They were both fresh babies, new to the world and to being brought to places like this. They were the first offspring Aura had managed to acquire on their own, and they were thrilled to see the results. Twin solid black girls, and a beautiful galaxy-like butterfly winged boy that could have been the most beautiful creature they'd ever seen. Their thoughts drifted, however, towards what they could still get with the creatures they had. What if the emerald green of the leaves on Eclipse passed on? What if they got a solid black butterfly?
So, they had put them both in carriers, fed them the appropriate treats, and brought them to the facility to be introduced. The house was coming together well, and the backyard and porch had been the priority. The males mostly stayed in the backyard and in their hutch; the females stayed in the back porch or in the yard when the hutch was locked and the males contained. They had plenty of nutrients, but no exposure to one another- only the pachee of their gender. As a result, when they opened the door to the carriers, both pachee scurried out and seemed confused on where to start. One another, or the room?

In contrast to the others, they immediately went for one another. Rave and Eclipse sniffed all over the other's body, but they'd been in some contact with other pachee, and could smell one another in the yard they shared; they were not entirely unfamiliar scents. They'd never met face to face, of course, but they were both new. They both smelled of youth, of the sun, of home. It did not take them long to brush shoulders, purr their acceptance of one another without the need for words. With that done, they turned their attention to the room together. Their lithe bodies bound over the simulated trees, the hardwood floor. The light of day filtered through the window, leaving a pool of sunlight in the middle of the floor that looked particularly inviting.
Aura watched them with amusement, shaking their head, and settled themself on the chair in the corner once more. The last few times, they'd barely had any time to read when they brought a book, so they hadn't brought one that time. Instead, once they settled back and got comfortable, they brought out a pen and paper and started writing down rough ideas of how they could schedule their week.

The pachee sniffed all over the floor and the cat tree, taking in the faint scents of other pachee that were long gone. No matter how much cleaning the staff here did, there were still motes of pollen stuck between floorboards, or clumps of fur in impossible to clean locations. After all, what human managed to get up under the pachee tree and investigate the bolts that held it together? As a result, there were many things to investigate. The faint scent of cleaning supplies were pleasant, but the story was mostly in who had been here before, and how long ago. They tried to imagine, based on what they picked up, who these pachee had been. And what were they going to be doing that made them part of this?
Aura tucked one leg up under them, sketching out a rough idea. They needed income. The Panther ran sometimes, and they were pretty sure they could get a few hours in of bartending to make some credits. Their cafe was open during the day; until they could buy a few robots, they had to run the counter. Eventually, perhaps Liberty could be taught how to do it and the robots could just serve and clean...

When they reconvened(indeed, in that inviting patch of sunlight), they tucked their legs underneath themselves and looked at one another. Without a word, they agreed they were friends for the moment, and conversation followed. This was exciting, after all, and they were both equally interested in the going ons. It was Eclipse who spoke first, eyeing his wings. "I know your scent but not you. Do you live with the scale human too?" Rave nodded in response, and Eclipse continued. "Do you know why they brought us here? From all the scents, it seems like this is a playground, but we have plenty of things back home. Is this just an adventure?"
"Probably. I mean, we have real trees back home, even if that looks fun." He glanced at the pachee tree, and a few of the toys scattered on the floor. Yes, the balls containing bells and the feathers on sticks looked tempting, but...it was nothing compared to a crunchy flower.
Aura sighed. When the shop opened, they'd have to do anything for fun at night, and the Panther would be most of that. Until they could afford robots, they were going to have to step back from gardening and going out exploring. Once they had a butler bot, however...

"Maybe it's not that, then. They don't seem to be paying attention to us, though." Eclipse glanced over at Aura, and then back at Rave. Her purple eyes almost matched his markings; he didn't smell like her, so they weren't related, but it was an attractive combination. He also smelled of milk and youth and the fresh bedding of the hutch back home. It was comforting, and this place smelled like it was intended to be inviting, too... "I've heard from other critters that sometime the scale human just brings us with them when they go places. Maybe this isn't for us, and it's just a place for them to be, and we got to come along?"
That sounded like it made sense. He nodded, giving a flutter of his wings. "Yes, that sounds right. So what's your area of the garden like, where you sleep? I haven't seen you before, so you must stay somewhere different..."
Aura chewed on the end of their pencil. The bots weren't overly expensive, if they remembered, and they already had a model that would work for the theme of the cafe. They didn't need a custom color or anything. They added up their recent expenses- 1500 credits for pachee, another 400 for the plasma golem...they had less than 100 credits left.

