The mote was circling him now, Nerius realized, and he suspected it would continue to follow him, now that he had the crystal. Said crystal was placed in the small carry pouch he'd brought, and was tied to his belt. He usually used those for mining, but figured he might find something small that it would come in useful for, and it did. Now the task was getting back down, and somehow the wrapping of the box only seemed slipperier. The lumpy, uneven surface only made it worse, and careful as he was, as Nerius approached the edge of the box, it sloped downward suddenly, and he slipped off with a loud yelp.
The landing was softer than he'd expected, he'd landed in a large structure of gingerbread and frosting, he realized, staring up at the decorated ceiling. Russet had heard the noise, and was concerned, though the leash kept him from going to investigate. Thankfully, the building he was tied to wasn't where Nerius had landed.

He'd landed in a giant dessert, maybe it was the impact talking, but he was oddly okay with this. It was softer than the roof of the house had been, but it was impossible to tell now what it was he'd actually landed on. What he could tell was that the gingerbread was soft, and there was a lot of icing, which was sprinkled with jelly candies and shaped chocolate pieces. After a few moments of being dazed, Nerius pushed himself up to a sitting position. It looked even more delicious from up there, and it was, well tempting.
It probably wasn't the best idea eat food from the Mansion, but he couldn't sense any magic tied to it, and the leafscatter had been fine (and he'd had a lot, for something his size), and he'd never heard of anyone having side effects from eating, and he'd heard of plenty of people eating it just fine. It couldn't hurt just to have a little taste.

Okay, maybe more than a little. Because as Nerius tore off a chunk of the gingerbread, dipped it in icing, and took a bite, he realized it was delicious. Way better than those terrible kits they sold in the store, then again those weren't meant to be eaten, so maybe that was the point. Keep hungry people from eating the decor. But this decor had no such protection, and Nerius... maaaaaaybe tore off another piece. But hey, who was counting.
Russet wasn't, but he was trying to get loose, the candycane was sturdy, but not well anchored to the wall, and it didn't take long for the hyperactive leafscatter, to knock it loose. He was still a little slowed by the leash, but that didn't stop him from scampering up the side of the gingerbread house, and onto the roof. The roof was a bit more of a challenge for the little critter, the icing shapes were almost as tall as he was.

Nerius still wasn't counting, but uh, he may have tried some of the jelly candy (not the best match), and the chocolate bits. Well, what he'd thought were chocolate bits, but were actually some kind of candy coating. White chocolate? Something, he didn't know what it was called, just that it was good, and as much as he loved chocolate, probably matched the gingerbread better. There were a lot of large pieces of it around, but it was thin enough to easily break off smaller pieces to use as a gingerbread topper.
It was quite a climb for the little leafscatter, but finally Russet made it to the top of the roof, where he could see Nerius below. He didn't really want to be stuck in the strange place alone, so he slowly made his way down the other side. It wasn't really any easier than the way up, there was just as much icing on the other side.

Look, he hadn't eaten that much of the gingerbread; it was impossible to tell how much there had been before, and you couldn't prove otherwise! Besides, the entire thing he'd landed on was really one piece, so technically he was still on his first piece. And really, how often did you fall into a giant dessert? Nerius just.. wanted to take advantage of the situation.
Which was why he was still eating his- First piece! When Russet scampered up to him. It was a bit difficult for the small creature, and he was covered in frosting by the time he got there, where he started licking it off his paws. "The icing's great, isn't it," Nerius spoke to the leafscatter, as he reached over to give him a pet. And to grab the leash, he wasn't sure how Russet had gotten loose, but at least he'd wandered over, instead of running off who knows where.

As delicious as it was, the icing wasn't terribly comfortable to sit in, and after a little more snacking, Nerius decided it wasn't really where he wanted to stay. It was sticky, and a mix of meltly and crunchy, and all in his cloths and hair. It also wasn't helping as Nerius tried to climb out of the dessert, and he struggled to stand up. But he was successful in the end, but he was still stuck in the middle of the dessert.
It was too much to just step over, but maybe he could sort of crawl awkwardly to the edge. It wouldn't really support his weight, the gingerbread would get smushed, but he wouldn't fall through it like a loose snowdrift either. It was worth a shot, but first he picked up Russet, setting the leafscatter on his shoulder. He was a bit less energetic now, the sugar buzz seemed to be wearing off, which would make things easier.

Angling the leafscatter so he wouldn't fall off, Nerius awkwardly climbed onto the gingerbread. It sunk down, like a very soft pillow, and he could feel it getting embedded into the knee area of his pants. That part was unpleasant, but he was still sort of on top of the dessert, and was able to crawl across it. Fortunately, it was only a few feet, and he managed to get to the edge without any issue. Standing back up this time was a little easier, though he was still coated in icing and even more gingerbread.
There was one slight issue, he was on the other side of the gingerbread house, and now would have to find another way back around and out to the door. He couldn't see it from here, but knew it was on the other side of the house, and over the train tracks, but first he had to walk the long way around the gingerbread house.

