Inyala gripped Ashe's shoulder tightly as the man lurched out toward the stream himself. He didn't know if Ichka could swim or not and he didn't want to find out, not here and not right now. Ichka splashed around, startled and spooked and trying to find out which way was up. Though his wings being tethered shouldn't have had an effect on his swimming ability, the restraints felt a little more intense and worried him as well. But Ashe quickly arrived on the scene, going to knee deep water without thinking about his boots, socks, or feet getting soaked. He reached in, scooping up the writhing mass of Paogon, and dragged him to the shore, where he deposited him on a soft patch of dirt.
"Idiot. That wasn't worth it, was it?" But this was said with affection, and Ashe scratched under his jaw. "Don't do that, goofball."
Maybe he would listen a little bit better from now on.
The trio started their trip again, this time going over the bridge and continuing on the other side. Ashe did have to say the command two more times, but each time the reaction to it was instant, and even during the walk he noticed the Paogon paying closer attention to Ashe instead of to the distractions. When they'd come to a pause for a moment's rest, Inyala climbed down Ashe and stood in front of the Paogon, offering him a berry. He did good!

Time to head back for some lunch for himself and Inyala. He may say lunch, but to a normal person it might be a snack. He had a few pieces of fruit - a banana, an apple, a couple of those small oranges, grapes - and that was a meal for Ashe. He might have a steak for dinner, but otherwise he didn't eat too much. He didn't have the time or the interest to cook for himself or take the time to sit down and eat an actual meal. Sometimes his love cooked him something, and that was sweet. She wasn't here today, off doing her own thing, so it was up to Ashe to feed himself. Treats for his pets, and fruit for himself.
With a grunt, he sat his butt down on the ground, looping the leash end around his wrist so he could have both hands free. He peeled an orange and started to eat it. He took his time, and fed Inyala some pieces. She gobbled them up, and supplemented with a couple of stolen berry treats from the bag. Ichka played wth some blades of grass, a leaf, and ate some ants.
The quiet moment was over too soon and Ashe had to start training again. "Let's see..." Ashe pulled out a second piece of paper, another assignment from his Guild.
"Let's start with lay down... Do you know how to lay down?" He looked at Ichka. He said the dragon's name, and he looked up finally. Hm. Low to the ground. Should still be able to learn this..."Lay down, Ichka." He patted the ground in front of the dragon.

Ichka looked at Ashe quizzically, not understanding. It was cool that Ashe was down here on his level, patting the ground, and he would like to keep the human here. Maybe play a little bit or something? He leaned forward and down, his tail lifting into the sky a little bit, like a cat trying to get ready to pounce. He eyed Ashe carefully, wondering if this would be a game.
"No, Ichka." Ashe frowned as Ichka immediately straightened. He regretted using that word as a command, and would have to use something else when talking normally... He reached out and scratched his chin, sorry that he had shut down his game of fun with such finality. "Sorry, buddy. Nah. Is that better? Nah, I said lay down," He tried again. He patted the ground in front of the dragon. Ichka leaned forward slightly, then more so when Ashe didn't scold him again. Ashe waited, watching, seeing how low he would go in his playful lean... Then he clicked the clicker and slipped him a berry. Excited, Ichka hopped up like a puppy.
Since Ashe was going to be on the ground and leaning over the Paogon, Inyala didn't want to be thrown off so she climbed down and settled in the grass a few yards off, close if Ashe needed her, but far enough away to not get tumbled.

"Lay down," Ashe said again, motioning for Ichka to lay on the ground. He patted the grass in front of the dragon, and said it again. Ichka leaned forward a bit, remembering that he'd gotten a treat before, but no treat came this time. He looked up as Ashe's hand was suddenly in front of him, but down on the ground. He reached his neck, trying to cheat and not bend his body down, but just use his neck. The hand closed around the treat, stopping him from getting to it. He made a sound of dislike and tried again. Closed again. He tried a few different angles, and the hand not only ended up staying closed, but moved forward. He tried to take a step forward, and the man made a negative sound; Ichka planted his feet where they were.
He had to find a new tactic. He leaned forward, and his neck wasn't long enough, and Ashe corrected him each time he tried to move his legs... So eventually, he stretched so far that he was laying on the ground. Trying hard not to, because that was the instinct when you reached for something, but Ashe seemed to like it. He was rewarded.
Inyala watched on, waiting to be useful again. This was just silly... Why did Ashe want him to learn this anyway?

