She moved over towards a bookshelf that was on the other side of the room. Voxel followed her, his eyes glittering with curiosity. She pried the base of the top shelf, wiggling it until it could be removed from the bookcase. Eventually, she had a perfect plank of wood that could be used as a ramp. She placed it across the bookcase that she intended to climb on. She motioned for Voxel to climb it and the Specter complied. He tentatively scaled the plank until he was perched on top of the bookcase. Fanged was a bit doubtful that the shelf would hold her weight, but she managed to climb up as well.
“Is that a hatch up there?” Now that she could see a bit better, there certainly appeared to be a square indentation in the ceiling. “Is that where the ghost went? We should try and get up there.”

When she examined it closer, she could see a rope hanging down from the ceiling. That was clearly what was meant to be used to open the hatch. She wasn’t quite tall enough to reach it, but if she risked jumping, she was sure she could grab it. Voxel watched her carefully, he inched closer to her, worried that the woman was about to do something risky. If she fell, there would be nothing he could do to help her.
“I’ll be fine. I think my balance is pretty good!”
Voxel reacted with a skeptical look, but Fanged was determined to prove him wrong. She leaned up on the tips of her feet and made sure she was comfortably on the top of the bookcase. When she felt ready, she braced herself and leaped up. Her hand met the rope at the apex of her jump and she was quick to grasp it.

The unforeseen part of her plan was the brief moment in which she was hanging in the air. That split second, she was convinced that she was going to fall. The hatch lurched open, dropping her a few inches until her feet met the top of the bookshelf once again. Her heart pounded rapidly and when she let go of the rope, she had to wipe her sweaty palms on the fabric of her jeans.
“Well that was certainly an adventure. Let’s see what that uncovered.”
Voxel was not quite as thrilled as she was. He bit at her ankles, his teeth momentarily making contact with her skin. It was the only way that they could make true physical contact. Fanged didn’t even mind the slight pain that accompanied his teeth. She leaned down and mimed patting the top of his head. That would be the closest they would get to real head pats.

A rope staircase was revealing, leading up and into the hatch. Her first thought was that it was going to be difficult for Voxel to climb up, but the Specter was quite determined. Fanged would help Voxel climb the rope by holding the bottom steady, then he would at least have an angle that he could use to keep his paws steady as needed.
“Okay, whenever you’re ready, we’ll try to get you up there.”
Voxel hesitated for a moment. Even though he was ethereal, he still had constraints placed on his form. He didn’t simply sink through the earth he just didn’t quite make physical contact with it. He didn’t touch things in a physical manner, but he wasn’t able to fly. He would use the rope as guidance to lead him up to the next floor. It took a few minutes, but eventually he managed to make it up.

When Voxel was up the rope staircase, it was her turn to make her ascent. Fanged felt a little nervous, but Voxel making it up safely made her feel more secure as she followed him. The rope staircase swung underneath her weight, but it remained intact as she scaled it. “Alright that was a bit scary, but we both made it,” she commented to Voxel as she pushed her way through the hatch. Voxel had his gaze fixed on the centre of the new room. To Fanged’s surprise they weren’t alone. A large black and purple figure stood before them in the darkness. Glowing, purple eyes met with hers. Rather than feel fear, Fanged felt a great deal of affection fill her body. It was as though magic compelled her to love this creature. The logical part of her mind had shut down and all that remained was pure emotion. She stood frozen for a few moments, her mind taking a great deal of time to clear. When she regained her senses, she was able to speak with the creature in the room. “So, you’re the ghost we’ve been chasing I presume? You’re not as scary as I would have imagined.” (Voxel 28 1/5, 28 1/5 | Casper 0 1/5, 0 1/5) 51

The creature stepped closer their eyes fixed on hers. Fanged felt a strange absence of fear. Instead, she almost felt a strange melancholy emitting from the creature. She could tell that the creature was definitely ethereal. It held itself with the same stance that Voxel did. One that connected with the ground, without quite touching it. She had expected the creature to be hostile, but it was rather calm and collected, as though recognizing that she had been chasing it without intention to harm.
“Voxel stay close to me,” she told him, not wanting him to accidentally aggravate the Balgor.
The Balgor seemed content to watch her, gauging her next move. When it became clear they were at a stalemate, she decided to take a step closer, her hand held out.
“You’ve been leading us around, haven’t you? Is there something you wanted from us? I’d like to be friends.”
Speaking to the Balgor was a little nerve-wracking. Having Voxel close to her helped keep her calm. Voxel allowed her to have some experience dealing with ethereal pets. From what little she knew about Balgor, she had learned that there was a breed that was ethereal, allowing that ability to be present in their lineage.

The Balgor took a step forward and sniffed at her hand. Even though he was ethereal, Fanged could still feel the warmth of his breath against her skin. She expected the creature to be a bit more fierce than what was being shown to her, but she wasn’t about to complain.
“I take that as a sign that we can be friends?”
Voxel took her friendliness as a signal to try and make friends as well. He slunk forward, wary, but eager to meet the ghost face to face. The Balgor responded by leaning forward and sniffing at Voxel. Fanged had to admit, she expected her first meeting with the ghost to be more eventful than this. Instead, she was met with a creature who appeared to be simply lost in the mansion. She had no knowledge of where it had come from, or if it even had an owner. At this point, it looked like it would be simple enough to take the Balgor home with her, but she would still need to be careful.
“How did you wind up in here? Did someone leave you here, or did you escape all on your own?” Fanged spoke kindly to the Balgor.

