FebruaryAstrid [1] He'd missed a few months, that was for sure, he'd last properly explored the Mansion in the summer, and it was winter now. The Mansion's current weather was more mild than the rest of the city at the moment, there was still snow elsewhere, but the grounds were clear of snow and frost, and greenery was visibly starting to sprout.
That was part of the reason Nerius had decided to bring the critter he had, the small kitten was bundled up in an oversized scarf in his arms. Tailypo weren't a very hardy species, at this age at least, and the milder weather, and warmer interior building, seemed like a much better location to bring the kitten than the still frigid park or hazardous mines. The Mansion still wasn't the safest place, but with the majority of the population owning multiple giant monstrosities, was there really anywhere he could go that was completely free of dangers?

The other reason was, well, chocolate.
This time of year the citizens of the Labs celebrated a holiday about loving chocolate. Or at least that was what he'd gathered, Nerius had to admit he still didn't quite 'get' a lot about human culture. But chocolate was a distinctive feature of 'Vakrah', that much he was sure about at least. The local shops were filled with chocolate displays, often in shapes of hearts or roses. He wasn't quite sure why the latter was involved, but he liked plants to so that was fine?
Nerius hadn't seen any chocolate yet, but he was still outside, and sure enough, there were rose bushes lining the paths. The snacks would probably be inside, though you never really knew with the Mansion. He was headed there anyway, it would (probably) be warmer inside, and while Astrid didn't seem bothered by the cold yet, she wasn't really enjoying it either. That, or having to be bundled in the scarf.

As he got closer to the Mansion, Nerius was able to get a better look at the details. The building changed every month, sometimes looking run down, sometimes just strange, but this month it looked much more well kept, and actually like a mansion. The aesthetic of Mansion this month actually reminded him of his own house, though much larger. He'd have been surprised if the insides looked the same as well though, his house had been renovated after he'd bought it, and he didn't really understand human furniture themes well enough to match it to the building. It looked nice, but Nerius doubted his furnishings were 'Victorian'.
Then again, knowing the Mansion, he could enter the building, and it could look like a fish tank inside. There were many months where the 'inside' looked like 'outside', and he'd not explored this month enough to know if that would be the case. He hoped it'd be warmer, at least, the kitten in his arms was starting to get restless about being carried.

Fortunately, it didn't take long to get to the door of the Mansion, which was decorated with more flowers. Lavender this time, not roses, though if there was symbolism to that, Nerius didn't know. Same with the serpent and the bells, if those represented something, he didn't know what it was. But it could also just be a way of announcing that someone was entering or exiting, the way the bells chimed when he opened the door reminded Nerius of many a shop entrance.
As far as he could tell, there was no one around to notice someone entering the Mansion, though the ringing bells caught the attention of Astrid. She wasn't able to reach them, Nerius was already moving through the door as they sounded. At least she was distracted from wiggling for a moment, he'd dealt with squirmier critters, but it was always a nuisance to deal with while carrying one.

Nerius was more interested in the interior than the bells though, they were in the entry hall, and even so, it was already luxuriously decorated. Ornate furnishings, intricately detailed walls, dramatic sweeping curtains, it was as well kept on the inside as it was the outside. And.. yes, if the Mansion was anything to go by, he had missed the mark with 'Victorian' furnishings for his own home. Ah well, he liked what he had, and to be fair, most of what was here wouldn't be out of place in his home, there was just.. more.
The hall was fancy enough, but there were many doors leading to other rooms, and, not having any better way to pick one, Nerius opened the closest door. It appeared to be a 'sitting room', or, a 'living room'? He wasn't entirely sure the difference, but it looked interesting, so he headed inside. He'd explore in a moment, but first went over to one of the couches, making a little nest for the tailypo who'd been getting tired of being carried.

Astrid seemed content to lay under the scarf, little more than her orange eyes visible. He still couldn't ignore the tailypo, but at least for the moment he was free to explore the room. So far, it appeared to be a perfectly ordinary sitting room, with plenty of, well, seating, and side tables. Hopefully with snacks? There was a lot of decor, and there were bouquets of roses on most of the tables, but those weren't really edible.
The roses were a variety of different colors and, hold on, that one was made out of glass. The false rose was nestled in with a bouquet of ordinary ones, it looked rather precarious had a person put it in there, but with magically conjured Mansion items, it looked perfectly secure. It detached easily when Nerius went to pick it up though, making him even more sure that it had been held in place magically.