Ashe repeated this process, geting him to stretch so far and down so low that his belly ended up laying on the ground. Ashe would reward when he touched the ground, and not before. Slowly, he could almost hear the gears turning in Ichka's head as he was putting two and two together. Ground - good. Ground - reward. So, when Ashe said, "Lay down," and Ichka, on his own, went to the ground and laid on his belly, the man practically cheered. Both with joy and relief! Because he'd started to think the Paogon might never get it. Why were the simple things so hard to teach?
Gee, I dunno, maybe because you decided to train a creature whose belly is already so close to the ground? A vulticus would be easier. Hell, an Equillion would even be easier.
Ashe shook his head to silence his inner monologue and gave the Paogon an extra treat, showing he was extra pleased with him. He wasn't the only one who was excited; Inyala jumped up and down in her own celebration. So the dragon wasn't all dumb! Finally! The Paogon squawked happily and munched, moving to a sitting position. Maybe he should try that next! "Sit!" Ashe said, seeing him in that position and taking advantage.

The Paogon started to move, curious what this word meant. Lay down again? "Sit!" Ashe said, quickly. The urgency in his voice caused the Paogon to freeze and sit back on his haunches, startled. "Good boy, good Sit!" Ashe hurried to reward him, patting him on the head and then running his hand down his back, resting on his rear, adding a bit of pressure to keep him seated. "Sit," He said, hoping he could get the point across while he was here. He said it again, then gave the Paogon a treat.
Ichka seemed to think that he was going to just keep getting fed treats if he sat like this, like fattening up a chicken that couldn't move. That wasn't the plan, unfortunately, and Ashe ended up saying familiar words. "Lay down." But Ichka was happy here, this was so much easier, and that required moving! "Ichka, lay down." Nope, this was just fine - "Lay. Down." Oh, alright... Ichka made a show of stretching out his forelimbs and sliding onto his belly. Ashe gave him a pat on the head as a reward, and lots of kind words. Man, this wasn't nearly as fun.
Inyala gave a little chirp, almost as if she was scolding the creature when he refused to lay down. He -knew- that command! Then she went quiet and supportive when he finally laid down.

"Sit." Right back at it. Ashe waited for Ichka to respond, but the Paogon continued laying down, hoping for a treat this way. He was going to get such a fat belly with all of this, if Ashe wasn't careful! Then there would be no laying down because he would always be, technically, laying down. "Come on, you just did it. Sit!" The Paogon shifted and Ashe held his breath, hoping it would get the hint. Nope. But that was an improvement over laying there like a dead fish. "Sit." Ashe said. Over and over, a few more times, progressively more firm. Finally, he got a treat out and held it aloft, so the Paogon would have to move to reach it. Finally, Ichka did get up, moving just to a sitting position instead of standing. The least amount of movement, the better the option.
"Good boy! Good sit!" Ashe praised, letting him have the treat in his hand. The Paogon gobbled it up, looking pleased with himself. "Now lay down." The Paogon, to his credit, laid down. He seemed to be mastering that command, at least. Now Ashe just had to hope the same good fortune followed the sit command.
Inyala was growing bored. Back and forth, sit and lay down, sit and lay down. She wanted to do something. At least in the Mines, she had something to watch.

