Ranger Level: 5 Loyalty: 15 Stamina: 1 Strength: 0 Resistance: 0 Dexterity: 1 Mentality: 0 Special Abilities: Illness Moves: Squirm Taking a hatchling Izer into untamed wilderness might have seemed like a bad idea to most people, but Leafy certainly liked to do strange things. Ranger needed to have lots of experience exploring if he was going to grow up to be an effective messenger. She knew from the books she had read that babies needed to build up their immune systems. The hatchling Pestilence Izer was so sickly, it was up to her to make sure that he grew up strong and healthy. She felt a tad bit irresponsible taking a weak hatchling into the dangerous parts of the gardens, but her gut told her that it would all work out in the end. “I’ll keep you safe,” she promised the little hatchling as she cradled him in her hands. This quest wasn’t meant to be particularly dangerous. At least if she kept her wits about her, it really shouldn’t be. (Ranger 3 1/5, 13 1/5)

Her task for the day was to find an old lady’s crystals that had been stolen away by a Nyssa. Nyssa weren’t exactly known for being threatening, even if they were rather monstrous in size. Leafy placed Ranger carefully into the front pocket of her shirt. She had gotten this shirt specifically to accommodate him. It was a lot easier to care for him when she could keep him in a secure location.
“Be careful not to fall,” she warned him.
Ranger was too little to fly since his wings weren’t fully developed. That ensured he would stay close to her, however.
“We’re looking for some crystals. They’ll be shiny, so you should like them!” she exclaimed.
She’d only been given a general area for where the crystals might be located. If she wanted to find them, she was going to have to search around on her own. A giant Nyssa shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Having Ranger along with her was always slightly nerve-wracking. The Izer was fragile and Leafy was admittedly, not the most careful person in the world. However, she tried to keep Ranger as protected as she could. It might be safer to keep him inside her kennel while he was still a hatchling, but Leafy wanted to build his immune system and ensure that he had plenty of exploring experience before he was all grown up.
“Besides, if you get any sicker, I can always take you to the Healer’s Temple,” she remarked to him.
Ranger squawked in response. Leafy was impressed. The harsh noise was indication that his lungs were getting stronger. She patted the top of his head lightly with her pointer finger before turning back to the task at hand. She would need a plant to track the Nyssa. Their giant size suggested this would be easy enough to do, but that wouldn’t necessarily be the case.

Ranger watched Leafy curiously as she crouched down to examine the ground. The easiest way to track a creature in this scenario would be to find some tracks. If she had a better nose, she might have been able to track through scent, but that wasn’t an option for her.
“I’m looking for flattened plants, or imprints in the soil,” she commented.
It was a common misperception to think that tracking creatures was simply looking for footprints. Seldom would there be perfectly preserved footprints in the dirt. Sometimes one might get lucky and find tracks like that, but it was more likely to stumble across partial prints or simply signs such as broken branches. This area had signs of creature activity, but there was nothing large enough to indicate the presence of a regular Nyssa, which ensured that a giant one was definitely nowhere near here. She would need to move on to the next area.

Leafy carefully held one hand against her shirt pocket to keep Ranger secure as she started walking forward. He was so little and easy to lose, it reassured her if she kept a light hold on him at all times. The trees surrounding them were thick. If a Nyssa was to be found nearby, there would certainly be some sign of destruction. She headed deeper into the thicket of trees, keeping her eyes fixed on the foliage around her. She stroked the top of Ranger’s head, trying to keep him feeling safe as they walked.
“Wait I think those branches up ahead are broken,” she murmured aloud.
She felt nervousness thrum through her chest. Nyssa weren’t particularly dangerous. They were slow moving and typically quite benevolent, but there was always a chance that a dangerous creature had broken the branches. She would still need to be careful, even if she wasn’t searching for a monster.

The branches were indeed broken, creating a slight whistle from some sort of wind coming from beyond... The question; is the rhythmic wind natural, or the breath of something quite large?

As she drew closer, it became more evident that massive tree branches had been broken off as a large creature lumbered through. The breaks were not malicious in nature, simply the result of carelessness. Ranger leaned forward, blinking as a warm breeze blew in their direction. The wind was warm, almost unnaturally so. It didn’t quite fit with the rest of the weather which had been steadily growing colder as fall approached. She felt unease fill her body. There was nothing to be afraid of just yet, but the creature that had broken these branches was still close by. She stood still and listened for the location of the creature. It took a few minutes before she heard the loud snap of another branch breaking off. It was a little way away, but she would be able to reach the area quickly. Nyssa were slow moving, there was no rush to catch up with it.

She needed to be smart about this. If she rushed in without a plan, she might find herself injured. She was especially vulnerable with Ranger with her. The little Izer could be squished so easily by a lumbering Nyssa. The Nyssa likely wouldn’t attack if provoked, but trying to steal the crystals it had stolen might cause some tension. She could try sneaking in and grabbing the crystals before the Nyssa could react. She would need an escape route planned out ahead of time if she wanted to outright steal the crystals. It seemed like her best option if she wanted to get the job done quickly.
“I’ll need you to keep yourself safe by hiding away,” she told Ranger.
The little Izer didn’t understand her words, but she would zip up the pocket he was hiding in once she was ready to put her plan into action. For now, she would need to scout out the Nyssa’s exact location.

She made sure she was always aware of the light press of Ranger’s weight in her pocket. The little Izer squirmed every so often and she had to make sure that he didn’t accidentally squirm himself right out of the pocket. She moved stealthily through the undergrowth, taking care not to accidentally crunch on any dried leaves or snap any twigs. It took her a good ten minutes of careful sneaking before she caught sight of the Nyssa she was tracking. It was far larger than any she had seen before. That fact alone would have confirmed it as the correct one. However, she needed to check first that it still had the crystals with it.
“I need you to hide now. It’ll only be for a bit, but I need you to stay safe,” she informed Ranger.
She carefully zipped up the pocket. If she needed to run, he would be kept securely inside.

Ranger gave one loud squawk before settling down. Leafy froze at the noise, but the Nyssa took no notice of it. She scanned the entirety of the creature, trying to decide where it would have stashed the crystals. It was likely still holding onto them, but there was also the possibility that it had already stored them away. She needed to get closer still, but she would need a good hiding space first. She waited for the Nyssa to stop walking forward. It settled down right next to a large, dead birch tree. The leaves had long fallen off and the wood was rotting. The rot had provided the soil below with enough nutrients to grow a wide array of plants. Plants that the Nyssa was busy devouring. Eating would keep the Nyssa distracted for now, which meant that this was the perfect time to strike. She would first need to catch sight of the crystals though.

She continued watching, inching closer each time the Nyssa leaned down and grabbed a fistful of roots to munch on. She needed to find those crystals before it finished eating and moved on. Ranger shifted inside her pocket and Leafy pressed her hand against him to reassure him that she was still here.
“I just need to wait a little longer,” she muttered.
She continued watching the Nyssa, keeping her eyes peeled for any sign of the crystals. When the giant creature moved to gather more roots, she finally caught sight of the crystal cluster. They had been clutched tightly in the Nyssa’s grasp, but now that it needed both hands to feed, it had placed the crystals on the ground right in front of it. She might not get another opportunity like this one, she would need to be reckless if she wanted to succeed. Without a second though, she flung herself forward and tried to grab the crystals.
