Another day, another trek to the breeding center. It was a lot easier now for Fiera. The newbie jitters from her first couple of times at the breeding center had died down. She couldn't exactly call herself an old pro (though she would to any strangers that asked- she had a reputation to maintain after all.), but she knew, roughly, what to do, and that made things go a lot easier. She also knew to book an appointment in advance by this point- which had cut down on her wait times for a breeding room. By now, she knew what the place looked like, how to get there, and what to expect when she went in. Thankfully, nothing had gone horribly wrong... yet. She supposed there was a first time for everything, but hoped that that wouldn't be the case today. The more disasters she could cut down on, the better it would be for her orbaru... and the more likely she would be to be invited back to the breeding center. She chuckled. Didn't need a lifetime ban from ANOTHER shop. The idea brought back hazy memories from her old life, bubbling to the surface like a boiling pot.

The weather was another aspect of the day that was making this trip a lot more pleasant for Fiera. The overwhelming, choking heat of summer had finally started to die off a bit, leaving a breeze in its wake. The last time she did this, carrying two pet carriers while walking around in ninety degree heat, with heatwaves radiating off the sidewalk, made the process nearly unbearable. The wiggling of the pets in the carriers didn't help either. Nowadays the sky was still clear and sunny, with a couple of clouds rapidly scooting around the sky, but the humidity made it pleasantly warm instead of soaking her with sweat. The gentle breeze brought with it hints of autumn, and all the good things that would bring. Pumpkins, orange leaves, spicy drinks, and not to mention all of the neat holidays that came around that time of year. Her home town wasn't one for fall celebrations, but The Labs seemed to adore them. She had already seen supplies for something called 'Vai Min Mur' in the shops, even though it was supposedly a month away still. She wasn't entirely sure what the holiday was all about, but what she had seen so far seemed plenty enticing.

The breezes and promises of an exciting season was invigorating to Fiera. She had lazed around for the tail end of the previous month, unable to get much done with the relentless weather. Now however, she was excited and ready to face the world, so to speak. Maybe it was her, maybe it was the fact that she was no longer sweating her fur off every time she left the house. Regardless, it had spurred a new flurry of activity from her. As a result, she decided to start up another orbaru breeding. While pachee were her favorite, with their cute little faces, pleasant smell, and sturdy body, orbaru still held a special place in her heart. Still, she noticed when looking over her collection that a lot of hers were rather... dull. She needed more bright colors and interesting patterns, she had decided. And to that goal, she had contacted that mammalian again, Renathan. Once again, she had rented an orbaru from him, and was eager to come up with some pretty babies. Renathan always seemed to have a huge variety of orbaru, and she was more than happy to take one off of his hands for a while.

The orbaru she had picked out from Renathan's menagerie was a real looker. He had a dark chocolate body with a brown belly, which on its own was pretty, of course, but nothing to write home about. The real show on his pelt came in the form of dozens, if not hundreds, of dazzling rosettes flecked across his pelt. They were consistent in concentration, stretching over his belly, tail, and even his legs. Fiera could only imagine how they'd look in blue. His eyes and tail orb on the other hand were a comforting olive green, meshing well with the rest of his body colors. Overall, he was a very attractive version two, and she was excited to see how this breeding would turn out. His personality, on the other hand... left a bit to be desired, so far. He had seemed perfectly friendly at Renathan's place, allowing himself to be put into a carrier with no fuss or struggle. The moment she left the mammalian's house however, he started whining up a storm, making petulant little noises the whole time. Even now, he hadn't ceased or slowed, whinging on about nothing in particular. Fiera simply could not place why.

As a result, Fiera was turning a lot of heads with the pathetic noises emanating from one of her carriers, but she tried her best to ignore them. She strut firmly forward, back straight and eyes ahead. She'd never deflate under judgement. Her other orbaru however, might. Bluebell was a classic version three orbaru. Her plain, undecorated blue fur was pretty, but a common sight, indicative that she was one of the default types of orbaru you could get. It was also indicative of her being one of the very first orbaru Fiera had picked up upon coming to the labs, though not THE first. That honor went to Hilar. As a result, Bluebell was quite comfortable around Fiera and was very friendly overall, but was a tad shy around everyone else. And everything else. Needless to say, Leo's cries of horror had reduced her to a quivering puddle in her carrier, pressed firmly to the back of the cage. It would likely take some coaxing to get her to come out once they arrived, but at least she wasn't causing Fiera more trouble. She wasn't sure if she could handle two wailing orbaru. One was enough, thank you very much.

