When that happened, Serkan’s eyes flared wide and the toothy roots surged forward, scrabbling against the surface of the pumpkin and digging in. Fiera’s lip curled as she watched the roots dig into the flesh of the pumpkin. It was… pretty gross, all things considered. She certainly didn’t LIKE the idea of that being done to another living thing, but no creature ever STAYED injured in the tournaments, so it must be fine. Soon the pumpkin began to deflate and become more and more wrinkled. Soon it looked more like a deflated basketball than a fruit, or perhaps the remnant of a jack-o-lantern… in January. It was nothing more than a withered husk and Serkan released the cage, satisfied. Fiera’s eyebrows were high on her head by now, but she couldn’t say that he did it wrong. “...Good sap, Serkan!” She said, surprised, and tossed him an apple.

He ate it quickly, clearly not bothered at all by what Fiera had him do. While he was busy with the smaller treat, Fiera got another pumpkin out from under the blanket, and opened the cage to take out an old one. Ugh. It was the texture of shoe leather now, and about the same color as well. The humanish tossed it to the side, hoping that it would fully decompose on its own in the field before anyone else found it. Then she rolled the new pumpkin in and closed the cage door, locking it firmly. With any luck, Serkan would be able to sap the pumpkin even faster this time, now that he knew what he was doing. The nyssa seemed to notice what she was doing now, and returned his attention to the cage. Fiera backed away, letting him have at it. “Okay Serkan, now sap!” She commanded.

He lurched forward, and clamped his jaws around the cage. Fiera stood a healthy distance back, but kept an eye on what was happening. This pumpkin was smaller than the last one, so he had to grow his fang-roots out more before they made contact. The process was quicker this time though, and now that he had done this at least once already, he was able to start absorbing nutrients from the pumpkin even faster. It was almost completely deflated in just a couple seconds this time, leaving nothing but a frisbee shaped skin. Fiera didn’t really want to know WHAT he was doing to the interior of the pumpkin for that to happen, but she had long since learned to stop questioning this sort of thing. “Good sap, Serkan!” She said happily as he pulled his head away. “Very good boy!” She threw him a couple more apples for encouragement as well.

He snapped up the apples quickly, and was already sniffing at Fiera’s hair before she set the apparatus back up again. “Hang on, I’m getting the pumpkin, just! Ugh!” She said, as he practically sucked her hair into his nostril. She hadn’t set the cage back up yet but… maybe this would still work. She could see if he knew how to sap an object on command, instead of just crunching it up like he would any other time. Giving him a bit of room, Fiera backed off a bit and pointed at the pumpkin. “Serkan, sap!” She said. He grabbed the pumpkin before the words could even finish leaving her mouth but paused after, as if he was processing what she was saying. Then instead of just crunching through the pumpkin… she could see it begin to deflate in his jaws. Fiera sighed with relief as he obeyed her order.

She never thought she would be so happy to see such a fundamentally gross looking process get carried out. He did it well though, and she decided to try it again with a few more pumpkins, just for practice. Sure enough, each time she rolled out another pumpkin for him and gave the order, Serkan carried it out faster and more accurately before. Soon he was able to drain a gourd dry in ten seconds flat- and she WAS counting. When the last pumpkin dropped from his jaws, landing like an abandoned pancake on the ground, Fiera decided she was satisfied. This was one heck of a move for him to have learned, and she was sure that they could use it to great effect during the tournament. For now though, it was time for them to move on. While this was great progress, they still had more tricks on the list.

The next trick she wanted Serkan to learn was ‘roar’. He already knew howl of course, so how different could the two possibly be? She did want him to know two though- those sound based moves could prove invaluable on the battlefield. It was always best to whittle down your opponents defenses as much as possible, especially considering how many armored and sturdy pets there were likely to be in a tournament for plant pets. Serkan would need all the help he could get in circumventing those defenses. Still, having another move learned to base it off of would probably help him out immensely- Fiera just needed to get him to make a different kind of noise this time. She could do that! If he was willing to mimic one kind of noise, chances are he’d be willing to do other kinds. And she had plenty of noisemakers on hand.

Fiera still had her phone and speakers of course, but they were starting to get a little low on battery. She wanted Serkan’s roar to be more focused than his howl anyway. Instead of trying to communicate with another theoretical bloodroot nyssa, she wanted him to directly address- and intimidate- an individual opponent. As usual, that opponent was likely going to be her for the purpose of this training. Lucky her. Thankfully, she still had the metal cage from the last trick, and metal pipe that she kept in her bag as a pole to tie other pets to sometimes- she had just forgotten to take it out. No wonder her bag was so heavy. Still, it would do for the purpose of making a raucous and unpleasant noise. Not wanting to waste any time, Fiera began banging on the cage with the pipe. Between the cage’s thick, impenetrable bars and the pipe’s hollow interior, it created a noise that definitely hurt Fiera’s ears.

