Fiera was back again at the Abandoned Pets Adoption Agency. Zazzle, her last adoptee, had been a great success. Well, for him at least. At that moment, he was safe and sound at the kennel, having been taught a variety of tricks, including the gift of flight. Needless to say, Fiera was very satisfied with his progress, and hoped that his success was enough for her to be allowed to adopt another pet so soon. You see, she had become quite interested lately in the variety of breedable pets around the labs. She had just recently made her foray into orbaru breeding, but apparently they weren't alone. She had heard of another breedable species, called 'Pachee', and had come to the APAA to see if they had any to spare. As it stood, she was in luck. Matthew pointed her down towards the companion animals, being sure to give her an ID number to work with.

ID number 0152, creature name 'Peril'. She snorted. It was an awfully ominous name for a creature that looked so cute. Well, they did in the photos she had seen at least. Pachee were adorable little critters, brown with green rosettes, only a couple feet long, but were actually more plant than animal. They had tails that could produce pollen, and ovum in their foreheads of all places. Apparently, their fertility came from that fact. Each male pachee produced more pollen than he knew what to do with. Females on the other hand were quite rare, but if one was able to come across one, the amount of pollen they could contain was more than enough to produce at least a couple offspring. As a result, pachee breeding was a popular pasttime in The Labs, and Fiera was looking to break into it. As she opened the door to the 'companion critters' room, she hoped to find a worthy addition to her kennel.

Number 0152, number 0152... ah! There it was! She peered into the cage and... oh my, that wasn't like the photos. With Zazzle, where she had no clue what an 'inkrum' was to start with, and had been very surprised by what she had found. From what Matthew had described, she was expecting something soft, fluffy, and elegant. Instead she found an awkward bug-bird-turtle with fluffy ears and a bad attitude. Still, once he had stopped headbutting her, he had charmed her enough that she couldn't help but take him home. Peril, on the other hand, was quite different. All the pictures she had seen of pachee showed off earthy colors and mottled coloration. Peril, on the other hand, was a stark surprising white. Light green markings were dappled across his back, and the tufts of grass upon his shoulder faded out to a light yellow as you got closer to the tip.

He was, in a word, completely unexpected, and incredibly gorgeous. Fiera had to have him... but she supposed that came down to him wanting to go with her, now didn't it. Right now, the pachee seemed plastered to the back of the cage, at about eye level with Fiera. The cages in here were all for smaller, sweeter creatures, and Peril's one was about at eye level. Fiera on occasion felt little swipes across her front from other animals trying to say hi. Fiera ignored them though- she was sure they'd be adopted by someone else later. Peril, on the other hand, didn't seem quite so social. In fact, his name seemed to be less to intimidate, and more a description of his emotional state. His ears were flattened down on his head, and his tail was drawn protectively against his front. It was clear he didn't want anything to do with anyone.

Unfortunately, she couldn't use her regular technique of "just feed it a lot of food to make it feel better" like she did to get Zazzle's attention, as pachee didn't have mouths or any way to eat traditionally. They were bizarre animals, more plant than anything. They got most of their energy from the sun, and got nutrients from the soil. Similarly, they got diseases like plants did too, needing careful combinations of weed killers and fungicides to keep them healthy if they got sick. If they ate anything at all, it was by mashing up berries or whatever food was being offered and absorbing the resulting mashup through their feet... or, er, roots. Fiera had the feeling that Matthew wouldn't like her making that kind of mess in here, especially if she didn't intend to stick around to clean it up. Which meant that she would... god forbid... have to be nice.

"Hi there, little guy...!" She cooed into the cage, wiggling a finger at him. The pachee only further backed away, flattening his ears. "Oh come on now, don't be like that." She said gently. "I'm nice, I promise!" Peril hunched over, glaring at her angrily. He had been through a lot, she would have to guess. She wasn't sure what he had been through, what had happened to him, but pachee were normally such sweet creatures. "Come on, come here! I'll give you scritches!" Peril wasn't having it, and slapped his tail on the floor of his cage threateningly, sending a small poof of pollen into the air. It flew into Fiera's face and she backed away, coughing. Man, that stuff STUNG when it got into ones eyes. She groaned, and looked back into the cage. Peril looked quite pleased with himself, having fought off a dangerous "predator" all by himself.