It was time to switch things up. After one more try of "sit" and "lay down," Ashe was convinced for sure that his Paogon knew the lay down command, and was pretty good with the sit one. But what if he changed it up, would he still know the latter? So Ashe got up, dusted off his pants, and called for Inyala. She scrambled over, pretending she knew nothing about the small scorched circle of grass she'd just vacated (Hey, a bored Imp was as good as the devil's plaything! Right?) and climbed up her Master's back to reach his shoulder. "We're gonna go for a walk," Ashe said. Go for a walk, and then get to training some messenger things. He wanted a harness for Ichka, and maybe he could use the chubby dragon to send messages to Vixen. Professions of love, or booty calls in the middle of the night, Ashe wasn't sure yet.
"With me," Ashe said. He had to choose the command carefully, since he'd already botched up the No one. No one could have expected a pet to take the negative word so bad, it wasn't his fault surely. Most pets just knocked it off, no feelings hurt.
"With me!" Ashe called again, stopping when he realized the dragon was still sitting there. He patted his leg to get his attention.

"With me!" Ashe pulled out his secret weapon; a treat. He held it high for Ichka to see, and waved it around to get his attention. Finally, the Paogon seemed to realize he was getting left behind and not on purpose. He waddled along after Ashe, looking a little clumsy on land like that. He was much better flying, just like a bird Ashe figured. And technically, Ichka could follow along in the air behind him like how his Shijin did, but since Ashe wanted to periodically check the 'sit' command, land would be easier. Plus, he didn't know the fly command just yet.
"Good boy, come With Me!" Ashe said to him, cheerfully, and tossed him the treat. He put another treat in his emptied hand and showed it to Ichka for motivation. "With me!" He said, as he continued walking down the path. Inyala clung to his shoulder, peering over at the Paogon waddling along after. This trick might be easier than the other two, especially lay down, since it was easily motivated by food and natural movement - ie, he naturally wanted to follow Ashe when he had a treat! Then they could be done with this and work on something else.
"With me!" Ashe said periodically, tossing him a treat when Ichka followed along behind him. Until, finally, the switch up- "Sit!" And the Paogon paused, confused at the change, then sat.

"Good boy. Good sit." Ashe gave him a treat, then immediately followed with a "With me!" Ichka barely had time to get up before Ashe was walking again. He scrambled after the human, more for the treats and rewards and to not be left behind at this point. Ashe didn't mind the reason; whatever got him up and moving! "With me," He repeated, slipping him a treat once Ichka had caught up again. They walked for a while, until Ashe suddenly said "Sit!" And Ichka's butt flopped onto the ground, tail swishing in the dirt. When Ashe didn't immediately reward him, he gave an indignant squawk, lifted his butt, and sat again. Ashe couldn't help but laugh, a big hearty laugh. That little dragon! He tossed him an extra treat.
They repeated this over and over across a quarter mile distance. Sometimes, Ashe would continue walking even after the Paogon sat, only to return and give him a pat on the head and a lot of nice words. He couldn't reward with treats forever, could he? So he was also weaning him off those treats. Eventually, without a missed beat on the 'sit' commands, Ashe was getting convinced he'd learned it pretty well. And he was keeping up with him with the follow command as well. Overall, Ashe was pleased. Except for the fact that his ear was becoming sore, thanks to an impatient Imp on his shoulder that kept nibbling.

Ashe was pretty confident that he had gotten the 'sit' command under control, now he just needed a little more encouraging for the follow command. "With me," Ashe said, rousing Ichka from the seated position he was currently in. The Paogon gave a squawk sound, and stood up, starting to follow Ashe. The man started walking, without giving the Sit command. He didn't want the two to be linked at all in the Paogon's mind, though it had been easier to bounce the learning curve off of them both. So now he was walking around the park, up and over hills, across streams...
Occasionally, Ichka would squawk and sit his butt down. He had gotten a little spoiled with the treats, as Ashe had feared, and was trying to demand his fair share by doing exactly what Ashe had requested of him all those times before. It wasn't working! Whenever he did this, Ashe would repeat the command, "Follow me," and they would continue. Ichka would haul himself up to his feet and follow after him.
One of their long successful walks, with a lack of a pause for Ichka to whine like a baby, Ashe murmured to Inyala, asking her to go scout around for some berries. This was long and tedious and he both felt bad for boring her, and also felt like this was a waste when he could be having her do something productive. She gave him a look, but nodded.

