Even Minnow could cross the length of the room in no time at all. Hopefully that meant this was more of a storage area. If that was the case, there should theoretically be exciting stuff to be found here.
“Just keep yourself out of danger. That’s all I ask of you in here, okay?”
She doubted Minnow understood her language, but she liked talking to her creatures. It made her feel less lonely. There were plenty of cupboards to sift through in this area. The flooring was hardwood, but there were still signs of foliage from outside present. Minnow was busy batting at a pile of green leaves that had somehow ended up indoors. Fanged grinned at the cuteness and opened up one of the higher cupboards. She braced herself for an explosion, but relaxed again once the air remained still. That wasn’t to say that the fireworks had completely stopped.

Silent sparks of light danced across the entirety of the room. Fanged tracked them to see if they were of any significance, but they appeared to form randomly and disappear just as suddenly. The colours also repeated in a random order. The whole thing seemed rather insignificant. The lights were probably only there as an unconventional source of light for the room.
“Maybe it would be fun to chase them.” She suggested to Minnow. The little Tailypo was too distracted by the leaves still to even take notice to the dancing lights.
The first cupboard she opened was a little difficult for her to reach into. There would be no peering inside beforehand. She’d have to rely on touch alone to see if she could pull any objects out. It would be bad luck if he fingers met a mousetrap or something equally inconvenient. She raised her hand and placed it inside.

She braced herself for the speculated mousetrap. To her surprise, the cupboard was safe enough for her to at least sneak her hand in. Minnow perked up at the new sound, looking up from her pile of leaves to see what Fanged was up to. After a few moments of searching, she concluded that the cupboard she was searching was completely bare. And if it wasn’t bare, then the items were just out of reach. She couldn’t see anything she’d be able to stand on to give her extra height so it was best to just move onto another cupboard. The next cupboard she picked was a little lower. She couldn’t quite see into it, but her hand would be able to reach further. She slid the door open and hesitated for a moment. She didn’t like to act completely blindly, but she didn’t have much of a choice here if she wanted to see what was in the cupboard.

July Fanged and Minnow had still been inside the mansion when the month had changed over. The setting changed dramatically when she and Minnow entered a new room. It was almost as if they had stepped straight through a portal. Her shoes met with sand and after a brief worry that it would be impossible to get out of her clothing, she adjusted to the new environment. Minnow was eager to play in the sand having never seen the substance before. “It’s not my problem if you get dirty,” she muttered. Of course, she didn’t truly mind. Minnow was rather adorable and used her charm to get her way more than once. Fanged herself was eager to explore the new mansion theme. The room they found themselves in now was covered in a heavy blanket of sand. If she found herself right next to the ocean, she wouldn’t have been surprised. (Minnow 6 1/5, 13 1/5) 1

Fanged didn’t have much experience with the ocean. She never considered herself to be much of a swimmer or interested in water activities. That could always change of course and this was a good opportunity to familiarize herself with water.
“Are you like a regular cat? Do you have a distaste for water?” she asked Minnow aloud. The small kittenoid paused for a moment and looked up at her as though considering her words. After a moment, she only responded with a confused tilt of the head. “Ah, I suppose you don’t know then.”
She didn’t know the overall capabilities of Minnow’s species. After all she was still just a baby. Her species had been released by a competitor to the Labs. She didn’t know much about them and quite frankly, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to know. She knew that the Labs could be shady so she didn’t see how a competitor wouldn’t be.

The thought was a little unnerving, but it intrigued her all the same. Not enough to do anything dangerous, but enough to keep her eyes peeled and her ears open for additional info. She turned her attention to the room. Minnow was content enough to explore the sand. She seemed happy to curl up on top of its warmth and dig small holes with her tiny paws. Her efforts were quite ineffective, but she was enjoying it. This also gave Fanged ample time to check around the room without having to worry about the Tailypo.
“What secrets are you hiding this month?” she questioned.
The furniture in the room was constructed entirely out of wood and appeared rather lavish. She approached a table, marveling at the expert craftsmanship that had gone into it. How did the mansion acquire such pieces? Did it make them itself or get them from somewhere?