Fine then. She leaned against the stack of cages instead. If Peril wasn't responding well to outright affection, then maybe apathy would work. It was a viable technique, even if it took longer. Being in a pet's presence without attacking it, bothering it, talking to it, could help it get used to one's presence. By doing that, the pet could approach at its own speed and pace. It would have the chance to get used to someone just being there. So that was what she did, just letting Peril take her in. Sure enough, after a couple minutes, she heard a faint sniffing noise. Could he be investigating her, finally? She didn't dare turn around, for the fear of scaring the pachee. With one ear turned behind her though, she could tell that Peril had come away from the back of the cage, and was sniffing a little bit closer.

After a moment, she felt a bit of movement in her hair, and the sniffing noise got even louder. Fiera couldn't help but smile- if he was a creature that had a mouth, he would no doubt be chewing on her hair right now. Instead, he was just taking little locks of hair and sticking his face in them, examining the new stimuli. She turned slightly, and heard him skitter away. She turned all the way around, and just stood there, not talking or trying to stick her fingers in again, just hanging out. Peril stared at her, ears back, but when he realized she wasn't doing anything, he seemed to slowly relax. Sure enough, he crept forward again, still cautious with his tail held high, but making progress as he came closer and closer to the front of the cage. He sniffed the air ahead of him, curious now. She didn't move, and he came for her hair again.

After a few minutes of Peril just checking her out, she decided to try something else. She brought her hand up and placed some of her fingers through the bars. She wasn't trying to touch him, but was instead intending to give him another part of her he could sniff. He jolted away at first, skittering back so she couldn't touch him... but slowly realized that wasn't her intent. He snuck toward her again, crouching as if he was stalking prey, and sniffed her fingers. She had done her nails just this morning, and her sharp claws were currently a bright cherry red. The fresh paint must smell interesting, she realized, as Peril certainly seemed interested. "Hey there, buddy..." She whispered, and he barely flinched this time. Soon, he had shoved his head right into Fiera's fingers, taking each one in his paws to investigate. She wiggled them a bit, and he didn't even move, trying to hold them still.

Finally, she moved her fingers in a scritching motion, just barely scraping him on the chest. He seemed to think about it for a second, but soon relaxed as she gave his chest a once over. He didn't seem to NOT enjoy it, and soon she was able to move her fingers up through the bars, catching him below the chin. He closed his eyes, and leaned into it a bit. Fiera smiled. "Not so bad once you try it, huh?" The pachee only shoved his head into her fingers in response, his 'wings' flapping happily. Thoroughly convinced, Fiera took her fingers away once more. Peril slapped his tail a couple times, upset at the scratchy nails being removed, but didn't release more pollen. Fiera had removed them, of course, to fill out his adoption paperwork. Now that he wasn't terrified of her, he would be a welcome addition to Fiera's kennel.
Silver: Don't stress it, whatever you do! They're not too expensive. :3

Sevyrn: ... Silv, you're an absolute angel. Like seriously. Consider it replaced as soon as I'm done in Nature's Bounty, though. I'd feel bad about just taking it from you.

Sevyrn: Getting in to orbarus first, have half a breeding written up already just gotta get my hands on some baby berries first. But I'm gonna see if anything comes out of houlou in the future. Who knows, I could like them more than orbs.

Fiera Ferella: Oh that's awesome!!! I love breedables too, and houluh have been such a fun addition to that.
Aug 11, 2020 10:58:30 GMT -6
Sevyrn: I have two from when they were first released, so I figured why not give it a shot now that there's something to really do with them. Plus breedables. I love breedables.
