The trip to the docks was long, but relatively uneventful. She was amazed, honestly. The labs really did have everything, didn’t it? A city, a countryside, mines, and even a massive lake, all in walking distance. Or so she thought. Apparently, while it was POSSIBLE to walk to the lake, it really wasn’t adviseable, and while Fiera had left in the morning, it was now mid-afternoon and she still hadn’t arrived yet. It was just a long, long walk on a crumbling sidewalk, staring enviously at the cars sliding by. The cars with their no doubt delightful A/C and speedy wheels. It wasn’t all that hot out today actually, but several hours of walking was enough to make anyone break a sweat, and Fiera was no exception. She knew there’d be public water fountains at the dock, she’d have to survive to get there first, and refill her dry water bottles.

And if Fiera was feeling bad, oh man, Serine felt even worse. Serine was her offspring tilvander- a mix between a spotted custom one, and one of the lava dwellers. As a result, she was very pretty. She had a deep black background, like the dimness of a cave, freckled with patches of bright red, like bubbling lava. Her natural bioluminescence meant that some of those patches even glowed, like real lava. She was a beautiful creature, and seemed to know it. In terms of personality, Serine was appropriately prissy, being notoriously picky with her food, slow to get along with the other tilvanders, and quick to resort to temper tantrums. She was a little princess, but Fiera could respect that. Fiera was much the same way after all, with an appreciation for the bright and shiny things in life, along with the soft and luxurious.

Unfortunately, all that led up to this being a rather disastrous experience for the pair of them. When they started out, Serine was perfectly happy to strut along behind Fiera, in attractive, undulating movements. She was a pretty creature, and proud to show it. As they went along however, Serine started to...dry out a bit in the sun. It wasn’t exactly dangerous for her, as her lava tilvander ancestry kept her safe from particularly high temperatures, but it did make her miserable. At first, her slime was slick and watery, almost unnoticeable to the average person, and dried out in seconds. Now however, it was thick and incredibly sticky, needing a thorough washing take get out. Unfortunately, Serine had decided halfway through that she no longer wanted to walk either, which meant that Fiera was now stuck carrying a very large, very heavy Tilvander, and getting absolutely drenched in slime.

So here she was, walking down a long road, covered in slime, and so wrapped up in amphibian flesh that you’d think it was the latest fashion. She supposed it kept Serine from running away. She didn’t know any tricks yet after all, and her slick body meant that she could wiggle out of any leash, so if Serine decided to take for the hills, Fiera would never find her again. Thankfully, in this condition she wasn’t liable to go anywhere, though Fiera’s tank top and shorts were undoubtably ruined. She couldn’t even take comfort in the cold skin of a tilvander being nice for the heat. Due to Serine being part lava tilvander, she was actually pretty warm blooded in comparison to her kin, with heat fed by a flame in her belly. That of course, made her heavy, sticky, AND humid. Just what Fiera loved best.

This was of course, all on top of the fact that Fiera was holding a bag with all of her training supplies in it as well. Her shoulders screamed with protest as Serine adjusted herself, placing her head at the back of Fiera’s neck. Finally, Fiera saw it- “Loch Glânda-Lynn, next exit.” Thank god, they were nearly there. She kept on trekking, flip flops slapping the concrete. At least Fiera wasn’t the type to get blisters. Small blessings. As she turned, she saw numerous wooden buildings come into view, and a familiar smell. That scent was, of course, water, which she knew quite well by now, due to her experiences in the mansion. Her closeness gave her some fresh pep in her step, and she practically trotted down toward the buildings, taking them in. It looked like mostly warehouses here, but she had heard there were beaches for training.

Now if only she could find the beaches. This area was proving to be a lot more complex than she thought. The buildings seemed to be mostly warehouses, with the occasional long dock for the shipyards, with massive sailing ships and a couple steam sitting in the harbor. It was a beautiful view, but unfortunately, not the one Fiera wanted. Still, at least now that they were closer to the beach, the air was cooler. The cooler water brought a fantastic breeze across the shoreline, washing over Fiera and Serine. The tilvander sat up a bit, pushing her face into the wind, scenting the air. They were both glad for the distraction and the relief. Still, they had a bit longer to journey before Fiera could actually get to work, and Serine wasn't getting any lighter. So she continued, flip flopping her way along the docks, looking for any spit of sand.

Eventually, she spotted it- no, not a beach, but a water fountain. She ran to it as fast as her flip flops would allow, and immediately yanked a water bottle off of her backpack. She struggled with the cap for a moment before popping it off and stuck it under the stream of cool, fresh water. Serine perked up upon seeing it, her antennae rising, and pushed Fiera away with her front legs before rushing down the humanish's body. She then stuck her head in the water, nosing the water bottle out of the stream. "Hey! Come on, you'll get some water soon, there's a whole damn lake!" Fiera protested, but Serine refused to budge. Fiera sighed loudly and waited until the Tilvander had drunken her fill, returning to her perch around her body. "You good now? Done stealing all the water? Ok cool, thanks Serine." Fiera said, nonplussed. What a brat.

