Her eyes narrowed in on some cardboard boxes. It would take her a while to search them, but it wasn’t as though she didn’t have the time to spare. She tugged on Rusty’s leash, guiding him over towards the boxes. She felt bad keeping him tied up, but he was untrained and she needed to keep him safe.
“Keep your eyes peeled for anything useful,” she told him.
She didn’t actually expect Rusty to be all that helpful, but the sentiment had to count for something. She felt excitement thrum through her body at the prospect of investigating the room. Searching through boxes was something she’d had to do before. Clues could be hiding anywhere after all!
“Be careful though. These boxes might have broken glass or other dangerous items,” she told him.
She grabbed the first box, figuring she should start with the smaller ones. It was heavier than expected.

Fanged hesitated slightly. It wasn’t normally like her to be frightened, but recent circumstances had her on edge. She set the box down on a nearby table, figuring that would be the safest way to open it.
“Now be careful. Stay close to me,” she told Rusty.
He had little choice in the matter, considering she could simply shorten his leash if the situation required it. Rusty seemed content to lie down near her legs. From there, she could angle the box away from him while she opened it. It was held closed by a piece of packing tape. Fanged had no scissors which meant her fingernails would be her only tool to open it. It took her a great deal longer than it should have to pry the end of the tape free from the box. Once she’d done that, peeling away the rest of the tape was easy.

What a pretty leaf to be found inside of the box!

The first thing of note inside the box was a strangely shaped leaf. It had an otherworldly feel to it that compelled her to collect it. Perhaps the purpose of the leaves would become clear to her in time? The leave had been sitting on top of a handful of decorations. She grabbed the first one in reach which ended up being a plastic skull. She tapped her fingernails against its surface, nodding to herself when the sound of cheap plastic met her ears. She tossed the skull to the ground. Rusty immediately perked up. He pounced forward, batting his paws lightly against the skull as it skidded past him. It was the liveliest Fanged had ever seen him.
“You can play while I continue to look through these,” she told him.
It put her at ease to see her pet so relaxed. It did wonders to her own emotions.

The second item she pulled free from the box was an old banner. The letters printed on the surface spelled out Vai Min Mur. It was a little dusty, but it was way cleaner than her skin currently was. Her own comfort could wait for a moment, however. She stepped over towards Rusty and crouched down. She moved to wipe the grime from his fur while he was still distracted with the plastic skull. He flinched slightly at the contact, but he allowed her to continue. That was an excellent sign that he was starting to trust her.
“You’ll feel a lot better once you’re a little cleaner,” she told him.
She wiped as much grime and dirt as she could. She put the banner down once she felt that he’d been adequately cleaned.
“You’ll need to take care of the rest, but you look a lot better,” she said.

The banner was now too filthy to use on her own skin. If she wanted to get cleaner, she’d need to find something else. She placed the rag out of the way. It could be harmful for Rusty if he were to come in contact with it again. There was no way of knowing what kind of germs had gathered on it.
“Water would be better for cleaning up, but we don’t exactly have any,” she said.
Fanged stepped back over to the boxes, this time grabbing a medium sized box. It was still small enough to fit on the table. Hopefully it contained as many things as the size suggested. The one wasn’t even taped shut. The lid was simply folded together in a manner that kept it closed. It was rather simple to open. Rusty went back to playing with the plastic skull. With him distracted, Fanged took the time to look through the box.

The box had a variety of items, each of them of little use to her. There were a few packets of fake cobwebs, which were especially useless considering she was surrounded by the real deal.
“Snow in a can I am able to understand, but fake cobwebs just seem like the intention is to create the appearance of an undusted house,” she commented. “Are cobwebs even that scary without spiders? Though I suppose the intention is to cover the fake cobwebs with fake spiders.”
Rusty seemed to be growing used to her ramblings. He was an excellent listener which Fanged considered to be a good trait. She pulled out a notebook from the box. It would have seemed out of place if not for the cartoonish spiders that adorned the front of the cover. She flipped it open, curious if there was writing inside of it. The front pages were blank.