Two little glimmering roses could be found nearby. But they are quite dark; that may make it easier to find them (or harder, depending on the background). [Up to #50]

The Balgor shook itself, taking a step closer at the sound of her words. Voxel was at ease now, following the Balgor closely as it drew closer to Fanged. The Balgor sat down near her, regarding her with a curious gaze. Fanged wondered what had made the creature stop running. Had they been playing a game? Was the Balgor tired now? The Balgor didn’t seem quite sure what to do with her. It was clear that the woman and her strange pet meant no harm, but it was still wary about her.
“That’s a good Balgor, we’re not going to hurt you. You’re doing a great job.”
It became clear that the Balgor was certainly lost and had not intended on winding up in the mansion. Voxel nudged at the space near the Balgor’s heels, as though trying to force it to make a decision. The Balgor didn’t snap at him, which Fanged was impressed by. It appeared to be a soft-hearted creature, simply misunderstood to be some monstrous ghost. She felt a pang of sympathy, wanting desperately to take the creature with her and out of the confusing terrain that was the mansion. The Balgor had nobody to explain what the mansion was.

“How about we get out of here, get you somewhere safe,” Fanged suggested.
The Balgor glanced at her, not quite understanding her words. Fanged decided she was going to have to lead the creature out of here and she was going to need Voxel’s help to do so. The two ethereal creatures seemed to be getting along well enough. It wasn’t an instant friendship like Rusty’s and Voxel’s had been, but that was to be expected. Not every creature was as friendly as the Lazaru was.
“We’ll have to take a different route to get outside, but if we pick the rooms right we should be able to reach the exit in no time at all.”
Voxel understood that she was intending to lead. He nipped at the Balgor’s heels, trying to herd him forward. The Balgor was confused, but complied with the request. Fanged glanced around, spotting a door that looked promising. She opened it and Voxel herded the Balgor through it. When both of her pets were through, Fanged followed them.
“There are windows here and it looks like we’re back on ground level. It should be simple to get outside now.”
The door in this room thankfully led them back to the front steps of the mansion. Once they were outside, Fanged decided that she would take the Balgor home with her for the time being.

It took a few days before Fanged was prepared to return to the mansion. In that time, she had acquired a new companion creature. Heather was a Pasha-Sarane and while she could be a little snooty, she seemed to fit well in Fanged’s kennel. The Balgor she had found the last time she was here hadn’t had an owner. In the end, Fanged had ended up keeping the lost, ethereal creature. “You’re really restless aren’t you?” Fanged questioned the Pasha as she fidgeted in place. They had stopped just short of the entrance to the mansion. She had ordered Heather specifically, paying out of pocket for the creature. The description of her species had appealed to Fanged and when the opportunity had come up, she’d been quick to purchase the Pasha. Fanged had been a bit apprehensive taking her to the mansion, but the Pasha had been eager enough to go along with her. (Heather 0 1/5, 7 1/5) 56

It felt a bit different to be visiting the mansion without an active request for investigation. She had grown so used to having an objective, the freedom of exploration was a bit foreign to her now. She would still take things easy. Heather was still a baby and this outing would be her first.
“I don’t think you’ve even mastered walking yet,” she teased the Pasha.
She had grown accustomed the layout of the mansion this month. The Victorian theme had been a constant and she felt that it was fairly safe to take Heather into the mansion. She led the Pasha up the steps and ushered her inside. Heather was a bit hesitant, but she was curious to explore the new area. The first room was rather quaint, allowing the mansion to appear like a real home for once. Though the absence of people made it appear hauntingly lonely.

Fanged felt a deep sense of melancholy overtake her for a moment. She had somewhat desensitized to the weirdness of the mansion, but she deeply disliked when it messed with her emotions.
“Maybe some exploration will help me take my mind off things,” she commented.
Heather followed the woman as she walked further into the room. With Fanged there for protection, the baby pet didn’t have to worry so much about danger. Fanged felt a bit nervous being relied on for protection, but she understood that was the responsibility she had taken when she purchased the baby pet. When creatures were young, they were still very vulnerable and without the protection of their parents, Fanged had to fill that role. She didn’t think Heather had parents in a conventional sense. She wasn’t quite certain how very special pets were created, but she assumed that they weren’t naturally born. Few things in the labs were.

“You’re a bit of a mystery, aren’t you? I guess that’s alright. We all have our secrets after all,” she said.
Questioning how the lab worked made her head spin. To keep her sanity, it was best not to think too deeply about those sort of things. She had little knowledge about how the labs actually worked and she had a suspicion that the labs preferred it to be that way. Heather stuck close to Fanged, using the woman for protection. She was grateful for the creatures she had in her life and she wouldn’t change that.
“Is there any way you’d prefer we go?” she questioned the Pasha.
Heather blinked up at her with bright eyes. The creature seemed a bit unsure of herself. She was still inexperienced and lacked the self-confidence that her other creatures had. Fanged didn’t have that much experience with baby pets, but she was eager to learn.