It wouldn't be the way he'd gone before, but as Nerius walked around the house, he could see tracks in the distance, half hidden behind one of the pine shrubs. It was tall enough he could walk under it, though he had to duck, grabbing Russet so the sleepy leafscatter didn't fall off. He was also pretty sure some pine needles got stuck in the icing in his hair.
Nerius didn't know if there was a train going around, but just in case, it would be better not to walk directly on the tracks. They were small, more like a ride for children than an actual train, but it still wouldn't be pleasant to be hit by it. The track went two ways, but he followed in the direction back around the gingerbread house, stopping to grab his backpack on the way. It was an easy way to navigate the strange room, actually, there were no massive presents or prickly shrubs in the way of the track.

It didn't take too long before Nerius could see the door, and he veered away from the tracks, heading in that direction. He wouldn't have minded exploring the room a bit more, or the rest of the mansion for that matter, but all the frosting and gingerbread on his person was starting to feel really gross. Not to mention he could really go for a nap pretty soon. Russet was already to that point, and Nerius had to shift the leafscatter to be holding him with one arm.
They were both ready to go, and it wasn't as it it were an unproductive trip. He'd found a magical crystal, of all things. Sure, Nerius always hoped to find something magic related on these trips, but he wasn't expecting something quite as dramatic as a crystal. It was odd that it didn't have an element; it felt similar to hollow spells, and it likely was some kind of 'hollow' crystal.

Magic wasn't well documented here, and most of what was were on the crystals from the mines. Not to mention people who didn't know much about magic would try to make guesses, and those were never quite right. He'd have to do some more digging for information, would they work like hollow magic in some of the Labs creatures, capable of applying to any spell type? Nerius doubted it, more likely the magic would only be able to produce hollow spells. That wouldn't be as useful as an elemental node, but wasn't worthless, there were many hollow spells that were very useful.
It was easy to find the front door, it was just down the hall Nerius had entered, and that wasn't always the case with the mansion. But that wasn't the case today, and he was able to leave though the front door without any issues, other than the ringing of the bell waking the leafscatter a little.

Russet blinked sleepily as he looked around, but he didn't really want to wake, and after a few moments, snuggled back down for a snooze. Nerius was a big jealous, he still had a ways to go, though the path was at least as straight forward leaving as it had been arriving. It was still snowing a little, but the path remained mostly clear, an effect of the mansion's magic, no doubt.
Speaking of which, he really ought to visit the wishing well on the way out, Nerius had a lot of the bells. He likely wouldn't explore again before the month changed, and didn't really want to come back just to deposit them. Another detour to getting home, but at least it was mostly on the way, and if it were anything like the months before, it would be worth it. But once that was taken care of, Nerius would follow the path out, and he and Russet would go home.
- Nerius and Russet leave the Mansion, grabbing any items on the way out. -

February
(unnamed glacier scuta)
[1]
Nerius had to admit he wasn't the best about consistently exploring the mansion, which was a bit of a shame, as there were plenty of unusual items that could only be found in a single month. He was very interested in visiting this month, though, not for the magic. He'd.. he'd heard it was chocolate month, okay? Magic AND chocolate? Best combination ever! He wasn't entirely sure what else to expect though, all he'd ever really paid attention about the, er, Vakrah? holiday was it featured a lot of chocolate. And something about love, but he loved chocolate, so that was kind of the same thing?
He wasn't alone as he visited the mansion; the glacier scuta he'd brought with him had been a spur of the moment decision. It was a newer acquisition, he hadn't even named it yet, but this would be a decent way to get the critter more used to him. It had worked for the plants, at least.

Besides, he didn't really have an idea for a better pet to bring. Most were either too large to easily fit in the mansion, or were reptiles, and wouldn't do well in the still below freezing weather. It was still winter, after all, and even if Labs winters didn't get that cold (by Nerius' standards), it was still too chilly for him to drag something cold blooded like a salaves out here. The scuta was, erm, well, he was pretty sure it was a mammal, but it was also specifically a cold dwelling breed.
And sure enough, the creature looked entirely comfortable as it followed along with him, on a leash, as it hadn't been trained any. Well, she hadn't been trained any, he'd been informed the scuta was a female when adopting. Non sentient creatures didn't generally care about that much, but it did seem rude to refer to a living being as 'it'.

Nerius still didn't have a name for her though, maybe he'd be able to think of something after interacting with the critter a bit. It wasn't urgent, in any case, he wasn't going to be doing any training or anything. And thankfully, so far the scuta seemed pretty easygoing, even without any training, or presumably, leash experience. That was part of why she'd been picked, there were several critters in his kennel that Nerius wanted to work with, but they needed a little too much work for a mansion trip.
The scuta was pretty disinterested in him, but at least didn't cause any trouble on their trip up to the mansion itself. He could have explored the grounds, but he'd spent more time outside than in, the last few visits, and from what he'd heard, this month focused more on the actual building. Plus, that was a more reasonable place to find chocolates, than just sitting on the lawn.
