Fiera was back in the park with Desiree, her haraichu. The sun was high, but the weather was pleasantly balmy, with only a light breeze. She wasn’t too far from the city proper, and the sounds of traffic could still be heard through the trees. For the time being though, they were left in peace, sitting in a small clearing. Fiera had decided to teach the young pixie a couple of messenger related tricks- the command to hold an item, to drop it, to get an item, and to come back with it. Being so intelligent, she would take to it easily, or so the humanish hoped. She had a nice box of blueberries sitting in her bag, ready to eat, and Desiree seemed to be in a good mood, standing on a rock and closing her eyes against the breeze. Overall, things seemed peaceful and pleasant, a perfect environment for learning.

The first trick on her list was to teach Desiree to go to a specific location. Multiple locations could be taught, but she knew that the haraichu had to start somewhere. Fiera considered teaching Desiree to go to her on command- granted, it was very similar to ‘come’, but could hopefully be used even when Fiera wasn’t immediately visible. Unfortunately, Desiree didn’t yet know how to fly, so canvassing a large area for her owner wasn’t an option. Fiera hoped she could get the idea across regardless, keeping it a separate concept from ‘come’. Knowing that there was no time like the present to get started, Fiera called Desiree over, beckoning her with an arm. “Ok, Desiree.” She said once the young fairy had approached. “Let’s get started.” She pointed to herself. “Fiera. This is Fiera.” Desiree tilted her head with confusion. To clarify, Fiera pointed at Desiree. “Desiree.” She said, before pointing to herself. “Fiera.”

The haraichu opened her own mouth, and mirrored Fiera’s action right back at her. “Fiera!” The fairy said, in a high pitched and untrained voice. Fiera’s face blossomed into a smile at how Desiree was starting to learn words. “Yes, good job!” She said, but her facial expression was all that was really needed to get across the point that Desiree had gotten it right. Then, she got out a couple of polaroids she had printed out. Desiree was highly intelligent- she’d recognize that what was depicted on them was a representation of something Fiera wanted, as opposed to just a piece of paper. She set several of them down around her- one had a picture of a fountain on it. Another, the lake by the labs. The entrance of the public park. A couple more like this, but the final one was a picture of Fiera- albeit airbrushed to perfection, wearing a very expensive outfit.

Desiree watched the humanish as she set these photos out. “Ok Desiree.” She said, holding up a blueberry before setting it next to the picture of Fiera. “Go to Fiera!” She said, standing back. Desiree looked at her… and stood up, walking over to the photo before shoving the blueberry in her mouth. Fiera clapped and put on her happiest voice. “Good job! Go to Fiera!” While Desiree chewed, Fiera moved the pictures around, placing them in a different order, still several feet away from each other. She moved down the number of treats this time, placing just one slice of a berry next to her photo. She backed up again, holding up a finger to indicate that Desiree shouldn’t go quite yet. “Ok, and… go to Fiera!” She said, waving her hand with a flourish. Desiree looked at her, unimpressed, and plodded over to the picture of Fiera again, and claimed her prize.

Fine, fine, perhaps this was a little too easy for her. Fiera tried again, with the pictures in all different configurations, lowering the number of treats to nothing. Each time, Desiree successfully identified the correct photo and went to it, clearly finding it boring. Finally, Fiera gathered the photos up and put them away. Desiree looked at her, but didn’t seem interested at all. Did this mean they were done? Fiera then turned to her haraichu again. “Ok Desiree… go to Fiera!” She said. Desiree looked around.. The photos were gone now. Where did Fiera want her to go? “Go to Fiera!” She repeated, and suddenly something seemed to click. Fiera chuckled as Desiree dragged herself over to Fiera herself, putting a tiny hand on Fiera’s pant leg. Fiera chuckled, and ruffled her head. “Good job, Desiree.” She tried the trick a few more times- hiding behind a tree, standing far away, but each time she gave the order, Desiree came on over. Even if it was with a teenage sense of huffiness, it looked like she had the idea down pat.

The next messenger tricks Fiera had in mind were twins of each other- hold and drop. She didn’t think the pair would be be difficult to teach Desiree at all, but obviously they were of great importance to a messenger. You couldn’t deliver a message if your mailcreature didn’t know to pick it up, after all! Furthermore, Fiera could see other uses for Desiree knowing the word ‘hold’, such as if Fiera just needed to pass something off to her for a moment. It was almost too easy for someone of Desiree’s intelligence, but if worst came to worst, the haraichu would learn a new word today. Fiera could think of worse fates. For now, Desiree was exploring the surrounding area, looking in nooks and crannies for anything interesting with that childish sense of curiosity that Fiera had come to love about her. It certainly made teaching her things a lot easier.

She had a couple of objects to get Desiree to hold. None of them were too big- this wasn’t strength training after all. She just wanted to be sure that Desiree knew that ‘hold’ meant to hold any object she was handed regardless of its size, shape or weight, instead of going and picking up a specific object (which was a different trick entirely). Most of the objects were just ones she had scrounged up from the area they were training in. There was a pebble, a larger chunk of rock (or was it concrete?), a stick, a folded piece of paper, and one of Fiera’s endless bracelets. Desiree did admittedly give Fiera a weird look as the humanish collected these, but chances are the haraichu just passed it off as another quirk of her owner. Besides, she’d know what they were for soon enough. Fiera stood up and brushed her hands off, looking at her collection with pride.

