The area around her was deeply forested. It was mostly pine, staying green even in the chilly weather, but the occasional decidious bush still left leaves on the floor. Those leaves had long since gone soggy however, squishing at least an inch deep as she stepped through them. To her right, the lake sprawled out, the docks visible on the southern rim that she was hurrying away from. Remote location, indeed. The sandy beaches were quite visible on the other side, as a grey and white marbled spit of color in the distance. She didn’t dare to get any closer to the beautiful sight however, knowing that between it and her was a steep, rocky drop down to the water. There were no beaches to look forward to on this rim, just bouldered bluffs. The deliverymen promised her that they could handle it, however, so she didn’t worry about their progress.

She could tell she was approaching her desired area when the ground beneath her feet began to slope upward, pointing at the sky. Finally, she crested the hill and looked over a deep gash in the ground. It was almost as if some creature clawed a massive furrow in the shoreline, leaving a deep hole in the ground. The bottom of it was filled with water, deep enough for a creature like Rosaleen to swim around comfortably, but narrow enough at its entrance that Fiera could easily block off the ‘entrance’ to it, leading back into the main lake. Furthermore, the slope was gentle enough that Fiera could walk down and around it easily without spraining an ankle or anything like that. All she had to do was make sure she didn’t dislodge any of the dark, sharp rocks on her way down as she slid down the hill toward the shore.

Fiera glanced around once she got to the bottom. Hm. It would appear she had beaten the deliverymen here, as neither they nor her lasobiel was anywhere to be seen. At least she wouldn’t have to pay the late fee. She decided to get the area prepped while she waited. The humanish scrambled to the lakeside edge of the gash, where it opened up into the water beyond. The deliverymen were supposed to come through here, but she didn’t see them anywhere. Oh well, she supposed. Then, she dropped her pack and started rustling through it, before pulling out a net. She tied one end to a nearby boulder, and then threw the rest of it as hard as she could. Several of the weights on it plunked satisfyingly into the water. Then, she ran around to the other side of the gash. Yes, she could have swum across it, but then again… she was a cat.

Needless to say, she’d be trying to avoid getting in the water for as long as possible. She had a wetsuit on, but it was so COLD and she’d be so WET and it’d be so UNCOMFORTABLE, and ew. By the time she had finished mentally complaining about the idea of swimming however, Fiera was already on the other side of the rocky gulley, and was able to keep herself busy tying off the other end of the net. Whew. It had weights on the bottom and floats on the top- preventing anything (such as an exciteable lasobiel) from swimming through. It was adjustable however- she could deflate the floats and loosen the rope to allow it to sink, letting select objects over her net trap. So it wasn’t llike the deliverymen were going to be stuck outside when they arrived, they’d just have to wait for her to open the net first.

So that was one bit of preparation done. Now for the rest. She ran back to her pack, and got out some more items. A cooler of treats- always needed when training pets. She had yet to find a creature that was not easily bribed with their favorite food. She was sure that Rosaleen would be the same. Then, she had a long metal rod with a mechanical grabby hand and a brightly colored tip. This would be useful for drawing her pet’s attention and hopefully delivering food over long distances, allowing her to stay out of the water. She gave it a few test grasps, just to make sure. Then, she set it aside. Some balls to help get out extra energy, a first aid kit… Fiera had never had to use that one, but she knew it was a bad idea to leave it out. You never knew when you might need emergency medical attention.

Finally, there was Fiera. The catgirl was dressed to swim, but she was hoping to avoid it at all costs. Her feet were in deep galoshes, allowing her to wander into the water if needed while still keeping her dry. Then, she was also wearing a thick full body swimsuit. It was the warmest they had at the store, and hopefully it would keep her warm in the frigid late autumn temperatures. That was another one of her concerns for swimming today- there was a very real chance of hypothermia or frostbite if she wasn’t careful. Rosaleen would be okay, being full of blubber and good vibes, but Fiera wasn’t nearly so well padded. The swimsuit even had an additional pocket for her tail, though she hated how it made her look- it smushed all of her luxurious long fur down! She looked like she had a rat tail, the horror!

Then on her head, she had a swim cap and hood, with pockets for her ears. She couldn’t hear quite as well as usual, but she was sure that wouldn’t be a problem today. It likely just meant that she’d be on the same level as regular people in terms of hearing abilities. Besides, Rosaleen wasn’t exactly a subtle creature- Fiera would likely get the right idea. Overall, she looked… kind of stupid. Fiera really hoped no one would see her like this out here. Nobody but the deliverymen, at least. Where were they, anyway? She scuttled over to her bag, taking her phone out of a waterproof bag she had stashed it in and checking the time. Yes it was definitely past the time they were meant to get here with her pet. How odd. Perhaps they had gotten lost…? But she gave the exact GPS coordinates to this spot.

