Ashe got the line sorted out and cast out once again. Santiago stood nearby, watching with vague interest. He liked it much better when Ashe jumped in and tried to wrestle a fish, but for some reason he was playing it safe today. That was fine, he would wait. Be prepared to help if something came up. And as he watched and waited, the bobber bobbed once, twice, three times - dipping below the surface each time, giving the pair the idea that something was down there tugging on it. It went under one final time and stayed for a full second, maybe two- but as Ashe hurried to reel it in, it popped back up and reeled in light. When the man pulled the rod up, nothing was there. He sighed, checked his bait to make sure there was still something left on there, then he cast back out again.
"This is so booooring," Ashe grumbled to his bonded. Santiago grumbled low in his throat, a rumble of agreement. Inyala seemed to share the same sentiment, as she sat on the ground near his feet messing with some extra fishing line. She was tying knots and then undoing them, but what she saw as a playful pasttime, might actually come in handy one day when she needed those skills.

"Sun is nice," Santiago said in his improving, yet still halting, Common tongue. He stretched out on his rock to sun himself, his paw lazily dipping into the water, his tail curling and waving slightly above the surface from the other side. The sun was indeed nice, shining down on them and keeping them warm. The water was still pretty chill this time of year, as if it was holding onto the winter desperately, not wanting to warm up. It would eventually be warm enough to swim in, then warm enough to bask in. Ashe looked forward to that. Then maybe he could fish from further out, or just swim around trying to catch things himself.
"True, true," Ashe admitted. His shirt was off and he was welcoming the sun to give him an even tan now. He shifted the pole to one hand and ran the free one through his hair, pushing it back out of his eyes. He should probably get some sunglasses; the sun's reflection off the water was near enough to make him go blind.
Inyala weaved her fingers around and around, quickly dismantling the knot she had formed. Her small size, her small but sturdy fingers, aided her in her game. She tried to tie the next one tighter.

With a frown, Ashe stared into the water that refused to even so much as ripple. There didn't seem to be anything here. He'd had so many false hopes, so many failures and seaweed clumps, it was time to give up and try a different spot. He waited maybe twenty more seconds, giving this place one last shot at success, but when nothing happened, he reeled it in himself and tossed the old bait. He slipped the hook into the catch by the reel and gathered the rest of his supplies.
"C'mon, Santi, let's go try a different place." He trusted his Draconic to follow along behind him, so he set off without waiting around. Careful of his clunky boots and the rocks he was climbing over, he made his way down the curving line of the river. Santiago, as expected, stood up and stretched like a large feline. He yawned widely, darkness emitting like an exhale, then slowly padded after Ashe. His pace was careful, precise, yet somehow nonchalant. The man also whistled, getting Inyala's attention. She looked up, saw the pair were leaving, and got up herself. She grabbed the fishing line in her claws and scurried after them, easily climbing the rocks and darting around, taking in the fresh, salty air.

Santiago caught up with Ashe quickly, seeing as his legs were that much longer. Looking over at his bonded, Ashe reached out and patted his shoulder, appreciating the bond they shared. Santiago rumbled a sound similar to a purr at him, and shifted his weight to lean into the touch just slightly. They walked in comfortable silence for a while, perhaps twenty minutes, before Ashe saw a place that might be more promising. The water flowed faster here, but there were large rocks scattered across the river, sort of forming mini rapids. Ashe could swim out there, but he couldn't jump from rock to rock, and that might cause some problems.
Because he saw what looked like the best spot. A small lagoon on the other side, a wide half circle of still water that looked clean, but so deep the clarity was compromised.
"How about right there?' Ashe suggested, giving the area a nod. Santiago looked, following his gaze, and gave a shrug of his shoulder. He didn't care. Inyala took it upon herself to scout the area, climbing across the rocks closest to the water, the ones darkly colored from being half submerged. She even dipped her hand into the water, splashing a bit, watching for movement underneath. She hoped this would make a good spot for her master.

