The least pleasant part of the reception area however, had to be the massive line that had collected in front of the front desk. Fiera sighed- it always seemed that no matter how early she showed up, there was always a queue waiting for her. It seemed to be particularly long today, however, and a glance up at the front desk showed irritated faces on the ones who had been here the longest. She sighed- looked like she was going to be here for a while. She set the carriers down once she got settled in line. If the line wasn’t moving, there wouldn’t be any point in holding them. The movement unfortunately set Leo off again, and soon she was greeted by the sound of newly renewed whining. She groaned loudly in chorus and looked around for anything to shut him up. Up by the front desk, she spotted a dish of colorful treats. She pointed at Bluebell. “Save my spot.” She ordered, letting her carrier mark Fiera’s spot in line. She wasted no time marching up to the desk, swiping a fistful of treats despite the receptionist’s meek protests, before walking right back to her carriers.

Few people noticed her, as they were too busy at the front, so Fiera was able to get back in place before anyone noticed. The person behind her tried to give her a dirty look, but one trademark glare back and they were suitably silenced. Then, she turned her attention to Leo, crouching next to his carrier. “Hey, buddy.” She said, her voice sugar sweet. “You want to give that crying a rest? I have a treat for you...” She said, wiggling it through the bars of the carrier. Leo didn’t like that however, and only pressed himself to the back of the cage, his voice changing to a thin, consistent whine. Fiera sighed and stood back up, casting her gaze around for another option. She was so sure that the treat would work! Then, she noticed the play pens, scattered with toys. Maybe...? Before she could set upon that potential solution however, a familiar face crossed by her field of vision. The employee from the quest board! “Hey, HEY! You!” She whispered harshly, waving an arm at him to get his attention. He turned around, bewildered, and she pointed at her face. “Remember me?” She said with a grin.

Judging from his face he did indeed remember her, though the pleasantness of the encounter was up for debate. He did his best to pin on a nervous smile that he hoped more resembled “welcoming”, and greeted her back. “Ah, hello...you. It’s SO good to see you again.” He said. Fiera puffed herself up, her ears pricked tall. “Of course it is! This is me we’re talking about, after all. The hero of the breeding center!” She placed a perfectly manicured hand on her chest for emphasis. The employee tried to look impressed. “...Anyway,” Fiera moved on. “What’s up with... all this, do you know?” She said, gesturing at the trailing line, growing longer by the minute. “Oh...” He said, a little sheepish. “We had... a bit of an incident with a custom pachee earlier. His owner failed to register that it was capable of breathing fire, and so... we’re cleaning up the mess now, but for the time being, we’re a little low on useable breeding rooms.” He sighed. Fiera cringed. “Oh. That makes... sense? Wait, don’t pachee not have mouths? How did it breathe fire?” The breeding center employee paused for a moment, thinking.

“Uhhh...” The employee tried to explain, lamely. “Oh!” He said, “My pager’s going off. Good to see you, gotta go!” He chirped, hurrying away. “Wait!” Fiera called after him. “I don’t hear anything... oh, whatever.” She huffed, crossing her arms. Guess he was just THAT busy, then. No time for a pretty lady and her important problems. That was fine, she just had to wait. And figure out how to get Leo to stop crying, that was still a thing. She looked back at the playpen. Maybe that held a solution, letting him and Bluebell get to know each other a bit before their appointment. “Hold my spot.” She said to the person behind her, before lifting the carriers back up again. She set them down next to the playpen and went to open them. Bluebell was first, wrapping her tail around Fiera’s arm nervously as the humanish lifted her up. It took a little effort to pry the blue orbaru off of her, actually. Still, she soon managed to dump her onto the floor of the play pen, leaving her a treat for her troubles. Bluebell nibbles on it nervously, eyeing Fiera as she turned to the next crate.

Despite his distress, Leo wasn’t nearly as difficult to extract from the crate as she thought, and he flopped around uselessly in her arms. She turned him over a couple times, making sure he wasn’t actually injured or something. When she was sure the coast was clear, she set him down in the play pen next to Bluebell, providing him with a couple of treats too- most of which Bluebell immediately stole. His sniffles calmed considerably at the sight of another orbaru, and she sighed with relief. She glanced back at the line, and saw that it was her turn! She hurried back over, cutting in front of the person behind her, who sighed rudely. “Hello!” Fiera chirped. “I’m Fiera, here for my appointment? Orbaru breeding, Leo and Bluebell?” She smiled widely, showing off all of her teeth. The receptionist hummed and hawed for a bit, going through her list. “Uhhh, oh! Here you are.” She said with a chuckle. “You’ll be in room eight... whenever it’s ready.” She trailed off, but Fiera picked up on it. “Yeah, I heard you had an incident.” “You could say that. You can take a seat- we’ll call you up when the room is ready!”

