There were other, smaller ones too, similar to mosca and enileaf, but without the wings or feelers. It’s like all these creatures were missing all the best parts! Along with looking awkward and having faces that would make children cry, many of these creatures were like lab pets with the serial numbers (and interesting parts) filed off. Equillion equillions with no horns. Neptica that looked like they had eye sockets. Stuffed baby Laredo with boring brown dapples instead of their characteristic bright colors. She didn’t see anything that looked like it came from a Wiurn or sarane. She wondered why that was. There was something strange about all of these creatures, but she couldn’t quite place it. She sighed- even if she didn’t recognize these creatures, she could still scan them for expensive parts. People would buy a headless pelt, so long as it was in good condition.

She kept digging through the macabre room, looking for anything of value. And yet...she didn’t find much. Much to her disappointment (and disgust), the pelts were all somehow damaged or worthless in some way. With some, she’d touch them and their fur would fall out in clumps where she ran her fingers over it. Others looked and felt ok, but she’d shift them around and find that they were soaked and stained with some mysterious dark liquid. And of course, there were the bugs. The endless, ubiquitous beetles that ate through the pelts in patches and scuttled away from the light when Fiera revealed them. She was amazed (and disgusted) at not having seen them when she came in. The place was literally crawling with them, on every mount and surface. She squealed when she saw several of them clambering over Escobar, and snatched him away.

Nearby a bottled shadow doesn't look all that much kinder, beset upon by the same disturbed bugs. It weighs down a leaf, which strangely, the creatures don't seem interested in disturbing.

The humanish continued to look through the room, though frankly this venture was starting to look like a bust. Everything was damaged or poor quality in some way, and more and more of those bugs seemed to be coming from every crack. She kicked a rug in frustration, and stubbed her toe on it. She hissed loudly in frustration and clutches her foot, dropping Escobar in the process. He slithered over to where the lump was, circling around it. When Fiera had finished swearing, she threw off the bug eaten rug to see what it was hiding. She yelped in surprise as another rivulet of bugs swarmed out and around her feet, the collective clattering of their feet on the wood floor actually audible to her. Once they had petered out and Fiera managed to convince herself to get off of the dresser she had hopped up onto, she went to look at her prize.

She found, oddly out of place in this room, a bottle and a waxed autumn leaf. At first she thought whatever was in the bottle was a strange dark liquid. Just then however, glowering red eyes peered out at her, and whatever was inside of the bottle rushed around, shaking its container as if furious to be imprisoned in this way. She heard faint growls emanating from it, occasionally building up into little shrieks. Needless to say, she wasn’t willing to let it out again, and decided that whoever had bottled this little shadow up had had a good reason for it. Still, it was the least bug infested thing in her room, so she popped it in her bag to take home with her. Who knew, maybe someone back in the city could tell her what it actually was. With that, she turned her attention to the other item.

The leaf resembled an autumn leaf, but some aspects about it felt...false. It had a strangely waxy cuticle, for one. Maybe someone had coated it in wax to protect it? But who? Nobody lived here, and she couldn’t imagine why they’d spend their time putting wax on leaves anyway. Furthermore, it had crumbled perfectly into the shape of a wicked face, leering at her from the leaf’s surface. But no matter how much she bent it, she couldn’t get it to break any more, as if the leaf was mocking her for even trying. Well, that was a good thing because she was shoving it in her bag and taking it too. She unzipped a pocket near the outside and slipped it in there- even if it was hard to break, she didn’t think it was a good idea to push her luck putting it in with the bottle.

Once the lead was shoved in her bag, she hefted it back over her shoulder, not putting it down for a moment. The beetles had gotten even worse than before. She shivered with disgust as they crawled over her shoes and around her feet. Where were they even coming from? She scooped up Escobar, who didn’t even bother moving to brush the offending insects off of his carapace. The taxidermy was almost drowned in them now, swarming and flooding. She cringed and looked for a door. The front door wasn’t really an option- she didn’t feel like having her legs grabbed again. That left the only other door in the room. It was big, oaken, and heavy looking, but simplistic in its crafting. She didn’t particularly care what it looked like though, so long as it lead out of this bug covered room. She gripped the handle and pulled.