She flipped through the rest of the notebook to verify that the entire thing was blank. If you didn’t have a way to luck up your notebook, it was smart to pick a random page about three quarters through the book and start writing from there. It would be a waste of paper, but it would keep nosy people away from your writing. The entire notebook was blank aside from a single page. Most people wouldn’t have found it, but Fanged was not most people.
“At the midnight hour, silence the clock,” she read aloud. “Any idea what it means, Rusty?”
The halfbreed perked up, but he had no answer for her. It was a riddle for her to solve alone. She didn’t think it was anywhere close to midnight. It would be a while before it became relevant to her.
“I suppose we should take a look at another box.”

She grabbed another medium sized box. This one felt immediately felt strange, as though something were moving inside. She shuddered at the thought and moved the box over towards the table. She was growing a bit of a box collection by now and it was only certain to grow in the immediate future. Rusty seemed quite intrigued by them. She supposed that was simply the cat creature DNA in him acting out. Either way, the boxes themselves weren’t harmful. He could play with the empty shells all he wanted. This box was still a mystery to her. It didn’t look as though it were as easy to open as the other two. She needed something sharp before she would be able to open it. For now, she’d have to move onto another box and hope to find some scissors or a knife. Or perhaps even the broken glass she had warned Rusty about.

She grabbed one of the larger boxes, figuring that she might as well go big for once. The box she picked had a fair amount of weight to it. It was a strong contender for being the one to contain office supplies. She opened the box with ease. It was simply closed by pressing the flaps on the top together. The inside of the box did not contain the abundance of office supplies she was hoping for. She dug through the entirety of the box, discarding the various holiday decorations contained within. Just as she was about to give up hope, her fingers met with the cool metal of a razor blade. The rust was concerning, but it would be enough to open the other box.
“A rusty blade for a Rusty cat,” Fanged grinned at the halfbreed.
It was disappointing that he was unable to understand puns. She would have to appreciate her own joke alone.

Equipped with the razor blade, she stalked over to the box that shook with movement every few moments. Now that she had a weapon, she could viciously eliminate any small sized critter that wished her harm. Not that she was particularly willing to kill things at the moment. She had not much money to her name. She would be better off trying to sell any small critters that attacked.
“Prepare for the worst,” she warned Rusty.
The halfbreed shook himself. His fur was looking less drab and grimy. His orange markings were brighter and it made him look a lot more handsome.
“I bet you’ll be fighting off all the lady cats in no time,” she joked.
She was only delaying the inevitable with her jokes. Without further hesitation, she took the blade and stuck it into the top of the cardboard box. She then slid it towards both corners, cutting the top free.

She steeled herself, ready for the worst as she opened the lid. Half expecting a rabid rat or other rodent like creature, Fanged relaxed when the creature that greeted her was a pile of slime. Slime could be harmful in that it could potentially cause illness, but this was a pocket pet and therefore, relatively safe.
“That’s a good find. There’s a store in town that’ll buy creatures like these,” she told Rusty.
Rusty had no concept of money, but her finding future credits meant that they’d have money to buy some food. The slime monster wasn’t the only thing of note inside the box. There were more of the spooky looking leaves and a strange glowing orb. Fanged picked up the spherical object, squinting at the strange mist that swirled inside. It almost seemed like something that could be found at a carnival. Was it perhaps a crystal ball?

The last object in the box was slightly more concerning. It was a jar filled with what appeared to be teeth. Fanged hesitated to take it on account of a jar of teeth being completely unnerving, but it was still an object that could be sold if she found the right buyer.
“We’ll stash these here for now while we explore the rest of this place. There shouldn’t be any scavengers, the mansion is usually good about keeping people separated.”
She figured that she wouldn’t be able to find much else within the remaining boxes. That had been one of the few boxes not filled entirely with junk. She kept a hold on the rusty razor blade. It might come in handy later. For now, she was ready to leave the room. The door was simply located on the opposite end of the room. She tugged on Rusty’s leash and led him through the door.

You can hear a shakey moaning from.... where is it? You could swear you heard it around here somewhere... You don't even have time to investigate - instead, the very earth beneth your feet crumble, and the rotting grey flesh of those that were once living plunge out of the ground and into the air, sending specks of dirt and clods of withering grass flying as their clawed fingers grab at your legs! Everything around you seems to be screaming, and it will surely take all the courage and strength within' you to break free of this 'garden' of hands!