After that, Fiera was shipped away to make room for the next person, who gave her a dirty look as she walked away. Fiera flopped down in the chair closest to the play pen, twiddling her fingers. She hoped it wouldn’t take too long- they had a tendency to shorten appointment times if they were behind, and she wanted her pair in there for as long as possible. Not to mention she had other things she wanted to do today. She couldn’t spend ALL day at the breeding center. She looked back over at the playpen. At least she was getting this initial socializing out of the way early. Leo had stopped making noises entirely now, and was happily sharing the treats with Bluebell. Fiera noticed the “please, no food or water in the playpen at any time” sign. Oops. Oh well, too late now. They were having fun anyway, and she was sure someone would clean it up. If they left any crumbs to be cleaned, that is- they were really going to town on those treats. Bluebell stopped after they finished, licking the crumbs off her face messily, and then turning to groom Leo as well.

Fiera couldn’t help but smile at that. How cute. It seemed like they were getting along well enough, Leo’s initial distress notwithstanding. Fiera realized she probably shouldn’t leave them in there together for TOO long though. She didn’t think the breeding center would approve of orbaru breeding outside of the earmarked rooms, and she doubted the other people in the waiting room would either. So, Fiera stood back up and lifted Bluebell out of the pen. She wiggled a bit at getting put back in her crate, but she’d just have to deal with it. Fiera wasn’t allowing a premature breeding today- especially not without having taken a bite of the baby berry first! Like last time, she had been given one to provide to the pair. Supposedly, it had some mystical effect on breedings, though whether or not it was making the offspring come out better, producing more babies, or just making the parents like each other more, Fiera couldn’t say. All she knew was that it worked well for her so far. Her last breeding had turned out wonderfully, with brightly colored babies that even had patches of faintly glowing fur!

This breeding wasn’t quite as “out there” as her last one, but she still thought it was a good idea, with a lot of potential. Eventually, she was able to stuff Bluebell back in her carrier, dropping her a couple more treats for her trouble. Hopefully she’d still have room in her stomach for the baby berry afterward! After Bluebell was situated, she turned back to Leo, determined to keep him comfortable if just to avoid those awful noises. She picked up a little rubber ball, and he perked up at the sight of it. She carefully tossed it across the pen, and he took off after it, jumping over and around it before kicking it around the pen. It was an adorable sight, to be honest- Fiera could see why people loved orbaru so much. There were even a couple of people across the waiting room that she could tell were trying not to stare at the adorable sight. Fiera puffed up with pride before remembering that oh right- he didn’t actually belong to her. Well, hopefully his babies would come out just as appealing, so she wouldn’t have to feel TOO bad about giving him back.

Speaking of the others waiting in the reception area, she scanned the room again. The crowd in the reception area seemed to be dying down a bit- it looked like they were finally getting people into breeding rooms. That was good- hopefully she wouldn’t have too much longer to wait here. She smiled as someone came back out of the double doors leading to the waiting rooms. No, she didn’t think she had too much longer to wait at all. Her orbaru were thankfully being very patient as well. Bluebell had settled down in her carrier, crunching loudly on her treats. Leo was entertaining himself well enough with the toys in the playpen, his worries abandoned for the time being. Fiera herself was getting kind of sleepy, to be honest, with how nice and comfy this chair was. She knew she couldnt do that though- with how hungry people were for the rooms here, she knew that unless she was perfectly alert, someone else would happily steal her reservation. If that happened, she’d be up a creek without a paddle. No, instead she just had to sit here and wait for her name, boring as that was for her.

She sat there for what felt like hours, waiting for her name to be called. To entertain herself, she watched her fellow waitees scattered around the waiting room. There were some beautiful pets here. A pair of brilliantly colored pachee with shiny leaves played around their owner’s legs in the corner, up near the desk. Closer to Fiera, a teenager put another male orbaru into the playpen Leo was in, smiling shyly before sitting back down. There were plenty of other orbaru here too of course, but the majority were either sectioned off or in crates. She supposed it was because of all the energy they had- the breeding center couldn’t afford another escape. Being calm plant creatures on the other hand, pachee got a lot more wiggle room. There was even a Lotine in the room, waiting for its turn. She knew precious little about those strange creatures- only that they were another type of breedable, even though she had never seen more than one at a time in the breeding center. She always thought it took two to tango, but when it came to plant creatures, it would appear that her knowledge was out of date.