Inyala left Ashe with the Paogon, to go find some berries or something else that might interest her master. She had a task to do and she enjoyed having something to do when so much of this life was 'sit on Ashe's shoulder' and 'do nothing but look pretty'. Ashe should really have her forage some more, or scout something. She would be careful not to go too far, of course - it hurt her like it hurt him, when they were too far apart. She was decent at feeling their bond, like a tether.
Ashe watched her go, then noticed Ichka moved to follow after her, thinking that following the little blue Imp was much more exciting than whatever Ashe was doing. Which was absolutely nothing! However, the man caught him before he could go too far and said the command again. "With me!" He said it firmly, but without raised volume. He wasn't yelling at the Paogon, just simply repeating the command again. And once more, because the Paogon hesitated. Ashe sighed softly, having thought the little dragon had picked this up so quickly so perfectly, just to find that instead it was only because there was a lack of distractions. So now, Ashe decided to try to find all the distractions he could. He led him along streams, through the deeper woods, trying to find animals or at least butterflies for the Paogon to chase after. And he did, a few times, with Ashe always calling him back with the command.

Finally, at last, the Paogon seemed to be getting the idea. Ashe had given them both a break and had returned to the place he always came to to train his creatures, and he was sitting with his Paogon in the grass. Ashe was munching on a piece of Murp jerky, tossing pieces to Ichka. He was doing a pretty good job now, if Ashe did say so himself. The little dragon might be able to go from a complete derp to a, well, pudgey dragon with some focus! They had a long way to go, and the basics were a great way to get started on this process. They would have to eventually upgrade to more exciting stuff... But for now, this would do.
Once their break was over, Ashe said, "With me," and stood up. He walked down the hill, trying to listen and quickly hearing the scrambling little feet of the Paogon following after him. He smiled to himself, pleased. Now to run through all of the commands, making sure he could remember each one individually and not just because the most recent was still in his mind.

"Stay..." Ashe said suddenly, holding up a hand. The Paogon stopped and looked up at him, head cocking to the side. Ashe backed away; Ichka stayed. "Good boy, Ichka!" So Ashe beckoned with a finger next. "C'mere!" The Paogon scurried over to Ashe, who patted him on the head and praised him some more. "Lay down." And the Paogon laid down, taking a couple of seconds to stretch his chunky feet out in front of him, furling his wings as he did.
"With me." He started walking. The Paogon flopped over, rolled to his feet, and scrambled after Ashe, who rewarded him with a treat. "Such a good boy!" That was that! He couldn't think of another way to test the Paogon's ability and loyalty.
Speaking of loyalty, Inyala was making her return. He felt her presence before he saw her; she was small enough she could hide pretty well in the shrubs and small bushes. But he knew she was approaching, and stood still to wait for her. When she arrived, she stood before her master and presented him with her open hands, in which there were a few berries and one shiny black stone. Was that a piece of Onyx? Ashe took the gifts and murmured his thanks to her. He popped a berry into his mouth, offered Inyala one, and pocketed the stone. He quite liked it!

He wasn't quite sure how he'd accomplished such a task, because now the walking corpse didn't seem to respond to much. He still glanced up at his name, so whatever Ashe had done in the past (perhaps just repetition for days and weeks on end?) had worked wonderfully. Now he was here to try to teach him some other moves, get him to a point where he could defend himself. Not that the corpse seemed to care too much about that sort of thing; when something got too close, Reoz whipped around with surprising speed and either ate the offending creature, or swiped at it with a long bony arm. Ashe had found that out the hard way, narrowly avoiding being knocked flat just by the speed of his instincts. Reoz shambled along behind Ashe, moving slowly and unmotivated. The Corpse knew enough to follow Ashe, and cared not for the speed such a task required. Watching him move was almost like watching a tank's tire tread move at a very slow pace. It took that much effort for the corpse to move forward. Here they were at the park on a chilly autumn day. With his trusty familiar perched on his shoulder, and the festering mound of flesh in front of him, Ashe was on top of the world. Time to get down and dirty.
