The next (and last) trick she wanted to teach Hellebore was the knowledge of his own name. It should be easy enough- it was the starter trick for the grand majority of her pets after all. And she still had plenty of those soft meat treats she was using to reward Hellebore for desired behavior. This should be a walk in the park- literally, she supposed, as they were in the public park. The humanish shuffled up against the wall a bit more, adjusting herself so she was comfy. Then she set Hellebore down again, letting him wander around and do his own thing. He had to stop paying attention to her to start off with so she could call his name to recapture it, after all. Just as predicted, within a few minutes he was rolling around on the ground, batting a small pebble as if it were a piece of prey.

With Hellebore sufficiently distracted, Fiera could begin. “Hellebore!” She said, calling the name that the kit had heard plenty of times by now but never had any reason to respond to. Now was no different as the witchcraft tailypo did his level best to death kick the pebble, only really succeeding in making g a few scratchy noises. “Oh, come on. Hellebore!” Fiera tried again, grumbling to herself before letting her voice become honey sweet again. Hellebore continued to not notice her however. Fiera was pretty much always taking, as many of her acquaintances knew already. By this point, all of her words blurred together into one big, easily ignored mess for Hellebore, resulting in him not paying any particular attention to any one thing the humanish was saying. Fiera huffed. It looked like she would have to try a little harder in order to get her young pet’s attention.

Fiera sighed deeply before breathing in once more. “Hellebore!” She snapped, a bit sharper in tone than last time. She wasn’t trying to scold the tailypo, but if that was the only way to get him to listen up... Just as she expected however, Hellebore practically leapt out of his skin, snapping to attention. “That’s it, good boy Hellebore!” Fiera said again, her voice melting back into honeyed praise. To sweeten the pot for him as well, Fiera held out a treat for the tailypo. He walked towards her slowly at first, perhaps still a little suspicious of her sudden swing of mood, but couldn’t resist sprinting the rest of the way when he smelled the tantalizing bouquet of meats in the treat she was offering. Soon he was skidding to a stop in front of her and the treat vanished from her fingers as he snapped it up.

Now that Hellebore seemed a little more engaged, Fiera decided to try again. Once the treat was gone and swallowed, Fiera leaned forward again. “Hellebore.” She said firmly but not cruelly, and the tailypo continued to tap and various pieces of rubble under the overhang they were sitting in. Fiera resisted the urge to sigh and tried again. “Hellebore!” She reiterated, and this time the kitten did look over at her. It was barely a glance, but it was enough for Fiera to consider it a success. “Good job, Hellebore!” She said eagerly, and tossed him another treat. He ate that one even more quickly, and looked up at Fiera with curious eyes. Now he was really interested. Still, she waited to try again until he had stopped paying attention to her and went back to playing again. “Hellebore!” She called once more, eagerly awaiting the witchcraft tailypo’s response.

To her delight he looked up after only a bit of hesitation, tilting his head at her curiously. “Oh, good job!” She said happily and threw him some more food. She kept going after that, giving him some time to lose interest before calling his name again. Each time, he responded more and more quickly to her great satisfaction. She even tried saying a few other words as well, to see if he was responding to his name or just to Fiera talking in general. Sure enough though, he only stopped his playing to respond to “Hellebore” and nothing else. After a good while, Fiera decided that she was satisfied with his progress. His name had been well and truly learned. With that out of the way however, they were finished. Fiera sighed happily and pushed herself up off of the ground before scooping her pet up and returning him to his basket. Finally, they could get out of the cold.

How was it still so cold? It was March, for crying out loud! Fiera was shivering in the training park, wearing a shimmery iridescent puffer coat and some fuzzy earmuffs, along with some nice white gloves. After a certain amount of time though, she felt like she might as well have been wearing nothing at all in the frigid early spring weather. The sun was shining brightly, and yet it might as well have not been there at all for the warmth it was putting down upon her. Donner, her snowtracker seeker however, seemed just fine with the weather, sniffing curiously at the dead grass as they took their place in a fenced off training area. “I’m glad YOU’RE enjoying yourself.” Fiera muttered as she set her bag down and briefly checked it out to make sure she had all her training equipment for the day on her. She didn’t intend to be out too long- she didn’t think her cold tolerance would let her. This was more intended as a very brief training session to teach Donner a couple of fighting moves before she took him back to the training gym. She really had to get going on his tournament training- the Winter Wonderbrawl was coming up fast- but he had been surprisingly cooperative so far. Seekers liked learning how to enact violent better, who would have guessed. And she supposed he must have been quite enjoying the weather while it lasted, even though it had been getting slightly warmer as of late. Still, it was cool and comfortable enough for Donner to train continuously without overheating in his shaggy coat, and that was what mattered. Luckily, she had found a new treat for him- fresh jerky, which was just as appealing to him without requiring Fiera to get covered in meat juices.

This would do well to help Fiera in teaching Donner his first move of the day- Rend. He had massive claws on his feet, ideal for ripping open opponents, and by god was she going to teach him how to use them. Thankfully he had a tendency to explore with them on his own, using them to dig under snow and turn over stones, do it shouldn’t be too hard to teach him to deal damage with them. The training area they were in had a lot of tools to assist with that as well, whether they were left there by previous trainers or for public use to start with. There was even a large tree branch leaned up against the fence, for goodness’ sake. Although... the longer she looked at it for, the more it made sense to use it for this. Cats used trees to sharpen their claws all the time- who was to say seekers wouldn’t too?