Nerius had a pair of those glass roses already, though they were a different color, and he'd brought them along to drop in the well later. They were pretty, but the well gave such interesting items, worth the loss of the glass trinkets. Besides, they were quite common, and he'd found enough to even keep extras in the past.
In case there were any more in with the regular flowers, he looked through the rest of the bouquet. They were all the actual plant kind; he'd have to remember to look through the rest of the bouquets as well, but for now he wanted to see what else was scattered across the tables. Hope fully chocolate.
He hadn't been searching long, but Astrid, noticing she was no longer being closely watched, wiggled out of the scarf and hopped up onto the back of the couch. Like Nerius, she was also on the hunt for snacks, though not so much sweets.

Nerius wasn't seeing any chocolate on that particular end table, but there was a card. Looking over it, it seemed to be about appreciation of someone, though it wasn't signed or addressed to anyone in particular. Could be useful if he ever needed to send someone a card, those could be ridiculously expensive in the shops. It's paper, ink, and glitter, why were cards more expensive than a coffee and a snack?
Still in search of the latter, he moved on to one of the larger coffee tables in the middle of the room. There was no coffee on it, but there was a rather elaborate tea set. It took up the majority of the table, and it wouldn't have been an easy thing to take with him, due to the size, and risk of spilling. Astrid though, was having better luck, she'd spotted a tower of finger sandwiches sitting on a side table. It was a bit of a jump from the back of the couch, but she was able to make it.

The 'thud' of her landing was enough to catch Nerius' attention though, and he looked up to see the tailypo eagerly eating one of the small sandwiches. Somehow he wasn't surprised, she was a bit of a bottomless pit when it came to food, not that he could judge. Were there any other snacks over there? It was worth a look, and he abandoned the tea set, going over to the tailypo and her find.
The whole tower was sandwiches, no chocolates or even dessert pastries. Probably better for the tailypo, than the sweets, but not quite what he was looking for. But if she was eating, she wasn't getting into trouble, so he left Astrid to her snack, and continued to examine the room. He didn't have to look far, there was one of those wreathes hanging just besides the table. Not edible, but pretty, and if he's only wanted chocolate, he could have just gone to the store.

It wasn't the easiest thing to put in his backpack, but it did fit, barely. A larger carrying bag might have been nice, but for now it worked. Besides, larger items were usually heavier items, and there was a limit to the amount he wanted to try to lug around. A magical bag would be ideal, lots of storage space, without weighing him down. But despite how commonplace all types of magical items were in the city, that wasn't something he'd seen for sale in any of the local shops.
Astrid looked to be enjoying her meal, she'd make good progress on the tower of finger sandwiches, despite her small size. It was an easy way to feed the eternally hungry kitten, and so Nerius wen back to searching the room. It was rather small, and though he wanted to check the rest of the bouquets for glass roses, he'd probably move on after the tailypo was done.

The roses all looked normal, the glass one he had found seemed to be the exception, a little hiccup in the magical generation of the decor, perhaps? A bit of a disappointment, but there was still plenty of house to explore. Some months seemed to have no end to the rooms, maybe all the months, Nerius hadn't explored every month so he couldn't say for sure.
Having finished checking the bouquets, Nerius glanced over to see how the tailypo was doing. She.. she was on the last sandwich. Just. How. He could have sworn there were more sandwiches than kitten when she'd started, but somehow the last of the food disappeared as walked over to the table. Astrid looked up at him, and purred, nudging up against him arm in the way that usually meant she wanted something. "Oh, now you want to be carried again," still, he wasn't complaining, maybe she'd be willing to sit still for a while after that.

Nerius grabbed the scarf he'd brought on the way out, shoving it in his backpack, it was warm enough in here that he didn't need to bundle up the tailypo. She was content to be carried for now, but he doubted that would last too long. Exiting though the door he'd entered, Nerius was half surprised the entryway was the same as it had been before. The rooms shifted sometimes, which made it all the easier to get lost, which was easy enough with how the rooms were strung together.
He found it a little odd how the sitting room was a dead end right off the main hall, but then, the Mansion was nothing if not inconsistent. There were an assortment of doors to choose from off the entry hall, and still not having a better way of choosing, opened the nearest door. It was... another sitting room. And it didn't seem to lead to another room either.

Wanting something a little more different, Nerius moved on to the next door, which... was also a sitting room. He moved on to a few more doors, all of which lead to what he was fairly sure was the same exact looking room. It probably wasn't the same room, unless the tray of finger sandwiches refilled when he wasn't looking. Which, actually was completely possible, he realized.
Still, he'd rather an entirely new room, so he kept looking, and after several more doors opened into what looked like a dining room. That was something at least, and Nerius decided to explore that room. The table was, sadly, empty of food, Astrid had perked up when she'd spotted it, apparently recognizing a humanoid food area, despite having just eaten. It was "romantically decorated", Nerius knew enough about human culture to pick up on what the roses and candles represented, but he couldn't eat candles and roses.