Strange looks aside, the trip was going rather well. The weather was holding up, and she had had no stumbling blocks on the way there. In fact, Fiera wouldn't be surprised if her face was a welcome one in the breeding center. Last month, there had been... a mishap there. They had captured a stray orbaru female with a broken leg, and attempted to treat her. Unfortunately, the critter somehow managed to escape (though she wasn't sure how. How does a small, fluffy animal with a snapped leg manage to outrun a full sized human? Ridiculous.), running out into the city beyond. Thankfully, she and her fel rakai sarane, Fern, happened to be walking by to check out the quest board. She had meant to take on a quest selected off the board, but instead the quest was selected for her. The breeding center employee and... some rude woman flagged her down and explained the situation. Despite the woman's nasty countenance, Fiera couldn't help but feel bad about the situation, and magnanimously decided to help out, with Fern's assistance. They seemed a little anxious to have a venomous wolf sized creature 'helping', but she assured them of how gentle she was.

After that, they were off, wandering down the various alleyways of The Labs. The humanish knew that the little creature couldn't have gone far, but her biggest problem turned out not to be catching it, but figuring out which one it WAS. She soon found an absolute swarm of stray orbaru, all of which looked the exact same. She knew that the one she was looking for had an usual eye color, but that was impossible to tell in such a swarm of rapidly moving orbaru. Fern couldn't help herself at the sight of so many morsels however, and began barking. Thankfully, that was exactly what Fiera needed- the stray orbaru all fled, which left her able to see if the stragglers were the ones she was looking for. An orbaru with a broken leg wouldn't be able to run quickly, after all. While none from the crowd were the one she was looking for, a quick search of the area revealed it. Instead of hanging around the swarm, the injured female had decided to hide in a dumpster. Not the most sanitary of hiding spots, but it was one that Fiera was able to retrieve it from with little struggle.

The breeding center worker was overwhelmed with joy to see the creature returned (albeit a little distressed at Fern's slobbery, venomous mouth), and Fiera was more than happy to turn the wiggly thing over. Even the rude woman (...what was her name again? She struggled to recall.) was at least a little bit distressed. Apparently the two of them were expecting the search to take a lot longer, if it even came to fruition at all. Fiera simply replied that it was because she was just that skilled. Regardless of her actual skill level, they were happy (or at least begrudging) to give Fiera a reward- an extra visit to the breeding center in a month! Normally she'd only get three room rentals a month, to help with overpopulation issues, but she had been given a special certificate to give her a fourth. Well, she knew she just HAD to use that. And now was as good a time as any to get started. So here she was, showing up bright and early on the first of the month, prepared to get her... well, not money's worth, but ready to claim her reward. And what a fine breeding to start with!

Her orbaru populations had been growing slowly, as had her pachee, but she had more than few ideas in mind already. A lot of other breeders seemed to prefer earthy, natural tones and unique patterns, but that wasn't in Fiera's tastes. Instead, she preferred her breedable pets as bright and flashy as possible, in the most eye catching colors that genetics could make. To put it simply, Fiera's tastes in pets matched her tastes in fashion. Bright, colorful, and beautiful, with functionality as a tasteful afterthought. That was the reason for the pairing she had cooked up today- Bluebell had a gorgeous coat color, but dull and common patterns. Leo had natural coat colors, but fantastic markings. Together, they would produce wonderful offspring for Fiera to play around with. Still, Fiera wasn't about to count her orbaru before they... hatched. She had to get them to the breeding center first, (which she still had a fair distance to walk before she arrived there) and then go through the whole dog and pony show of actually checking the pair of them in and getting them into a breeding room. It wouldn't do her any good to get ahead of herself now.