She hefted up the stick and held it in front of her, glad that she could keep it far enough away that her seeker would strike the branch and not her face on accident. It was still entirely covered in bark too, which would be useful in determining how much “oomph” the seeker was putting into his blows. With this branch and her treats, Fiera figured she had everything she needed to get this training session started. So, she turned to her snowtracker. “Alright Donner, come here.” She said. Dinner immediately began hissing at her as she approached, but the humanish just rolled her eyes. “Oh, come off it. We both know you’re out of your “spontaneous biting” stage.” She hoped. While the hissing increased in volume however, Donner didn’t actually do anything as Fiera kneeled down in front of him before reaching out to grab one of his forepaws.

He continued to hiss as Fiera gently splayed his toes, and the humanish was glad she had already trained him to tolerate her touch. Mostly. Then she scraped his claws against the wood as hard as she dared (which wasn’t very) letting him feel the texture of it under his claws. “Rend, Donner!” She said as she did it, setting the command word for this particular attack. She did it a couple of times, repeating the command and action to try and embed it in his mind until finally Donner pulled his paw back. “Good job, Donner! Good rend!” She praised, and dug around in her coat pocket for a piece of jerky. That made the seeker perk up- he was a lot more interested in obeying Fiera’s commands when he was getting paid for it. She happily fed him a strip or two as a reward for good behavior.

It took him a moment to choke down the jerky but once he did, Donner was ready to go again. “Ok Donner, let’s-“ Fiera said, reaching for his paw, only for Donner to pull away, waving his foot around if just to get Fiera to stop grabbing at it. In doing so however, he (probably accidentally) swatted his foot against the branch. It was barely a scratch- he hadn’t even taken any of the bark off- but it was technically an act of striking it by his own free will, so Fiera decided to reward him for it. “Oh good rend, Donner!” She said in a pleased tone of voice and quickly tossed him another piece of jerky. Donner seemed briefly baffled, but still lunged out to scoop up the jerky in one swoop. He wasn’t the sort to let things he wanted pass on by... even if he didn’t quite understand why they were there.

Fiera smirked- she was pretty sure she had caught his attention now. Even if he didn’t know what he was doing, he was sure as sugar going to figure it out so he could get as much food as possible. “Ready to try again, Donner?” Fiera asked rhetorically while picking up the branch again. It didn’t actually matter if he was ready or not- she was coming for him anyway. She held the branch up and gave the command. “Rend, Donner!” The seeker lifted his paw (Ok good, step one complete, Fiera mused) and waved it around emphatically... several inches from the branch. “Come on, Rend!” Fiera repeated, determined to not give him treats until he actually hit the darn thing. This just made the seeker more frustrated, though. He WAS doing it... right? Maybe if he did it harder? So instead he began waving his leg around even faster.

Fiera took that opportunity to thrust the branch forward, allowing him to strike it. On his next downward stroke, he landed a blow on the branch, cleaving off some of the bark and nearly knocking it out of Fiera’s hands, even though she had been expecting the hit. “Now that’s more like it!” She exclaimed, resisting the urge to ruffle his fur. He didn’t like pets, and it was difficult for her to respect that. Still, she got out another piece of jerky for him. “Good rend, Donner!” She said, letting the seeker claim his prize. His tail twitched slightly and she heard him make a short chuffing noise- a rare sign of approval from him. Her own lip quirked up in turn. Good! She was hoping that would be the case. Now all she had to do was get him to do that consistently and with force.

When Donner finished his jerky, licking his chops, he stared at Fiera intensely. She took that as a sign that he was ready to try again and readied the stick again, holding it at arm’s length in front of her. “Ok Donner- rend!” She commanded and to her delight, the seeker actually responded. He lashed out with his front leg, slashing at the branch. Fiera flinched at the sound, and felt chunks of bark bounce off her cheeks. When she finally cracked an eyelid, she found a significant gash in the wood. “Excellent rend, Donner!” She praised as she fed him again, leaving an unsaid “but I know you can do better.” She tried that again a few more times, watching as he increased in speed and accuracy, and the branch got more and more beat up, looking like some sort of sadistic cat’s scratching post toward the end.

Finally, the humanish decided to give it one more try. “Ok Donner- rend!” She said, bracing herself while holding out the branch, no longer needing to get on her pet’s level. The seeker growled softly before lashing out with a mighty screech. His claws flashed almost faster than Fiera could see, her only warning being the glint of light off of them sparking in her eye before the impact hit, a loud cracking noise reverberating through the training park. Fiera found herself unwittingly wincing, and when she looked back she saw what the loud noise was- the large branch had finally been snapped right in two from the force of the blow. She couldn’t help but laugh, thoroughly impressed. “Yeah, that’ll do it!” She said while getting out the treats. “Good rend, bud. Here, you’ve earned it.” She said, tossing the jerky to her pet. Donner slapped it right out of the air to grab it- apparently still in a “hitting” frame of mind.
