The last trick on Fiera’s list for Desiree today was ‘get’. She had trained this once before, but in a very different pet. Aces and Jack were her love plush. Despite the names and separate bodies, they were actually a singular entity with, supposedly, a singular mind, like a two headed creature without a whole lot of body to connect them. She had taught them the trick in preparation for the agility run, a contest she had entered them in. They had to learn how to grab and pick up a fancy flag, and bring it over to Fiera, delivering it at her feet. In theory, it was a very easy trick to teach to a pet, especially considering the tricks they already knew. Desiree was already well prepared for learning it, already knowing the tricks ‘hold’ and ‘come’, which combined were pretty much exactly what she needed out of ‘get’.

Desiree was an equillion of a different color however, in comparison to Aces and Jack. The love plush was… simple, to say the least. Eager and friendly, it wasn’t difficult to teach them things, but it was hard to get them to pay attention. Desiree, on the other hand, was a child but also a person. She figured things out easily, but got bored and frustrated with the simplicity. Fiera was also teaching her for a different purpose. She had no intention on entering Desiree in any contests, or at least not right now. This was purely for the purpose of training her as a messenger someday, which was significantly more complex and difficult than carrying out a specific routine in a single show. Thankfully, Fiera knew that with her level of intelligence, Desiree would thrive at it. Fiera just needed her to learn the ropes. For that purpose, Fiera had brought some envelopes with her.

She held one up in front of Desiree, pointing at it. “Envelope.” She said. “Ahn-veh-lowp.” She said again slower, then looked pointedly at Desiree. “Aaaaaaahhhn-vih-loop.” The haraichu parroted back at her. Fiera pointed at herself. “What’s this?” She said. “Feera.” The haraichu said back. Fiera pointed at Desiree, a smile quirking onto her face. It was so strange to hear this little creature say words, but so exhilarating to hear her vocabulary expand, slowly but surely. “What’s this?” She said. Desiree paused, as if thinking… and then looked up. “...Shirt?” Fiera had to bite back laughter- she was intending for Desiree to give her own name. She had no clue that she knew what a shirt was! Still, she praised her. “Good job! Shirt!” And now… “What’s this?” She said once more, gesturing to the envelope. “Envelope!” The haraichu squeaked. Fiera clapped at Desiree’s performance, and the pixie seemed quite proud of herself.

Now that Desiree knew what an envelope was, all Fiera had to do was get her to retrieve it on command. It shouldn’t be too hard, she thought. Desiree was a clever girl, after all. The humanish lifted the envelope, letting Desiree get a good look at it, before setting it on the ground between them. “Ok Desiree, hold!” She said, gesturing at the envelope. Desiree looked back and forth between them, before closing the gap between her and the envelope, picking it up. It was an awkward size for her- about the same proportion a poster would be in comparison to Fiera. The stiff paper made it manageable however, and she tucked it under one arm. “Ok Desiree, now come!” She said, and Desiree trekked over to Fiera. “Good job!” She said upon Desiree’s arrival, taking the envelope and giving her a blueberry. “Good get! You got the envelope!” She said, using simple words and a friendly voice.

Desiree happily took the blueberry, but Fiera could see that cogs were turning in her mind, processing the words that had been used and introduced. Fiera was glad for it- she would love to see Desiree’s vocabulary improve. While she ate, Fiera went and stashed the envelope on top of a tree stump, in plain sight. When Desiree had finished, Fiera addressed her. “Ok Desiree- get the envelope!” Desiree looked down, confused, and mumbled “Get…” under her breath. Fiera clarified, using some of the few words the haraichu could understand. “Get the envelope! Hold, come!” With that, Desiree seemed to understand a bit better, and made her way toward the envelope. Once she grabbed it, she held it up for Fiera’s approval. The humanish nodded, and Desiree skittered across the ground, back toward her owner, dropping the envelope at Fiera’s feet. “Good job! Good get!” She praised. With a bit more effort, they were able to make a game out of this as well- with Fiera hiding the envelope, and having Desiree go get it. It had taken some doing, but it looked like the pair of them were finally starting to get along.

October had come, and with it, the season of Vai Min Mur. To celebrate, Fiera had decided to give some of her ‘spookier’ pets more attention. Granted, creatures of more scary and aggressive appearances weren’t really her thing, but all of her creatures deserved love. Even… this one. She glanced at other people and their pets as she walked by. The citizens of the labs were out in full force today, it seemed. It would be difficult for Fiera to find a private spot to train, if she was being honest. She couldn’t blame them for wanting to be out and about, of course. It was a spectacular fall day, full of crisp breezes and crunchy leaves, with the sun setting sooner and sooner every day, and Fiera was grateful for it. She had the feeling that with this pet, she’d need all the help she could get.

Decima was a vai min mur pet, and definitely one of the… tricky variety, instead of the treat variety. As much as Fiera hated treated a sapient creature like this, Fiera had had to resort to leashing her with a toddler harness just to get her to come along. A member of the red imp species, Decima was a nigh perfect example of them, taking every opportunity to cause her owner trouble… especially in more spiteful and violent ways than Fiera would prefer. As a result, the humanish had opted to wear tougher, less fashionable clothing than she usually would, even if she felt ugly and garish wearing it. She had enough bite marks on her from getting the imp out here, she didn’t need more from the training sessions. With any luck, the gorgeous weather would be enough to get Decima to cooperate. It was her season, after all.

