Once they had finished playing, Fiera gently hooked Sundown back up to his leash, letting the houluh shake his head to get it adjusted before picking it up and starting to lead him out of the park. They had had a rather productive day overall, even if she hadn’t actually taught him all that much. Just one trick, in fact! Still, it was an important skill to have if his debutante show was to go well. He was walking nicely next to her now, not pulling too hard or lagging behind too much. She supposed she had worn him out a little practicing all of his tricks in a row like that a million times. Apparently not enough to exhaust him though, considering he was keeping good pace. He just seemed… perfect. And if there was one thing Fiera strived for in her training and contests, it was perfection.

She could just imagine his debutante show now, the bright lights, the discerning judges, the gorgeous houluh. Sundown looked nice now, but she could see him being absolutely perfect on the day of his show. Of course, she’d have to get him all gussied up and groomed first. She had already arranged the appointment with the groomer. He was pretty good with them normally- thankfully she had taught him to be ok with people touching him and his body and as a result didn’t really mind when they had to lift his tail to trim the fur or hold his paws to clip his claws, or peel back gums to brush his (quite sharp for his age) teeth. He always got back “high marks” whenever he came back from the groomer or the vet. Of course, it alwayshelped that he was just a naturally sweet pup toward people, if a little full of himself.

Still, that personality “flaw” (which Fiera couldn’t exactly disagree with- he was gorgeous, after all. She had bred him that way!) was easily ignored in favor of his body… which led Fiera to get on her next train of thought. After his debutante show he would (if it went well) get his stamp of approval to be bred. Fiera… admittedly had no clue who she wanted to breed him with. She hadn’t taken a look at the suite of other houluh that were available from other kennels to breed with right now, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to spring for a salonne show first in order to try and get him to produce more blessed offspring as well. She knew that the more specialized and heavily bred a houluh was, the less offspring they would end up producing in the end, so she wasn’t sure how many breedings Sundown actually had in him.

That meant that she would have to be quite discerning about the matronne she’d eventually pair him up with, that was for sure. She always was careful about her breedings of course, but it seemed to be a different matter entirely when you knew that you really didn’t have the wiggle room to mess up. Not that she would consider a litter of healthy pups a “mistake” but… as a woman of fashion, Fiera DID have her own personal tastes and would like to see Sundown’s pups take after him. He came out so well after all, it would be a shame to see none of his unique markings and colorations passed down. Unfortunately, Fiera didn’t know a lick of genetics so she mostly had to play things by ear- or by eye, as it were. Still, she was sure she would end up picking him an excellent mate, provided that the other kennels of the Labs City cooperated.

For now though, she was happy for him to just be a puppy. After all, they still had at least two weeks before his show. That left him plenty of time to just run around and play with the rest of his “pack”. She was sure that that would give him some good rest before they had to get to work for real. “You ready to go home?” She asked nonchalantly as they strolled down the path out of the park. Sundown tilted his head in confusion, but not unhappily. He trusted her, no matter where they were going. No matter what happened, they would be going to do it together. Fiera chuckled and turned forward again, leading him back into the city proper. “Yeah, that’s what I thought.” She said as they made their way back to the kennels, happy to have another day of training out of the way.

The public park wasn’t an unusual place to bring most pets, though Fiera still stuck out a bit due to the rarity of hers… and how unhappy he looked to be there. Harachiu weren’t the most common sight nowadays, with many having flown off to who knew where after the initial rush (or so Fiera had heard), leaving only a couple left in the labs city. And Fiera had to own the most hardheaded out of all of them. Admittedly she and Icarus had seemed to have come to an understanding and now he at least wasn’t running off every time she glanced away, but it was still a little annoying for her to deal with him constantly huffing and puffing and refusing to do things out of spite. And definitely not because it was familiar to her, no siree. With any luck though, he’d calm down a bit in their training session today. Fiera 1 Icarus 6.1/6.1 Name 1

Harachiu were usually pretty grumpy starting out, Fiera had noticed. She had the feelinng it had a lot to do with the fact that they were fully sapient creatures without an actual leg to stand on legally, and most of the time people didn’t even bother teaching them to communicate. Once they were given a few tools to work with in terms of communication, they usually tended to open up to her. Usually. Still, it was time to see if that would work with Icarus. She glanced over her shoulder at the harachiu who was still stomping along behind her, his wings folded behind him. “Hey, Icarus!” She said nonchalantly. The harachiu didn’t look up at her, instead opting to kick a rock as hard as he could, sending it skittering only a couple of inches away. He sighed loudly and stomped after it, ready to give it an even harder kick.

“Icarus!” She called again, even louder this time. The harachiu glanced up at her, mid-windup, surprised by the sudden noise. Well, he might not know it was his name yet, but they’d get there. “Good job!” She said, and tossed him a raisin out of the trail mix she had been snacking on during their trek. He caught it awkwardly, almost fumbling it onto the ground. He looked between the fruit and Fiera for a moment, suspicious… before shoving it into his mouth. Yeah, she had the feeling it was going to go that way. She turned back to walk again and Icarus trekked after her curiously, now focused on what this weird human was trying to do now. It was clear she had SOME sort of gambit. She kept glancing over her shoulder after all, making sure he was still there. Did she still not trust him after all this?

