In the grass was a faint, jagged outline of white. On closer inspection, Fanged realized that it was meant to depict a chalk outline of a body. She tilted her head as she observed the crude attempt. The body depicted didn’t look human, but that could simply be because it was drawn with shaky lines.
“Alright Pachinko, it looks like we have a mystery on our hands!” she exclaimed. She looked at the scene with renewed interest.
Now she could see why the scene had looked off to her. Chairs had been overturned and there were a variety of weapons one could choose from. It seemed almost as though it were meant to be a game. If Fanged recalled correctly, there was a board game based on this very concept. She tilted her head as she observed. It was clear that she was meant to figure out what had happened here.

Pachinko hopped out into the open, suddenly intrigued by whatever had Fanged staring so intently. The woman approached the picnic table, figuring that would be the first place she would start. She wished she had some gloves so she wouldn’t contaminate the crime scene, but it wasn’t as if she had access to a lab or anything like that anyways. Unless she couldn’t see such an amenity yet. She would do her best not to touch anything that she could ruin in that case.
“Alright Pachinko, first we will observe around the scene of the crime,” she commented.
From her perspective, she could see that there was red food colouring spread across the table to mimic the presence of blood. She knew it wasn’t real since the colouring was much too bright. That made her feel a bit better about disturbing the scene. If it wasn’t real, there wasn’t much she could contaminate.

Pachinko observed her with interest now. He hopped onto the table, effectively ruining all hope that Fanged had of preserving the integrity of the investigation. Ultimately, it didn’t matter since it was just a game after all, and she’d much rather Pachinko get some hands-on experience with the type of work she was known for. She moved around the room with purpose. She judged the distance between the chalk outline and the other objects within the room. An overturned chair caught her attention. She moved closer to it, squinting as she tried to spot anything off about it. It didn’t take her too long to find something.
“Look a piece of the chair has been broken off. And it’s covered in the red dye. Potentially it was used to harm the victim,” she told Pachinko. With enough force, even the most benign objects like a plastic chair leg could be used as a weapon.

She peered closer at the chair leg, trying to track the pattern of the simulated blood splatter. It was soon obvious that this piece of plastic had injured someone, but it didn’t match up with the scene before her. Was she missing the presence of another chalk outline? Pachinko began to hop around the room. He seemed to understand that she was looking for something and he wanted to help her find it! Fanged smiled at the Izer. The more time she spent with him, the better they could read each other. She began to search carefully, seeing if she had missed something obvious. When no chalk outline showed up, she supposed that the chair had simply been a red herring. Either that or another outline would show up in another room. She stowed that information away for now, instead turning back to the table to see if she would find the correct weapon there.

To her surprise, a small gathering of fireflies had made their way over to the table. She was quick to catch them and stash them in her backpack alongside an interesting fern that she found. Pachinko hopped up onto the table to try and catch the bugs as well, but Fanged had them put away before he could manage to injure any of them. Pachinko looked a little disappointed, but he moved on quickly.
“Time to solve this mystery!” Fanged declared. She might have had confidence, but she didn’t have the whole picture just yet.
She walked over to the table and squinted, as though that would reveal the answers of the universe to her. It took her a bit, but she finally felt as though she had a solid grasp for what had happened. When she had her final thoughts ready, she turned to give a performance to Pachinko.

“From what I can tell, there were two attacks here,” she remarked. “I think we might be looking at a case of self-defense here. See if you take into consideration the piece of broken plastic, it appears that our supposed victim made the first strike.”
Pachinko listened intently like any good audience should. Fanged found herself appreciating him for his attention. She made gestures with her hands as she spoke, really hamming up her monologue. “We can see that our unfortunate friend lying on the ground was the instigator. We know this because of the placement of his injuries. Though it’s not very clear on the chalk outline, his hands have damage to them.” She paused to catch her breath. To her delight, Pachinko was still paying attention. “Then instead of killing their intended victim, the other person managed to get ahold of a stronger weapon and ended their attacker’s life.”

With the mystery sufficiently solved, Fanged didn’t feel any reason to stick around in this room. She had found an interesting fern and that would be enough for her for now. Pachinko retook the perch on her shoulder as she made her way over to the door. She walked with her head held high, satisfied that she had solved the mystery. The way forward seemed much clearer now and she opened the door swiftly. A thrum of satisfaction coursed through her body as it opened with ease. She must have gotten the mystery right in order for the room to allow her to leave.
“Alright Pachinko, keep yourself close to me until we know it’s safe.”
Pachinko seemed to agree with her command as they stepped through into the new room. Fanged blinked blindly for a few moments as sunlight filled her vision. They were still inside as indicated by the walls surrounding them, however.

