It was orbaru breeding time again, and Renathan had sort of been dreading it. However, it was super important that out of all of his pairs, this pair be bred this month. Rafet's last breeding had provided Renathan with exactly what he had wanted; a hyper-focused and very trainable sloth orbaru female. She was quite beautiful too; a gorgeous chocolate hue that Renathan was super pleased with. It had inspired him to choose another male for Rafet this month; and of course this time Renathan wanted a male offspring from her. Males tended to have less strong genes than the female parents on the offspring when it came to personalities, from what Renathan had noticed with his group thus far, so having a male offspring wouldn't really do a whole lot of good for genealogy, but it would be nice to have a brother for the female he already had. The male he had chosen this month was Twix; a male stray orbaru. He had very unique feeling markings; strays were not common to keep. Renathan had to keep an eye on him, because there was a high chance that if given the opportunity, Twix would try to run away. Couldn't have that, now!

The stray, Twix, was generally housed with another stray that Renathan now owned, a female. However, he wasn't planning on breeding the two together probably ever. He felt like their unique markings could definitely be used on other breeding projects instead of producing more of the same. The two were super special, very hard to get, and as such he was super careful with them. Twix was certainly his favorite out of the two, if only because Renathan loved his deep dark chocolate ears. They were especially nice, perhaps with any luck the fellow would pass them on to the offspring? That would be super desirable in fact, especially if that male would pass it in the future, as well. Renathan was on his way to the breeding center, and thankfully the temperature was pretty mild today for one of the last few days of summer. That meant that he probably wouldn't have to be too worried about them overheating on the way. Thankfully, anyway; he'd had a lot of issues going to the breeding center as of lately. Hopefully today would be as calm a day as it was whenever he bred Princess last. Speaking of that, he was planning to do that again this month.

There were so many things that he wanted to do this month. Renathan knew that he was really, actually no scratch that, extremely low on time. However, he was at the very least going to breed Twix and Rafet this morning, and if he could manage it, he wanted to bring Princess back later on during the day. That was if he was lucky and he didn't have anything mysteriously come up today, it would be a big issue if it did. Of course, he technically had tomorrow off, but he wanted to get stuff worked on then too, so he needed to make the most out of both days. Renathan found himself mumbling to himself as he went forward, towards the breeding center. He wasn't sure if he was going to have time to do what he needed to do. He carried each orbaru under his arms, one under each actually, as he carefully picked his way through the deserted street. This time of year there were always less people out, as it would seem that seasonal depression tended to hit during the summer; and well, people started getting busy toward the fall for sure. It was true for Renathan as well.

Renathan hadn't been doing very well this year overall, in all honesty. He had an issue in the beginning of the year where he had let the cold get to him; he wasn't used to it and he had missed home. There was not much that he could do about it other than stay at home, and he had gotten sick as well. All of that had sucked, and it really only got worse from there. This had been his toughest year at the labs city yet, and he hoped that into the winter, he would be able to keep himself happier this go around. He hoped that the next year was going to be much better for him. Of course, the pit issue with Shy Guy had just about ruined everything for him, but he'd forced himself due to his job to keep working. That was the most important thing. However, Renathan really wanted to do better starting now, the best that he could. So he picked himself up with a bit of renewed vigor; going faster towards the breeding center. He would do better, no matter what. Thankfully, the tiny orbaru were pretty chill in the containers at the moment, all things considered.

Rafet had done this before, and was a really good orbaru mother. Much better than Liliana anyway, who smothered he sons often and even fought her grandaughter's mother over her sometimes. It was a really mess, but at the very least Rafet was a caring mother until the offspring were grown, and then she let them do as they were supposed to without her hanging over them all the time. Renathan was glad about that, since he planned on breeding Rafet a ton more if he could in the future. As much as he could without her getting hurt, of course. He'd retire her whenever it felt like she would need to be. However, she was certainly his favorite female at the moment, and he had lots in plan for her! She looked so much like her father Howie, and it really showed. She was just adorable. Twix on the other hand was chosen more for colors than markings, save for those little spots on his ears. Just adorable, for sure! Renathan couldn't help but smile about it, he had his fingers crossed about those pretty ear markings, as he had been thinking earlier. He had lots of plans, and tried not to worry too much about that, though.