"Let me up," Ashe said suddenly. So suddenly that Santiago turned to look at him, trying to puzzle out what exactly he meant. Ashe had put most of his gear down, except for the pole and some of the most basic bait he used, then he put his hands on Santiago's back. Getting the picture, Santiago bent down, deciding to tolerate Ashe's weight. They were going to cross the water - it made sense to Santiago now. And he was the best at crossing things.
Once Ashe had his leg swung over and his pole secured, Santiago turned and approached the water's edge. With one leap, he cleared the distance to the first rock, and then the second. There were two more to cross before they would reach the still water, which Ashe hoped would be better to fish in than those rapids. Another leap, a soft landing. Ashe tried to balance his weight like he would on an Equillion, but it was harder without a saddle and holding a fishing pole.
Second to last rock, Ashe asked Santiago to pause and he cast out. He was a little further than Inyala would have liked. She would much rather him be here, closer to her, but at the same time she didn't want to go out there as well. She felt compelled to stand guard here, with Ashe's extra supplies.

The creature was little more than a dark shadow against the underside of the swelled river's sparkling and roiling surface. The area where the water was less tumultuous allowed for good food gathering; the small tidbits that hit the top of the water were much easier to track down. The creature was naturally drawn to those parts of the water; and it did seem that it had luck (or rather; unluck) today. No sooner than the tidbit hit the water did the dark streak shoot like lightning under the water to swallow up the thing; and it began to swim away; only to feel some kind of... Resistance. That wasn't right! The dark shape suddenly shoots off in the opposite direction, trying desperately to leave the area with it's prize. Suddenly; the tell-tale halberd breaks the surface above the water; shining with a dangerous gleam in the light. It raises near the surface of the water; spyhopping it seemed- curious yet hooked.

Ashe fell off of his Draconic at the first tug. Unprofessional and unlike him. Could you blame the man, though? How long had it been since he had actually caught something besides a seashell or kelp? He definitely hadn't expected something so strong to be pulling back right now of all times! He landed on his knee, having the sense at least to roll his body weight to his side and spin, so his legs went first. His feet scrambled to find something to brace against. When they lodged behind smaller rocks, slightly different angles but workable, his body jerked to a halt. His arms strained to hold onto whatever beast lurked below.
"What the..." Ashe muttered, cursing under his breath. His knee throbbed. He heard Inyala's alarm screech from her place on the shore, figured she would be in a hurry to come over and try to save him. What could she do? Ashe hoped she stayed safe, at least for now.
Santiago was just as startled as Ashe when the man fell off his back, but he was a little slow to react. He snapped his head around to see what happened, where Ashe had gone, and saw the man on the ground, and the shark surfacing... Santiago had never seen anything like the shark before, so he hesitated while Ashe tried desperately to make sure the line didn't snap.
"Come to papa..." He gave an experimental tug, then moved the pole from side to side.

Exactly how one was supposed to catch a giant creature that looked like it came straight out of prehistoric times with a fishing line or lure was really beyond most reasoning; but then again, the halberd shark didn't have reasoning anyway. The creature watches as the giant stick-finned thing moved in the water and didn't comprehend that the creature was indeed attached to itself, and thus, attached to the pole. In fact, the thing hardly noticed the hook in it's mouth. It seems to assess for a moment whether or not that the thing would make a decent meal or not. The proximity of the imposing (in comparison) draconic kept it from deciding to test whether or not the stick-fin tasted good. Instead, the spy hopping creature simply waits; and at the tug of the hook on it's mouth, moves forward a bit. It thrashes it's tail once; in an attempt to sway the hook. This didn't help the halberd escape. Whenever the pole is moved from side to side; the halberd shark shakes itself a bit, tugging at the line.

[[Seeing as it's been almost 2 years, Shark is long gone and we're gonna pretend they lost it]]
It had been a long time since Ashe had been here. Honestly, he thought that every time he went somewhere- for example, the mansion in the city, he thought of 'it's been a while!' every time it changed. Because it felt like it. In reality, it had only been days, maybe a month. But this place along the river, to fish with his Draconic? It had been a truly long time. More than a year, if he recalled correctly. Santiago was with him, of course. As his bonded, Santi had known when Ashe stepped foot back on the Canyon ground. Of course, they hadn't been separated as long, they just hadn't gone fishing together. They still had adventures. And one of them was with them today.
The little hatchling ran around their feet, eager to be going to swimming. She was... Smarter, Ashe felt, than either of the boys. It had to be from her mother's side, honestly, because Santi was Santi. And Ashe hadn't worked with her much yet to enhance those smarts. But here she was, spouting the occasional word like "Water!" and "Swim!". She had been born knowing common at a communicative level. She was going to be intimidating when she got older, that was for sure.