Finally, Fiera was able to refill her water bottles, making sure each one was up to the brim. Dehydration was no joke, after all. Then, she drank her fill herself, smiling with schadenfreude at how Serine had to reposition herself in order to avoid smacking into the water fountain. When both were thoroughly rehydrated, Fiera started out again, admiring her environment with more appreciation, now that she wasn't dying of thirst. The lake was beautiful- and huge. She could only barely see the far shore, as a thin pale line. It was by far the largest body of water she had ever seen, though she had read about lakes and oceans before. Serine didn't seem quite as impressed. Perhaps that was because she lived in water all the time and so didn't find it interesting, or maybe because she just didn't want to give Fiera the idea that she was enjoying herself.

Soon, Fiera managed to spot a sign- a traffic style sign, with 'training beaches, 0.3 mi' printed on it, followed by an arrow. Finally, a bit of direction. She happily followed it, turning onto a dirt path off of the main docks. The nature here was incredible too. Fiera wasn't much for natural spaces usually. They were far too dirty and uncomfortable for her tastes, and travelling from her hometown to The Labs had put her off of it forever. Or...so she thought. The forests alongside the lake were surprisingly pleasant, with pine trees blocking the hot sunlight coming in from overhead, and covering the ground in soft pine needles, making it less hard on her feet. It was quieter than the city too. Even though she was a couple dozen feet away, she could hear the waves of the lake washing up on the shore from here.

Finally, the forest opened up to a beautiful beach, and Fiera sighed with relief. The long trek was finally over! The sands were mottled grey, with several rocks thrown in, but she wasn't expecting it to look just like a movie. The waves that washed up were calm and dark, and in several spots the beach curved inward to form tide pools. Several people were already there, training a variety of aquatic pets. Or... mostly aquatic pets, she thought was a fish flew overhead. One trainer looked like they were just shouting at the water, until a massive shape surged offshore, and she realized they were giving commands to a leviathan of a pliathor. Fiera rushed past these people, giving polite nods when she accidentally made eye contact, but otherwise trying to avoid them. Eventually, she came across a secluded tide pool- the water was deep and definitely large enough for Serine, but there was a significant spit of sand too, shielded from prying eyes by a rock wall. Perfect.

Fiera mulled over what to teach Serine first while watching the tilvander get herself situated in the tide pool of the docks. Well, she thought to herself, it was probably best to start right at the bottom- teaching Serine her name. Being able to get her attention by calling her name was the basis of all other tricks- she wouldn’t be able to teach the tilvander anything if she was looking the other way, after all! The real problem was getting Serine to pay attention to anything to start with. She was an awfully prissy creature after all, and that made her stubborn. As a result, she didn’t give her attention to anything that she didn’t feel was worth her time. Unfortunately for Fiera, the humanish usually wasn’t considered to be in the “worth her time” category. Thankfully, Fiera had something that she thought would be...

Fiera set her bag down and started rooting around in it, an action that prompted neither response nor interest from Serine. Instead, the tilvander continued as she was, winding her way around the tide pool and enjoying the cool water on this hot day. Fiera couldn’t blame her, but that meant that she would enjoy what Fiera had to offer even more. She finally managed to wrestle a small cooler out of the bag, setting it on the ground. She tapped it twice. “Serine!” She called, trying to get her attention. As expected, the tilvander pretended to be much more interested in the shells at the side of the pool, flipping them up and examining their undersides. Because of that, Fiera took out her trump card, cracking open the cooler. Inside were several dozen small, frozen fish. Fiera knew for a fact that they were Serine’s favorite type as well.

She pulled one out, cringing a bit at how they were simultaneously slimy and way too cold. On a hot day like today however, Serine would go nuts for them. Fiera waved it around, letting the movement catch the tilvander’s eye, “Seriiiine! Over here!” She shouted, making herself impossible to ignore. Sure enough, Serine spared her at least a glance in her direction before whipping around at the sight of her favorite treat. Upon seeing she got Serine to pay attention, Fiera tosses her the fish, rewarding her for the desired behavior. “Atta girl, Serine!” She said as she tossed it. “Keep it up!” Dignity put aside for the time being, Serine dove into the water where the treat landed, coming up with it in her mouth. She chewed on it lately, cutting through the frozen meat with ease due to her sharp teeth, and soon it was gone.

Fiera smirked. It would seem everyone was weak for their favorite food. Once she was sure that Serine had finished, Fiera prepared to try again. She cupped her hands around her mouth for maximum volume, and rose up on her tip toes. “Serine!” She called again. “Over here, Serine!” Sure enough, Serine ignored her- but it seemed to be more pointed this time as opposed to apathetic, with the tilvander facing away from her precisely. Fiera suspected that she was starting to get a clue, but didn’t want to admit it. Well, she’d just have to fix that. “Ok, Serine!” She said, reaching into the cooler again. “Guess I’ll just have to eat all these fish by myself!” She finished, holding the fish up. The idea of eating a bucket of raw fish grossed her out, but the gambit paid off, and Serine’s head snapped around.
Jack: Thanks for the notice!