It swung open smoothly on its hinges, with nary a squeak. Unusual for the mansion this month, but nothing to write home about. Fiera checked through the door before she entered of course, but couldn’t see much in the gloom. She looked back at the room she was in, quickly filling with beetles. Ugh. Well, anything had to be better than here. She stepped over the threshold, and the door swung shut behind her with a thud. Once she was in however, the area turned out to be better lit than she thought- she didn’t see any additional lightbulbs that were on, but more like the mansion decided it wanted her to see it only after she came in. It was a hallway- one so long she couldn’t see the end. It was lined with out of date, peeling wall paper, and under her feet was cheap, worn, but thankfully clean carpet.

A wax leaf blows in from a nearby window.

Just as she was looking at the old carpet, bare in patches, another wax leaf blew into her field of vision from her left. Huh. She picked that one up too, and slipped it in her bag next to its fellow. As she did, Fiera glanced at where it came from-a row of windows on the left wall, one of them cracked open, letting in both the leaf and a draft. She zipped her bag and closed it. As she did however, she looked down at the grounds...only to realize that they were dozens of feet down. How did that happen? They were supposed to be on the ground floor still! Fiera groaned- if she had to get out of here, it looked like the windows were not an option. With that realization in place, she looked at the hall again, squinting in the search for any kind of door.

Despite her searching, Fiera couldn’t find any evidence of an exit in this hall. She sighed, realizing that she’d have to go back through the bug room and go outside...but when she turned around, the other end of the hall seemed just as distant. Where had her door gone? She groaned loudly and started walking. It was the only thing she could do in this situation, really. She kept Escobar tucked up under one arm, picking some leftover bugs off of him. At least she didn’t have to worry about her pet getting antsy. Escobar couldn’t act up, even if he wanted to. She kind of wished he would though- this hall was less scary (so far) and more just...dull. Both in level of excitement and color- she could practically see her own colorful outfit’s hues dripping off of her, leached off by the surrounding environment.

That couldn’t happen for real, of course. Well, Fiera supposed anything could happen in the eccentric’s mansion. It wasn’t happening right NOW though. She was just a tad bored right now, by the incredibly long hallway. The wall sort was yellowed slate blue and red, with a white baseboard and the carpet below the same colors, but with more red than blue. The view from the window wasn’t helpful either, or entertaining. She could faintly see the mansion’s yard in the distance, but the majority of the view was obscured by fog. The windows were old too, most stuck shut and grimy at their margins. Fiera absent mindedly wipes her hand on her pant leg, recalling how she had had to touch one of them after getting her wax leaf, to stop a draft. She somewhat regretted it now- these windows were the opposite of clean.

At least it wasn’t full of bugs though. Or water, she thought with a shudder. A couple months ago, she had nearly drowned while out with some more of her golems. She was just walking on the lawn (sandy at the time) when water started rising out of nowhere. The next thing she knew, it was lapping at her feet, then ankles, then calves. She had rushed into the building to escape the rising water, only to find no good ways to go further up and... yeah. It had been pretty stressful for her. By comparison, vai min mur had been tame. The bug room wasn’t scary, just gross. This hall wasn’t scary, just boring. The hands had been pretty spooky, admittedly... but she could tell that they were fakes. Zombies weren’t real, so they must have just been a regular mansion item, enchanted to look like rotting arms.

That made her think, admittedly. Not about how the mansion could turn unrelated items into something resembling the undead. That was something she had always assumed the mansion could do. It was magic, duh. Instead, she couldn’t help but consider how each of the things she had seen were, in theory, SOMEONE’S worst nightmare. The dead rising again, dragging you to your grave. Mutated and malformed animals. Swarms of ravenous insects. An endless, inescapable area, forcing you to starve or jump. None of them were particularly scary to Fiera, which made her wonder... did that mean her fear was out there, somewhere in the mansion? Now that would be interesting... were it not impossible, she snorted. Her fears had been left behind in her hometown. Unless the mansion had a means of teleporting her there, she wasn’t likely going to see any of those people or places ever again.

A strange noise can be heard; where was it coming from? It was a little spooky, but thankfully not scary enough to frighten off any critters.