Santiago made sure they got to the River below, but he had other matters to attend to, he told Ashe. He'd wanted to make sure the hatchling wouldn't be a problem, but she seemed to be having a great time and Ashe could probably handle her. So he bowed to his bonded, then turned and leaped from boulder to boulder, until he was gone over a ridge, possibly into a cave. Santiago knew his way around the Canyon like Ashe knew the back of his hand; one day, Ashe might become as familiar, but they were still working on it.
He was left to focus on the task at hand; trying to get his fishing gear in order while dealing with a toddler smarter than he was. She had never really seen the water before, being kept safe inside their cave until he decided on an outing. Now she was running around, though not as graceful as her father just yet, and peeking into the water and scurrying off again. She made soft sounds of delight as she poked around, and Ashe tried his best to keep an eye on her while he got his fishing pole ready and cast out. He wedged the handle between two rocks, and called to his baby.

Lucrecia was at the water's edge now, practically wrapping her body around the rock she was on so she wouldn't tumble into the water, while at the same time she was stretching as far as she could to get down to the water's surface. Ashe wondered if there was a fish down there, or if she was simply admiring herself. He wouldn't put it past her to be the latter, honestly, and judging by how little attention she was giving him... He approached her, bravely leaving his pole unsupervised. He hoped he would hear the soft racket of the reel going out if there was a fish nibbling on it. And if something bigger came up and snagged the line, well... He would definitely be getting wet, because a shark would be too quick for him to get back over there! He'd deal with those hurdles when he came to them. For now, he had the cutest, prettiest baby in the Draconic world to attend to.

"Lu," Ashe said, trying to get her attention. Her tail twitched, letting him know that she had heard him and she was actively choosing to ignore him. He rolled his eyes and reached her, stooping down next to her to see what it was she was staring so intently at. And- either that was such a quick swimming fish that it disappeared before Ashe could even see a ripple, or it was just her reflection. Ashe sighed softly and rolled his eyes.
"Uncle Ashe," Lucretia said suddenly, startling him. He wasn't sure where she had picked up that habit, calling him uncle, but he was highly suspicious Santiago had taught her that. For starters, who else? And then, he supposed, since they were bonded, they were basically brothers. It made sense. But he had not expected to be called Uncle today.
"Yes, Lucretia?" Ashe dutifully responded, still peering over the edge into the water with her. She cocked her head at the sudden appearance of his reflection joining hers.

"Wanted ask. Why in water. Someone?"[/i] Ashe took a second to decipher what it was she was asking him. It was kind of jumbled, and half-thought thoughts, and it took him a second to realize she was thinking the reflection was someone else. It made since, since she hadn't been somewhere near a large body of water and might not have seen it before. "But. You. Two yous?' Ah, there it was. Her confusion because she didn't know what she looked like, and might think it was another Draconic altogether. But she knew what Ashe looked like, and there were two Ashes.
"This," He said, gesturing to the water. "Is a reflection. Water is a liquid, and liquids are shiny on top, enough to reflect your image back at you. This is you and me." He waved a hand, and she looked up at him, then down at the watery image, taking note that they were both doing the same thing at the same time! She looked thoughtful as he continued.

"Have you ever seen what you look like? This is it. It's not another you, exactly. When you touch it, it's just water." Ashe leaned down and put his hand in the water, then took it out. It was enough to disturb the image there and he chuckled as it reformed, ripply and messy, until the water in this particular place calmed down again. "See? You try it." He backed off slightly, giving her space to move, but he reached out and grabbed her around the waist just before the hind legs, holding on. "I got you, so you won't fall in!" He told her kindly.
Lucretia didn't acknowledge his assistance, but she did take full advantage. She leaned forward and swatted at the water's surface with first one paw and then the other, making quite a splash in each direction. She giggled to herself, watching her wriggling form take shape once again, and she splashed it again. "Why it stay?" She asked finally, after trying to get rid of it three more times.