Renathan tried really hard not to care very much about the looks of the offspring he produces, but he had already failed at that a long while back. He decided to be much more careful about the pairs he selected, watching them for long periods of time to make sure that they would look great together. Some of his past breeding choices hadn't been a very good idea, so he was being much more careful, now. He was still wanting to work on a project that was probably not a good idea though; the one with Lazare. He was a bit aggressive, but Renathan really, really wanted to have that perfect offspring that looked just like him. Maybe even a red panda Everything in the long run. That sounded like a great idea, but he just hoped that he could find a way to not double up on the aggression genes that seemed to be going on. With Rafet, Renathan didn't have to worry about that. She wasn't aggressive at all; just very confident. It didn't seem to be the same kind of issue at all. Twix, at the very least, might give the offspring a bit more energy, maybe? He liked sloths, though...

Thus far, Renathan was able to note through his breeding attempts that it would seem that Sloths tended to produce sloths, or at least so far. Renathan had gifted Jack with Rafet's daughter and Rarebit's sister. Renathan hadn't really asked Jack what she was going to name it, but he wished that he had now. He was curious about how she was doing too, to see if that same laser-focused attitude had passed down to her as well. However, Renathan didn't want to have too many orbaru from the same litters in the orbaru houses, since they tended to pair up like this, and that didn't seem like a good idea to have too many banded-together siblings taking over the orbaru society, so to speak. So far, it was causing family banding to occur, and that didn't seem like it was going to be a good occurrence over all. Renathan was probably going to have to break them up and all. He doubted that Rafet's offspring would do that, but he didn't want to test it out really either. That could cause issues in the long run, he reminded himself. Thankfully he probably didn't have to deal with multiple offspring being garnered from this breeding.

Multiple births were pretty rare with orbaru, though that wasn't always the case. In the far past, he remembered a single orbaru breeding producing five offspring! He hadn't seen that in several years, though. Most of his pairs made one offspring unless a berry was used, one of the baby berries that was, not the other ones. Today he wasn't going to use a baby berry; he was going to use a male berry to make sure that he got a male from this. Males were much more rare than females and always had been, though from what he understood lots of folks had gotten lucky in the past. He wasn't about to leave this one to chance, though. Depending on how Twix took this breeding today, this might be the first and last time he had the chance to do this pairing! Yes, he needed to have a male from them no matter what it took. Renathan was willing to miss out on the extra baby to do so. He'd have to give away the second offspring anyway, most likely. He doubted that it would happen, but he didn't know much about what sort of orbaru breeding hormones would do this month... Huh.

That was what made breeding orbaru and speculating as to what was going to come out of the pairing FAR more complicated. Each month a different effect was produced in orbaru due to... From what Renathan had been told, hormonal differences since the creatures are very breedable. Naturally breeding creatures was much more complicated than labs produced ones, from what Renathan knew. Orbaru were a mysterious species, and he didn't really know if the information he was given was true or not, or right for other reasons or not. That was just the best that he could get with the information sources that he had. He hadn't been able to guess what the effect was the last month, but he knew that there would be a different one this month, as there supposedly always was. He wondered what it could be as he made his way to the breeding center. So far, Rafet was as calm in the orbaru carrier as always, seeming fine with what they were about to go do. She had been bred last month anyway, so it wasn't a big surprise for her at all. However, Renathan was surprised that Twix wasn't freaking out yet and trying to get out of the carrier.

