Now that Yoru understood the general concept of being taught a trick, Fiera had the feeling it would get a lot easier to teach him. Harachiu generally were pretty easy learners. They didn’t have that eagerness to please that houluh shared, but they were smart and picked up on different “rules” and how to play with them quickly. With that in mind, Fiera had the feeling that Yoru would be a fast learner. The harachiu had already shown a propensity for loving games and play, and loved ‘teasing’ Fiera for lack of a better word, usually striving to do better than her, to get ahead. She suspected it was a ploy for attention, but it was one that Fiera could manipulate to her advantage. With any luck, that desire to succeed could be transformed into some quick trick lessons. She already had a couple more in mind (and on the list she had brought with her).

The next couple of tricks she wanted to try on Yoru were ‘no shake’ and ‘yes shake’. Specifically, she wanted the harachiu to turn his head in different directions based on her orders. This should be easy enough considering that all it required was a simple motion, but Fiera knew that anything could go wrong if she was being honest. He was just a kid after all, and kids were prone to distraction and mischief. In fact, Yoru was getting into some mischief right now, as she gently picked him up and dragged him back over to her as he tried to drag a prickly looking plant with an outstretched hand. She would rather not have to do first aid today, all things considered. The harachiu huffed loudly, blowing a lock of hair out of his eyes as Fiera prepared for the lesson’s start, getting out her box of blueberries again.

These berries proved useful in training harachiu in the past, and should be just as good for this. She’d only be giving them as treats though and not as actual training tools, as she wasn’t sure that Yoru could restrain himself from running over to grab and eat them instead of just looking at them, which is what she wanted him to do for this. Instead she would have to find another way to catch and hold his attention. It was only the movement of the head she wanted today, after all. Yoru didn’t know how to speak yet- words were just funny noises to him, ones that Fiera made a lot of. As a result, he had no concept of ‘yes’ and ‘no’, even if he knew how to move his head to match that. Fiera could focus on hooking up a concept to those movements later- it was just the movements that she needed him to learn.

Well, Fiera was still pretty new to him, so hopefully her body would be an easy enough target for him to focus on. All she’d have to do is move her finger around his head. She’d move it up and down to get him to shake his head ‘yes’ and reward him for it, and then left and right to teach him to move his head ‘no’. Hopefully her finger would be enough to keep his attention, letting him train his eyes on it and obligating him to move his head when she moved it left and right or up and down. Now all she had to do was try it out. “Yoru!” She said, getting his attention before settling herself down in front of the harachiu. He raised one eyebrow at her, curious about what she was doing, but not understanding… yet. He sat down too, confused but intrigued.

Once Yoru was all settled down, Fiera began the training. She did a dramatic flair with one hand, getting Yoru to focus on it and causing him to giggle a little bit at the theatrics. She’d take it, she decided as she held up one finger. He focused on it, and she began to move it. “Ok Yoru,” She said as she traced a line through the air, his head and eyes following it. “Shake yes.” She moved the finger up and down. He followed it with his eyes at first but after reaching a certain point he couldn’t move his eyes any further and had to turn his whole head to follow her finger. The same happened when she moved her finger down, causing him to drop his chin to follow it. After a single round of this, she stopped and got out a blueberry. “That’s it, Yoru- good shake yes.” She said.

Fiera offered him a berry, and the harachiu blinked in surprise. That was it? That was all he had to do? He looked between her and the berry and shrugged, taking it from her. She watched politely as he ate, finishing off the fruit in just a couple bites. When he was done, she lifted her finger again. He trained his eyes on it even more eagerly this time, if it meant that he’d get food out of it. Once again she lifted it up and down, but faster this time. She expected Yoru to be less confused and more attentive now, so hopefully he’d be able to perform the trick faster. “Shake yes, Yoru.” She commanded as she lifted and dropped the finger, and he obeyed accordingly, keeping his eyes trained on the digit at all times. She was able to keep it going for a couple repetitions this time.

She went at a speed that actually made it look like he was properly shaking his head ‘yes’ too- a further success. “That’s it, Yoru!” She said, and gave him another berry. He was ready for it this time, reaching out for it as she lowered it down. She happily released it and the sweet fruit was gone even quicker than the last one. With that out of the way, Fiera decided to try the other trick as well- “shake no”. She held her finger up again, but this time she said “Yoru, shake no.” before moving it. When she started moving it, Yoru began the movement for shaking yes, but quickly realized his mistake when the finger began moving in a perpendicular direction. He course corrected, drawing an awkward semi-circle in midair with his chin, but got the idea eventually, following her hand left and right, as if he was saying ‘no’ with his body language.

When she was done, she gave him another berry for the good effort. He happily accepted it, clearly enjoying getting so many treats for such a simple task. A minute later and he was all done, ready to try again. Fiera held up her finger once more, though she suspected he wouldn’t need it for much longer- he was clearly getting the hang of this. “No shake.” She said, and traced it back and forth, faster than before. He caught on quick and shook his head in turn, looking exactly like he was saying no. Then she quickly switched gears, moving the finger up and down again. “Yoru, shake yes.” She said as she switched it. The harachiu giggled again, and immediately switched gears, shaking his head up and down instead of left and right. Fiera smiled- he was really starting to catch on to what she was trying to teach him.