“Desiree, come here!” The humanish chirped, beckoning the young pixie over. It didn’t take long for her to respond, seeing as she was already somewhat curious about Fiera’s intentions with the objects anyway. Fiera squatted down when she arrived and picked up the simplest one, the pebble. She put it in her hand, palm up. “Ok Desiree, hold!” She said. The haraichu just looked at her awkwardly. Fiera was hoping she would have taken it of her own free will, but it would appear that Desiree wasn’t interested in taking anything from Fiera that wasn’t a tasty blueberry or some other delicious treat. Fiera sighed, and reached out toward Desiree. The haraichu shied away, but Fiera reassured her, gently taking both tiny hands in her comparatively huge one. Desiree squirmed awkwardly, but Fiera shushed her a couple more times. “Ok, hold this.” She said, tipping the pebble into Desiree’s hand.

She gently closed Desiree’s hands around the small pebble, and left her like that for a moment. Desiree just stared at her awkwardly, with a facial expression that screamed “Dude. What’s the point of this.” Despite the haraichu’s withering glare, Fiera let her sit there for a few moments before saying “Good job, Desiree! Good hold!” while clapping gently. Then, she went to prise the pebble out of Desiree’s hand again- only for her to toss the pebble into Fiera’s incoming hand before she could do so. Fiera snorted, but swapped it out with a blueberry, which raised Desiree’s mood significantly. The haraichu took it from the cat woman eagerly, tearing into its sweet flesh. If there was one thing Desiree was motivated by when training, it was food. Fiera decided that that would be the only treat she’d get for this trick, however- it wasn’t exactly difficult to learn.

From there, Fiera moved on to the other objects. “Ok Desiree, hold.” She said, offering her the larger rock. Desiree just looked at Fiera. “Come on, hold!” She said, waggling the rock. Desiree rolled her eyes and took the rock. Her face implied “Ok, is this what you want? Am I doing it right?” Fiera was quick to praise her and release her from the trick- judging from how badly Desiree’s arms were trembling, it looked as if Fiera had underestimated how heavy that rock was. After that, it was easy. Desiree took every object and held it until Fiera commanded, and after that did what she pleased with it. Fiera cringed a bit when she took the opportunity to rip the paper into shreds- the humanish was glad she had brought multiple sheets, because she wasn’t getting that one back. Still, it was a complete success overall. Desiree had been asked to hold, and hold she did.

That left, of course, drop, the opposite of hold. Hold had been tear sheddingly boring for Desiree, and Fiera suspected that drop would be about the same. Still, at least that meant that they could rush through it quickly. She was sure Desiree wanted to have some time to play around in the public park before they left, and the faster they got through these tricks, the more time they would have. The child haraichu adored playing in the park, but like any child of any sapient species, going to ‘school’ and learning things was quite low on her list of priorities. Fiera didn’t have all day to mess around in the park, however. Sometimes she did, but today was not one of those days. Before they could play, they’d have to work- but if the easiness of hold was duplicated here, they wouldn’t have to work very hard at all.

Fiera had set out the same items as before in front of her on the tamped down grass. There was a tiny pebble, a larger rock, a shiny bracelet, and a sheaf of paper, folded. Fiera thankfully had a whole notebook of paper in her backpack- Desiree seemed to love ripping paper up, enjoying the sound and texture as it tore. Desiree eyed the items warily- hadn’t she finished with these yet? Fiera supposed they seemed awfully boring by this point, but perhaps they could make a little game out of it. Fiera liked the idea of playing red light, green light with picking up and dropping items. She guessed it would be a lot more entertaining than regular training, and hopefully would keep Desiree engaged with the lesson for longer. She beckoned Desiree over, and the haraichu came, but not without a deep sigh and dragging of her feet.

Once Desiree had settled herself in front of Fiera, chin in one hand, the humanish got started with the lesson. Just like before, Fiera picked up the pebble and offered it to Desiree. “Desiree, hold.” She said. The haraichu huffed and put her hands out stiffly, taking the pebble. Fiera left it for a few moments. “Ok, now drop.” Desiree squinted at her, not recognizing the new word. Fiera moved her finger quickly, practically slapping the pebble out of Desiree’s hand. “Drop! Good job!” She repeated. Desiree scowled at her- first this lady wanted her to pick up random objects, and now she wasn’t supposed to hold them? Come on! Fiera didn’t let Desiree slow down, however. She pointed at the bracelet. “Hold!” She commanded. Desiree stomped over, grabbing the golden piece of jewlery. “Ok, now drop!” She said. Desiree narrowed her eyes and refused, seemingly out of spite, but Fiera plucked it out her hands before praising her for the ‘drop’.

Desiree seemed to be getting quite grumpy with how simple this was, but now that the haraichu had the basic idea of what Fiera wanted down, the humanish decided to try making a game out of it. She handed Desiree the piece of paper. “Ok Desiree, hold.” She said as the little creature grasped it. Then, she waited. And waited. And waited. Desiree went to put the paper down, getting tired- only for Fiera to keep chirping the word ‘hold’ at her. She groaned. Then, quickly, she said ‘drop!” and Desiree almost fell over herself with surprise, thinking that the release would never come. In fact, she nearly forgot to actually drop the paper, only doing so after Fiera reiterated the command. Fiera couldn’t help but chuckle at her surprise. Desiree gave her a wry look, as if she was getting the idea of what Fiera was trying to do.

They kept going that for a while, with Fiera gesturing at different items. She’d tell Desiree to pick it up, and then they’d wait, playing chicken to see who would drop it, or ask to drop it, first. When Fiera even so much as said “D-”, Desiree would drop the item before she could even finish the word, giggling in her high pitched voice. Other times, Fiera would tell her to pick it up. Then pick it up. Drop it. Until soon, they were going back and forth between orders so quickly that Desiree was practically juggling the object in mid air, laughing wildly. They did this for at least half an hour, stopping and starting. Fiera smiled. Desiree might have thought that this day was a bust, with how boring this trick had been, but it looked like they had found a way to have some fun after all.