The sidewalk could practically fall away behind her for all the looking back Fiera was doing. It was a gorgeous day, and she was going to enjoy it. The breeding center should be coming up soon, and that was a good thing, as Fiera's arms were starting to get tired. Bluebell was a sweetheart, but Fiera really needed to cut down on the amount of treats she was giving her. Otherwise, she'd start resembling a blue berry soon enough. The wind ruffled through the trees and her hair, sending leaves scuttling up the sidewalk on either side of her. Leo paused in his wailing for a moment, his ears perked to watch them go, before starting up anew once they had left his field of vision. Fiera thought he was cute, but couldn't help but roll her eyes with frustration as his crying started again. She'd be glad to give him back after this was all over. She also hoped that his mopey behavior wouldn't get passed down to his future offspring, and she DEFINITELY hoped this behavior wouldn't affect the breeding today. What female wanted to mate with a male that had such horrible separation anxiety?

The humanish let him cry as she kept walking, hoping that he'd wear himself out by the time she got to the breeding center. Like it or not, he wasn't going to get away from this stranger today. Fiera eyed the quest board as she passed by it. There was a new entry in there this month, she noted. She'd have to go check that out once she was done with her breeding today. The more quests she did, the more prizes she'd be able to rack up, and the more favors people would owe her. For now though, she had to focus on one thing at a time. Quests could come later- though she DID wish she could do them while waiting for her orbaru to get on with it. It would make the waiting process a whole lot more tolerable. Go out, do some grocery shopping or monster slaying or what have you, and come back to some sweet, blobby babies. The ideal system. Now if only she could get the people at the breeding center to agree with her. She chuckled to herself. That would be a tough sell. Speaking of the breeding center however, she had to be coming up on it soon...

Speak of the devil, and he will appear. The breeding center came into view just as Fiera thought that, its curved roof easily visible past the trees. She was pretty sure the copses of trees around here were part of the public park- that place was huge and sprawling, and had little outgrowths like this everywhere. The breeding center was one of many buildings happily nestled up against its boundaries. And 'happily nestled' was definitely an accurate word to describe this building. It looked the same as the last time Fiera was here. Round, colorful but muted, bright and cheery with plenty of windows, many of which were plastered with PSAs and advertisements for the services provided within. The building just radiated happy, enthusiastic energy. Fiera wondered internally how much of the popularity of this place was because of appearances alone. She certainly enjoyed spending time in there- though perhaps it was just due to the bright colors she enjoyed so much. She glanced at the posters put up in the windows as she approached, looking for anything new. Alas, there wasn't- though she did wonder why they hadn't taken down the sarane breeding poster yet. It was quite out of date.

She wasn’t sure why sarane breeding had shut down, to be honest. She had heard rumors here and there, however. Something about public safety? Or was it fertility issues with the hens? There were a million excuses, but Fiera couldn’t be sure which ones were the truth and which were lies. Regardless of their veracity, there hadn’t been a sarane breeding in a good, long while. She hadn’t seen the breeding rooms for them in the breeding center, but there was a wing of the facility that was always pointedly empty, even when it had massive amounts of space in it. Presumably it was the sarane wing, with massive rooms for their breedings. She wondered if it would ever be repurposed for the more popular breedable species, or if the workers were holding out the hope that sarane breedings would start up again, even now. Fiera’s mouth quirked down a bit- she knew quite well that that sort of hope was never fruitful. It didn’t benefit her anyway- she only owned one sarane, so breedings didn’t really interest her or her hatchling. He had never even been in a fight before! Though, she supposed that was a good thing with how small he was.

The humanish shook her head, clearing away those feelings. It was an irrelevant train of thought, and she had been standing awkwardly outside the facility for way too long anyway. Not wanting to look weirder than she already was, Fiera pushed open the doors of the facility. The breeding center was as bright and friendly as it always was, of course. The lights overhead were just warm enough and not too harsh, giving the room an open, welcoming feel. Even then, there was plenty of natural light pouring in through the windows. The floor was tile, but with plenty of soft, pleasantly patterned carpet on it to be nice on the feet. There were little play pens around for pets that needed to get some energy out before their appointments, and comfy chairs for the owners. For those who were interested, there were magazines to read and pamphlets to lead through. Fiera usually brought her own reading material, however. She claimed it was because she had no need for shallow celebrity gossip, but in actuality it was because she was already subscribed to all of these magazines and had already read them before she came here. Not that she’d tell anyone that.