With that in mind, Fiera decided to discard with the finger after that. Not literally, all of her digits were still attached to her hand, but in the sense of not using it for the training anymore. When Yoru was done with the blueberry he got for that round of training, she kept her fingers laced in front of her in her lap. “Ok Yoru.” She said, eyeing him. “Shake yes!” Yoru looked ather for a moment, and then at her hands. Then he hesitantly shook his head up and down, looking at Fiera for approval. “Good job, Yoru!” She said as he did so. The harachiu smiled and shook his head harder, with clearly increasing confidence. Fiera stopped him before he could make himself dizzy, of course, and offered him another berry. When he was done with it, Fiera decided to give him one last test, to make a game out of it.

“Ok Yoru… no shake!” She said, and he obeyed instantly, shaking his head left and right. “Yes shake!” She said again, and he quickly changed directions to up and down. Fiera giggles and Yoru laughed back. “No shake!” She said again, and he switched directions. Fiera waited a moment… “No shake!” She said, and he started changing directions, only to fully realize what she said and continue shaking his head left and right. They kept going like this, playing, until Yoru finally fell over. He must have been incredibly dizzy shaking his head back and forth like that for so long, but he clearly wasn’t upset about it. Instead he rolled on the ground laughing, and Fiera chuckled quietly herself. Yeah, that proved it- he definitely knew what he was doing now. It was a simple trick to learn, but it looked like they had found a way to have fun doing it.

With a little time, Yoru had gotten the idea of shaking his head yes and no down pat. He lost interest in doing that particular trick after a certain point though, and just... wouldn't listen to her anymore. She sighed as she asked him to come over for what seemed like the fifth time in the past minute, only for him to scramble off again, giggling. He was a sweet kid, no doubt of that, but he was a bit of a wild child. She couldn't much blame him though- it wasn't like the harachiu had any parents to raise him. An owner yes, and perhaps others of his species to play with, but parents? People to discipline him? Well... Fiera supposed it came down to her then, at the end of the day. She wouldn't be happy about it though- she always hated disciplining her pets. Made her feel so mean.

And yet, if anyone was going to do it, it might as well be her. Fiera didn't like disciplining her pets, but she was sure that she'd give Yoru more leeway on this than anyone else would. He was a nice boy, but far too wild, and that could get him into some trouble down the line. It was better to teach him the meaning of the word 'no' now and have him just suck it up than for him to get in trouble with someone else later. She certainly had the treats to make teaching it a less insufferable experience than it normally would be. She could probably do it just the same as her other pets, even if it was a little bothersome for him. She got the box of berries out, and Yoru was instantly interested- he knew full well by this point what the appearance of treats meant.

She picked a blueberry out of the box and closed it again before Yoru could get a hand in there to grab some for himself (a crime he was trying very hard to commit by pushing past Fiera's other hand insistently.) Once it was closed though, she scooped it back into her bag, where he couldn't go. Then she held the one berry out in front of Yoru and pointed at it. "Yoru, no." She said firmly, in a tone of voice that he KNEW meant 'you did wrong' by this point. He looked at her, and then the berry... and reached out for it. She sighed and closed her hand, trapping the berry inside of her fist. "No." She repeated, but Yoru only groaned loudly and beat against her fist with tiny hands. Needless to say, it didn't hurt and Fiera was able to maintain her grip quite easily.

After a few minutes of loud noises and protests, Yoru seemed to finally wear himself out. The harachiu sat on the ground and pouted as hard as he could, but he didn't try to get the berry anymore. Satisfied, Fiera opened her hand. "Good job, Yoru. Good no." She said, and let the berry roll in front of him. He looked at it with open mouthed anger, back at Fiera, and shoved the whole thing in his mouth. "That's- for goodness' sake, CHEW, Yoru." Fiera warned, but the grumpy harachiu insisted on eating the berry in his own horrifying way. Fiera sighed, and decided to take this opportunity to get out another berry. Once she did, she held it out in her hand, the same as before. "No." She said to Yoru, pointing at it. He reached out to grab it, slowly. "Yoru, NO." She said again, louder this time. The harachiu recoiled for a moment.

...But then he leaned forward again to take it. Fiera groaned and closed her hand again. Instead of trying to pry it open this time though, Yoru just leaned back on his heels again and waited. At least he was learning. She opened her hand again after several seconds and gave a begrudging "Good no, Yoru." The harachiu leapt up and took the berry, even though Fiera wasn't entirely sure he deserved it. Ah well- at least she could give it another go. She got out another berry- hopefully the last one- and placed it in her palm again. "Yoru, no." She said, and gestured to it. Yoru, to his credit, sat down. He waited... and waited. Fiera could tell it was killing him, based on how much he was fidgeting. Eventually, she decided to cut him a break. "Ok Yoru, good n-" She said, but Yoru was already up and snatching it out of her hand. Well. At least he understood the word.