Almost as if speaking about some sort of evil; immediately Twix just started to freak out. Renathan had to stop and put Rafet's container down so that he would have the balance to hold Twix's container in both arms. "Now what do you think you are doing?" Renathan said, accusatory, looking into the crate through the grate door that was locked to keep Twix in. Twix looked quite scared, he wasn't really used to Renathan yet. He looked at him like he might be a predator or something, which was not something that Renathan's Orbaru tended to do. Orbaru were usually too 'stupid' (or rather, they didn't have the natural instincts) to get away from a predator, but it was obvious that the feral orbaru were a lot different. They had to subsist some way, being feral and all, hanging around the quest board or whatever they did. They had to be able to survive and breed long enough to have the huge amount of orbaru that plagued the area down that way. Twix was no different; absolutely trying to get away now that he was awake or something. Renathan had no idea what really caused this sudden outburst, but he understood the gist.

The issue was that Renathan had no idea what to do to help with the situation of Twix doing this. Holding him would probably just get Renathan kicked in the chest horrifically painfully, and at best, the creature would probably run away. He was going to have to get him to calm down in the carrier some how, without taking him out. Renathan would normally have just opened the thing and pulled out the creature to hold it, but with a stray, they were a lot different than the other orbaru that Renathan had taken care of for sure. Was his pretty coat really worth breeding him when it was possible that the offspring would also be more restless? Renathan really had to ask himself in this moment about how okay it was that he was really doing this. After a moment, in which Twix was hopping up and down in the crate and might even be accidentally bumping his head around, Renathan finally decided to just pick up Rafet and get a move on. Talking to him probably wouldn't work. Strays weren't used to that sort of calming voice, after all. It was a real trouble. Maybe he would calm down when he noticed the female?

Even though Renathan was already pretty tired, he was trying to be very patient with the male on the way to the breeding center. Why was everything like this all the time with orbaru? It seemed like working with orbaru was getting to be more and more difficult over time, instead of easier. This time it wasn't anything caused by the stock itself, though; he didn't breed strays for a living, for example. However, the energy would be useful in this lineage, if he could manage this. He was sure that once they got to the breeding center, the male would see the female and calm down quite a bit. Already Rafet knew that Twix was there, she was calmed down and lazy of course, and was watching him from the small holes in her carrier. Well, hopefully the poor creature wasn't going to be stressing out too long. Poor Rafet didn't seem to be impressed with the panicky little male, all scrawny despite Renathan feeding him a ton. "Goodness, Twix." Renathan finally said, his voice dripping with annoyance. He was certainly disliking this situation entirely. "You need to calm the heck down, boyo." Renathan practically groaned.

Some day, he hoped to get back to simple, fun orbaru breeding. The kind that made for much calmer, enjoyable times. The past few times had been big nightmares, and it would seem that this was at least shaping up to be an annoyance. Renathan made his way toward the breeding center much faster now, going down the penultimate street with quickness, since the male was STILL freaking out like some kind of a hoppy toad. "Twix, boyo, you are not a frog. Calm down!" Renathan frowned. This was going to suck, but at least all he had to do was round the corner just up ahead and then walk down the last street. And at least it wasn't hot at all! That would suck for sure, and make the situation much worse. The idea of Twix freaking himself out and leaping around while overheating... Yeah, Renathan was glad that he tried this now when it was cooler as opposed to a few weeks ago when it was super hot. It was amazing how quickly the seasons changed, just super quick. Renathan rushed to the corner, and then turned it. Rafet was starting to try to get ahold of Twix's attention, now.

Rafet was sticking her paw through one of the holes in the side of her carrier, and when she wasn't able to get his attention by waving her paw around, Rafet started slapping it up against the side of the carrier, making a loud noise. GREAT Now Renathan had one bouncing freaking out jumping orbaru, and then also one that was hammering the side of the carrier with her foot. "Goodness gracious will you two just be quiet!?" Renathan called out, pretty close to the breeding center now. He was glad, but he had to get them acting right before he got there, or he'd probably be turned out and not allowed to breed them. Renathan stopped and looked down at Rafet with his eyes angry. "You, you stop with the thumping! And YOU-" Renathan called, turning towards Twix instead. "STOP FREAKING OUT AND CALM DOWN!" He screamed, about ready to pull out his mane. This was a dang mess, an absolute mess, and he was about ready to go home instead of breeding the pair because he was embarrassed about Twix being ridiculous. Perhaps this hadn't been the best idea after all... He was almost feral.