She ran her fingers along the wood, dipping her fingers in each groove in the wood. She wished she could construct something half as well as this but she never had time to hone her skills to that degree. Detective work was her first and foremost passion. She didn’t see herself giving up her tendency towards investigations anytime soon. As Fanged moved to the next piece of furniture, Minnow got up to join her.
The companionship was welcome. She was always happy when her pets took an interest in investigation work as well. Even if it was much less formal in the mansion, there were still procedures that she liked to follow. She certainly enjoyed having her pets to help her out with such things. She leaned down and stroked Minnow’s fur. The creature leaned into her touch for a brief moment before darting away to investigate a table that was close by.

Fanged left Minnow to it. The Tailypo moved closer to the table. If there was anything interesting to be found she was certain the Tailypo would alert her to it. With that in mind she went to investigate something that had a greater chance of yielding treasure. There was a bookshelf to her left though surprisingly it wasn’t filled with books like one might expect.
“Curious. Are those scrolls? Magical maybe? Or perhaps they are simply old.” The only way for her to find out would be to read them. As she got closer to the shelf, she also saw various figures placed on the surface of the wooden shelves. “I don’t think these are real creatures,” she mused. They appeared to be figures of different sea monsters, but none that were created by the Labs. There were many halfbreeds that she was unfamiliar with, but these seemed more mythical than realistic depictions. She picked one up and studied it.

Also on the shelf were a bunch of shells that Fanged felt the urge to pick up. She didn’t know if they would be at all valuable, but she wanted to take them. She grabbed the various items, including a piece of coral that gave some variety from the shells.
“That seems to be about it for the bookshelf. Though I am still curious as to what these scrolls are for.”
When she unfolded one, she was surprised to find it blank. There might have been some secret way to read it. She didn’t think she wanted to put in the effort to find out it was still blank, however. Instead, she redirected her attention back to Minnow. The Tailypo was doing her best to climb up the leg of the table, but she was struggling. Fanged laughed and went over to help her up. Minnow appeared happy once she was on the table.

Fanged wished she could take a picture of her, but she didn’t have a camera. The thought was a little disappointing, but her memory was sharp enough to hopefully have an impact. When it was evident that there was nothing further to be discovered on the table, Minnow looked at her expectantly to be placed back down. Fanged rolled her eyes but obliged. With that out of the way, they could now consider moving onto the next room.
“You ready to leave?” she questioned the Tailypo.
The baby considered for a moment before looking over towards the door opposite to the one they had entered through. Hopefully the door wasn’t locked. Fanged didn’t have any tools with her that she could use as a lockpick. Minnow followed her as she moved closer to the door. She held out a hand and tested the doorknob. To her relief, it opened with ease.

There was something a little unnerving about entering a new room, but Fanged tried her best to keep a brave face on. She stepped in first and then held the door open for Minnow to join her. The Tailypo was enjoying her new freedom even if she was a little unsteady on her paws. When she got tired, Fanged would be there to carry her.
“New room make sure to be wary at all times,” she told Minnow.
Minnow seemed to heed her words and carefully approached the center of the room. Fanged took the opportunity to scout the outside in case there was anything dangerous. She had a clear view of Minnow and could step in to protect her if it was necessary. The room had pools of salt water scattered around. She didn’t think they looked quite deep enough to be a risk for Minnow, but she’d need to keep an eye on her.

If the room remained danger free, it might be a nice place to get some training done. She still had some fish squirrelled away for exactly that purpose. She’d check the rest of the room and then the two of them could settle in for a bit of training. Fanged always felt more confident once she had a solid plan in place. Some might consider her to be an overthinker, but she liked to be thorough.
“Don’t get yourself in too much trouble,” she warned Minnow as the Tailypo noticed the pools of water.
The room itself seemed less like a room and more like a collection of tidepools. There were a few odd bits of furniture serving as a reminder that she was still in the mansion. But other than the odd chair, the room remained rather empty. The sight was a little odd, but she was slowly growing used to the mansion strangeness.

Fanged decided to join Minnow at the center of the room when the perimeter proved to be safe. The tidepool that she was standing at was luckily the shallowest of the bunch. Inside was a few starfish that wiggled in the water. Minnow was enraptured by them, her ears twitching as she observed.
“I don’t know much about starfish, but I think they have an eye on every arm,” she remarked.
Minnow remained still, her eyes following the closest starfish as it crawled across the tidepool. Fanged wondered if it needed deeper water, but it appeared to be moving just fine on its own. They watched the starfish until Minnow started to grow bored.
“Why don’t we check out what’s in the other pools?” she suggested.
Minnow pricked her ears forward once again and followed Fanged as she headed to the next pool. This one was much deeper than the last had been.