Fanged found herself in a larger space than she had anticipated. There was enough room for Pachinko to fly around freely. Grass grew on the floor instead of carpet and vines of ivy cascaded down the pastel painted walls. There were four doors present, one on each wall of the room. They were made of iron and covered in intricate, ancient designs. Fanged wasn’t particularly versed in history and wouldn’t be able to identify such designs off the top of her head. Pachinko took to the air, curiosity drawing him away from his perch. Fanged watched him briefly as he took off, ensuring that he didn’t get into too much mischief. When she was satisfied that he would be fine, she turned to explore the room. Wooden furniture lined each wall. A rather garish looking couch was pressed against the far wall. It had bright red couch cushions and was much too tall to be practical.

Fanged decided that the room looked safe enough for them to take a break from exploring and do some training. She shrugged her backpack down from her shoulders and pulled out a rope toy that she would use to train Pachinko his next fighting move. Pachinko was immediately alert once he saw that Fanged was holding a new object. He landed on the grass in front of her, watching her with an intent gaze. The woman wiggled the toy back and forth, enticing the Izer to approach. Pachinko took the bait. He hopped forward and snapped at the toy. He nipped at the toy with surprisingly sharp teeth. “Good boy!” Fanged praised him. She had a container of fruit treats ready for him and she handed him one quickly. Pachinko dropped the toy for now and accepted the treat happily. Now that he had performed nip once, she would get him to do it again. (Pachinko 26 1/5, 44 1/5) (Training: Nip 1) 11

She backed up and wiggled the toy back and forth again. Pachinko took a step forward and then hopped to catch up with the toy. He leaned closer with a playful glint in his eye and nipped at the rope toy. When he successfully grabbed the toy, Fanged quickly praised him. Pachinko lapped up the attention and gladly accepted the fruit treat that she handed him. Pachinko ate greedily and a small tongue darted out to lick his lips once he had finished. He eyed the toy with intrigue and waited for the woman to make it interesting once again. Realizing her cue, Fanged reached her hand forward and once again began to move the toy back and forth. Pachinko immediately perked up once she made the toy interesting again. He followed the toys movements, tilting his head as he prepared to strike forward. When Fanged made a sudden jerk with the toy, the Izer leaned in and nipped at it.

When Pachinko performed the correct action, Fanged praised him and handed him another treat. With training, it was important to reward proper behavior immediately so that the pet understood the action that was being rewarded. Pachinko ate quickly, which meant she didn’t have to wait long to get him to repeat the trick. She took a step back from him, moving the toy along the ground as she continued taking steps. The Izer tracked the movement of the toy, following it closely when Fanged moved it a bit further away than he was comfortable with. When he finally lunged for it, she gave him the new command word.
“Nip!” she told him.
When Pachinko had successfully clamped down on the toy with his nip attack, Fanged tossed him another treat. The Izer made a noise of delight and eagerly ate the treat. He ate efficiently and left not even a crumb behind.

Fanged placed the toy in front of Pachinko. This time she didn’t do anything to entice him towards it. Instead, she tried to give him the command and waited to see if he’d follow it.
“Pachinko, nip!” she told him. She made sure to point at the toy so that he could direct his attack properly.
Pachinko seemed to pick up on what she wanted him to do even without her moving the toy. He leaned closer and with a precise strike, nipped at the toy.
“Good boy!” Fanged praised him as she handed him another treat.
Pachinko ate the treat happily. Now that he had gotten the basic grasp of the trick, Fanged could move onto different targets. She took a quick glance around the room, noticing a flower-patterned pillow that would make a good target. She grabbed it quickly and set it up in front of Pachinko.

With the target in place, Fanged was quick to command Pachinko into attacking.
“Pachinko, nip!” she told him.
Pachinko sprang into action. He hopped closer to the pillow that Fanged pointed at and nipped at the soft fabric. The pillow tore with the Izer’s incessant attack. For his efforts, Pachinko was quickly handed another treat. With the Izer sufficiently praised and rewarded, she began to look for the next object that she could use as a target. She found one quickly in the form of a picnic blanket. She grabbed the blanket and dragged it over. Pachinko had experience attacking blankets, so he should do just fine with the task at hand. After she set down the blanket, she gave Pachinko the command to attack.
“Nip!” she said in a firm voice.
Pachinko darted forward and nipped at the blanket with vigor. Fanged allowed him to attack the blanket for a few moments before she gave him a treat.