"It's this room that's right next to the garden. There's a bunch of plants in pots, and chairs and pillows...we all kinda sleep on the pillows or on shelves and look out at the flowers. We've seen other pachee wandering out there sometimes with Aura." She said cheerfully, giving a slow sway of her tail. "What about you?"
He blinked, realizing he knew where she stayed. "Oh! I live in that white building over by the small trees. We've seen that shaded screened area you're talking about, and I've smelled you all sometimes when the wind is right...It's so interesting. We live so close and yet we've never met. I wonder why the scaled one keeps us separated when they clearly want us to share the same space? And why they're letting us be together now?" It was a mystery, as it always was the first time pachee were brought here when they never had been before. After that, everything made more sense, but the ssashirk kept getting those fresh to the process.
They chewed their pencil a bit more. With a little over a hundred credits, they could buy a robot and automate the shop so that they only had to work it themself when they had spare time. It would allow them to, potentially, even make the shop 24 hours.

The white building...They frowned, trying to picture it. Suddenly, they remembered it. It was like a shed, with a little screened in section to one side, and she'd often seen the scurrying of bodies on the other side of the screen. Come to think of it, she had seen pachee going in and out of it every now and again- ones like the one in front of her. "I've smelled you when I'm out in the yard and seen your silhouette in the shed. You're right, though, keeping us separated seems like a choice. Why is it different now?" Eclipse considered this, moving closer to sniff at Rave's wings, mostly out of curiosity. She didn't devote her entire brain to what appeared to be a non-important matter.
When she moved closer, he finally saw it- the tiny little slit on her forehead that he hasn't noticed before. He finally realized she lacked pollen pods on her tail. "Wait...I think... I think Echo was trying to talk to me about this at one point," he vocalized, slowly.
Aura wrote down the rough plan. Work the front desk until they made those credits, and as soon as they bought the robot, they could focus on only being at the desk during peak times...and for restocking the kitchen, coming up with new recipes to teach.

"What do you mean?" Eclipse asked, staring at the wings the same color of her eyes. They were so, so pretty...
"Echo was the only pachee there besides me until recently. He told me at some point, if Aura ever took me to a place that smelled like kittens and pollen, that..." Rave fluttered his wings. He suddenly knew exactly why he was here, and Eclipse's presence made him...Nervous. He eyed her, his tail giving a nervous vibration. No pollen shook itself loose, yet. Despite both his inexperience and Eclipse's, they were both here, and at least he knew what was going on. A quick glance at the still disinterested Aura solidified the thought in his mind. "This is where kittens are formed. You and I are kept separate because the pollen from my tail will give you your own kits." He was surprised that there was barely a tremor in his voice as he delivered that news.
They already knew what to bake and mix together for the first few drinks and baked goods, so that took care of that. It was hard to plan an exact schedule when they didn't know when they'd be able to pass off the responsibilities of the shop onto a robot. At least they had a roommate to make sure the pachee got fed...

"Oh. So how does that work?" Eclipse asked. She finally looked up from his wings, and felt the grass 'wings' on her back vibrate a bit. She had no idea what she was in for, but what could be so bad about growing kittens of her own? She didn't remember much except snuggling up to Honey, having her ears bathed. She, her sister, and Nexus had all arrived around the same time. As a result, only Honey could have prepared her for any of this. At least Rave had some kind of information.
"Well, um. I'm not exactly sure how it works on your end, but Echo said I'd have to dislodge some of my pollen, and then they'll take me home and at some point, kittens." Rave tried to explain. Mainly, he just felt strange having this conversation and the expectation that had been placed upon them. What if they hadn't liked one another...? Maybe Aura had some kind of understanding of who worked well together, since Eclipse's presence was making him nervous...
Speaking of, that was another priority. They needed to buy more of the empty land around their home so that they had more space to expand for creatures. 'Look into costs for a farm', they scribbled into the margins.

"Well, then it seems like we should start with the part you do know?" Eclipse suggested. She started nudging his tail with her head, and he shifted, the tiny little strands on which the pollen was contained vibrating with his nerves. The first few pieces of it started to fall, and then more, floating in the air like a cloud in response to both anxiety and, well... They functioned like a dust ball. Once they were starting to crumble, all of the pollen fell apart from one another rapidly, completely missing off of his tail. Predictably, since she was so close, Eclipse ended up with most of it on her fur- but as much of it as was actually needed ended up being received, mercifully without any getting into her eyes. Bless the third eyelid on pachee, Aura would suppose.
Noticing that they'd, in fact, done what they'd been brought to do, they closed their notebook and stood up. They scooped both of the pachee into their carriers, and cleaned the room up once again. No, it wasn't their job- they had staff for that- but it was the polite thing to do after using the room for basically free. Even then, they couldn't clean it perfectly, but they saved some time for the people who could.