Eventually, she found a deep gulley, filled with piles and piles of crunchy leaves and roots overhanging from the trees above. Autumn distilled into the form of a cave. Hopefully it would be enough to put Decima in a good mood. She flipped the switch on the leash, letting Decima unwind it to its limits and explore the area. While she did that, Fiera tied it around a long, fully embedded tree root coming off the wall of the gulley. Hopefully that would be stable enough to keep the imp from running away. Without any further ado, Fiera knew it was time to start training- starting with Decima’s name. “Decima!” She called, her voice sugar sweet. “Over here, darling!” She called. As expected however, the imp showed no interest in paying attention to her, and instead seemed to be much enjoying savaging the piles of leaves surrounding them, slashing at them while chuckling darkly to herself.

Fiera frowned slightly. She had had the feeling that this would be the case. Thankfully, she brought some motivational tools- that is, food. Several packets of beef jerky, in Fiera’s case, stuffed inside a code operated lockbox, the kind you’d use as a miniature safe or to hide a spare set of keys. Fiera had learned very quickly that anything less complex was not safe from the imp. While Decima was somewhat cruel, she wasn’t stupid in the slightest, and treated every means of keeping her out as another problem to be solved. As a result, secret passwords were the easiest way of keeping her under control. She clicked it open, and took out a strip of jerky. “Decima!” She said, backing up until she was just barely out of the range of the leash. “Look what I have!” The imp glanced at her, sniffing the air. Fiera smiled, but before she could even blink, the creature was in front of her, swinging her arms at the food.

Well… a reaction was a reaction. Fiera tossed her the jerky, watching with a mix of amusement and anxiety as the red devil chewed it up with FAR more enthusiasm than was strictly necessary. “Good girl, Decima!” Fiera said again, and she could have sworn she saw the creature roll her eyes sarcastically. Very well then. Fiera wasn’t the type to be intimidated- she had met plenty of people like this. She tried it again a couple times, rewarding Decima with jerky each time she responded to her name. Soon enough, Fiera decided it was time to test her out, see what she had learned. She made sure Decima could see she had no jerky in her hands this time, but still called out. “Decima!” She said, watching- sure enough, her ear flickered, even though she was clearly trying very hard to ignore her trainer. Fiera smiled- she wasn’t going to get out learning that easily.

After a tussle between the two over a jerky strip, Fiera decided that it was time to teach Decima some manners. The piles spread around the gulley they were in had shrunk in size since the pair had arrived not too long ago, humanish and red devil. This was due in part to Decima systematically destroying them, and from the fact that Fiera had had to chase the imp through several of them to retrieve her bag before the creature could rip it open and scatter the contents absolutely everywhere. That would have been a disaster. Thankfully, Fiera had managed to get it back, but not without a fresh set of scratches all over her arms, and a colorful variety of leaves and twigs embedded in Fiera’s hair. She could still hear Decima snickering from where she was sitting. Apparently tormenting her owner gave her a fantastic amount of joy.

Fine then. Two could play at that game. Whether or not she appreciated her past, Fiera had been a leader, a fighter, and when it came down to it, someone who knew how to deal out discipline. As a result, she knew that “No” was the next trick to teach. If Decima didn’t know how to listen… well, Fiera suspected that it would end worse for the imp than it would for Fiera. Nobody liked aggressive strays, least of all intelligent ones. If Decima escaped from Fiera’s care, she doubt that it would end well for the devil. She knew that it would be difficult to get Decima to listen, but as far as she was concerned, Decima didn’t have to like her training so long as she understood it. To that purpose, Fiera began fiddling around with the box of jerky, getting ready to get out a piece.

Sure enough, she heard the tell tale sound of Decima skittering through the leaves after her- and the screech of surprise combined with the twang of the leash cutting her short. Fiera turned around smugly to see Decima splayed out on the ground in front of her, thrashing around, trying to figure out what had caught her. When she found the leash she snarled and bit at it, but it held firm. “Decima, no.” Fiera said, crouching in front of the devil and trying to pull the leash out of her mouth. Decima snarled and slashed at her, an attack that Fiera only just barely dodged. Fiera huffed and waited for Decima to wear herself out. Every so often, Fiera would think she saw an opening, and would reach in to try and get Decima untangled, firmly stating “No.” Every time she struggled against it, only for the red devil to lash out at her again.

After nearly half an hour, Decima seemed to give up, lying on the forest floor, panting. Fiera was impressed with her stamina, as the humanish had gotten bored of her antics fifteen minutes in. Either the red devil was exhausted, or just didn’t find this fun anymore. “Good job! Good no!” Fiera said cheerily once Decima stopped fighting the leash, and unlooped it from her limbs with one hand while passing her the piece of jerky with the other. The devil looked at her and hissed quietly, but when Fiera shook the piece of meat at her again, she took it begrudgingly. She let Fiera finish getting the leash off the rest of her limbs as she ate, eyeing her suspiciously. The moment she was free however, it was back to being a terror. Fiera got a sharp blow to the back of the head before she managed to retreat again.

“Decima, no.” She said firmly as the devil flailed at her again. This time, she didn’t seem to be trying to fight the leash as opposed to trying to tear Fiera’s face off. Fiera sighed, and sat down, looking at her glumly. Decima slowed- she was a trickster. Her targets weren’t supposed to get BORED. Fiera took the opportunity her slowing presented. “Good job, Decima.” She said with a wry smile, and tossed the devil another piece of jerky, which Decima caught in surprise. Decima sat down with her, after that, chewing thoughtfully. Fiera got out yet another piece of jerky, and Decima grabbed for it roughly. “Decima, NO.” The humanish said firmly, and Decima froze, arm still out. A growl erupted from her throat, but she pulled her arm back harshly, crossing them against her chest. Fiera sighed with relief as she praised her and tossed the jerky over. She might not like listening to Fiera, but it would do her good in the end.
