure of the etymology of that, but she was at least fifty percent sure “pickaxing” wasn’t a real word. Well, she’d look it up later regardless.

Finally, Fiera felt something shift in the wall. Something about the texture, the composition. Plunging her pickaxe into it just didn’t feel the same. She began to work faster, smiling. Maybe she was on the cusp of another breakthrough! One last blow, and her pickaxe sailed through the stone- into empty space. Fiera looked at the hole she had made cautiously, peeking in like it was going to bite her. It was only about an inch by two inches wide and tall, but it was pitch black inside. She placed her hand over it, and felt a cool breeze. Viridia raised her head. “...Huh.” Fiera said. “A breakthrough indeed!” On one hand, this could be a good thing- the hole was made for her, and she could just grab anything on the walls inside. It was also guaranteed to be untouched by other miners. But on the other hand, she didn’t have a flashlight or lantern.

Without light, it would be nearly impossible for her to see anything in there, let alone anything of value. Not to mention the danger of just tripping on something and twisting an ankle, or breaking a rib, or cracking her head. She sighed. Well, there was no point in mulling it over for TOO long. Time to open it up. She aimed her pickaxe right at the hole. One inch became two, became three. Soon she was back at her old pace, but instead of trying to make the hole deeper, she was making it wider. Viridia seemed particularly interested, putting her face in the breeze produce by the hole. “Smell anything good?” Fiera asked, amused. She wasn’t sure if gem familiars had a sense of smell, but she figured they had to find gems somehow. What else were they supposed to do, use psychic powers?

An emerald dragon sniffed around on the ground for a moment as it came around the corner. It froze when seeing the woman and her familiar, hoping it wouldn't be seen just yet.

Fiera took a break to wipe her brow- not that her sleeves were that much drier. She thought she heard a noise, but that meant little at first- there was always some form of shifting rock down here. Then she noticed Viridia- the gem wyrm was normally sniffing around and investigating the piles of stones around them. Now though, she was staring straight back the way they came, frozen in place. Fiera traced her gaze back to where Viridia was looking, and nearly gasped in surprise. There at the other end of the tunnel, maybe 15 feet away, was a small dragon, made of the same sparkling crystal as Viridia. Fiera’s first thought- “Don’t scare it.” She moved slowly and deliberately, trying to not look directly at it, and went to her bag, unzipping it. She had two things that might help in there- her gemstones from earlier and her BLT sandwich. She wasn’t actually sure what these things ate, so she slowly pulled out both.

The dragon froze as it noticed it was spotted. What could it do? It could turn and run, but something compelled it to take a step forward to see what the woman was pulling from her pockets.

The dragon certainly COULD run-Fiera wasn't sure she could stop it- but she was really hoping it wouldn't. She glanced down to her left as Viridia finally moved- hiding behind her, it would appear. Guess gem wyrms weren't exactly on the top of the food chain down here. Fiera was perfectly fine with that. The less this gem dragon was bothered, the better. She squatted down, trying to make herself look small. She wasn't sure how well it worked, considering how big her tail was poofed up from excitement (With Viridia now hiding in it), but hopefully it would get the idea across. She finally spoke, quietly and sweetly. "Hey there... you want uh... you want a sandwich?" Not her most convincing argument but whatever, she didn't think gem dragons spoke english anyway. She held out the sandwich carefully, with the pink topaz gem from earlier settled on top. Hopefully it would be interested in one of the two.