She kept up with it though, in the hopes that it would upset Serkan enough to make him respond. Serkan shook his head and a deep rumbling noise began to come from his throat. “That’s it! Keep going! Roar!” Fiera shouted to encourage him, though she doubted that he could hear her over the racket she was making. He kept shaking his head, clearly upset by the noise, and Fiera flattened her own ears against her head, knowing what was coming. “Come on, come on…” She said under her breath, until Serkan finally let loose. A deep, bass roar came from his jaws, and Fiera could feel its vibrations deep in her chest. It took everything she had to not fall over, and she certainly wasn’t banging on the cage anymore with the effort it took to stay upright. After what seemed like years, Serkan finally ran out of breath.

Fiera cracked open one eye as the roar trailed off, and immediately leapt into action. “Good job, Serkan! Good roar!” She said eagerly. She tossed him as many apples as she could handle, and he ate them hesitantly. Judging from how he was eyeing the cage though, it was clear that he found the fact that Fiera stopped making those awful noises to be the real reward. As far as Fiera was concerned though, that was a good thing- it meant that he would (hopefully) roar again if she started it back up. Just to be sure though, she tried giving the command. “Serkan, roar!” She said. The nyssa grumbled a bit… and stopped. She sighed and banged on the cage with the pipe a few times. “Come on, roar!” Once the annoying noise was back, it didn’t take long at all for him to start up again, letting out that horrible, deep sound.

Fiera dropped the pipe in favor of covering her ears, waiting until he petered out. When he finally did she tossed him a few apples, relieved. She always hated training sound based moves- they always did so much damage to her hearing. She set the pipe down after that though, and plugged her ears instead. When she gave the order to roar this time, he actually did it, instead of the weak grumble he made earlier. With each treat and repeat, his roars got stronger and longer, to Fiera’s delight. Soon he was able to let out the perfect roar each time, every time. Another move taught, another box to check off. After a few more half hearted efforts between the both of them, Fiera finally decided to give it a rest and sat down. Serkan joined her, and together they waited a bit until their ears finally stopped ringing.

One more move. One more move and then they could be done. Honestly, Fiera was getting pretty tired after all this training. She had carried pumpkins, swung sticks around for ages, her hearing was still a little funny after getting screamed at by a creature five times her size for hours, she desperately needed a bath… she was tired, to say the least. But after going through her training list, she decided that she would call it quits after this one. She had nothing against Serkan, but she was exhausted. That being said though, this move could come in handy… though she wasn’t sure if her pet would be able to get the hang of it. Still, she had to try. Fiera had read about creatures being able to loosen their fur in the heat of battle, shedding it willingly when opponents grabbed on instead of allowing themselves to be dragged around.

Serkan would definitely need that, considering how much of him there was to grab. There wasn’t much that could be done about the majority of his body, considering that it was made of thick bark, but he could definitely afford to lose a few leaves. Experience with him indicated that while removing his leaves wasn’t damaging, it did sting if they weren’t ready to come off- like getting a few hairs ripped out. She needed to get him used to that. Without further ado then, she began to scramble up Serkan’s side, a sack of apples in her off hand. The nyssa barely noticed it as he was still resting after the last trick. His eye only barely opened to watch her scramble up. She got a good grip on one of his branches and reached out to take a clump of leaves in her hand. “Okay Serkan… loosen!” She said.

Then she yanked on them- not incredibly hard, but definitely hard enough to wake him up. He glanced over his shoulder slowly as Fiera renewed her grip. “Serkan, loosen!” She said, hoping to convince him to let go. He grumbled slightly as she yanked again- and the leaves popped off. Not by choice, judging by the rumblings beneath her feet, but she would reward him for it anyway. “Good loosen, Serkan!” She said, a bit of a nervous tone in her voice. She tossed a few apples “overboard” for him to eat. He accepted them only begrudgingly though, casting an eye back to look at her. When he was done though, she reached out and grabbed onto another cluster of leaves. She heard him huff loudly. “Well, if you don’t want it to hurt then let go! You can afford to lose some leaves, you’re a big boy!” She said.

Not wanting to waste time though, Fiera tugged on them gently. “Serkan, loosen. It’s okay!” She said gently. With gentle pulling, they started popping off one by one. Serkan still seemed uncomfortable, but not as upset as before… and the leaves had come off with a lot less effort than last time as well. Fiera let them flutter away from her fingers, satisfied with his progress so far. It was clear that he didn’t LIKE losing leaves, but was willing to learn how to let them go easy rather than risk the pain. “Good loosen, Serkan!” Fiera said happily, trying to make it clear how pleased she was with this. She rolled him a few more apples and he seemed to accept them a little more readily this time. Hopefully she wouldn’t have to yank off too many more leaves before he got the point- he seemed to be getting close to understanding.

Fiera clambered over to another branch to gain access to another fistful of leaves. Serkan shifted a bit, but Fiera had the feeling that even he knew he couldn’t really knock her off or grab at her without hurting himself. When she gripped the leaves, she shouted back to Serkan. “Okay buddy, loosen!” She said. He shifted slightly, causing the bundle of branches Fiera was sitting in to sway slightly- and the leaves that Fiera was holding on to popped off without her even having to tug on them. Serkan made another noise, but it was more a sigh of relief than a grumble of irritation. It looked like he enjoyed being able to ‘let go’ of his leaves and not have it hurt as much as she enjoyed him knowing how to do it. Fiera rolled him a few more apples, but it was clear that this trick was in the bag.