Fiera tried to busy herself, but it really was getting concerning with how late they were. Ten minutes ticked by, then twenty. She rearranged the rocks around the rim of the gulley, giving her good places to stand where she wasn’t liable to cut her feet open. Then the net was adjusted, making sure it raised and lowered easily. The toys and training machines were arranged along the shore, by size and use and color. Then rearranged. The cooler was checked for function and freshness. She took her hood down and brushed her hair, but thought better about trying to brush her tail. She did a dozen more fiddly bits of busiwork, but still there was no sign of the deliverymen. This was getting... concerning. Fiera whipped out her phone, ready to ring the company and give them an earful. Only when she dialed, she got a distinctive sound.

No signal. She was too far out in the woods- her call wouldn’t go through. She lowered her phone from her ear, putting it to sleep. Then, she took a nice deep breath, fighting the urge to spike her phone against the ground. Great. So her pet was missing, and she couldn’t call and see what happened to her unless she wanted to make the half hour walk back to shore. In which time her things could be washed away or stolen, or the deliverymen could arrive and not be able to find her, rendering the effort useless. Great. What was she supposed to do now then? Head to the docks to try and get signal? Call the cops for pet napping (ok, probably not that one.)? Or wait here and see if they ever decided to show up. She plopped down on a rock, mulling over her options.

Her mind was made up for her soon enough, though. It was a lot easier to sit on a rock and wait than it was to walk until you got cell phone signal, as it turned out, the longer she waited though, the angrier she got. Soon over forty five minutes had passed, and there was still no sign of Rosaleen. Fiera’s thoughts were quickly turning a shade of murderous, an unfortunate habit of hers. While she was busy being lost in a haze of creative punishment techniques however, she missed the distant sound of chugging out on the lake. It was the distinctive sound of a little boat, driven by an engine instead of sails, happily putting along. As it got closer though, Fiera’s wars finally perked up at the sound. Could her delivery service- and her lasobiel- finally be here? She slipped off her perch to see.

Fiera scrambled over to the mouth of the gulley, trying to see across the waves of the lake. She tracked the noise across the waves and sure enough, she could see a little tugboat scooting toward her. Behind it, tied to its pulley, was another boat. And behind THAT was a floating carrier. Fiera has an idea of what was going on here, and she wasn’t happy about it. She waved at the tugboat, trying to get its attention, and saw it turn even further in her direction, heading right for her gulley. The humanish scampered over to her net, not wanting it to get tangled up in the ship’s engine. She relaxed the rope, letting it sink with its weights into the water. The gap was now wide open and ready for the tug boat to come in, its progress across the water’s surface being somewhat slow, but definitely steady.

Fiera was lucky to have found this spot. The lake that the docks jutted into was wide and deep, and it would take the average citizen of the labs weeks to map it all out. That Fiera was able to find the perfect spot to train Isle in was a miracle- and getting the crossbreed there was a second miracle on top of that. It was a little crater lake, an offshoot of the main lake, with high walls all around it. There were some more shallow keyhole slopes that Fierea could use to get down to the water’s level if she wanted, but overall it gave her a bird’s eye view of Isle- which was a very difficult thing to get. The crossbreed was huge- probably the biggest living thing that Fiera had ever had to teach. Training was going to be incredibly difficult as a result.

Which meant of course that she needed every advantage that she could get. Being able to stand above Isle meant that she could hopefully outmaneuver the beast, which would come in handy in teaching it battle moves. That’s what this training session was for, after all- teaching Isle how to hold her own in a fight. Granted, the beast’s massive bulk did most of the work, but that was only good for defense, not offense. Fiera needed to get them to react with an acceptable level of violence. She had a couple of moves in mind to teach them, she just needed to get started. Fiera slipped a face mask on, letting it cover her mouth and nose before scrabbling down the slope, backpack slung across her shoulders. A few moments later she was on the shore, and Isle lifted their head lazily to look at her, blinking idly.

It had taken some doing to get Isle ‘delivered’ here. There was a service that transported large aquatic pets like this from their kennel or holding area to the docks for training, and man was Fiera grateful for it. She couldn’t imagine how she would have gotten the mangrove crossbreed here otherwise, all things considered. That being said though, it looked like Isle had taken to the transport well- they seemed pretty calm and uninjured, and so would probably be receptive to Fiera’s training. That was good- she had a lot planned for today. The first trick she wanted to teach was “spore”, to help Isle shut down any incoming attackers. It wasn’t something hard for Isle to do, but she figured it would be hard to teach her how to do it when ordered. After all, how do you get a plant to release pollen on command?

She was pretty sure that if it was that easy, farmers would have figured it out years ago. Still, Fiera did have SOME idea. Isle might be a crossbreed, but they were part nyssa. Crossbreeds (and most other labs species for that matter) were usually sterile, but some still had the urges. As a result, when male nyssa smelled females’ pheromones, they usually released pollen in response. Well, Fiera had managed to acquire a few bottles of nyssa pheromones, and brought them with her today. Her goal was for Isle to release the spores as well upon exposure to the pheromones, and then Fiera could switch it over to doing it on command. Granted, Isle was only HALF nyssa… but Fiera could hope that it would still work. Besides, she didn’t exactly have any better ideas. With that in mind, she got out the first pheromone bottle, a clear vial filled with a clear liquid.