The minutes dripped by, people came and went, and Fiera was still horribly bored. Finally, after what seemed like a thousand years, she heard it. “Fiera Ferella, number twenty five? Orbaru breeding, Bluebell and Leo?” She spring up, happy to stretch her legs. “Yes, that’s me! Right over here!” She said, waving gently. The receptionist pointed at the door to her right with a ballpoint pen. “Room number eight love, on your left.” Fiera practically jumped to attention, moving to snatch Leo from the playpen. He was currently engaged with the teen’s orbaru, wrestling playfully. Fiera wasn’t about to waste any more time however, and snatched him up, gripping him just behind the arms. He whined petulantly, but thankfully didn’t continue the noise as Fiera put him away. Thank god, that had been infuriated. She gave the carriers one more once over to make sure they were properly closed, and then hefted them up and toward the door. The hallway beyond was so much more quiet and peaceful, and the humanish decided to take the time and privacy to check her phone. How long had she been waiting? According to the time... half an hour. Yikes.

Had it really only been that much? It felt like she had been waiting for years before! She shoved her phone back in her pocket, miffed. Guess she wasn’t nearly as patient as she thought. She lifted the carriers up again and marched down the hall, looking for the right number. Finally she found it- a bright red number eight, printed on in a cutesy bubble font. That would be the one! She pushed open the door, and carefully locked it behind her. Didn’t need anyone escaping today, no sir. The room was about how she remembered it. It resembled a playground for young children, with soft foam floors, a variety of toys, and the centerpiece. It was a large, chunky plastic castle, dyed in a variety of bright colors. It had at least ten chambers in it, for orbaru to both play in and complete their business. Perfect. She opened her purse, fishing the baby berry out of it. She poked a hole in the shiny skin with one nail, letting the scent of its juices fill the room. She heard the orbaru shift in their cages, interested, before she set the fruit in front of the castle.

Finally, it was time for the stars of the show to make their appearance. “Ready to stretch your legs, guys?” She asked rhetorically. “There’s plenty of room in here, that’s for sure.” She clicked open Bluebell’s cage first, letting her get used to the new area before coming out in her own time. She sniffed the air gently, hopping forward as Fiera fiddled with the clasp on Leo’s carrier. Soon enough, he was free too, and hopped toward Bluebell. They sniffed at each other with interest for a moment before making their way to the baby berry. Fiera flopped herself into a chair near the door, happy to see things moving along so quickly. With any luck, she’d be out of here before she knew it. She debated whether or not she should even get her book out- she had been informed that Leo was quite the skilled stud. This was probably quick and commonplace for him. Get in, do your business with the female, go home again. Sure enough, he seemed to be taking the lead, going ahead of Bluebell, who was very inexperienced in comparison. Fiera hadnt bred her even once before this.

As expected, Leo was the first to investigate the baby berry. He sniffed at it experimentally, before taking a tiny lick. Before he could decide if he wanted more however, Bluebell dove in front of him, taking a huge bite of it. He flicked his ears with interest and surprise, before joining her in feasting upon the berry. Soon, there was nothing left of it, not even seeds or juice. They were like cute, booping piranhas. After that, they took the time to sniff at each other before cleaning the juices off of each other’s faces, gently combing the fur with their teeth and front paws, a saccharine sight. They didn’t seem as energetic as the last orbaru breeding Fiera did, which had the female literally bouncing off the walls. Instead they seemed perfectly happy to just sit there calmly with each other, making soft booping noises. She wasn’t expecting that level of intimacy, but she couldn’t complain- it was a lot quieter than usual, which she appreciated. She did hope they got down to business soon though. Lunch time was drawing near, and Fiera was one grumpy cat lady when her stomach was a rumbling.

Fiera fiddled with her phone, checking her messages- none, of course. She had lived here for several months by now, but didn't really... have much in the way of friends yet. There was that one snow leopard lady who bowled her over in that fancy part of town, but that was more of a clumsy one off than a blossoming friendship. The breeding center employee then, maybe? No... that was. Fiera didn't really know what that was. Definitely not friendship. She loved her pets but... they didn't really count as friends, did they. Unless she wanted to become a crazy cat lady, that is. She cringed- she wasn't THAT old yet. She then decided, despite her earlier assertion, that watching her orbaru sit there and cuddle wasn't boring at all, and was in fact so enrapturing that she could think about little else. Yep. She leaned forward in her chair, watching as they curled up with each other. They looked awfully comfy- Fiera wished she had a coat of fur like that. Well, she did, sort of. But only on her tail and ears. Those lucky orbaru got to have it all over their bodies. Just then however, Leo got up and stretched.