...That was probably fair, to be honest. He did spend a LOT of time trying to get away. “Icarus!” Fiera called again. There was that weird word again. He squinted as he thought. This lady used it a LOT around him and- ow, that raisin hit him right on the head. He managed to catch it and shove it in his mouth before it fell on the ground, but not without a LITTLE bit of resentment. Ok, so him reacting to the word was definitely important, but why? She seemed plenty smug over it. They started walking again, but Fiera kept glancing back over her shoulder at him. Eventually Icarus decided to try mimicking it back at her- maybe it would do something? “Eek-aroos.” The harachiu squeaked at her, fumbling over the syllables like a bar of soap. Fiera stopped and grinned before poking a finger into his tiny chest.

“No no- YOU’RE Icarus.” She said carefully. “I. Ca. Rus.” She said, poking his chest rhythmically with each syllable. He stared at her gobsmacked for a few moments before something finally seemed to click. She was talking about HIM? That was… hm. Well. He had to admit, it wasn’t like he knew any OTHER words referring to him. Might as well go with whatever was given to him. He pointed at himself sharply. “Eekarus.” He said plainly. Fiera giggled and clapped a bit before handing him another raisin- more politely this time. He took it more graciously than before and chewed thoughtfully as they started walking again. Icarus, huh? He could get used to that. And this raising was as much of a confirmation of it as anything else. This day was turning out pretty weird for him so far… but he had to admit, he was interested in where they were going with it.

While they were still looking for a spot for Fiera to rest her bags so to speak, she figured she could teach Icarus another quick trick. At the very least she could offload some of these berries she had been lugging around. She had plenty of blueberries with her in a box she carried under one arm. Most of her harachiu went nuts for blueberries, making them a useful treat for training them. Icarus seemed to resent most usual methods of training however, so she wasn’t sure if he would accept the berries or just be offended at the thought of being bribed into performing. She would just have to try it and see. Opening the box, she took out a blueberry and held it so Icarus could see the fruit, and even she noticed how his eyes lit up as she held it out before popping it in her mouth.

Perhaps this would be easier than she thought after all. So, the trick: come. An easy enough trick for most critters to learn, and would probably help in keeping Icarus from wandering off, provided she could get him to obey long enough to actually teach it to him. Not to mention it would help with the next trick she had in mind as well… but first things first. She stopped in the path and looked at him as he followed her. He eyed her suspiciously, but didn’t stop moving. They had been traveling along this path for a while, why would they suddenly stop now? “Come here, Icarus!” She said enthusiastically as he walked and sure enough he soon caught up to her, most likely with every intention of passing her by. Fiera didn’t let him however, and instead shoved a berry at him, practically forcing it into his hands.

“Good job, Icarus! Good come!” She said, clapping her hands slightly before standing up and walking down the path again. Icarus stared at her, dumbfounded before looking down at his berry. Normally he would have rejected this… maybe thrown it at her face if he was feeling particularly saucy… but she had praised him and walked away before he could even begin to react, so… Even though Fiera wasn’t watching him, she could still hear the quiet sounds of Icarus chewing on the berry. Perfect. After a dozen or so more feet (a decent distance for a critter his size) she turned around again. “Icarus, come here!” She said, repeating the command. This time the harachiu seemed ready for it and stopped, giving her a weird look again. Fiera sighed a bit, hoping he wouldn’t stop, but gave it one more try. “Icarus, come!” She said again, a bit more insistently.

Eventually the harachiu sighed loudly and plodded over to her, stomping his feet the whole way. When he reached her, he stopped and made a gesture that said “Is this it? That’s what you wanted?” It was of course, so Fiera immediately leaned down to hand him another blueberry. “Good come, Icarus!” She said politely as her issen harachiu not so-politely- snatched the berry from her hand, shoving the whole thing into his mouth at once. “Oh, ew. I- jeez, chew first Icarus! Dang.” She said as he ate, but after a few minutes where she was quite worried he’d choke, he was finally ready. With that out of the way, Fiera started walking again… in the opposite direction. This definitely wasn’t where they were going, but hopefully it would work as a final test to see if he understood “come”. He looked at her incredulously as she stopped about ten feet away.

Then he glanced back down the other way, where they were SUPPOSED to be going. He pointed at it hesistantly, but Fiera only patted her thighs with both hands. “Okay, come here Icarus!” She said insistently. The harachiu glanced back and forth a couple times, his brow furrowed, before sighing and walking over to Fiera. “Thatta boy!” She said, delighted. She offered him a few more blueberries but he was finally upset enough by now that he denied them, pushing Fiera’s hand away. “Oh, fine then. I guess your reward can be getting where we’re going, then!” She said, and started walking down the path in the correct direction once more. Icarus sighed with relief- apparently that’s what he wanted after all. Just five minutes of Fiera not bothering him. He ran to catch up and after that they were off, strolling through the public park, with one more feather for Icarus’s cap to show for it.
